Well, we can start by learning more about its parent breeds. Chihuahua First off, we start with the Chihuahua, the smaller puppy in the equation. Famously known as one of the smallest, if not the smallest dogs in the canine world, Chihuahuas do not let their size bother them. What you get here is a small dog with plenty of character. Despite their size, they have a bold and confident personality. With that in mind, here are the most common personality traits of a Chihuahua puppy: Loyal and affectionate with their owners, they crave attention and want nothing more than to cuddle Despite their size, they have a protective instinct and can and will guard their territory and owners They have excellent hearing, making them perfect watchdogs. We have to mention they are alert and will bark to notify their owners of any potential danger or problem. Sometimes, even the tiniest sound can make them go berserk Temperamental dogs that can snap or growl when they feel uncomfortable or threatened They love to play and can be quite energetic. They are a bundle of joy and energy in a small package Most importantly, Chihuahuas are intelligent and can pick up commands quite easily They are known to have a bit of a stubborn streak Boxer Next on the list is the Boxer parent, the other part of the equation. In the past several years, Boxers have gone up in popularity. And one of the reasons is their unique and cuddly face. But do not forget their personality. You can never know how big it will get. Of course, unless you adopt an adult. Yet, the maximum they can grow up to is 40 lbs. When you look at the parent breeds, they are on different sides of the size spectrum. In some cases, you might end up with a small lap adorable dog, or you can end up with a puppy as big as the Boxer. Be patient with your pet. Use positive reinforcement, and always reward with treats and praise. They do not like toys as much as they like treats and dog food. Exercise Needs The two parents of the Boxachi are high-energy dogs that need plenty of physical exercise. Some mental stimulation will do as well, but they are not some of the smartest dogs that need brain teasers and games all day long. We can tell you that this pooch can be prone to weight gain. For this reason, you want to stay away from meals and treats that are high in unhealthy fats, sugars, processed and artificial ingredients, and other not wholesome foods. They do well with two walks per day along with some additional playtime. There are a few details to keep in mind, however. First, if they are on the bigger side, it is better to have some outdoor space for them to run. You can also take them on jogs, hikes , and other more strenuous activities. On the other hand, if they are on the smaller side of the canine community, you need to be more careful. Luckily, if they are smaller in stature, they can have more playtime indoors. Regardless of size, however, you need to keep them on a leash at all times when outdoors. They can be great escape artists. Other Activities With a smarty on your hands, you will want to give them some brain games to keep them busy. This can be in the form of toys , teaching them tricks, or playing games. This breed also loves to tackle and pounce, so stuffed animals are fun for them along with chew toys to keep that pastime from being taken out on your furniture. First and foremost, they are a quick study, so learning the rules is not an issue. Instead, they can be stubborn, sassy, and independent. You will have to be patient with your pet and keep training sessions quick and fun. As always, positive reinforcement works wonders. Be that as it may, they also need an alpha to follow. At the end of the day, if you are consistent, persistent, and repetitive, your pooch will learn their lessons and be better for it. They are devoted to you, and ultimately want to make you happy and smile. Plus, they like the treat, too. We also wanted to quickly point out here that while all training is important, socialization at a young age is imperative for the Boxachi. You want to start this training from day one if possible while also adding in obedience, behavioral, and housebreaking one step at a time. Thankfully, their nail, ear, and teeth care are pretty basic. You want to brush their teeth as often as possible. You will also need to check their ears twice a week and clean them gently with a cotton swab and canine ear cleaning product. Nails are done as needed typically every four to six weeks. It is their coat fur where things can get confusing, so we are going to break it into two sections. Short Fur If your Choxer has short fur, you will need to brush them weekly to get all excess hair off and keep their coat shiny and healthy. They are not overly big shedders, but you want to keep the excess to a minimum. When it comes to baths, it will depend on whether they take after their Boxer or Chihuahua side. With that being said, it is recommended that you only bath a Boxer when they really need it as it strips their fur of essential oils. We would advise following this dictate for the short-haired Boxachi. Instead, if you need to clean them more often, you can wipe them down with a damp face cloth to remove any dirt or debris. You also want to note that this short-haired pooch does not do well in cold weather. Even if they are on the bigger side, you need to provide them with a sweater in the winter and colder months. Long Fur When your pup has longer fur, it is important to brush them with a pin and slicker brush several times a week. Not only will these keep excess hair from getting all over your furniture