As with most purebreds, French Bulldogs have in-built health issues. This causes some major problems when it comes to giving birth, and special care is needed if you are to avoid the pitfalls and dangers ahead. The mother needs to be given medication to let her body know that her babies have been born, as the natural hormones would not have been released. She may not bite through the birth sacs or the umbilical cords, so you should be prepared to help out here. Special DAP Dog Appeasing Pheremone collars are often used to combat the problem of mother dogs not bonding with their puppies, usually starting several days before the C-section. However, the owner or breeder should be fully prepared to step in and take over the job of caring for these tiny bundles of joy. They will need all the help and love you can give them. Some breeders and owners prefer to allow a natural birth, despite the risks. Being Prepared Preparation is key to the safe and successful delivery of the puppies. It pays to have everything on standby in case the mother begins to whelp before the scheduled C-section appointment. Although the date can be predicted pretty accurately, the time can be out by about 24 hours. However gentle they usually are, they might snap at little hands that get too close. Plastic whelping boxes are lightweight and easier to keep clean than wooden ones, which can harbor parasites and germs. Make sure the box is large enough for the mother to stretch out but small enough to keep her precious puppies close, with easy access for her to get out without the puppies escaping. Any equipment you use should preferably be sterile. Placing a plastic sheet around the whelping area and under the box will help. What To Expect Photo from: ansem. As the hour approaches, she will pant a lot and become restless before lying down, upon which she will begin trembling. Soon after this, she will begin to push. The best sign of the start of labor is a sudden drop in body temperature, from around .Once she starts to push, the first puppy should appear within twenty minutes. If there is no sign of birth after this time, then call for assistance immediately as there is a good chance that puppy number one is stuck. Hopefully, all will be well, and the puppy is born safely. Help momma dog out if she needs it by cleaning and cutting cords. She should lick her babies clean as this will help her bond as the scent causes hormones to be released. The birth process is exhausting for the mother, so help her whenever you can. If at any time she becomes distressed, or things go wrong, call for help immediately, or both she and her Frenchie baby could be at serious risk of death. Clean up the area as much as you can without disturbing them, and leave them to it. But your work, in some senses, has only just begun! Caring For A Newborn French Bulldog Whether whelped at home or delivered by C-section, both mom and her new babies will need your help. One new puppy is a challenge. You might have two, three, or more, plus their tired mom to look after! However, in some cases, the mother may not naturally take to feeding. This can be a problem when the birth has not been natural. If you need to step in, ready-made puppy formula is available, or you may wish to make your own. Allow enough flow to let them feed easily without it overflowing around their mouth and nose. For the first week, they need to be fed every two hours. This can be extended to three or four hours in the second week, especially if they look healthy and are a good size. Potty Training Like any newborn baby, they will look to their mother for guidance, but you will most likely have to lend a hand. They will not poop or pee of their own accord, and mom has to stimulate this action by licking them. After this, you will obviously have to clean them up. Newborn French Bulldog puppies lack the ability to regulate their own body temperature in the first week of their lives. Overheating can be fatal. Check the areas for drafts and plug any gaps where cold air is flowing, but do make sure there is a slightly cooler area for mom and her babies to escape to if they want to. Frenchies, in general, due to their flat face, can be prone to overheating throughout their lives, so you should always keep this in mind. Keep Them Clean Any newspaper that becomes soiled should be replaced as soon as possible, and blankets or sheets should be washed regularly. These precious pups are vulnerable to staph infections and can get sick really quickly. Diarrhea or vomiting are serious problems, leading to dehydration, which can be a killer. If they are feeding naturally from mom, they will be getting the nutrition they need and protection in the form of antibodies to help fight infection. Development They will need to nurse or be fed formula for about three to four weeks before weaning. By this time, they will have changed significantly. When born, and for the first week, they are blind, deaf, and only able to move by wriggling. They will also react to sound even though their ears are just starting to open. By now, they are able to defecate and urinate by themselves, without help. This is a good time to begin things like toilet training. Place a shallow water bowl within reach, and be sure to remove any small objects from the area as they are likely to choke on them! They will be more independent and will play with their siblings, sometimes getting pretty rough. By the sixth week, they should be fully weaned and eating good-quality puppy food. As well as interacting with their siblings and mother, they should be showing interest in humans too. This is the time to book them in for vaccinations. Up to this point, the puppies have been courageously investigating their little world, their natural curiosity overcoming any fears. Now, however, they should start to display caution, especially with new objects or experiences. An eight-week-old French Bulldog puppy should now be fully formed, with deep brown eyes and weighing between 5 and 7 pounds. As loyal, fun, playful, and cute as they can be, this breed faces a host of health issues. They require special care and consideration, and you should only take them on if you are prepared to do what it takes to keep them healthy and give them the love they deserve. This means that they cannot generate their body heat and regulate their body temperature in response to changes in their environment. French Bulldog Puppy To create a warm and cozy environment for your puppy, you can use a heating pad or a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel. Make sure that the heating source