At 8, feet above sea level, crossing this part of Europe was extremely dangerous, with drifts of snow as high as 40 feet. During the late s, the monks bred powerful working dogs that were able to locate and rescue those trapped underneath the snow. Supposedly, these dogs never received formal training from the monks, with the younger dogs naturally learning how to perform these heroic rescues from the older dogs instead. The breed has adapted over the years, with other dogs like the Newfoundland being mixed into it. It has become larger than before with looks and personality being emphasized over its rescuing ability. However the St Bernard is still used for this purpose today, alongside being a popular family pet. Poodle Breed History: While commonly associated with the French, the Poodle actually originated as a duck hunter in Germany over years ago. Eventually, Poodles made their way from the lake to the life of luxury as they were the breed of choice by French nobles, and eventually royalty across all of Europe. To this day, the Poodle is still the national dog of France. The Toy Poodle started in the United States in the early 20th century to be a city-dwelling companion dog. On top of that, the gender of the puppy and the genetics of the parents play important factors as well. Saint Berdoodles are rarely, if ever, bred from Toy Poodles. A Miniature Saint Berdoodle will weigh in at around pounds and stand roughly inches tall. The Standard Saint Berdoodle, will weigh approximately pounds and stand about inches tall. Their fur can range anywhere from wavy, like the Saint Bernard to curly like the Poodle and usually is of medium length. A minimum of brushing once per week is required for Saint Berdoodles, with the ideal frequency being every other day if not every day for more curly-haired dogs. Are Saint Berdoodles Hypoallergenic? Do Saint Berdoodles Shed? While this can be true, due to the unpredictability of genetics, there is no guarantee that any particular dog, or litter of dogs will be hypoallergenic. For more details, check out our article on doodle generations as the examples apply directly to Saint Berdoodle dogs. However, due to the genetic diversity from crossing these two breeds, the result may be a lower chance of developing these inherited health concerns. Due to the cost of treating these common health concerns, we highly encourage all dog owners invest in pet insurance. We recommend getting a free online quote from Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. This is adorable but can go overboard if they become too clingy or develop separation anxiety. They are excellent with all kinds of pets as well as children as they are quite calm and gentle. Due to their large size, however, do make sure you keep an eye on them to prevent accidents with small children or elderly family members. While not typically aggressive, a Saint Berdoodle dog takes protecting their family seriously and make good guard dogs. Saint Berdoodles are fairly easy to train as they strive to please and catch on quickly. They are quite sensitive though, so make sure to use positive reinforcement and not an overly harsh or loud tone of voice. Depending how much they take after their Saint Bernard heritage, they can be content with just a short brisk walk each day. In fact, they actually can make good apartment dogs believe it or not! Saint Berdoodle Highlights Saint Berdoodles are mixed breed dogs. They are not purebreds like their Saint Bernard or Poodle parents. Two common color combinations of Saint Berdoodles are white-and-brown and white-and-black. They can also be red with white accents or white with red accents. The coats of Saint Berdoodles can take after either parent—wiry and curly for the Poodle, or longer and smooth or rough for the Saint Bernard. Saint Berdoodles are generally pretty well-equipped for cold weather, especially if their coats are similar to Saint Bernards. Saint Berdoodles are great with people of all ages, including kids. The only concern with these dogs is their size with very young children. Be sure to supervise interactions with very young children in case of accidental stepping or sitting. These dogs do not enjoy being alone, so they would love the company of other pets and family members. Saint Berdoodle History Historical records show Poodles being bred in the s and Saint Bernards being bred in the s, both in Europe. Saint Berdoodle breeding is a little more vague, but it looks like they were bred intentionally in the US beginning in the s. The rationale to combine the protectiveness and rescue nature of the Saint Bernard with the intelligence and trainability of the Poodle for a family dog was strong. Between and alone, Saint Bernards rescued over 2, people. Consider adoption if you decide this is the breed for you. Check your local shelters, look up Saint Berdoodle rescues, or check with breed-specific Saint Bernard or Poodle rescues, as they sometimes take in mixed breed dogs and find homes for them. Saint Berdoodle Size Though there is quite a range of sizes for Saint Berdoodles, you can expect a larger dog, in general. Saint Bernards are always large, and Standard Poodles are medium-to-large. In terms of height, the range is typically between 15 and 30 inches. There have been attempts at creating a Miniature Saint Berdoodle, with a weight between 20 and 50 pounds, and a height between 14 and 18 inches, but miniaturizing a Saint Bernard usually involves breeding with a smaller dog, too—most commonly the Cocker Spaniel. You can expect your Saint Berdoodle to be friendly and affectionate, always wanting to be part of family activities. The only reason you may need to supervise interactions with Saint Berdoodles and very small children is just that these dogs are often quite large, so accidents may happen with sitting or stepping. Saint Berdoodle Health Saint Berdoodles are fairly healthy dogs. While mixing breeds can be a way to minimize genetic disorders, the resulting crossbreed can still inherit health problems from the parent breeds. Regular care and annual veterinary check-ups are a good way to keep your dog in prime health. Some of the more common health problems for Saint Berdoodles include: hip dysplasia. These giant dogs have a charming and cheerful personality. They are affectionate, loving, and highly intelligent. They can be non-shedding and even approach hypoallergenic. This breed really combines some of the most excellent features of the noble and cheeky Saint Bernard and the low-shedding and wickedly smart Poodle. Like all Poodle mix cross-breeds , the St Berdoodle is not considered to be a purebred. Saint Berdoodles are highly trainable and can be used as service dogs. Learn about the very different but still giant Bernedoodle here. How amazingly handsome is Toast the Saint Berdoodle!? His parents were a Saint Bernard and a Standard Poodle. Photo: Toast the Berdoodle on Instagram. Photo used permission. Picture a gentle Giant teddy bear with dark eyes and an enormous head. The coat can hide a surprisingly slender Poodle like muzzle! The musculature tends to be well built and sturdy. They come in black and multi-colored options. Mostly the coats are white with either tan, brown, or black. The variation comes from both the Poodle and Saint Bernard side. Multi-colored just means there is brown or tan incorporated into the coat. How big do Saint Berdoodles get? Do not underestimate the possible giant size of a Saint Berdoodle. They regularly grow in weight to pounds kilograms. St Berdoodles also frequently stand up to 30 inches 75 centimeters at the shoulder. As a result, expect a high intake of food. Expect cups of kibble per day, depending on the final weight of the St Berdoodle. Even as a puppy, they can consume a relatively extraordinary volume of food! The St berdoodle is a beautiful and large Poodle Mix cross breed. Photo: Adelaide Addy the cheeky an beautiful St Berdoodle. Used with permission. Are there Mini St Berdoodles? At the end of the day, a Saint Bernard is a giant dog. Purebred Saint Bernards are just… large. It is, therefore, difficult to get a genuinely miniature Saint Berdoodle. Two approaches may result in a smaller sized St Bernard Poodle Mix. This can result in a smaller overall size of the Saint Berdoodle litter. More commonly, there are additional breeds incorporated either intentionally or by luck that result in smaller Saint Berdoodles. A great example can be seen in the photo of Nibbler below. Nibbler is genuinely a tiny Saint Berdoodle. But he comes with a twist… Nibbler the St Berdoodle. Photo used with permission from Psychostretch on Flickr. What is the Saint Berdoodle Lifespan? The lifespan of a Saint Berdoodle is halfway between that of its parent breeds. Expect years. The smaller the Saint Bernard Poodle mix, the longer the lifespan. Miniature St Berdoodles would expect to trend toward a longer lifespan. This is because the smaller breed lives longer. Two servings of Toast! Photo used with explicit permission. Affectionate, loving, and highly intelligent. Intelligent dogs can be easily and quickly trained. They are capable of advanced tricks and behaviors. Potty training for such a smart breed can begin early, and the right approach should not take long. Neither parent breed is nippy or super prone to biting. They can be extremely patient with new situations and children. No dog follows these general trends entirely, though — so be cautious and mindful. Watch for problem biting or heavy mouthing early and positively redirect behaviors consistently from puppyhood. Saint Bernards are not considered to be aggressive or destructive. Individual dogs may have some issues, but there is no bred predisposition inherited from either parent breed. Are Saint Berdoodles good with kids? Saint Berdoodles are known to be child friendly. Like any more giant breed, be mindful of the size discrepancy, especially when they are puppies. A large excited dog can scare or accidentally hurt a younger child. You should never leave a small child unattended with a dog or puppy — even if they are trusted. Nibbler the St Berdoodle. Are St Berdoodles okay with other animals? Most owners report that their St Berdoodles are friendly and affectionate to other dogs. Many are adopted into homes that have several dogs already. If you introduce them slowly and look for any possible negative issues early — integrating a Saint Berdoodle with existing dogs is possible. I asked St Berdoodle owners about tolerating cats and got a slightly less warm response. Each circumstance will be different, so there is no strict rule for doing Berdoodles like cats. They mostly ignore each other. The cat stays up high, and Xena is too busy having fun to bother chasing. St Berdoodles are gentle giants, but they do have daily exercise needs. Most require at least 20 minutes of light-moderate exercise per day. They can also get this from minutes of self-directed play. Some Saint Berdoodles will have a much higher requirement. In general, though, be cautious with the extra-large giant breeds as their greater mass requires a lot more effort to do physical activity. Particularly in the warmer months, ensure lots of breaks for your Saint Berdoodle. Saint Berdoodles do not make good running partners. As a general rule, the body weight and wear and tear on joints make giant breeds or hybrids unsuitable for endurance exercise. So running a half marathon with your Saint Berdoodle is unlikely. I asked owners if their Saint Berdoodles like to swim, and all owners bar one reported their dog loves to swim! Some said it took a little time for them to warm up to the water. There are no guarantees — but slowly introducing your St Berdoodle to water should result in a dog that will join you at the lake or beach. Be mindful of sand and dirt from swimming, getting caught in the deepest part of a low-shedding Poodle mix coat. The hairs can trap the grit. If this gets found beneath a harness, then it can result in friction or rubbing. This can easily damage the skin and cause discomfort. Be mindful when swimming with your Saint Berdoodle! Photo: Adelaide Addy the beautiful St Berdoodle. Photo used with permission. Do Saint Berdoodles shed? A Saint Bernard Poodle cross can inherit traits from both parent breeds. For many, the ideal situation is that the non-shedding and allergy-friendly coat of the Poodle is inherited. At the end of the day, though, cross-breeding is a genetic lottery — and some St Berdoodles will shed — and some will not. A general indicator of whether your St Berdoodle will shed is the type of coat they have. Just like a Goldendoodle, there can be three coat types. A straight coat is a hair coat that typically resembles a Saint Bernard. Expect hair to be dropped by this type of St Berdoodle cat. A wavy coat is the halfway point between the two parent breed coats. Wavy coats do not typically shed. They are teddy-bear like and majestic. Wavy and curly-coated St Berdoodles will usually have furnishings facial hair , which gives them a distinct teddy look. A curly coat essentially a Poodle coat is the least likely to shed. The densely wound curls are typically not dropped. The best indicator for the type of coat a Saint Berdoodle will have is first looking at the parents or previous litters. Secondly, check with the breeder for the genetic tests and markers as if they tested, they can identify the likelihood of a non-shedding coat. The same general principles apply when predicting coat types for Poodle mix puppies. Our Goldendoodle coat type prediction article will help you figure out which type of St Berdoodle coat you have. When this is not possible, you can look at the developmental markers to make an educated guess. The same principles apply as detailed in our article about how to predict the coat type of a Goldendoodle. Separation Anxiety in Saint Berdoodles Like many Poodle mixes, we need to be mindful of the strong attachment that forms between Saint Berdoodle and your family. Breeds like