and clothes, but it will also keep mats from forming. Unlike the Boxer, experts recommend that you bathe your Chihuahua often. This is also what they advise from a longer-haired Boxachi. This will help keep them clean, and their fur healthy. Also, if your pup is on the smaller side, you will still want to provide them with a sweater in the winter to keep them warm. Bigger dogs may not need to be careful when the temperatures plummet. For that reason, we have listed the serious and most likely problems along with the minor and less-likely issues below. Thankfully, this is a pretty healthy pooch, but regular check-ups are important to make sure they stay that way. Minor Conditions. Despite or perhaps because of their smaller stature, Chihuahuas are frequently chosen in the United States to be companion and family pets for many different types of families. Their relatively low-maintenance coat, calm and aloof demeanour when not excited and moderate exercise requirements make them a good fit for the elderly, as well. The Chihuahua was first bred in Mexico in the 19th century, but has historical lineage that stretches back to the 9th century, when the Aztecs ruled over much of Mexico. There are competing theories as to when the Chihuahua was first crossbred. Some dog historians believe that the Chihuahua is a descendent of the above-mentioned Techichi pup. Others believe that the dog was crossed with another ancient Mayan dog — this one was hairless. If the latter opinion is true, then this may well be the origin of crossbreeding of the Chihuahua. This practice was ended in with the Cruelty Against Animals Act, though Boxers still were used in dog fights. Later, Boxers were introduced into other parts of Europe and at the turn of the 20th century, into the United States. Ever since their introduction at the turn of the 20th century, Boxers have enjoyed a relatively peaceful existence in the United States, in comparison to their English beginnings. Nowadays, Boxers are companion pets, though they have also been used as working dogs in police and military functions. Boxers can be rather energetic small to medium-sized dogs, making them difficult for the elderly to handle and care for. How Did Boxers Come About? Unfortunately, Boxers have a much similar history in the UK to the Pitbull, bred for violence and sport. Boxers are some of the most popular crossbreeds of today, however, their original crossbreeding history is somewhat difficult to determine. They originated in the 19th century in England and were likely crossbred between then and now, though documentation of this is few and far between. Our most accurate information suggests that Boxers were likely crossbred in the United States in the s and early s, as crossbreeding of dogs became more and more popular. For example, an active dog will do much better with an active family. Much of the temperamental questions are fairly common-sense, but a miscalculation could mean that you and your new dog are unhappy and may lead to more trauma for the dog, if it needs to be re-homed again. What is the Temperament of the Chihuahua Boxer Mix? Luckily for most of its owners, the Chihuahua Boxer mix presents a fairly mild temperament. Contrary to its excitable Chihuahua genes, the Boxer brings a calming element. The Chihuahua Boxer may initially be stubborn and resistant to training, though keep at it! He is sweet, silly, snuggly, and ridiculously cute. He is just about everything that is good in a dog. Petey loves to entertain himself and others with his playful attitude and his puppy-like antics. He loves to start each day with a happy morning wiggle dance, and he will perform encores throughout the day. Petey is an affectionate fellow. He only gives occasional kisses, but loves to get close to you; nuzzle you; lean; poke at you with his front feet as boxers do; and when he is feeling silly which is often! He is accustomed to sleeping in bed with a person and snuggling all night. Truthfully, he can get away without it inside the home because he is an easy, good boy to live with! However, he is overly excited out in the world, on walks, in the car, and seeing new people and animals, so he would benefit from some guidance to help him behave calmly in those situations. At this point, meeting people is extremely exciting, but meeting dogs is just too overwhelming for him to handle. Petey had a dramatic entrance into rescue, as he was pulled from the shelter while he was suffering from bloat a medical emergency fatal within hours. Pulling a dog in critical condition, when we know the cost will be tremendous and a good outcome far from guaranteed, requires a leap of faith. The shelter vet bought Petey time by puncturing his stomach to decompress the gas that was building up. Within an hour of first being contacted by the shelter, a flurry of communication had occurred, an NCBR volunteer darted to the shelter, delivered Petey to an emergency vet, and Petey was being prepped for surgery. But we are overjoyed to say that Petey made it through surgery and is now recovering in the hospital. Adult dogs will need to relieve themselves 3 — 5 times a day. This can depend on their activity level and the amount of water they have consumed. Puppies have much smaller bladders and will need to go pee far more often. Between 5 — 8 times a day is fairly common for young puppies. When you find that your dog is being far more frequently, and perhaps having accidents in the home after being potty trained, or just outside, it could be signs of a UTI. Watch them like a hawk - If you are lucky enough to be able to stay home with