You should also be able to see and feel their spine when they bend and curl themselves into a sleeping position. Another way to check your Frenchie is a healthy weight is to look at them from above. If they are not carrying extra pounds, they tend to look like an hourglass shape, with a visible waistline that is smaller than their chest — you can see what that looks like with our Frenchie Claude in the photo below. Sometimes a quick visual check from above is all you need to do. As I mentioned earlier, their appearance can vary a lot. They get tired and overexerted easily Frenchies will often become breathless after heavy activity, but when overweight this will be noticeable after just a tiny amount of activity. Overweight Frenchies will start panting or having to stop after a very short walk. One of the most visible indicators that your Frenchie needs to lose weight is if they are unable to climb up steps and stairs like they did before. They are unable to groom and scratch themselves Whilst Frenchies cannot clean certain areas of their body , they can still lick and scratch themselves. If you notice your dog is unable to scratch and groom himself like he used to, it could be because the flexibility has been replaced with weight gain fat. How can I get my French Bulldog to lose weight? If you are concerned that your fat French Bulldog puppy is overweight or that your adult Frenchie is no longer at a healthy weight anymore, then here are some tips on what to do. Feed them lighter dog food And by that, I mean dog food with less calories, higher in fiber, and more protein. By doing so your Frenchie will burn the calories off faster and will lose weight quicker as a result. Vets say that dogs should not eat anything more than 25 calories for every pound they weigh. The average male Frenchie weighs around 25 pounds, meaning your dog may only need calories a day. You should always read the guidelines written on commercial dog food packaging, and if in doubt please read my guide to how much Frenchies should eat to stay healthy. But please do this on advice of your vet. You might be surprised at how many extra calories your overweight French Bulldog takes on from picking up scraps in the kitchen or dropped from the table. I try to walk Claude twice a day if I can, each time taking up around 30 minutes. I think this is probably why my Frenchie is very trim and muscular, rather than being a fatty. Weigh your Frenchie regularly If you have got a fat French Bulldog who needs to go on a diet to lose weight, then you should have a target in mind. The weight target is something your vet can advise on. Once you have that target weight in mind, I recommend regular weighing sessions, probably every couple of days. This will help you to keep them on target. Weighing a fat Frenchie is actually quite easy. Weigh yourself on the scales first, then pick your dog up and weigh yourself again. The difference in weight is what your overweight Frenchie comes in at. Neutering which can lead to less energy. Bloating and water retention due to illness. Canine medication. The frequency of obesity has increased greatly in recent years, due primarily to overeating and lack of exercise, especially as a french bulldog ages. French Bulldogs are not much different than people in this respect. Because French Bulldogs have a relatively compact and small body type weight can be a concern for any owner who wants to keep their frenchie baby healthy. The overweight problems are also one reason no French Bulldog breeder can truly guarantee what the adult weight will be of a week old puppy. But how do you know if your Frenchie is getting overweight? A check-up with a good very knowledgable veterinarian is always a good idea, especially since he has your French Bulldogs records from his last exam and can compare weight, as well as other clinical indicators. You can, however, perform a similar examination at home. Start by running your hands down your French Bulldogs sides, over the rib cage. You should be able to feel the spine and the tops of the shoulders with only a small amount of fat over them. Too much fat is overweight, too little is undernourished. The abdomen or stomach should show a slight truck after the belly or taper up from the rib cage back to the hind legs. If your French Bulldog is overweight, he will have no tuck, if he is too thin, the tuck will be extreme, along with a pronounced rib cage. A good rule of thumb I follow is simply if your French Bulldog looks healthy and nourished, he probably is. There could be an underlying medical problem causing either extreme.

He's a 4yo male boxer who was hit by a car in Ohio and left for dead. The shelter picked him up, and he waited alone for five long days for his family to come get him. They never came. A complete stranger saw the shelter's story about Henry online and wanted to help. This good Samaritan, despite knowing they couldn't keep Henry long-term, picked him up from the shelter and took him home and began to arrange medical care, while at the same time starting a search for others who could help find Henry a forever home. That's where MNBR comes in. One of our members saw Henry's story and connected us, and we stepped in to help secure a foster and ongoing medical attention for this good boy. Henry's original prognosis was that his injuries were catastrophic. He would need to have one of his legs amputated, plus additional surgeries to address what appeared to be major spine damage as well as damage to two of his other legs and hips. The situation seemed dire. But as it turns out, our boy Henry is a fighter!!! Despite his situation, he was in good spirits and started to show improvements in his legs, so the team decided to move forward with finding a treatment path for him. An MRI and assessment revealed that Henry's injuries, while extensive, were operable, and the orthopedic surgeon believed that they could save all Henry's limbs! Since then, Henry has had several therapies, including new water therapy, and he is healing! Henry is a sweet boy who is the definition of a champ! Henry arrived in Minnesota finally in January, since then he has been being seen at the University of Minnesota Veterinary medical clinic. But we are not getting too excited his care is not over quite yet. And he will also need follow up appointments from the surgery he just endured, bandage changes, etc. Donations are tax deductible.