is not too hot, as overheating can be just as dangerous as hypothermia. You should also ensure your puppy has enough space to move away from the heat source if they get too warm. Signs of hypothermia in newborn puppies include shivering, lethargy, and a weak pulse, while signs of overheating include panting, restlessness, and excessive drooling. Providing a warm and comfortable environment for your newborn French Bulldog puppy can help ensure their overall health and well-being during their first few weeks. Monitor Their Feeding Newborn French Bulldog puppies require frequent feedings to help them grow and develop properly. They must be fed every two to three hours, including at night. You can use a bottle or a syringe to feed your puppy a special formula for newborn puppies. French Bulldog Puppy When feeding your puppy, ensure that it is in a comfortable position and that its head is slightly elevated. This will help prevent them from inhaling milk, which can lead to respiratory problems. You should also monitor their feeding to ensure that they are getting enough milk and not experiencing any digestive issues, such as vomiting or diarrhea. If your puppy is not feeding well or has diarrhea, contact your veterinarian for advice. They may recommend changing the formula , adjusting the feeding schedule, or other treatments to help your puppy feel better. Provide a Safe and Comfortable Sleeping Space Newborn French Bulldog puppies spend most of their time sleeping, as sleep is essential for their growth and development. Therefore, provide them with a safe and comfortable sleeping space that promotes restful sleep. This helps create a cozy, den-like environment that provides your puppy with a sense of security and comfort. The enclosure should be small enough to make your puppy feel secure but large enough to allow them to stretch out and move around comfortably. Mom and Puppy French Bulldogs Ensure that the sleeping area is free of drafts, as newborn puppies are susceptible to changes in temperature. You can use a heating pad or a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel to provide additional warmth for your puppy. Just ensure that the heating source is not too hot and that your puppy has enough space to move away from the heat if needed. In addition to creating a comfortable sleeping space, establish a regular sleep schedule for your puppy. This can help promote healthy sleep habits and prevent disruptions to their sleep cycle. You can also try to create a bedtime routine that includes quiet playtime or cuddling, which can help your puppy relax and fall asleep more easily. This can be done by washing any bedding or blankets and wiping the enclosure with a mild disinfectant. Keep Them Clean Newborn French Bulldog puppies require frequent cleaning to keep them healthy and comfortable. Puppies at this age cannot yet control their bodily functions, so they will need assistance with cleaning and grooming. This includes cleaning their face, paws, and bottom after each feeding to prevent infections and other health issues. This can help prevent skin irritation and infection. You can use a soft, damp cloth to gently wipe away any food or dirt that may have gotten on their paws. Be sure to dry their paws thoroughly to prevent the growth of bacteria in damp areas. You can use a soft, damp cloth to gently wipe their bottom after each feeding. Be sure to clean in the direction of their fur to prevent skin irritation. In addition to cleaning, grooming your puppy is also important to keep them healthy and comfortable. You can use a soft brush to gently groom their fur , which can help remove any dirt or debris and promote healthy skin and coat. Schedule a Visit to the Vet One of the most critical steps in caring for your newborn French Bulldog puppy is to schedule a visit to the vet soon after they are born. This is essential to ensure your puppy is healthy and free from any health issues needing attention. French Bulldog Puppy Vaccinations are essential for protecting your puppy from diseases that can be life-threatening, such as distemper, parvovirus, and rabies. Puppies are susceptible to internal parasites, such as roundworms and hookworms, which can cause a range of health issues, including diarrhea, weight loss, and poor growth. Your vet will recommend a schedule for deworming to keep your puppy healthy and free from these parasites. For example, they can provide tips on feeding, grooming, and general care to ensure your puppy is healthy and happy. Socialize Them Socialization is an important aspect of puppy care and is particularly important for French Bulldogs. As your puppy grows and develops, expose them to different people, animals, and environments to help them develop into confident, well-adjusted adults. Socialization starts early, and you can begin by inviting friends and family members to visit your puppy at home. This will help your puppy get used to meeting new people and will help them learn that strangers can be friendly and safe. You can also take your puppy on short outings to places like the park, the pet store, or even just for a walk around the neighborhood. These outings will help your puppy become accustomed to new sights, sounds, and smells, which will help them feel more comfortable and confident in different environments. French Bulldog Puppy with Other Puppies When introducing your puppy to new people or animals, do so in a controlled and safe environment. Always supervise your puppy and ensure they are comfortable with the new experience. If your puppy seems frightened or overwhelmed, take a step back and allow them to adjust at their own pace. You can also use treats and positive reinforcement to help your puppy associate new experiences with positive feelings. Introduce your puppy to other dogs in a safe and controlled environment. Puppy socialization classes are a great way to do this, as they provide a safe and structured environment for your puppy to interact with other dogs and learn necessary socialization skills. These classes are typically run by experienced trainers who can help your puppy learn how to play, communicate, and interact with other dogs safely and positively. In addition to socializing your puppy with people and other animals, you must expose them to different environments. This can include various types of flooring, stairs, and even car rides. This will help your puppy become more confident and adaptable, making it easier for them to adjust to new situations as they grow older. Provide Regular Exercise While French Bulldogs are not the most active breed, they still