The decline of the Parti Poodle in the early 20th century In the early 20th, there were other dog breeds slowly taking the spotlight. Breeds such as German Shepherd, and Labrador Retriever have gained popularity causing the decline of the Parti Poodle. Both German Shepherds and Labradors are excellent hunting dogs which were much preferred. The decline in popularity was worsened by the onset of wars where breeding Parti Poodles became uncommon. The resurgence of the Parti Poodle in modern times Despite being on the brink of distinction, Parti Poodles managed to gain back its popularity again. Several factors helped its resurgence. Canine groups recognizing the Parti Poodles Allowing this dog breed to join shows and competition Increase in awareness and appreciation from dog lovers How Are Parti Poodles Bred Selective Breeding is a way in which Parti Poodles are bred. Credible breeders will choose which parents to use following the desired coat pattern. Ethical guidelines are what we practice at Stokeshire. Dogs also undergo genetic testing to avoid any medical issues being passed on to their litters. But how the litter will look is undetermined as their coat colors and markings will be different from one another. At present, particolored ones are still restricted from joining conformation shows or events organized by AKC. Although, they can still be registered in obedience and agility shows. UKC is considered the second-largest kennel organization in the United States. How Long Do Parti Poodles Live Life expectancy is years Some Parti Poodles may live shorter or longer depending on their genetic makeup, diet, exercise, and overall well-being. Some may be susceptible to health risks such as: Hip dysplasia. I do not believe in amputating tails and toes, so my puppies come with their tails and dewclaws, just as nature intended. All puppies will be raised lovingly indoors and be properly socialized, potty trained, crate trained, doggy door trained and temperament tested. I try hard to pay attention to advancing their development and raise the puppies using puppy culture protocols. The puppies are fed raw meat and goats milk along with high quality kibble when they are started on solid food and they will be fed only the best diet. I start dremmeling puppies toenails around two weeks of age and start bathing and grooming face, feet, tail and sanitary at 4 weeks old and every week until they go home so they get used to the baths, clippers and blow dryer. Each puppy will come with AKC registration, a puppy packet, litter blanket, comb, brush, ball, dog food sample bag and their favorite toy all in a toy basket. They will be current on worming and vaccinations. I let puppies start going "HOME" at 10 weeks of age when they will be ready to bond with their new family. This means a quiet and mellow puppy will not go to a home with young children and a very active and outgoing puppy will not go to a home with an inactive family. Poodles need physical AND mental stimulation all the time. Prospective owners need to know that. All new puppy owners will have a contract which they must adhere to and it will be signed and the hard copy will be returned to me in the mail or in person before any puppies leave my home. Check for OFA hips and Cerf eyes at the least or you will end up with a lot of vet bills and heartache. Each puppy is given individual attention from the time they are born. They are introduced to the clippers and blow dryer, nails being done etc. They are lead trained and WELL on their way to being house broken. Each puppy has been to the vet and given a extensive health exam and have been given their first set of vaccines. Each puppy is temperament tested and put in several different situations to see their response. The Sire and dams to our litters have been Health checked. The health testing goes beyond just a visit to the vet for the sire and dam. We also do VGL testing. Here is a description written by Natalie Green Tessier on the subject. We purebred dog breeders work with limited gene pools. Some are large, some are small. Some have lots of breeding dogs, some have few. Some have lines that are quite different, some have mostly one large family. However, pedigrees do not account for differences between two siblings, when in fact they can have a range of similarity. Have you ever noticed how one grandchild looks like one grandparent and another looks like a different grandparent? If we consider that this can happen at every generation, we can see that two lines from the same ancestors can be very much the same depending on which puppies were chosen along the way or quite different. Some people think what this test does is only estimate inbreeding. Inbreeding is only one aspect of breeding. Experienced breeders know that the most important variable in inbreeding is which ancestors are being inbred on — and breeds with major genetic bottlenecks can easily make those bottlenecks more severe without knowing it. You may think you are outcrossing when you are not. You can even pick a nice line breeding that gives you the qualities you want to double up on but is not actually as close a breeding as you think. But only with DNA data. So while this method can be used to lower inbreeding, it really is more of a breed management tool. It does not include testing for mutations — in fact the markers it uses are specifically chosen for not being associated with specific traits because those markers give us a better picture of existing diversity in the breed and genetic relationships between two dogs, or each dog and the rest of the breed. In order to understand the power of the method, the benefits of this method, you have to look at DNA testing a whole new way. Parti Standard Poodles - If you love spots, you may want a parti poodle. A parti poodle is a poodle of white and another color. There are several distinct patterns: the tuxedo, spotted, and abstract all refer to a poodle that is white and another color. That color can be black, brown, red, apricot, creme, silver, blue, grey, cafe-au-lait, or