the Bernedoodle and Labradoodle are known for experiencing separation anxiety. The same is true for the giant Saint Berdoodle. This is indeed a problem as there are many instances where a dog needs to be able to cope with being alone. The cause, however, is actually from a beautiful place. The reason Saint Berdoodles can develop separation anxiety is due to their caring and loving nature. Both parent breeds have a strong desire to integrate into your family pack. They want to be part of the family! They can come to understand the routine if we guide them. So it is fairly scary for some dogs when you leave the house. They feel abandoned. Separation anxiety for St Berdoodles can vary from a mild case of whining right through to severe anxiety and destructive behaviors. Luckily there are guidelines for animal behavior experts to help manage and minimize the impact of separation anxiety. Like most social Poodle mix breeds — Saint Berdoodles will do well in a family situation where they can be around their owners as much as possible. They are sturdy and hardy — but prefer to live indoors close to their owners. Physically they are capable of living outside for long periods — but their social demands mean they will often be huge indoor dogs. Health Issues for St Berdoodles Poodle mix breeds can inherit health problems from either parent breed. In general, though, both the Poodle and Saint Bernard are relatively healthy dogs. Be mindful of skin conditions both breeds and stick with a simple natural diet to avoid food allergies. Larger dog breeds can have problems with knees especially patellar laxation and limbs — so consult a Veterinarian early and consistently to monitor for issues. Did you know that dogs have two knees AND two elbows!? Crazy right? In general, you would be hopeful for a healthy, happy dog without too many complications. Health is a game of chance, though, so regular checks are vital. It is stunningly pretty Poodle Mix with the possibility of a non-shedding coat. While chatting with St Berdoodle owners, my love for this type of dog has deepened. When we get a larger dog, the cross will definitely make the list of possibilities. Every owner I spoke to cherished the positive attitude and affection their Saint Berdoodle provided. With an active mind, they are trainable if a little cheeky sometimes. Are sure to keep them busy with puzzles and indoor games to prevent boredom. Final note: Owners say that people often get their dog confused with a Bernedoodle a very different but also lovely breed. My wife and I love playing with our active miniature Labradoodle Max. We want all Oodle puppies to be healthy and happy, have lots of fun and be part of the family. Load More. People love the hypoallergenic coats of Saint Berdoodles, which are usually low-shedding or non-shedding. Saint Berdoodles have wonderful temperaments and are usually great with kids. Saint Berdoodles have hybrid vigor, which results from crossing two purebred dogs. Hybrid vigor typically results in a healthier offspring, and Saint Berdoodles have a much longer life expectancy than a purebred Saint Bernard. Purebred St Bernards usually live years; whereas Saint Berdoodles are usually expected to live years. Anyone who has owned and loved a Saint Bernard might wonder why anyone would get a Saint Berdoodle instead. There's a seven-fold answer for why Saint Berdoodles win the battle for many families. St Bernard vs St Berdoodle Hypoallergenic: St Berdoodles usually have low-to-non shedding coats like poodles and are typically far better for people with allergies than a purebred Saint Bernard, which sheds its coat. Health: Hybrid vigor typically improves a dog's health. There's a reason that humans don't marry our relatives. Saint Berdoodles tend to have fewer health issues than a pure Saint Bernard. Intelligence: Poodles consistently rank as one of the top if not THE top breeds for intelligence. Saint Berdoodles are very quick learners. Trainability: Usually the St Berdoodle's increased intelligence makes them an easy dog to train. Saint Berdoodles love pleasing their owner. Walking Partner: Although Saint Berdoodles are one of the lowest energy doodles, they tend to be more active than a somewhat lethargic purebred Saint Bernard who usually prefers to lounge all day. Although a Saint Berdoodle will not be an active runner like a Goldendoodle, Labradoodle, Aussiedoodle, or Springerdoodle, you can usually take a Saint Berdoodle for a long walk--more so than a purebred Saint Bernard. Nathan Crockett was one of the first breeders to raise top quality Saint Berdoodles. We have people from all over the U. Saint Berdoodle Pricing. Life Span Did You Know? Although a mixed-breed dog can take on any combination of traits from one or both of their parent breeds, well-socialized Saint Berdoodles tend to be affectionate and loving dogs with sweet natures and social personalities. This designer dog breed may not be recognized by the American Kennel Club, but they are still recognized by other notable dog organizations. The Saint Berdoodle is a gentle giant that makes a great addition to any family. Well-socialized, they tend to be social and friendly with charming, cheerful personalities. They also tend to be affectionate, loving, and highly intelligent dogs. These dogs can be good watchdogs as they are initially wary of strangers and will alert you when someone is on the property. Although Saint Berdoodles do tend to have a protective instinct over their family and territory, they tend to be quite social and friendly and do not tend to be aggressive provided they have been properly socialized and trained. Saint Berdoodles are moderately adaptable dogs. Due to their sheer size, they are better suited to larger homes with yards where they can run and roam freely. They could potentially adapt to apartment living if they are given enough exercise, attention, and mental stimulation, but their size will definitely be a challenge in smaller spaces. This dog adapts well to most moderate climates. As a large, fluffy dog, they are also sensitive to heat and can easily overheat. Because a Saint Berdoodle craves attention, bonds closely with their family, and loves being with them, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. A crossbred dog can inherit the potential health concerns common to one, both, or neither of the parent breeds. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of Saint Berdoodle puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to ensure that they are not passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you ask the breeder about the genetic history of both of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a large dog, the Saint Berdoodle is also at a higher risk of bloat just like both parent breeds. Bloat in dogs can become dangerous quickly and is fatal if the stomach flips. Although the Saint Berdoodle will grow to be a giant dog, they tend to be gentle and highly trainable. Their high intelligence and eagerness to please means they pick up on things quickly and are relatively easy to train. This makes them a good fit for owners of all experience levels. They respond best to positive training methods that are calm and consistent and focused on reward and praise. Puppy training classes are always an option and can be a good opportunity to socialize a puppy, which is even more important in a dog this size. The maintenance your Saint Berdoodle requires will depend completely on the coat they inherit. But, they will require daily brushing and professional grooming every weeks. Once or twice monthly nail trimming is usually enough to keep them from growing too long and causing issues. You can also support your efforts to prevent dental diseases later in life with dental hygiene chews and treats approved by your vet. Saint Berdoodles tend to have a moderate energy level. They will be energetic while playing and require some exercise, but they will be happy to be a couch potato every now and then. Daily walks plus some time to play are usually enough for this big dog. They may not be a good fit for a running partner, but your Saint Berdoodle may enjoy going on hikes with you, taking trips to the dog park, or even going swimming. Just make sure you keep activities low impact until their bones and joints finish growing and developing. A fully-grown Saint Berdoodle usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs pounds. They are one of the largest dog breeds. Saint Berdoodles generally live for years on average. This designer dog breed is most commonly known as a Saint Berdoodle, but they are also sometimes called a Saint Berpoo. Featured Saint Berdoodle Article. Exercise Grooming In the past, the English bulldog was used by foreign immigrants who moved to South America and brought their dogs with them. The breed, however, became close to extinction after the second world war. Some breeders, John D. Johnson, and Alan Scott kept infusing several bulldogs together in the bid to breed the American Bulldog while monitoring its health and capabilities. Today, the American bulldog is completely rid of the fear of being extinct and has become one of the most popular dog breeds in the country. The American bulldog is many sizes larger than the English Bulldog; however, they are quite similar when it comes to their temperament. It is basically a huge, cuddly, lap dog that loves children and is very affectionate. It is brave, confident and extremely loyal to its owners. They can be quite reserved when around strangers as they like to mark their territories. When trained from a young age, the American Bulldog will display an impressive level of intelligence. They are not so friendly with other strange dogs and mostly like to keep to themselves. As earlier stated, the American bulldog is a fun-loving, happy dog that thrives in a family setting. The perfect environment for this breed would be a home with a large backyard that is well fenced-in. Since they are very energetic and must be kept active, it is imperative to their growth that they have ample space to run around during the day. This is crucial for their mental and physical well-being. For dog lovers who live in apartments, the American bulldog might not be the best option for them. This is because there is inadequate space for them and being left alone would adversely affect their mental health. They can also become very irritable and destructive if left alone for long periods as they need constant mental and physical stimulation. The American Bulldog needs about two hours of outdoor exercise on a daily basis. It goes without saying that this breed is not suitable for people who work many hours every day. This dog breed requires basic physical and mental stimulation like jogging, walking, chasing balls, playing fetch, farm work, agility, and basic obedience exercises. Due to the temperament of the American Bulldog, it has to get as much exercise preferably in the outdoors. If its exercise requirements are not consistently met, this dog breed will take out its frustration in your home by chewing apart and basically destroying everything it comes in contact with while running around. The American Bulldog has quite a short coat with a minimized length and this feature makes it easy to groom. Brushing their coats weekly is usually enough when it comes to grooming the American Bulldog as they do not shed a lot. They also need thorough baths weekly or as needed as this will keep the shedding in check. Our American Bulldog puppies for sale come from either USDA licensed commercial breeders or hobby breeders with no more than 5 breeding mothers. We only purchase puppies from the very best sources, and we stand behind every puppy we sell. American Bulldogs love routine and will adapt to an exercise and grooming routine if the owner enforces it perfectly. As loyal dogs, they love to please their owners but will only obey upon frequent reinforcements. Do American Bulldogs shed a lot? Since they do not have a lot of fur, they do not shed a lot and owners will not have a lot of hair to clean up, unlike many other dog breeds. Why do American Bulldogs have webbed feet? This is mainly due to genetics and is not a cause for concern. Should American Bulldogs be spayed? Many vets advise that American Bulldog owners should ensure their pets are neutered or spayed when it is between four and nine months. How often should American Bulldogs be fed? The American bulldog has a very large appetite in its formative years. They must, therefore, be fed very often about four times daily and in double portions when they are puppies right until they turn four. Are American Bulldogs a food fit in families? The American bulldog will fit right into your family. They love kids and tend to gravitate towards them. Do American Bulldogs have common health problems? A lot of the health problems experienced by American bulldogs are mostly genetic and do not affect the entire breed. These ailments could range from the kidney to thyroid disorders and a lot more. What is the American Bulldogs life expectancy? The American bulldog has an average lifespan ranging from ten to fifteen years. What is the American Bulldogs average size? The average American Bulldog can grow to 58kg for males and 41kg for females. However, it is important that their diets are closely monitored to keep them from getting overweight. How tall do American Bulldogs get? The male American bulldog can grow as tall as 71cm while its female counterpart can grow up to 61cm. Therefore, owners need to provide proper daily exercise to control their excessive energy and keep them healthier. Suitable for Kids — Pups of Golden and Labrador retrievers are great companions for families, especially for those who have little kids. These pups love to play with children and exhibit a lot of patience around them. Socialization — These pups are very social because they can gel well with other pets and strangers. However, they need a little bit of training to make the most of their friendly nature. Sport Loving — These breeds love to be a part of different dog sports. For example, swimming and other water sports are among their favorite activities. They also love to play small games, like fetch a ball. What is Better about a Golden Retriever Puppy? Golden Retriever pups are very intelligent and energetic. This means that they will need plenty of mental and physical exertion. Fortunately, they love to sleep in between their playing activities. Not only does this keep your dog fresh, but it also gives the owners some time to relax or work. Keeping your dog fresh is excellent for resolving barking issues. Golden puppies are an amazing addition to any family. This is because they have a loving nature and do very well with children, other pets, and even strangers. What is Better about a Labrador Puppy? Labrador pups are even-tempered with great levels of intelligence. This makes them easy to train, especially the training of staying alone for short periods. Pups of this breed bark quite often so they would prefer backyard living. However, they can stay happily in other living environments, like apartments and indoor houses, if trained properly. Labradors are superb family companions and guard dogs. These pups have an excellent intellectual level and work great whenever an intruder approaches their family. These puppies require great attention and cannot stay alone. Hence, they are ideal for people who have more time for their pets. Otherwise, you will have to deal with unscheduled sleep or train your pooch to play alone. They are slightly rough which means only experienced owners should get Golden retriever puppies. Who Should Get a Labrador Puppy? This breed is preferable for those owners who have a backyard in their house. This is because Labrador puppies bark a lot. However, you will have to do some extra effort for training your canine friend. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. These retriever cousins are both active and friendly sporting dogs full of adoration, energy, and good humor! But do you know what sets them apart? By Tracey L. Kelley After loving 19 cats, 11 dogs, and a canary, Tracey married someone allergic to all those creatures. Thankfully, she receives oodles of animal goodness sharing stories on Daily Paws! When not traveling, teaching yoga, or doing voiceover projects, she's an editorial strategist and developer for print, digital, and multimedia platforms. Daily Paws' Editorial Guidelines Published on May 17, Sometimes when you're scrolling through photos of adorable puppies or sweet rescue dogs , it's difficult to know which one might be your perfect pooch pal. However, the more you know about a particular breed's general characteristics, health, and environment for his best life, the greater chance you'll have choosing a terrific pet! Many people wonder about the differences between golden retrievers vs. Labrador retrievers because they're kind of doggie cousins. The American Kennel Club AKC classifies dogs into seven categories, based on the type of purpose the dogs were originally bred to have. Goldens and Labs are from the sporting group and as retrievers, are often exceptional outdoor companions, exercise buddies, and family members. She says when deciding between a golden retriever vs. Lab for your family, keep in mind there will always be breed stereotypes, so the more you can learn about a pup or rescue dog's background, the better. Labrador retriever deliberation: either one could be a great doggo for you! But Myers adds that if you're a slightly less active person, a golden might be a better match. They're super pets for families with children , especially when socialized at a young age. They both do well with other pets , too. As retrievers, they're usually good swimmers, because they were bred to fetch waterfowl for hunters. But it's still important to train them in this sport to keep them safe. Both breeds live approximately 10—12 years. Myers says goldens and Labs share health concerns such as allergies , and joint problems like knee and hip dysplasia. Individually, Labs are prone to obesity , and golden retrievers to congenital heart defects and cancer. Although they're retriever cousins, Labs and goldens are from separate parts of the world. Labrador retrievers originated on the island of Newfoundland in the most eastern province of Canada, Labrador. Interestingly, there are actually three different types of golden retrievers , hailing from Britain, the United States, and Canada, respectively. When you see these dogs cozied up by one other, especially a yellow or golden Lab and a golden retriever, there's a slight sporting dog family resemblance, but also key points to help tell them apart. Noses are still boopable on both! Both retrievers are double-coated breeds, so they'll 'blow coat' at least twice a year. But if there was a medal given for shedding , Myers says there's a clear winner. Is a golden retriever the same as yellow Lab? But if you've read this far, you already know that. However, there is a mixed breed known as a Goldador that has golden and Labrador retriever parents, so a pretty yellow color might come from both of them. So Myers says a good hooman for a Lab doesn't have knick-knacks on coffee tables. His rudder-like tail helps him propel him while swimming, so it's strong! Golden retrievers usually have fan-like tails, which might also pose a threat to anything delicate in their wiggly wake. Golden Retriever vs. We truly don't want to say one breed is better than the other: it simply depends on which one fits your personality and lifestyle. With Myers' help, we've created a little cheat sheet. You could be more of a golden retriever lover if you're: Willing to be the sun, moon, and stars to this pet, because she'll be the same for you! Appreciative of a good-natured pooch simply happy to exist, even if she might not have many ideas of her own. Not planning to leave her alone for long stretches of time during the day. Able to provide a solid training foundation so she can be an eager helper in the family and stay mentally and physically stimulated. You might prefer a Labrador retriever buddy if you: Really desire a canine best pal and loyal companion—but can say no to extra begs for treats. Understand how smart he is and keep him engaged with physical and mental opportunities. Are able to manage his need for balance between activity and downtime. Can train him for useful work such as hunting , fishing, farm chores, and so on. Was this page helpful? When thinking of Golden Retrievers and Labradors, many people assume they are essentially the same dog. Some people believe that a Golden Retriever is basically just a Labrador with longer hair. While the two breeds do share a lot of similarities, they also have some important differences. What Is a Golden Retriever? Lord Tweedmouth of Scotland wanted to create a highly intelligent dog that was friendly, determined, and very beautiful. It was also important that this dog could withstand the cold winters in Scotland. It is believed that the first Goldens came from a combination of the yellow Retriever, the Bloodhound, and the now-extinct Tweed Water Spaniel. After centuries of careful breeding and refining, we now have the Golden Retrievers we know today. The modern Golden Retriever is known as an ideal family dog. Known for their friendly nature and enthusiasm, Golden Retrievers make for excellent therapy dogs in hospital settings or nursing homes. Golden Retrievers are also known for their exceptional intelligence. They are very easy to train and have a remarkable eagerness to please. These qualities make them great service dogs or guide dogs for handicapped individuals, such as visually impaired people. While Golden Retrievers make excellent working dogs, they also have a very relaxed nature in an everyday setting. Most Goldens can be found lounging beside their owner or accompanying them for walks, water play, and more. The Labrador Retriever has origins dating back to the early s in Newfoundland, Canada. These dogs eventually intermingled and bred, leading to the St. The St. Thanks to several favorable characteristics, the Labrador has earned a spot as the number 1 most popular dog breed from the American Kennel Club. Much like Goldens, Labrador Retrievers are amazing family dogs. They are fun, friendly, and highly intelligent. Bred as water dogs, they enjoy playing outdoors and have very high energy. Labradors make excellent working dogs because they are easy to train and eager to please. They are very loyal, becoming devoted to their owners early on. This makes them great service dogs, often being seen as guide dogs. It seems like the two are remarkably similar! Check out this comprehensive breakdown of the similarities and differences between Golden Retrievers and Labradors below: General Appearance of Golden Retrievers and Labradors The Similarities Golden Retrievers and Labradors are both the same general size, being considered medium-to-large dogs. The average Golden Retriever can weigh anywhere between 60 and 75 pounds, while the average Labrador weighs between 60 to 85 pounds. Weights differ slightly between males and females of each breed. Both breeds stand at a similar stature, growing to be anywhere between 20 to 24 inches tall. As with most retrievers, both breeds were bred to work in the water. That is why they both have webbed feet, making it easier for them to swim. The Differences The most notable difference between Goldens and Labradors is their coat. Both are double-coated breeds, meaning they have a top coat and an undercoat. With that said, their coats are not the same. Golden Retrievers have longer, thicker coats than Labradors. Their hair may be described as long, flowing, and feathery. It typically lies straight against the body, with some slight waves as it gets longer. For this reason, Golden Retrievers do need more extensive grooming than Labradors. That would consist of regular brushing and trips to a professional dog groomer. While they get their name from their golden hair, Goldens do come in a variety of shades. Their hair ranges anywhere from a whiter golden hue referred to as English Cream Goldens to a shade of gold with a reddish hue. The most common and standard shade for a Golden Retriever is a yellow-gold color. Labrador Retrievers have a double coat, just as Goldens, but their coats are much shorter. Their hair is short and dense, feeling slightly stiff to the touch. Their thick undercoat contains natural oils that are actually water-repellant. Unlike Goldens, Labradors come in a broader range of shades. There are yellow Labs, which have a white-to-golden colored hue. There are chocolate Labs, which have a rich brown hue. Finally, there are black Labs, which have a deep black hue to their coat. Personality and Demeanor of Golden Retrievers and Labradors The Similarities Goldens and Labradors have very similar personalities in terms of friendliness. This is why they both rank among the top four most popular family dogs. They are both devoted companions who are consistently eager to please their owners. They are both also highly intelligent, making it easy to train them to do several things for both recreational or service purposes. The Differences A key difference in demeanor between the two breeds is their hyperactivity level. While both breeds are highly driven and enjoy exercise, many owners note that Labradors can be very hyper. These high energy levels are especially apparent in younger Labs. On the other hand, Goldens are more likely to enjoy a simple, relaxing time with their owner. They have the same lifespan, living anywhere between years. In some instances, your Lab or Golden may live as long as years! Goldens and Labs are both predisposed to several health concerns, including hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, bloat, laryngeal paralysis, ear infections, retinal atrophy, and certain heart disorders. The Differences Some health issues differ between Goldens and Labs. One of which is exercise-induced collapse. While Goldens can acquire this, young Labradors have a higher predisposition because of their slightly higher energy levels. While Labradors can develop several types of cancer, Goldens have shown to be slightly more prone to certain cancers, including hemangiosarcomas. All in all, both Goldens and Labs can make a great family pet. They provide lots of love, fun, and years of loyalty. With that said, their slight differences are essential to consider. If you need help determining which type of dog will best suit your family and lifestyle, you can always consult with your veterinarian and local, reputable breeders. But we are here to help you choose between these similarly wonderful breeds. The result of this original cross breeding and later modifications is the Golden Retriever, a dog famous for its devoted, big-hearted personality and rich golden coat. The Golden was bred to be a sporting dog. This means that it is adept at finding and retrieving birds and other game brought down by hunters. As a Retriever, the Golden is bred for a soft, gentle mouth and an obedient, highly trainable temperament. Like other Retriever breeds, they were often used to retrieve waterfowl, and still retain their love of water. Golden Retrievers can vary in appearance depending on where they were bred. There are differences in British, American, and Canadian Goldens. The British type is generally larger and more muscular than the other two. There are also some coat variations among the three types too. The Labrador Retriever When it comes to sheer numbers, the Lab has ranked 1 in popularity among all dog breeds for many years. The Labrador was first developed in Newfoundland Canada from other local dogs like the St. The Lab was used as a working water dog, to help fishermen retrieve nets and haul gear. Their love of water and expert retrieving ability made them ideal waterfowl retrievers