It will exercise their minds and bodies. However, keep any training short since most animals have a short attention span. Five 5 to ten 10 minutes of training is crucial for a successful session. Crate Training Crate training. Crates are always a good way to train your dog. It will also prevent destructive behavior if the dog is ever left unsupervised. Good behavior is rewarded with treats, attention, and praise. Therefore, bad behavior should not be rewarded with a treat, attention, or praise. Even a squirt of water from a water bottle will assist in correcting bad behavior. Pulling on a leash- STOP walking and ignore your dog. This will take great patience but this method is proven to be successful. Once your dog relaxes or quits pulling you may proceed to walk. You may stop more than walking but in time, your dog will walk perfectly by your side. Keep in mind by allowing your dog to walk in front of you rather than beside you is giving them the message they the alpha dog and in control. Remember, you are the alpha! Guarding or aggression- always consult with a professional when dealing with aggression, possessive, or guarding issues. This type of behavior can easily escalate into an uncomfortable or dangerous situation. Most of these issues involve a mental behavior issue, and many can be corrected once you find the source of the behavior. Remove All Distractions Most dogs appear stubborn if they ignore a command because there is a distraction in the environment. Removing the distraction, this will cause your dog to focus on you rather than that interesting squirrel playing in the yard. However, some will argue that scruffing is perfectly safe and produces desired results. It is wise to use this method only if you properly understand the technique and the disposition of your dog. You can purchase a clicker, however, a click of your tongue, a whistle, or a clap of your hands will have the same effect. However, anyone can clap or whistle so a clicker is preferable. At the end of the day, your dog is an animal, and instinct is a major facet of how animals act. Behaviors to Avoid When Disciplining Your Bulldog There are many different schools of thought regarding how you should discipline your Bulldog. Regardless of what you decide to do, the following guidelines will help you establish the right tone of relationship with your Bulldog, making it easier to help them behave properly. Encouraging Aggressive Play or Behavior There are a lot of ways that we inadvertently encourage aggressive behaviors in our Bulldogs without meaning to. One of those ways is through aggressive play, or we might accidentally reward aggressive behaviors. Wrestling your Bulldog, for example, can be fun, but it can also encourage aggressive behaviors. Similarly, rewarding your Bully with a treat after a rough play session can encourage them to continue acting in such a fashion. In this spectacle, groups of dogs would be pitted against a chained bull in a battle that often led to the death of either the bull or the dogs. The Bulldogs used for this sport were trained and bred to be far more aggressive than the amiable companion dogs we have today. Thankfully, there are plenty of other ways you can play with your Bully and still have a great time. Physical Punishments Much worse than aggressive play is using physical punishments to discipline your Bulldog. Furthermore, when you resort to physical punishment, you lose the opportunity to teach your Bulldog something new using the methods outlined above. Truthfully, your Bully wants to please you! Maintaining eye contact with your dog can actually be a sign of affection. Many breeds show affection in such a manner, including other bully breeds like Rottweilers or Pitbulls. Even with your dog, if your eye contact becomes too aggressive or you hold it too long, it could start to make your dog uncomfortable, and they might start to interpret it differently. Once eye contact starts to feel threatening to your dog, they might become defensive. This will only make it harder to get them to behave the way you want. You want your dog to behave properly and obey you out of love and respect, not out of fear or intimidation. As a puppy, they will eat three times a day, so you will need to find times in those first few months to feed them more often. When they are an adult or senior, the scheduling of feeding times will be easier because they will only eat twice daily. For a Golden Retriever puppy, the best feeding schedule is once in the morning, noontime, and in the evening. For example, you could feed their first meal at am, lunch at noon, then dinner at pm. Puppies have different nutritional needs according to their breed and eventual adult size. Ask your vet for help checking the expected adult weight of your puppy according to their breeding. You can then choose the right food for them and make sure you give it to them in the right quantities. What are the size categories for dogs? Dogs are categorised in five different sizes: X-small — up to 4kg when adult Small — up to 10kg when adult Medium — 11kg to 25kg when adult Large — 26kg to 44kg when adult Giant — over 45kg when adult Why is puppy food tailored to adult dog sizes? Breeds of different sizes have different needs as puppies. Medium breeds tend to be more active outdoors so need plenty of energy and helping building their natural defences. This is particularly crucial for large breed dogs, as overfeeding can cause them to grow too quickly and develop skeletal problems. Mixed feeding is when you give your puppy a combination of wet and dry food — either at the same time or at separate meals. You can try adding the wet as a topper to the kibble or feed in a separate bowl. They both offer important benefits such as wet food helping with hydration and appealing to picky eaters. Puppies can start mixed feeding at any time, but introducing them to variety at an early age may avoid fussy behaviour in adulthood. A dog's digestive tract becomes accustomed to the composition and type of food. The amount your puppy needs to drink depends on factors including the environmental temperature and their size, exercise levels, physical condition and diet. The best way to ensure your puppy drinks the right amount is to give them constant access to fresh water. Change the water in their bowls daily to keep it clean and top it up throughout the day. Also wash their bowls daily to prevent parasites breeding in them. Then they always have the opportunity to drink in a quiet place. And avoid plastic water bowls as they can harbour off-putting smells and bacteria — ceramic or stainless steel bowls are best. What How Maintain portion control To avoid overfeeding your puppy, check the dietary guidelines on the food packaging and measure each portion carefully. Remember the stated amounts apply for the whole day, not per meal. Giving your puppy scraps or hand feeding can also cause bad behaviour. Limit how many you give and always offer them at the right time for the right reason. Limit activity before and after feeding To prevent stomach upsets, try to avoid your puppy jumping about for an hour or two after eating. Keep feeding times calm Distractions can put your puppy off their food, so keep their feeding area quiet. Set the pace If your puppy bolts their food, try a slow-feed bowl or feeding puzzle. Make sure you choose the right puppy food according to their expected adult size and always follow the portion recommendations on the pack. When should I stop feeding puppy food? For smaller breeds this can be as early as eight months, but for larger breeds it can be up to two years. When can puppies eat dry food? Puppies can start to eat dry kibbles when weaning, which begins at around four or five weeks. What foods are poisonous for a puppy? Many of the foods that are healthy or enjoyable for us can be poisonous for dogs and puppies. Is homemade food better for puppies?