silver-beige. Parti poodles are usually more than half white with colored spots. They can range from almost a solid white with just a few spots of color to the more colorful tuxedos. Tuxedos look like a poodle dressed for a party. They have white on the legs and a white collar that may or may not go completely around the neck. Tuxedo-colored poodles also have white on the belly that should extend up to the chest. Some tuxedos have colored legs almost to the feet and others have white all the way up to their back. Abstract poodles have limited white markings and are almost a solid colored dog. The most common abstract poodle marking is a simple white mark on the chest. White splashes of color may also occur on the face, head, chest, and feet. Abstract poodles sometimes have a white chest and white feet that look like they have been dipped in paint. Ticking marks are the small spots found within the white parts of the dog. Dogs may have little to no ticking. Ticking on legs may look like small spots or be large enough to look like stripes. And while German Shepherds do look intimidating, owners may wonder if they were chosen for the job due to high dog intelligence. German Shepherds are some of the smartest dogs in the world. But even so, their intelligent instincts and their ability to adaptively learn is what actually makes the German Shepherd smarter than nearly all dogs. But how did we come to this conclusion? However, this type of test favors breeds that enjoy working, such as the German Shepherd, more than others breeds that were bred for something else. Based on a criteria he developed, the obedience trial judges evaluated as many dog breeds as they could. That said, his criteria for dog intelligence is as follows: The number of repetitions needed for a dog breed to learn a new command. Dog breeds that needed fewer repetitions ranked higher on the list. The success rate that a dog breed will obey a known command on the first try. Despite the enormous response, not all dog breeds made the final cut. Rarer dog breeds did not have a big enough sample size to qualify. In other words, there were no hybrid breeds that participated despite their popularity. Not even the smart Goldendoodle had a shot. However thanks to the overwhelming popularity of the German Shepherd in America, they easily met both requirement. Plus, GSDs are recognized as a distinct breed with every kennel club in the world. So, they participated. In fact, only two other dog breeds managed to top them in obedience and working intelligence — the Border Collie and Poodle. But as a top smartest dog, what does this mean? German Shepherds were placed in the top dog intelligence class, among the top 10 dogs. Breeds in this class are able to learn a new command with fewer than 5 repetitions. German Shepherds are able to learn basic commands in a few minutes! In addition, German Shepherds exhibited characteristics of high obedience. Not many animals can do the same! Coincidentally, some of the most popular dog breeds in the world! German Shepherds vs. Dumbest Dogs On the other side of the spectrum are the least intelligent dog breeds, at least according to Coren. Not only are they much slower at learning, but also a lot less obedient. All of which, can be quite intelligent outside of obedience and working intelligence. Dogs in the least intelligent class need between 80 and repetitions to learn a new command. This meant that German Shepherds are at least 16 times faster at learning new commands than these dogs in the lowest class! In other words, German Shepherds are about 3 to 4 times more obedient than these other dogs. That said, there are actually three components of dog intelligence, according to Stanley Coren. The other two, which may actually be more important, are instinctive and adaptive intelligence. Both of which, the German Shepherd excels in as well. German Shepherds have sharp instincts for guarding Instinctive intelligence refers to the natural ability or innate skill that the dog was originally bred for. In the past, all dogs were bred for a specific role or purpose. In addition, only a few toy dogs were actually bred for solely companionship. For example, Welsh Corgis were bred to herd cattle, sheep and other farm livestock. But without little to no human training or intervention, Corgis are able to instinctively round up and drive livestock in their desired direction. That is their instinctive intelligence. Likewise, German Shepherds were bred to be the ultimate utility dogs. In other words, they could do it all as a multi-purpose working dog. German Shepherds did, and excelled, at almost everything. They were used as herding dogs, sheep guards, police dogs, therapy dogs and much more. Once Sheba was satisfied that no one was lurking around, we settled down for the night. No one taught him that. But how is this high intelligence? A popular trait of the best guard dogs is the ability to differentiate a friend from a threat. German Shepherds are great at reading intentions based on human expressions or actions. This requires this special type of intelligence. The German Shepherd is great at learning from past experiences The final dimension of dog intelligence is adaptive intelligence. This refers to the ability of the dog to learn for itself. Problem solving and the ability to learn from past experiences are both associated with high adaptive intelligence in dogs. Though, we do have real owner stories that suggest high adaptive intelligence in German Shepherds. Smart boy, indeed. As we already know, learning verbal commands is easy for the German Shepherd. As such, learning word correlations is not a problem for this dog. But how about learning actions through other stimuli? Scooter the German Shepherd learned a specific scent and the subsequent action. These are just two examples, but if you asked any German Shepherd owner, they would probably tell you equally remarkable stories of adaptive IQ in these dogs. Is Your German Shepherd Smart?