for hunters who brought the breed to the U. But these days there are two different types of Labrador Retriever. They differ in both looks and temperament. The American type Labrador Retriever is sensitive, intelligent, and active. The English type is generally larger, calmer, and less energetic than its American counterpart. Although it can also be a little sillier! Both types of Lab are famously friendly, playful, and outgoing. Besides being a popular family pet, they are also frequently trained as service dogs. As are Golden Retrievers, and Golden Lab mixes too! So as you can see the Golden Retriever vs Labrador histories are fairly similar in terms of their working purpose. But although they have quite similar histories, what about their stature? Golden Retriever vs Labrador Size Both Golden Retrieverss and Labs are popular choices for people interested in medium to large sized dogs. Generally, at an average of 24 inches tall and 75lbs, the Lab is a slightly larger dog than the Golden, who istypically just half an inch and 5lbs lighter. While breed standards are exacting for show quality dogs, remember that a pet quality dog can be larger or smaller than the breed standard, depending on the individual animal. The overall body type of Golden vs Lab reflects the size difference between the two breeds. The proportions of the Golden tend to be elegant and symmetrical. Labs are generally more solid and sturdy than overly refined. Labrador vs Golden Grooming Coat type, grooming requirements, and amount of shedding often play a large role in the Golden Retriever vs Labrador decision making process. Many people think Labs require less maintenance. Is this true? The Golden Retriever has a medium length double coat, consisting of a water repellant top coat and a soft undercoat. They have longer feathering fur on the neck, legs, and tail. They are sometimes bred for longer, silkier coats than what is described in the breed standard. Many owners like soft, flowing coats while breed purists say that as hunting dogs, should have more moderate coats. All Golden Retrievers, regardless of coat length and texture, require regular grooming. The undercoat grows denser in cold weather and sheds in warm weather. Use of an undercoat rake can help remove loose fur from the undercoat. For the top coat a good quality slicker brush is a must-have. Some also like steel tooth combs. I recommend brushing these long haired lovelies at least twice a week. This also involves trimming some of the longer fur with scissors, specifically thinning shears. Areas that require regular trimming with scissors include the ears, feet, neck, and tail. The coat of a Golden Retriever should never be shaved. Besides maintaining the coat, basic grooming needs for a Golden also include baths, nail trimmings, and ear and teeth cleaning. Remember that drop eared dogs are prone to ear infections. So how does Golden Retriever grooming compare with Labrador Retriever grooming? Also like the Golden Retriever, the Lab does shed its undercoat in warm weather. However, while their coat length is short, they do have a double coat that needs maintenance. Labs require an undercoat rake to remove the dead hair from the undercoat. You can then use a slicker brush for an overall grooming. Nail trimming and ear cleaning should also be a regular part of your grooming routine. Labs generally need to be bathed less frequently than Goldens, although if they are a fan of rolling in muck this can ramp up. Golden Retriever vs Labrador Shedding Both Labs and Goldens have double coats consisting of a top coat and an undercoat. The undercoat will shed in warmer weather in both breeds, but does one dog shed more than the other? Golden Retrievers can shed quite a bit all year round. Besides normal, everyday shedding, their undercoat grows thicker in the winter and sheds in the spring. The best way cope with shedding in a Golden is with a good brushing every few days; once weekly brushing may not be adequate. Besides regular brushing, your dog will need regular grooming sessions with an undercoat rake, especially during shedding season. This will only be at the beginning. Once you start doing it regularly, a once weekly raking should be fine. Grooming your Golden outdoors can be a good way to reduce the amount of hair in the house. How does Golden Retriever vs Labrador shedding compare? Labrador Retriever shedding Labs shed as much as, if not more than, the average dog. Fur in the house can be controlled by outdoor grooming sessions. So Golden Retriever vs Labrador shedding is similar, but Goldens usually require more day to day grooming. Their long hairs also show up more when they do shed than the black or chocolate Lab , due to their light color. Neither of them are low shedding dogs. Golden Retriever vs Labrador Colors The Labrador Retriever breed standard recognizes three solid coat colors: black , yellow , and chocolate. No other color variations are acceptable in show quality Labs. The yellow and chocolate colors can both vary in shading from light to dark. Golden Retrievers are, of course, golden in color. The breed standard describes it as a rich, lustrous golden that can vary from dark to light, although very light and very dark are not accepted in show quality dogs. Some have lighter colored fur on the areas where the coat is long and feathery, such as the tail, neck, and legs. Yellow Labs and Goldens can have very similar coat coloring, but their coat types will be true to breed. Comparing Temperament Traits The words commonly used to describe the temperaments of both Goldens and Labs are the words we use to describe very good dogs! Both breeds are friendly, reliable, affectionate, gentle, trusting, and kind. But many potential owners wonder about the differences between Lab and Golden Retriever personalities. Meeting the parents, good training and socialization practices from puppyhood into adulthood are the best ways to ensure that you get the kind of dog you want. Labs and Golden Retrievers are both very trainable and obedient, which is good news for novice owners. Canine behavior experts explain the minor temperament differences between Goldens and Labs in terms of degrees. Generally, Golden Retrievers are said to be a bit softer, gentler, and more sensitive than Labs. While both do well in families with children, Labs tend to have the advantage in adapting to households with boisterous, lively, and loud young children. Many Golden Retrievers prefer a slightly more calm and tranquil home environment. An active family with young children may prefer an energetic Lab, while a retired couple may welcome a gentle Golden instead. Health Problems in Golden Retrievers and Labradors Like most purebred dogs, both breeds can suffer from inherited health problems. What are the main health issues potential owners should know about in both breeds? Genetic Diseases Golden Retrievers can suffer from hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as eye and heart problems. Labs also can be prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, eye disease, and a condition known as exercise induced collapse. The cancer incidence rate in US jumped in the s, suggesting a recent genetic mutation. The Golden Retriever Lifetime Study is an important long-term project that studies cancer in Goldens. Researchers have made great progress in understanding the genetic and environmental risk factors for cancer. Two types of cancer are especially common in Golden Retrievrs: hemangiosarcoma cancer of the blood vessel walls, affecting the spleen and heart and lymphoma cancer of immune system cells, affecting lymph nodes, liver, and spleen. Obesity Labrador Retrievers are at an increased risk for obesity compared to other dog breeds. Recent genetic research, led by the GOdogs project at Cambridge University, has found a genetic mutation that affects appetite and obesity in Labradors and Flat-Coated Retrievers. Dogs with 2 copies of the gene are on average 4 kg heavier than non-carriers. The affected dogs also score higher on food motivation tests. Weight management is important for all dogs, but especially for breeds at higher risk for obesity. When looking at Golden Retriever vs Labrador health as an overall picture, the Labrador probably comes out on top. The high risk problems in Labs are often avoidable through health testing. With Goldies these tests still need to be carried out, but there is the added life limiting risk of cancer. If you are looking for an energetic, intelligent, and outgoing dog to keep up with your active lifestyle, particularly if you have children, the Lab might be the perfect dog for you. You will have to watch their weight, and make sure that you get your puppy from fully health tested parents. If a loving, kind, and gentle dog is more your speed, be sure to consider the Golden. Golden Retrievers also need fully health tested parents, but there is the added risk of cancer in Golden Retrievers to consider. Then maybe a Goldador is what you are really looking for! Main Differences Between Golden Retrievers vs. Labradors The main differences between Golden Retrievers and Labradors are: Golden Retrievers are originally from Scotland, whereas Labradors are originally from Canada. Golden Retrievers are fairly light for their size, whereas Labradors are much heavier. Golden Retrievers have a slimmer ribcage, whereas Labradors have a much broader chest. Golden Retrievers have a long, feathery outer coat, whereas Labradors have a short, oily outer coat. Golden Retrievers range in color from light cream to fox-red , whereas Labradors come in a variety of colors. Golden Retrievers are very clingy and dependent on their owners, whereas Labradors are more independent. Golden Retrievers love competition, whereas Labradors prefer not to be in competition with others. Golden Retrievers are more cautious in new situations, whereas Labradors tend to go full-throttle into any new situation. Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers suit different kinds of owners and living situations. They both require a lot of love and attention and will bring you plenty of joy! Golden Retrievers vs. Labradors: Introduction Golden Retrievers and Labradors are two of the most well-loved breeds of dogs in the world! In fact, the Labrador ranks as the number-one favorite breed, and the Golden Retriever comes in at third place just behind the German Shepherd in second place according to surveys conducted by the AKC for .These dogs are both loveable, can fit into big and small families, do well with other animals and small children, and are full of personality. However, as I touched on earlier, there are some key differences between the two breeds to keep in mind. Labradors: Origins Dogs have been selectively bred for various reasons by humans for millennia. The Golden Retriever and the Labrador are no different—each breed was originally developed for a specific purpose. These dogs were bred as gun dogs. More specifically, they were bred to have very large yet soft and gentle mouths to carefully retrieve prey their owner had shot. This makes them very useful for duck hunting, quail hunting, rabbit hunting, and fox hunting! Labrador Labradors were originally bred in Canada in the mids by fishermen and hunters who took to the rivers and lakes to hunt birds, fish, or other small mammals. Similar to the Golden Retriever, Labradors were also bred to have large, soft mouths so they would not damage the prey they retrieved for their owners. For many years, Labradors were mainly bred as water gun dogs. They are strong swimmers and were often used to dive into lakes, rivers, or marshes to retrieve prey from the water. However, due to the way each dog has been bred over the years, they have slightly different average weights. Golden Retriever Goldens typically weigh in at 55 to 75 pounds on average. They were bred to be lightweight and agile in order to move faster and chase after prey their owners shot down on hunting trips. Labrador Labradors typically weigh in at 55 to 80 pounds on average. This is because they have been bred to have denser bones that make them heavier. Labradors: Build Goldens and Labradors look fairly similar in height. However, Goldens are typically described as being more graceful and slimmer-looking than Labradors. This is because the two breeds have a slightly different bone structure in their chests. Golden Retriever Golden Retrievers have slim, narrow chests. They were bred to have this slim chest because the underbrush in the Scottish Highlands is very dense and can be difficult to run through. Their narrow, thinner build allowed them to cut through the dense underbrush and chase after fallen prey quickly. Labrador Labradors, on the other hand, were bred to chase after prey in the water. They have much broader chests compared to Goldens, which makes them look quite stocky. This is not purely an aesthetic difference! One is long-haired, and the other short-haired. This is not a mistake in their breeding. These dogs were selectively bred for their long and short coats as they perform specific functions! Golden Retriever Golden Retrievers have a dense undercoat to protect them against the freezing weather of the Scottish Highland winters. Interestingly, though, their long outer coats have very little to do with keeping them warm. Labrador Labradors also have a dense undercoat to protect them from the freezing Canadian winters and icy cold water. On top of their undercoat is a thick, short outer coat of fur that is slightly oily to the touch. This oily outer coat acts as a barrier against water. Labradors: Coloration There tends to be a lot of confusion over the coloration of Labradors and Golden Retrievers. Some people believe the breeds are so similar that they come in the same colors. In reality, though, the two breeds each have their own distinct range of coat colors. Golden Retriever Golden Retrievers have a small color range with no visible markings in their