The poodle was also drawn into service as a military dog, guide dog, guard dog, wagon puller for performers and, eventually, as a circus performer. Its coat was shorn close to facilitate swimming, but left slightly longer on the chest for warmth in cold water. Although some believe the puffs of hair around the leg joints and tail tip were for protection when hunting, compelling evidence suggests that they arose as decoration during the poodle's performing days. The poodle found favor as an elegant companion for fashionable ladies. It became favored by French aristocracy and eventually became the national dog of France. Its characteristic clip was accentuated, and a successful effort was made to perfect the smaller specimens. Poodles entered the show ring in the late s. Some of the early show poodles were shown in corded coats, in which the hair is allowed to mat in long thin tresses rather than be brushed out. While eye-catching, the upkeep was difficult and the trend died out by the early s, being replaced by the bouffant styles still in vogue. At the same time poodle popularity in America waned, so that by the late s, poodles had almost died out in North America. In the s, the breed staged a comeback that eventually placed it as the all-time most popular dog in America. Unless you are going to be buying different crate sizes as the puppy grows, it is best to buy a crate with a divider. My recommendation is that you look at www. They come with a divider. Your puppy has already been introduced to the crate. So Crate Training should begin immediately upon your arrival home. There are numerous training aids which provide guidance in this area. However, since it is important to begin a training routine immediately, the following basic tips will give you a start: Never push or shove your puppy into the crate Never use the crate as a means of punishment Coax your puppy in with toys or a treat Reward your puppy with lots of praise and another treat Also note: Do not leave your new puppy alone in the crate for more than 2 or 3 hours during the day. Your puppy will need to relieve itself often. Because they do not naturally like to soil their sleeping area this works in your favor for potty training. They will whine or bark so you can quickly take them outside. In this way the puppy learns to tell you when it needs to go outside and you should show your approval. This may be a little challenging at first when the puppy seems to whine to want out of the crate. You have to set the pace as to what whine or bark you will accept. Do not give in to every whine or bark. If possible place the crate in your bedroom at night until your puppy feels secure. This also allows for you to hear its whine when it needs to go outside to potty. Use old towels or blankets for bedding to begin with. For the first few nights placing something of yours with your scent on it will help your puppy feel more comfortable and secure. Soon your puppy will be sleeping through the night. You establish the times for going to sleep and waking up. Be consistent. Thereafter do not place anything in the crate until his potty training is well under way. The idea here is that if your puppy has an accident he will be wet and uncomfortable until you come to rescue him. When your puppy is dry and clean for two weeks straight then you can try giving him a towel and see how he does. When possible leave the door open during the daytime in a restricted area so that the puppy can go in and out at will. The crate is not only used to help you house-break your puppy but also to help you establish yourself as leader and set clear limits for your young puppy. A puppy that is not crated gets into lots of expensive trouble before he is full grown. Dogs do not suddenly outgrow destructive chewing and getting into things, so it is best that they never learn that they can chew or destroy furniture or other valuables. More helpful hints: The rule for puppies between seven to fourteen weeks old is that they are in their crate more than they are out. When they are out they are confined to a puppy-proof area and under close supervision. If no one is available to watch, the puppy does not receive freedom. Remember, your puppy is a baby and also needs a lot of sleep and down time. When he is out of his crate he is usually in overdrive, playing hard. After about fourteen weeks you can start to be a little less vigilant and see how it goes. If your puppy is getting into trouble back up and limit his time out to supervision time only. Gradually work toward having your puppy out for longer and longer periods of time without him getting into trouble. Also, do not give him the run of the house. Start in a small area and as he earns your trust widen the area he is allowed to be in. As he gets close to a year old you can gradually leave your puppy out longer while you are home with less supervision. However, make sure you check on him frequently to be sure that he is not getting into trouble. Crate him when you leave the house, at least for the first eighteen to twenty-four months of his life. Remember, he is not considered full grown until he is two years old. When your Poodle has proven that he is trustworthy while you are home, you can then allow him out of his crate while you are out. Start with short periods of time. Eventually, when he can handle small amounts of time, you can extend his free times to longer and longer periods, until he can be home alone several hours of the day. To prevent future behavior problems by giving privileges too soon, your puppy should sleep in a crate from day one. The crate can be in your room, but your puppy should not be allowed to sleep with you. Using a crate is an excellent way to ensure that your puppy will not destroy something valuable. Be sure also to have lots of hard chew toys available for him to chew on. Dogs that are given too much freedom too soon are bound to get into trouble and learn to be destructive. Many behaviorists and dog trainers agree that separation anxiety can be triggered by failing to set boundaries and limit freedom when a dog is young. A young dog that does not get too much freedom too soon can learn to be alone without becoming destructive. Young puppies do certain things when they are getting ready to relieve themselves. Typically, they begin to sniff the ground while