your Boxer until he or she is house trained, you can use the Umbilical Cord Training Method. If you are away during the day, default to this method any time that you are home and it can be reasonably incorporated. You will simply put a leash on your Boxer and tether the other end to you. You may connect it to your belt loop or around your wrist. The important element is that your Boxer will never be more than 6 feet away from you. With this method, you will take your Boxer puppy outside every 2 hours for a 2 month old, every 3 hours for a 3 month old and so on. The less a pup is allowed an opportunity to have an "accident" inside, the more successful the house training will be done. And we must remember that essentially there are no accidents. When nature calls, a puppy will urinate or eliminate where they are at that moment. Bladder and bowel muscles are not at full strength and the Boxer has little control in regard to holding needs. Therefore, it is the owner's job to make sure that their Boxer is outside in the bathroom area, at the time that the body calls for it. The other method is confinement by crating and is not recommended. For times that you cannot be right with your Boxer puppy , it is best to have him in a gated off area. If the room that you choose has carpeting, it is recommended to obtain a piece of linoleum, that will not be installed, it will simply be placed down. It's a good idea to keep the gate open when you are home, allowing your Boxer to check things out and even play, should he choose. It will allow him to get used to the area for times when you are not home. Do keep in mind that without full control over holding his needs, he must still be taken out at the times mentioned above. When you are not home, pee pads or paper can be placed down; however do not expect your puppy to learn 2 methods of housebreaking. The beneficial element is that it will be confined to one space easy to clean up and as the Boxer grows, he will be able to hold his needs for longer periods of time, with the end result being able to hold on for the 8 hours or so that owners are away for work. Rule 2 You must clearly show your Boxer where you expect him to go to the bathroom. If there are any doubts in your dog's mind about where he is supposed to eliminate this will make for one confused dog. And, it will most likely lead to that dog just giving up and going inside the home. Choose a spot that works well in all weather. What looks like a great location on a warm spring day may not work so great when your older, trained Boxer has to hike thorough a foot of snow to reach it in the winter. The area should be roughly 8 feet in diameter and used for nothing else but bathroom needs. If you want to play with your Boxer or do some outdoor command training , do this after he goes to the bathroom and in a separate location at least 15 feet from the bathroom area. The location that you choose as the main spot for your Boxer to use as a bathroom is vital. A dog will become very confused if you show them a new area each time you bring them outside. Just having the yard or "somewhere outside" is not specific enough and will impede progress. The 1 complaint that owners have in regard to housebreaking their puppy is that he or she urinates or eliminates right after coming back into the house. While this may just be a matter of the dog's body not having the need while outside, most of the time it is because an owner did not give the dog an opportunity to do so. Puppies need to sniff around - stand in the center of the chosen area - and with your Boxer on a 6 foot lead, allow him to sniff away any where within that diameter. As they are sniffing, their body is readying to push out a bowel movement and an owner must allow for enough time to go by for this to happen. The mistake occurs when an owner heads back in with their Boxer, only minutes before the dog is ready and that is when the dog eliminates seemingly right after entering back inside. As digested food moved through the intestinal tract, the puppy clenched bowel muscles in anticipation of being taken out. A pup needs 15 to 20 minutes to find just the "perfect" spot and to relax enough to do the deed. How to Begin Using the above Umbilical Cord Training Method Each time your puppy makes a motion that implies that they are about to eliminate, you must bring your dog outside to a designated area. In some cases, you may need to pick up your puppy and run to that spot - expect to do this several times, as even finishing in the designated bathroom area is preferred to not at all. A dog aims to please their owner; if you make your Boxer feel as if he did something extraordinarily wonderful, he or she will be prone to do it again. This does not need to be done forever. Once a dog performs enough repetitions of a certain action, it becomes habit. However, an occasional "good dog! Block off certain rooms that are not in use and use a gate to keep your Boxer on the level of the home where you are. If "allowed" to have accidents, they will continue to believe that they can go urinate or eliminate inside of the home. Even if you yell "NO! Be sure that it is large enough for the pup to: play, sleep, eat and go to the bathroom. Crating does not work when a dog is left home alone. Canines do not care to go to the bathroom in a confined space, but if left with no other choice, they will.Bring your Boxer out about 20 minutes before you leave. Bring him out as soon as you arrive back home. Don't scold for any messes that occurred while you were gone, it makes no sense to reprimand a dog for a natural bodily function.