coat. There are no black, gray, brindled, or spotted purebred Golden Retrievers. As Goldens get older, their coat color gradually deepens into a darker golden or fox-red color, and they do not go gray! Labrador Purebred Labradors only come in three different colors. They can be a light creamy yellow color, brown which is also known as chocolate , or black. Labradors do not have any visible patches, spots, stripes, or markings in their coats. The coat color they are born with is generally the color they will stay. However, they will develop gray hairs that are focused around the muzzle and eyes as they grow older. Some dogs are incredibly needy by nature and will need you to be home a lot, while other breeds are much more laid-back and independent. They need their humans to be around often, and they are happiest when they get regular physical attention in the form of cuddles, games, walks, and puzzles. Unfortunately, this also means Goldens are prone to developing separation anxiety if they are not trained carefully or their routine is interrupted and they suffer some kind of trauma. Keep in mind, too, that these dogs are incredibly intelligent, and they can become equally destructive if they feel abandoned or are allowed to become bored. Labrador Labradors are far more independent dogs compared to Golden Retrievers. They are happy to make their own fun and games, run outside by themselves, and generally will not develop separation anxiety as easily as Goldens or other similarly clingy breeds. However, they are also highly intelligent and can still become destructive if they are allowed to become bored and are not exercised regularly. Labradors: Trainability And Competitiveness Both breeds of dogs were bred to be very active and intelligent and to perform specific jobs for their human companions. As a result, both breeds are highly trainable and task-oriented. However, the way each breed tends to go about completing these tasks, especially when met with competition, is very different from one another. Golden Retriever Golden Retrievers are highly competitive by nature and love a challenge. They are people pleasers and will constantly try to find ways to gain your approval. This means they will try to out-compete other dogs for your affection and attention, especially if you have given them a task to do. Fortunately, this is all in good fun, as they are happy pack animals and do not display aggression in more competitive settings. Labrador Labradors, on the other hand, do not like competition and can become fairly grouchy and upset if they constantly have to compete with other dogs for your affection, attention, or task completion. Unlike Goldens, these dogs prefer to work alone when they have been given a job to do and will eagerly demand their praise whether you have time for it or not. Labradors: Overall Temperament Before deciding on which breed you want to bring into your home, one of the most important things you need to decide on is which breed matches your lifestyle the best. Golden Retrievers and Labradors have very different personalities and fit better into certain homes and family structures. Golden Retriever Goldens have very cautious temperaments. They do not run head-first into a situation before carefully thinking about and trying to solve the problem in their heads. While their Golden Retrievers are weighing up the pros and cons of a situation, some less patient owners often get tired of waiting and force their dogs into a position where they have not decided if they are comfortable or not. This can make Goldens more anxious and unnecessarily cautious over time. They will enthusiastically run into just about any situation before deciding whether it is safe, scary, or appropriate to do so. This works wonderfully if you live an active life and will be taking your Labrador on all your adventures. This is something they are instinctively happy to do! If you have a more reserved and laid-back personality, though, this behavior can be exhausting. Labradors Do Labradors and Golden Retrievers shed the same amount? Both Labradors and Golden Retrievers shed roughly the same amount of hair. Both breeds shed lightly throughout the year and will have a serious shedding season during spring as they lose their very heavy winter undercoat. Both breeds will need to be brushed two to three times a week to prevent their undercoats from becoming matted and compacted, which can quickly become very painful for the dog. Depending on the color of your dog and your decor you may see more or less fur in your home. For instance, my first dog was a black Lab mix and I had black interior in my car. I noticed very little fur in the car but lots of fur at home. Which breed is easier to train, Labradors or Golden Retrievers? Goldens and Labs are both very intelligent dogs, which makes them easy to train. Both breeds are used as working dogs as well as service animals , as they are easy to train and will stick to their training. Can you mix Labradors and Golden Retrievers? Labradors and Golden Retrievers have been bred with one another for decades. A mixture of a Golden and Lab will give you a Goldador! These dogs combine the best of both species into one package. To read more about this hybrid dog, check out my dedicated article on the Golden Retriever Lab mix! A lot of service dog schools are mixing Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers to try and get the best traits of both dogs for the perfect working service dog. They are both very intelligent, energetic, trainable, and love their families fiercely. There are several key differences between the two breeds you can refer to when determining which one better suits your own lifestyle and preferences. To recap, the differences are: Their origins.

Just ask anyone who has lost their heart one of these handsome family dogs, whose breed is known for its loyalty, keen intelligence and gentle disposition. Swansea resident and internationally respected golden retriever breeder Nancy Dallaire fell in love with the confident and trustworthy sporting breed in while searching for a dog for her then 3-year-old twin sons. She soon switched to conformation and has never looked back. The acclaimed breeder shares that her kennel name — Twin Beau D — honors her twin sons, who are now in their mids; Beau Ch. During her many years as a breeder-owner-handler, Dallaire exhibited three different dogs to Best-in-Show wins and has sold adult dogs and puppies to loving homes throughout the United States and as far away as Japan and South America. As an experienced breeder who has evaluated hundreds of litters of goldens and other breeds, Dallaire likes a dog that is balanced, which is achieved when all parts of the canine, whether the dog is moving or standing, produce a harmonious image. Give them two weeks and they settle in right away. They want blondes. After breeding for almost four decades, Dallaire often receives calls from the owners of deceased or elderly Twin Beau D goldens seeking another puppy. Are you the owner of the business? He was very helpful and gave us loads of information for our pup. There was a personalised print out for each pup letting you know key dates and information for them and how to take care of them. We were provided with a months insurance, all the documents from his first jab, and the documents for his microchip of which we have now received the certificate in the post , a big bag of puppy food and we also were able to use the breeders code to obtain free Royal Canin food for the pup too. Want to know the best German Shepherd bathing tips to make your life easier and save money? Use peanut butter. Use a dollop of peanut butter on the side of your tiled wall to convince your German Shepherd to get into the tub. Using peanut butter or another tasty treat they love distracts them from the bath and also motivates them to not only get into the tub but to stay in. Refill the peanut butter as you bathe them to keep them occupied. Pick a natural peanut butter with no artificial sweeteners, as artificial sugars can make your dog seriously ill. Not fond of spreading peanut butter on your wall? Install a long shower hose. Use a long shower hose with at least a 5-foot extension. The shower hose allows you to get close to the skin so you can penetrate the double coat. It also makes rinsing under the belly quicker and easier than using your hands and a cup. The Pet Wand Pro Dog Shower attachment is a quick install tool that offers adjustable pressure for young puppies or dogs that hate water sprays during their baths. Many dogs fear water running out of the faucet, so this helps avoid a scary bath. You can even use this attachment with a garden hose outdoors in warm weather! Ease them in with small stairs. You may have to train them a bit to step onto the stairs and then into the tub. But unless you can lift a full-grown Shepherd weighing upwards of 90 pounds or more by yourself, I suggest a sturdy set of stairs to help your dog get into the tub. These are the steps I use to support a German Shepherd up to pounds! Mix your shampoo with water. Mix your shampoo in a ratio of 1 part shampoo with 2 parts warm water. You could even try a ratio as high as or more! I have an empty plastic squeeze bottle where I squirt my shampoo and then fill with water to the correct amount. Prepare the shampoo mix beforehand. Adjust your solution with more water until you reach the amount of suds and consistency that works best for your dog. Arm yourself with treats. If your German Shepherd needs convincing to stay in the tub, keep a small bag of treats in your pocket. At random intervals offer them a tasty piece of a treat to keep them calm. Some ideas for treats that smell great to dogs are freshly baked chicken and pea-sized pieces of cheese. Rinse, rinse, then rinse again. Always remove soap and shampoo thoroughly by rinsing your German Shepherd. Then, rinse again. When in doubt, rinse even more! Zoom Groom the dirt and dead hair away. A Zoom Groom is inexpensive and dislodges dirt, mud, and debris that gets trapped in guard hairs or their undercoat. As a bonus, use the brush to remove dead hairs when your dog is dry or on puppies since the brush is gentle. The rubber teeth massage them, rather than pull their coats, and decreases shedding by picking up dead hair as it lies on top of their coat. Brush your German Shepherd for at least 10 minutes before giving them their bath. This removes dirt and dead hairs that would otherwise wind up making you work harder to bathe your dog. Your drain will also thank you! Too much hair that makes it down the drain will clog your plumbing. Wondering what brushes and techniques are best for your breed? Read all about brushing your German Shepherd. Keep clogs at bay. Keep your plumbing from clogging by using a drain catcher to pick up all the fur before it winds up down the pipes. Massage in a deshedding conditioner. After bathing and rinsing your German Shepherd, use a deshedding conditioner to add in shine to their coats and moisture to their skin. I prefer to use a natural, deshedding conditioner that helps keep shedding down and adding softness. If you want more tips to decrease shedding, then read more about solutions for German Shepherd shedding. German Shepherds have sensitive skin and your personal shampoo is too stripping and drying. This brand also helps to decrease itching and scratching and leaves your German Shepherd fresh and soft! Prepare and plan. Have all your bathing supplies ready before you even start the bathwater. Place them in an easy to reach area. Easy to keep organized this way! The last thing you want to do is remember you forgot the shampoo or treats when you have a soaking wet GSD in the tub who wants to escape! Prevent the dreaded soaking wet splashing. Your German Shepherd will shake off water frequently, so pull your shower curtains tight! Also, the moment your German Shepherd steps out of the tub and onto the floor, they will shake again immediately. Prepare for their spray of water by draping two large towels over their body and head. This keeps the water under the towels, instead of all over your bathroom and house. While you have them draped in the towels, lead them straight outdoors in warm weather. Leaving your dog wet for too long can increase skin irritations and fungal infections. Thinking of blow-drying your dog with your own hairdryer? The Kennel Club advises against using our own hairdryers on dogs because of the risk of burning them. Their skin also becomes irritated when dried on too hot of heat for too long. Instead, invest in a quality powerful dog grooming dryer. Not only will this reduce your drying time and inhibit fungal infections from ever starting, but it also reduces shedding! Yes, you heard it right: reduce shedding by blowing their dead fur off with a powerful but gentle motor. The high-velocity motor loosens fur that lodges in their undercoat which helps decrease shedding. Start from the neck. Start from the neck and work your way down to wet, shampoo, condition, and rinse your dog. Remove their collar. A wet collar holds smells and can rub against the skin, causing chaffing. Removing the collar before a bath also gives you the chance to inspect the collar for any frays or tears so it remains safe to use. Now is the time for ear cleaning. Bath time is a great time to clean the ears. There are many types of ear cleansers on the market, but all of them make my dog shake her head wildly. Inspect their ears after the bath to wipe away any water. Use your ear cleaner with the directions provided. Use a wide-tooth comb and grooming spray. Plus, the spray adds conditioning to the skin to keep your German Shepherd from scratching after their baths. Use a non-slip mat. Place a rubber mat down at the bottom of your tub to prevent slips. A slippery tub and your wiggly German Shepherd is a disaster for an accident. But a rubber mat provides a surface their feet grip to increase their stability. This