moving constantly, sometimes in a circle, looking for a good spot. Until your puppy is well trained, go outside with him. The right spot should be a spot that you always take him to until he can go out by himself. The Schedule The most effective house-training is a combination of crate training and schedule feeding and potty training. And remember consistency is the key to success. Although it is thought that Salukis probably first made an appearance in the United Kingdom in medieval times, accompanying returning crusaders, the breed did not gain a firm foothold until the early twentieth century, and the small gene pool from which most Western Salukis originate has given it a relatively standard appearance. This is not the case in many Arab nations, where regional differences in the terrain and prey species mean that Salukis can vary in their size and shape. Appearance This is an extremely slender, elegant breed that is nonetheless strong and athletic. It is of noble bearing, and its posture generally conveys its aloof outlook on the world. The long, narrow head is very refined in its features, with a barely perceptible stop and evenly tapering lines. Its large eyes are oval-shaped and dark, and gentle and faithful in their expression. The long ears are set high on the skull, and are adorned with long silky hair, which falls flat to the side of the face. Its power in the chase comes from the rear, and it has a markedly arched, strong loin. The chest is rather narrow when viewed from the front, but it is also deep and long, giving the lungs plenty of room to expand. The belly is tightly tucked, emphasising the almost complete lack of fat on the dog. Its tail is long and thin, with silky fringes, and is carried in a graceful curve. The long limbs are perfect in their form and movement, with ample muscling and strong, sinewy lower extremities. They propel the dog with a fluid, effortless gait, and even at a gallop, the Saluki is cushioned by its thick pads and limber joints. Its coat is smooth and silky, and most individuals have marked feathering on the legs and at the rear of the thighs; however, there is also a smooth-coated variety, which lacks such adornments. Males are usually around 65—71 cm tall at the top of the withers, with females ranging between 58 and 65 cm. Their weight varies between 20 and 27 kg, with females tending towards the lower end of this range. Rather than doting on its humans, the breed prefers quiet companionship, and loves to lounge about in their presence, without needing physical contact or constant reassurance. Most will bond most strongly with one particular family member, and will discreetly shadow this person as they go about their business, and they are not dogs that enjoy meeting new people. Salukis are never aggressive, but are aloof and distant around strangers, and will shy away from attention coming from unfamiliar quarters. This trait needs to be handled from puppyhood through socialisation, lest the pup grow into a nervous adult. Their gentle nature means they are very unlikely to ever inflict a bite, but young children often play too rough for a breed with such thin skin and bony prominences, and so the Saluki cannot be considered a suitable pet for young families. It enjoys mannerly canine company, preferably in the form of other Salukis, but its strong hunting instinct is triggered by the sight of any smaller animal running, so it should not be homed with cats or any small pets. Trainability Training this independent-minded dog is difficult, as it is for many sight hounds. Salukis are easily bored, and are rarely interested in performing on command, even to satisfy their favourite person. Unfortunately, they are also largely uninterested in food rewards, meaning they can be difficult to motivate. Health Thousands of years in a desert environment has weeded out most genetic diseases in the breed, although there are several to which it remains predisposed: Anaesthesia Sensitivity Many of the drugs used in veterinary anaesthesia rely on their diffusion into fatty tissues to prevent overdose, and the Saluki, like the Greyhound , does not have such fatty reserves. For this reason, complications can arise from general anaesthesia, particularly if the attending veterinary surgeon is less familiar with the particular requirements of this unique family of dogs. Cutaneous Haemangioma This is a generally benign, but problematic, skin tumour that is common in the breed. It usually arises in the skin of the lower limbs, and although it rarely spreads beyond the primary site, it is invasive, can grow to a large size, and can bleed heavily if traumatised. Dilated Cardiomyopathy Seen in older dogs, this progressive weakening of the heart muscles causes the organ to dilate and lose function. This cardiac failure may manifest as fluid accumulations in the chest or abdomen, causing coughing or bloating, or as episodes of weakness or fainting. Can often be managed medically for quite some time, but at considerable expense. Haemolytic Anaemia An autoimmune disease, usually seen in young adult dogs, in which the white blood cells of the immune system inappropriately target the oxygen-carrying red blood cells for destruction. The resulting anaemia can be severe, and aggressive immunosuppressive treatment is needed for months to years to bring the condition under control. Exercise and Activity Levels While it is a true athlete and peerless in its speed and power, the Saluki is not a hyperactive or high-energy dog. It is happy to spend most of its day at rest, and appreciates having a comfortable bed on which to rest its bony joints. It should be given between 30 and 60 minutes of walking each day, but should also be provided with a secure outdoor space where it can gallop at full speed whenever it is so inclined. Grooming The silky coat sheds very little, and is relatively easy to care for. It should be brushed or combed twice a week, followed by a wipe with a clean, damp cloth to remove dust. With such care, it will rarely need washing. The Saluki may be prone to dental tartar build-up, especially if fed a wet diet, and daily tooth brushing is extremely beneficial. This should be started in puppyhood, for although periodontal disease and tooth loss occur later in life, an adult dog is less likely to accept a newly introduced brushing routine.