mat also gives your dog more confidence and less anxiety during their baths. Keeping your dog safe is your top priority! Clip their nails. This helps prevent scratches to you and gives them more traction to increase their footing in the tub. A home bath gives you the opportunity to bond with your dog and save you money. And these German Shepherd bathing tips keep your dog in tip-top shape. German Shepherd coat care procedures German Shepherds have a beautiful thick coat, requiring regular and thorough care. In the first place, it involves the correct selection of a full-fledged diet and various hygienic procedures. The owner of such a dog should know exactly what and when to do to ensure that the coat of the pet is properly cared for. Often German Shepherds tolerate water procedures and love to bathe if they were accustomed to it from an early age. Later on, an adult kept in an apartment should be bathed with special products two to four times a year: in autumn, spring and summer. In winter, the coat is sometimes cleaned with snow outside. Water procedures performed in winter can cause the dog to fall ill. If there is an urgent need to bathe the pet during this period, the room allocated for bathing should be well prepared and warmed up. If your dog gets dirty on a walk, wash him under the shower or use a wet towel to wipe his coat. If your pet is clearly attracted to water procedures in summer, you can shower him after walks. When keeping a Shepherd Dog in an apartment, you should wash it during the following periods: after shedding; 7 days before the treatment against parasites ticks, fleas, and others ; before the dog shows. If the pet is kept in an aviary, bathing is performed no more than three times a year. Small puppies should not be bathed several days before vaccination and during the day quarantine after vaccination. The first vaccinations are given quite early, at 6 weeks or 2 months of age. Bathing a puppy at 1 or 2 months is still too early. Try to communicate with the puppy calmly and gently, not frighten him with harsh motions. Allow him to settle in by sniffing and looking around in the bathtub. After that, you can start bathing your German Shepherd puppy. What you need for bathing at home Prepare in advance everything you may need for the procedure: First, provide the bottom of the tub with a non-slip surface — a cloth or rubber mat — to prevent your dog from slipping. Wear clothing suitable for this kind of procedure a waterproof apron. Do not use soap on your Shepherd. Prepare a bathing towel. Remember to take your pet for a proper walk outside before bathing. Otherwise, he will want to go for a walk again afterward and may get dirty or catch a cold. Prepare carefully and anticipate everything beforehand. Make sure the water temperature does not exceed degrees Celsius. Using a special shampoo and sponge, thoroughly soap his entire body, including his paws, belly, and neck. Rinse off the foam with your shower. Repeat if necessary. Wrap your puppy in a towel and get him out of the tub. If the coat is still partially wet, let the puppy shake it off and dry himself by running around the house. If the puppy is not afraid of loud noises, try drying the coat with a hairdryer. After bathing, Shepherd fur dries for about 3 hours. Try to bathe your pet in 10 minutes. Exclude the possibility of draughts in the room to avoid the risk of catching a cold. After washing, walks are allowed only after 3 hours. How to bathe a German Shepherd outdoors In the summer heat, you can bathe your German Shepherd puppy in an open pond every day, starting at the age of 4 months. If you take your pet to a river or lake, pay attention to the state of the body of water and the shore before bathing. Are there any sharp objects, shards of glass, or other trash visible? Such precautions will help avoid unwanted injuries and poisoning of your pet. After examining the area, let your dog off the leash and allow him to get acclimated to his new surroundings. German Shepherds are not timid, but each animal has its own personality traits. Swimming in a body of water is good for strengthening muscles and joints. Start by stepping into the water and calling out to your dog. Due to their high degree of trust in their owner, Shepherds are then eager to follow. Allow him to dry naturally, play and run with him. After sickness, it is better to wait about ten days after the pet has recovered before bathing. If the coat falls out or it is dull and broken, it indicates a disease or lack of vitamins in the animal. German Shepherds are divided into long-haired and short-haired according to the fur coat. Their coats need daily brushing. While brushing, dirt, dust, and dander are removed from the coat and skin. At the same time, skin diseases are effectively prevented, and blood circulation and metabolism in the pet are stimulated. The following tools are necessary for taking care of the coat: A frequent brush for the massage effect for long-haired — with long teeth, for short-haired — with short teeth. Metal comb: used to detangle fleece hair. Scrubbing brush: used during the seasonal shedding of the pet and for detangling the tangles. In brushing, it is necessary to release the brush from the clogged hair and dirt periodically. If your pet is calm, you can use a vacuum cleaner with a small brush attachment. After dry brushing, wet-clean the coat with a special mop, then dry the coat with a dry towel, and do not forget to wipe the eyes and ears with a wet cloth. There are special complex procedures designed to care for the fur and skin of animals, the so-called grooming.

Brush Frequently Brushing their coat at least 3 times a week is an absolute must. Longer hair tends to tangle, and curly hair can mat easily. If you leave it too long between brushes, the problems will build, and knots will be that much harder to remove. See Also: Click the image 2. Not only can water tighten knots making them impossible to remove, but matting tends to hold onto both water and shampoo. This can leave skin itchy, flaky, and sore. Use a pin brush or long-tooth comb and pay special attention to areas such as behind the ears and around the tail. This is where tangles tend to accumulate. This can dry their skin and counteract the moisturizing effect of shampoos and conditioners. Instead, give their coat a good rub with a towel and leave it to air dry. Keep Them Groomed Trimming or clipping your Labradoodle can keep them cool in hot weather and make brushing them easier. You will also need to cut any long hair around their eyes to prevent their vision from becoming obstructed. See Also: Click the image 5. Feed Them The Best Hair and skin health begins on the inside. This is as true of dogs as it is of people. Protein is a crucial part of the canine diet, but dogs also need a range of other nutrients and regular access to fresh water. There is no single answer to this question as no two Labradoodles are the same. However, there are a few good rules of thumb. For instance, high-quality, botanical ingredients are less likely to cause irritation than chemicals often found in bottom-of-the-market shampoos. We have chosen Cowboy Magic Rosewater Shampoo as the best overall shampoo because of its versatility. Unless your Doodle has any particular coat care needs, this should suit them nicely. How Often Should a Labradoodle be Bathed? Most Labradoodle experts say that you should only bathe them every six to eight weeks as over-bathing can harm the quality of their coat. That being said, if your pooch has been out rolling in something nasty, you should give them a good clean before they tramp the smell through your house. How often you bathe your Doodle will also depend on the type of shampoo you have. However, products that target specific issues are likely to contain stronger chemical ingredients and should be used more sparingly. However, be extremely careful about using human shampoo on canines as they are made to suit different skin types. Humans have about twice as many layers of skin compared to our four-legged friends. Plus, human skin sits around 5. That being said, baby shampoos tend to be more pH-balanced and are perfectly fine for dogs. Are Labradoodles High Maintenance? Labradoodles might be considered a high maintenance breed. Of course, coats vary, and some can be a little more challenging than others. However, if you find a shampoo that suits your pet and stick to a regular grooming routine, you will likely have very few issues. One area that needs a little more attention with these dogs is their fun, floppy ears. They can easily trap both dirt and moisture, making them the perfect breeding ground for infection-causing bacteria. You want something that will keep them looking and smelling great while helping to maintain the health of their skin and coat. What is your go-to shampoo for your Doodle? One might be easier than the other depending on temperament and size of the Labradoodle Use warm water instead. Avoid hot or cold water. Most dogs like water that is a bit warmer than room temperature. Pick good quality dog foods to keep the coat healthy look for Omega-3 in particular. This breed is prone to mats, which can be a problem when wet. Once the dog is clean, remove them from the bathtub and bring them to a cleanroom. Why Is Bathing Important for Labradoodles? Bathing your Labradoodles is important for several reasons. First, it helps them stay healthy and clean. Secondly, it prevents bad odor from their coat. Regular bathing is an important part of grooming. It can also prevent the development of skin problems. And finally, regular bathing can save your dog from a lot of discomforts. Labradoodles should always be bathed as often as they need to be. Unlike short-haired dogs, Labradoodles have thick curly hair that can be more difficult to clean. You can also save money by bathing your labradoodle at home. All you need to do is invest in the right dog shampoo. You can even bathe your Labradoodle at the groomer. The long ears of a Labradoodle can cause ear infections. Bathing helps to clean all the dirt and debris from their ears, thereby keeping them healthy. This is why your Labradoodle needs to be bathed every so often. How to Choose the Best Shampoo for Labradoodles? The right shampoo can make all the difference when it comes to the health and appearance of your Labradoodle. Here are some factors you need to consider to choose the best shampoo. Ingredients: The first thing to consider when buying a shampoo for your Labradoodle is the type of ingredients. Shampoo Type: Choosing the right shampoo for your Labradoodle is not difficult. There are several different types of shampoo for Labradoodles. A good one is pH-balanced to be gentle on the skin while also being tough on dirt. One of the best ways to get the cleanest coat possible for your Labradoodle is to use a gentle, natural dog shampoo. If your dog is prone to allergies, try a hypoallergenic, pH-balanced shampoo. Coat Type: Before choosing a shampoo for your Labradoodle, you should consider the coat type. Each variety of coats requires different cleaning techniques. For example, some Labradoodles have a curly, coarse coat, while others have a finer, thinner, straighter coat. Safety: One of the most important things to remember when choosing a shampoo for your Labradoodle is safety. It is important to keep the pH level in a healthy range. When buying a shampoo for your Labradoodle, you should look for one that is suitable for sensitive skin. It is important to choose a product that will not irritate the sensitive skin of your dog. If your dog has any medical condition like allergies, dry skin, dandruff, or sensitive skin, choose an antifungal or antibacterial medicated shampoo. You can also opt for shedding control shampoo. Age of Dog: The age of your labradoodle should be taken into consideration when choosing a shampoo. If you have a puppy, make sure you use a shampoo that is specially developed for puppies. The shampoo should be tear-free as well. If you are thinking of getting a Labradoodle, you may be wondering how often you should bathe it. This breed is known for its large ears, which can easily become infected. Normally you need to bathe them after every 4 to 6 weeks. Most people take their Labradoodles to professional groomers for bathing. However, you can bathe them at home as well. If your dog has a long coat and tends to get dirty, you need to bathe them every month. Can I use human shampoo for bathing my Labradoodle? There are certain precautions you need to take when bathing your dog. If the dog is allergic, you need to use a special dog shampoo. While you can use an all-natural shampoo, it is highly recommended that you use a dog shampoo for bathing your doodle. Instead of using shampoo, you need to use a washcloth and clean their face. However, if the face is really dirty, you can use a tear-free shampoo for bathing. Apply a small amount to the dirty area and use a toothbrush to make lather. After that, you can wipe it with a washcloth and then rinse it with water. However, you still need to bathe them from time to time to prevent bad odor and keep their coat free from dander. You can invest in a shampoo and bathe them on your own. To help you make the right buying decision, we have reviewed the best shampoo for Labradoodles. This medicated shampoo works especially well for Labradoodles with skin that is very dry to the point of flaking. The shampoo has also been enriched with oatmeal to soothe the skin and relieve any itchiness the Labradoodle may be suffering from. Things to consider before choosing a Shampoo for Labradoodles No artificial ingredients When it comes to pet products, it is always a better idea to go for shampoos that are made up of all-natural ingredients. This is a fool-proof way to ensure your dog does not get any major reactions to the product and their coat stays healthy. Use shampoos made up of ingredients a dog would naturally encounter in the wild so that you do not have to worry about any side effects. Low in oil-based components If there are too many oil-based ingredients in the shampoo you use for your Labradoodle, you may end up with a smelly pup even after bath time. This may lead to your pup feeling weighed down by a heavy coat, which ends up being rather counterproductive. Steer especially clear of any drying ingredients since Labradoodles are generally prone to developing dry skin. If it is stripped of moisture even further, the skin may start flaking. This will lead to your Labradoodle scratching and potentially breaking and exposing its skin to infections. Do not get shampoos with ingredients like parabens since these are highly damaging. While humans have a pH of around 5 when it comes to their skin, a dog has a pH of around 7. Otherwise, adverse reactions may occur. It will only cause damage to their coat and skin. Labradoodles, thanks to their Poodle parent, are largely odorless pups. This usually means they do not need to be bathed too frequently. Labradoodles have dry skin, which may become further stripped of oils due to the interaction with cleaning products and water. This may lead to irritation and skin infections. Keep the bathing to a maximum of twice a month. What supplements should I give my Labradoodle for a healthy coat? If your pup has a balanced diet consisting of natural ingredients, you do not need to worry about supplements. Make sure the dog food your Labradoodle is consuming has a fair amount of Omega-3 fatty acids, which can be found in fish and animal fat. This helps keep their skin and coat healthy and glossy. How often should I groom my Labradoodle? On average, the Labradoodle is very easy to maintain. You can expect to give your pup a good brushing every week or so to keep their coats healthy and tangle-free. If you feel as though their coat is getting too long, you can schedule a trim. This is an awesome product from one of the most respected brands in the industry, they produce quality shampoos, from cosmetic grade ingredients, and sell them at a very reasonable price point. The bulk of the cleaning power comes from the coconut extract base that combines with natural essential oils and other deodorizing compounds. The high-quality nature of the ingredients in this product ensures that it creates a thick luxurious lather despite the lack of soap — which is something other lower quality products struggle with. We really liked the scented infusions in this product that make it one of the best soothing shampoos on the market. This product honestly does everything a good Labradoodle shampoo should do, and more. Unless you have some very specific reason to try something else, this should be at the very top of your shortlist. Like the product above, this is an all natural product that contains no soap, alcohol, or chemicals in its formula whatsoever. The amount of effort 4-Legger put into its natural company ethos is quite honestly impressive. We absolutely love the cleaning power that this product provides. The zesty fresh material is antibacterial and antifungal — which means the stench causing bacteria the currently live on your pooch are going to have a very, very bad time. As an added bonus, lemongrass has a small yet significant amount of pest repellent capability inherently inside of it. This is probably a better product than our overall recommendation slightly , but there is one small issue, the price. The lather it generates is luxurious and the light fresh scent it leaves behind is pleasant too. Similarly, the delicate skin of your young Labradoodle will be nourished and protected by the various high-quality compounds inside the shampoo. The real reason we like this product is the tearless nature of the formula. This will make bath time an even more unpleasant experience for them than it usually already is — which is obviously less than ideal. The aloe vera infusion in the conditioner is generous and will leave your pooch with healthy, well-protected skin. Earthbath is a reputable brand and has a reputation for creating organic quality on the same level as 4-Legger that we chose as our runner up in the section above. However, the cleaning power it provides is more than acceptable with oat flour in its ingredient list, and the conditioner is surprisingly effective too thanks to the honey extract in the formula. The tangling and matting that is a fact of life for Labradoodles becomes much harder to remove after it has been in contact with water. Removing the tangling by grooming before bathing eliminates this issue, and it makes the post bathing grooming session quicker and easier too. Lather Them Well The thick curly hair of your Labradoodle is very dense compared to some other breeds. Run The Bath Before Calling Them In Labradoodles often get anxious around bath time, and anything that you can do to make the experience a little less stressful for them will be appreciated by your pooch. One of the worst parts about bathing for a dog is sitting around waiting for the process to start. The best way to do this is to run the bath before you call them in and make sure you have everything nearby that you need to complete the bathing session. Then you simply call them, pick them up, and put them in the tub to get on with the job. How a reasonably small dog like the this can shed so much hair in the tub while remaining cuddly and fluffy is almost magic. As you already know, hair is one of the worst things in the world for plumbing blockages, so you need to catch as much of it as you can before it makes it down the drain. Get a piece of steel wool and place it in the plug hole before you start bathing your dog. The steel wool will trap any hair it comes into contact with easily, which leaves your plumbing fully protected from your pooch. Follow the hints and tips above, and you and your pooch are going to enjoy grooming and bathing a whole lot more. We put a huge amount of effort into the product recommendations we made earlier, and we honestly think that they represent the best Labradoodle shampoos on the market in .Any of them are more than worthy of your consideration, they beat off some stiff competition to be mentioned here today and they are all winners in our eyes. Firstly, what coat type does your Labradoodle have? Hair coat types are the straightest and usually the highest shedding. Wool coats have tight curls and can tangle easily. And fleece coats fall somewhere in between. Secondly, you must consider the age of your Labradoodle. Puppy coats are very different to adult dog coats! And so, their needs will usually be different too. Puppies often need a shampoo that is very gentle on their skin, and will need to be introduced to bathing slowly with positive reinforcement. How often should I bathe my Labradoodle? How often you should bathe a dog depends on their coat type. Labradoodles typically need bathing approximately once a month, or whenever they are dirty. In fact, many dogs can get away with a few baths a year, but not the Doodle! Ask somebody you trust to keep them still and comfort them while you wet their fur using some warm water. Gently massage it into their skin and let it to sit for 5 to 10 minutes. Then, rinse it away with more warm water and repeat if necessary. Towel dry the excess water from their coat and let them air dry, or use a hairdryer on a cool setting if they are okay with it. If you have a rescue Doodle, focus on building your trust with them before you attempt a bath. Should you bathe a Doodle puppy? You can start bathing your Labradoodle pup when they are around three months old. When bathing your puppy for the first time, introduce the concept gradually. Get the water ready and make it fun by splashing around or playing in it with a toy, and then bathe a paw or two to show them how it works. What if my Doodle hates baths? If your Labradoodle hates being bathed or does not like water, consider using a waterless shampoo instead, or at least incorporating it into your routine to increase the time between baths. Try to make them a positive experience by going very slowly. Shampoo and rinse each section of their coat separately and reward them as you go. Make it fun by splashing the water around and turning it into a fun game. Are Labradoodles allergic to shampoo? Any dog can have an allergy, but Labradoodles are especially prone to suffering from allergies. Symptoms of a reaction may include swollen eyes, runny eyes and nose, red skin, and skin irritation. If your dog reacts to any grooming product in this way, stop using it immediately and make a note of the ingredients to avoid them in the future. Should I use conditioner on my Labradoodle? Matting can cause pain, discomfort, and even infection. They can also conceal other skin problems. Can I use human shampoo on my Doodle? So, using your shampoo on your Doodle, especially on a regular basis, could completely disrupt their pH levels, make their fur dry and brittle, and irritate their skin. Can you bathe your Doodle too much? You can over-bathe your Doodle. Although they need regular grooming, bathing them more than what is recommended can strip the coat of its natural oils and damage the coat and skin, leaving it dry, irritated, and brittle.

images of golden labrador puppies - He is from the litter of Madison and Boscoe. He's now just over 13 weeks old and we love him more everyday! He started puppy school on Saturday and I was so proud. We received so many compliments about how handsome he is. He loves every person and dog that he meets. If we could all learn to greet others the way a boxer puppy does, this would be a much happier world! I will continue to send updates and I thought you'd get a kick out of the picture. Thank you once again for allowing us to adopt this amazing boy - I can't imagine my life without him! Well in a nutshell he's just amazing!! He graduated puppy classes on Sunday and he was the most well behaved boy there! He's always into mischief but he's so sweet that we couldn't be happier. No one believes he's just a puppy! Sarah and Alex Hi there, My name is Alex and my wife Sarah and I bought one of your puppies over 11 years ago from a litter whose parents were Boscoe and Annie. There "little" boy Apollo is starting to slow down but still quite healthy. His nickname is big mouth. We go to the dog park about 4 times a week. He loves playing running with all the other dogs there. His best pal is a 2 yr old female german short haired pointer. Hope all is well there. Tahnks again for a sweet dog. Cheers, Dawn Hi it is bonnie from thunder bay i am trying to send you some pics of RUBY - these were taken shortly after we got her; more to come - my computer picture software has been on the fritz since april - more to come next few emails she is absolutely wonder ful. Let's talk about our sweet boy Henry.Let's keep this momentum going!!! If you don't know Henry's story, Let's talk about him. He's a 4yo male boxer who was hit by a car in Ohio and left for dead. The shelter picked him up, and he waited alone for five long days for his family to come get him. They never came. A complete stranger saw the shelter's story about Henry online and wanted to help. This good Samaritan, despite knowing they couldn't keep Henry long-term, picked him up from the shelter and took him home and began to arrange medical care, while at the same time starting a search for others who could help find Henry a forever home. That's where MNBR comes in. One of our members saw Henry's story and connected us, and we stepped in to help secure a foster and ongoing medical attention for this good boy. Henry's original prognosis was that his injuries were catastrophic. He would need to have one of his legs amputated, plus additional surgeries to address what appeared to be major spine damage as well as damage to two of his other legs and hips. The situation seemed dire. But as it turns out, our boy Henry is a fighter!!! Despite his situation, he was in good spirits and started to show improvements in his legs, so the team decided to move forward with finding a treatment path for him. An MRI and assessment revealed that Henry's injuries, while extensive, were operable, and the orthopedic surgeon believed that they could save all Henry's limbs! Since then, Henry has had several therapies, including new water therapy, and he is healing! Henry is a sweet boy who is the definition of a champ! Henry arrived in Minnesota finally in January, since then he has been being seen at the University of Minnesota Veterinary medical clinic. But we are not getting too excited his care is not over quite yet. And he will also need follow up appointments from the surgery he just endured, bandage changes, etc. Donations are tax deductible. My name is Mechanic, but don't be fooled--I can't hold a wrench and I ride in cars, I don't work on them. But WAIT! While I might not be a real mechanic, I sure can do a tune-up on your heart! Sadly, I haven't been able to get into a foster home just yet, but listen to what these building volunteers have to say about me and see if your heart doesn't start to purr like a fully-restored '79 Corvette. He walks right by your side, not a puller and doesn't react to cars when they go by. He's also dog friendly! He knows how to shake with both paws. He will jump up only if you ask. He has whole body wiggles in typical boxer fashion. He walks so amazing. He's overall so gentle for how big he is. He's a snuggler and loves humans. Potential to be a Velcro dog. Has good leans when you hit the right spot for scritches" "He's so sweet. All he wants to do is cuddle. He walks perfectly without being distracted by other dogs or vehicles, he does like to observe all around him, but super chill. He takes treats so gently at times I wondered if he actually took them. He's a perfect love bug" To view additional dogs available for adoption, please see our website: www. Your dog is special! The modern Boxer was developed in Germany during the 19th century from mastiff type dogs, and was originally used to hunt large game and in fighting or baiting. The Boxer is a high-energy dog with an enthusiastic and animated nature. They are a friendly and high-spirited breed that loves to play with children. Some Boxers can be stubborn but most are eager and quick to learn. Boxers enjoy close human contact and demand to be the center of attention with their clownish antics. The Boxer is a generally healthy breed with an average lifespan of years. That is why we have summarized the health concerns we will be discussing with you over the life of your Boxer. By knowing about health concerns specific to Boxers, we can tailor a preventive health plan to watch for and hopefully prevent some predictable risks. That does not mean your dog will have these problems; it just means that she is more at risk than other dogs. We will describe the most common issues seen in Boxers to give you an idea of what may come up in her future. This guide contains general health information important to all canines as well as the most important genetic predispositions for Boxers. At the end of the booklet, we have also included a description of what you can do at home to keep your Boxer looking and feeling her best. And unfortunately, your Boxer is more likely than other dogs to have problems with her teeth. It starts with tartar build-up on the teeth and progresses to infection of the gums and roots of the teeth. Infections Boxers are susceptible to bacterial and viral infections — the same ones that all dogs can get — such as parvo, rabies, and distemper. Many of these infections are preventable through vaccination, which we will recommend based on the diseases we see in our area, her age, and other factors. Obesity Obesity can be a significant health problem in Boxers. It is a serious disease that may cause or worsen joint problems, metabolic and digestive disorders, back pain and heart disease. Instead, give her a hug, brush her fur or teeth, play a game with her, or perhaps take her for a walk. Roundworm egg as seen under the microscope. Everything from fleas and ticks to ear mites can infest her skin and ears. Hookworms, roundworms, heartworms, and whipworms can get into her system in a number of ways: drinking unclean water, walking on contaminated soil, or being bitten by an infected mosquito. Some of these parasites can be transmitted to you or a family member and are a serious concern for everyone. Spay or Neuter One of the best things you can do for your Boxer is to have her spayed neutered for males. In females, this means we surgically remove the ovaries and usually the uterus, and in males, it means we surgically remove the testicles. Spaying or neutering decreases the likelihood of certain types of cancers and eliminates the possibility of your pet becoming pregnant or fathering unwanted puppies. Performing this surgery also gives us a chance, while your pet is under anesthesia, to identify and address some of the diseases your dog is likely to develop. For example, if your pet needs hip X-rays or a puppy tooth extracted, this would be a good time. This is convenient for you and easy for your friend. Routine blood testing prior to surgery also helps us to identify and take precautions for common problems that increase anesthetic or surgical risk. Genetic Predispositions for Boxers Heart Disease Boxers are prone to multiple types of heart disease, which can occur both early and later in life. Veterinary dental care and weight control go a long way in preventing heart disease. Boxers are especially prone to a life-threatening heart condition known as dilated cardiomyopathy, or DCM, in which the heart becomes so large, thin, and weak that it can no longer effectively pump blood to the body. As this problem advances, he may act weak or tired, faint or collapse, breathe in a labored way, or cough. This means your Boxer is more at risk than other breeds. When a dog bloats, the stomach twists on itself and fills with gas. The twisting cuts off blood supply to the stomach, and sometimes the spleen. Left untreated, the disease is quickly fatal, sometimes in as little as 30 minutes. Your dog may retch or heave but little or nothing comes out , act restless, have an enlarged abdomen, or lie in a prayer position front feet down, rear end up. Preventive surgery in which the stomach is tacked down or sutured in place so that it is unlikely to twist is an option. If you see symptoms, take your pet to an emergency hospital immediately! This is a common problem in dogs, and your Boxer is more likely than other dogs to be affected. The condition usually develops slowly, and the early signs are easily missed. Symptoms include drinking and urinating more than normal, increased appetite and reduced activity level. Later, a potbelly, thin skin, and hair loss are characteristic. Treatment usually includes oral medications, and requires close coordination with us to ensure correct dosing. Bone and Joint Problems A number of different musculoskeletal problems have been reported in Boxers. While it may seem overwhelming, each condition can be diagnosed and treated to prevent undue pain and suffering. The cranial cruciate ligament is one of the four tough bands of tissue that hold each knee together. A torn cranial cruciate ligament is a common injury in active dogs, which includes your Boxer. Usually surgical correction is done to stabilize the knee and help prevent crippling arthritis. Physical therapy and multimodal pain management are necessary to get the best outcome. Keeping him at the right weight, feeding a high-quality diet, and avoiding too much twisting of the knees like playing Frisbee are key in avoiding this painful injury. Neurological Disease A genetically linked neurological condition that could occur in your Boxer causes a wobbly, drunken gait. This condition, known as wobbler disease or wobbler syndrome, happens because there is a narrowing of the vertebrae in the neck, which pinches the spinal cord and associated nerves. If the nerves do not send signals to the brain the way they are supposed to, your dog cannot feel his feet. The first signs you will often notice are unstable hind legs, stumbling, and sometimes falling. Medications, neck braces, rehabilitation exercise programs, and surgery are treatment options. It affects Boxers more frequently than other breeds. If your dog has this disease, he will become increasingly weak and disabled in the hind legs and will eventually suffer from paralysis in his hindquarters, along with incontinence. Rehabilitation, exercise, acupuncture, and dietary supplements can be helpful, but there is no cure. A genetic test is available to determine whether your dog is at risk for this heritable disease. Inflammatory Bowel Disease Inflammatory Bowel Disease or IBD is an immune system disorder common in Boxers in which the intestinal lining becomes overrun with immune system cells called lymphocytes and plasmacytes. Chronic vomiting or diarrhea is common or it may flare up suddenly and then improve again for a time. Stress, diet change, or intestinal parasites may make it worse. If your friend has diarrhea or digestive upsets that are not explained by the more common reasons, diagnostic tests, which may include intestinal biopsy, will be needed. Lifetime medications and special diets are usually required to keep this bellyache under control. Unfortunately, Boxers can inherit or develop a number of different eye conditions, some of which may cause blindness if not treated right away, and most of which can be extremely painful! We will evaluate his eyes at every examination to look for any signs of concern. Multiple Skin Problems Your Boxer is susceptible to different kinds of skin infections and diseases. One of them is caused by yeast Malassezia dermatitis. When it infects the ears, it causes itching, redness, and an accumulation of brown waxy discharge. On the skin, it leads to greasy, hairless areas, especially on the neck and throat, with a characteristic odor. Another common skin disease called seborrhea can cause dry, flaky skin or greasy, oily skin. These diseases make your pet itchy and uncomfortable. The earlier you call to have his skin problems checked, the less likely it is that you will end up caring for an itchy, bald, smelly dog. Bleeding Disorders There are several types of inherited bleeding disorders which occur in dogs. They range in severity from very mild to very severe. Many times a pet seems normal until a serious injury occurs or surgery is performed, and then severe bleeding can result. Abnormal lymphocytes, as seen under the microscope, confirming a diagnosis of lymphoma. Lymphoma Lymphoma or lymphosarcoma is a type of cancer that afflicts Boxers more than other breeds. This disease makes the body form abnormal lymphocytes, which are a type of white blood cell. Because white blood cells can be found throughout the body, this cancer can show up almost anywhere. Lymphoma is a very treatable form of cancer, with an excellent success rate in dogs receiving chemotherapy. Treatment can be costly, however, and is a lifelong commitment. Luckily, lymphoma is one of the few types of cancer that can often be found with a blood test, so we may recommend a complete blood count twice yearly. Bleeding Tumor Hemangiosarcoma is a type of bleeding tumor that affects Boxers at greater than average incidence. These tumors commonly form in the spleen, but can form in other organs as well. Unbeknownst to a pet owner, the tumor breaks open and internal bleeding occurs. Some tumors can be volleyball-sized or larger before signs of sickness show. We often find clues that one of these tumors is present during senior wellness testing, so have his blood tested and an ultrasound performed at least yearly. Mast Cell Tumor Mast cell tumors are a particularly nasty type of skin cancer found more often in Boxers, and the sooner they are surgically removed the better. Trouble is, they often look just like other kinds of skin lumps and lesions, some of which are harmful, and others not. All suspicious lumps should be tested and any questionable lump should be surgically removed as soon as possible. Many cancers are cured by surgically removing them, so early detection and removal is critical. Epilepsy There are three types of seizures in dogs: reactive, secondary, and primary. Secondary seizures are the result of a brain tumor, stroke, or trauma. If no other cause can be found, the disease is called primary, or idiopathic epilepsy. This problem is often an inherited condition, with Boxers commonly afflicted. If your friend is prone to seizures, they will usually begin between six months and three years of age. An initial diagnostic workup may help find the cause. Lifelong medication is usually necessary to help keep seizures under control, with periodic blood testing required to monitor side effects and effectiveness. Note the length of the seizure, and call us or an emergency hospital. Signs can include dry skin and coat, hair loss, susceptibility to other skin diseases, weight gain, fearfulness, aggression, or other behavioral changes. Treatment is usually simple: replacement hormones given in the form of a pill. Acepromazine Sensitivity Acepromazine is a widely used tranquilizer, very often prescribed for travel and other anxiety. For many years this drug was considered to have a wide margin for safety, meaning that vets prescribed it readily for traveling pets and for noise phobias. Recently, however, studies have uncovered some dangerous side effects in a few breeds, notably the Boxer. Respiratory Distress Syndrome This disease, also known as brachycephalic syndrome, affects dogs with a short nose, like your Boxer. As a consequence, the soft palate the soft part at the back of the roof of the mouth , is too long and hangs down into the airway. The nostrils are often too small, and sometimes the trachea, or windpipe, is narrow and undersized. All of these things lead to a narrow and obstructed airway. Many of these dogs can barely breathe! Watch for exercise intolerance, loud breathing, coughing, bluish gums, or fainting. With his short nose, he is also more likely to develop other problems, such as flatulence from excessive air intake, pneumonia from aspirating food, or heat stroke. In severe cases, surgical correction may be recommended. Taking Care of Your Boxer at Home Much of what you can do to keep your dog happy and healthy is common sense, just like it is for people. Be sure to adhere to the schedule of examinations and vaccinations that we recommend for her. Another very important step in caring for your pet is signing up for pet health insurance. There will certainly be medical tests and procedures she will need throughout her life and pet health insurance will help you cover those costs. Routine Care, Diet, and Exercise Build her routine care into your schedule to help your Boxer live longer, stay healthier, and be happier during her lifetime. We cannot overemphasize the importance of a proper diet and exercise routine. Supervise your pet as you would a toddler. Keep doors closed, pick up after yourself, and block off rooms as necessary. She has low grooming needs. Brush her coat as needed, at least weekly. Boxers generally have good teeth, and you can keep them perfect by brushing them at least twice a week! Clean her ears weekly, even as a puppy. She can have a high prey drive, so she needs to be leash walked and a sturdy fence is a must. She can be sensitive to temperature extremes; avoid any prolonged exposure and be very alert to the signs of heat stress. Feed a high-quality diet appropriate for her age. What to Watch For Any abnormal symptom could be a sign of serious disease, or it could just be a minor or temporary problem. The important thing is to be able to tell when to seek veterinary help, and how urgently. Many diseases cause dogs to have a characteristic combination of symptoms, which together can be a clear signal that your Boxer needs help.