require regular exercise to stay healthy and happy. Exercise can help them maintain a healthy weight, improve their cardiovascular health, and prevent behavior issues from boredom and pent-up energy. As your puppy grows and becomes more mobile, you can incorporate short walks into its daily routine. Start with short, slow-paced walks that gradually increase in length and intensity as your puppy grows. You can also play games with your puppy in the backyard, such as fetch or tug-of-war, to help them burn off excess energy and strengthen their muscles. French Bulldogs are sensitive to heat and can quickly become overheated, leading to serious health problems. So avoid exercising your puppy during the hottest part of the day, and always ensure they have access to plenty of water and shade. In addition to physical exercise, mental stimulation is also vital for French Bulldogs. These intelligent dogs enjoy learning and problem-solving, so you can provide mental stimulation by playing games such as hide-and-seek or teaching your puppy new tricks. Remember that every puppy is different, and their exercise needs will vary depending on their age, health, and activity level. Always consult your veterinarian to determine an appropriate exercise routine for your puppy. While newborn French Bulldog puppies are generally healthy, they are still vulnerable to specific health issues, such as infections, parasites, and congenital defects. They can also advise on vaccinations, deworming, and other preventative care measures. Some common signs of illness in puppies include lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, sneezing, and fever. If you notice any of these symptoms or any other unusual behavior, contact your vet immediately. Newborn puppies are generally quiet and sleepy, but as they grow older, they should become more active and curious. If your puppy is lethargic, unresponsive, or displays unusual behavior, it could indicate an underlying health issue. Train Them Training is essential to raising a well-behaved and obedient dog, and French Bulldogs are no exception. As your puppy grows and develops, you can teach them basic commands such as sit, stay, come, and heel. Training should be a fun and positive experience for you and your puppy. Positive reinforcement techniques such as treats, praise, and playtime effectively teach your puppy new commands and behaviors. Avoid using punishment or physical force, as this can cause your puppy to become fearful or aggressive. Use a clear and consistent verbal cue when teaching your puppy a new command. Your puppy should naturally sit down as it looks up at the treat. Repetition and consistency are vital in reinforcing good behaviors and correcting unwanted behaviors. Keep training sessions short and frequent, and gradually increase the difficulty of the commands as your puppy becomes more confident and skilled. Socialization is also an essential aspect of training for French Bulldogs. Expose your puppy to different people, animals, and environments to help them develop into well-adjusted and confident adults. For example, take your puppy on walks in other neighborhoods, introduce them to friendly dogs, and bring them to pet-friendly events. In addition to basic commands, teach your puppy proper leash etiquette, potty training, and crate training. These skills will not only make your life easier but will also ensure that your puppy is well-behaved and happy. Provide Plenty of Love and Attention French Bulldogs are social animals that crave attention and affection from their human companions. They are known for their affectionate and loyal personalities and thrive on human interaction. As a new puppy owner, dedicate time each day to play, cuddle, and bond with your furry friend. Playing with your puppy is a great way to bond and give them exercise and mental stimulation. French Bulldogs may not require as much training as other breeds but still benefit from regular playtime. Playing fetch, tug-of-war, or hide-and-seek are all fun games you can play with your puppy to keep them engaged and active. French Bulldog Puppy Cuddling with your puppy is also needed. French Bulldogs love to snuggle and enjoy being close to their human companions. Cuddling with your puppy can help reduce their stress levels and promote feelings of happiness and contentment. You can also use cuddling to bond with your puppy while you watch TV or relax at home. In addition to playtime and cuddles, provide your puppy with training and socialization. Exercise helps to establish good behavior and can help prevent future behavior problems. Positive reinforcement techniques such as treats and praise are effective ways to train your puppy and help them learn new commands. Socialization is also vital for French Bulldogs. Early exposure to different people, animals, and environments can help your puppy become more confident and well-adjusted. Take your puppy on short outings to the park or pet store, invite friends and family over to meet your new furry friend, and enroll them in puppy training classes to expose them to new experiences and help them develop social skills. Conclusion In conclusion, taking care of a newborn French Bulldog puppy requires patience, dedication, and a lot of love. By following these tips, you can ensure that your puppy gets the best possible care and has the best chance of growing into a healthy, happy adult. Reasons a French Bulldog puppy might die early on are usually due to difficult whelping, congenital or genetic defects, environmental factors i. However, the following formula is cheaper and provides all the nutrition. Many use it instead of evaporated milk — both can be found in the bakery section of your grocery store. If this seems to be, change to bottled water to make the formula. Keeping the litter box tempature between degrees with no drafts for the first few days is usually adequate. Other sources of warmth can be heating pads or heat lamps. If using a heating pad, monitor the intensity of heat, as pups have been known to cook on pads set on high settings! There are many excellent heat lamps on the market, but remember that caution is needed. Heat lamps have been known to start fires! The temperature on the French Bulldog puppies 1 inch above the bottom of the box should be about degrees with a corner that is slightly cooler and allow them to scoot to wherever they like best. There should also be plenty of clean blankets, as this will allow for regulation of temperature. Hydration is one of the most important things to monitor in new Frenchie pups, as it can be one of the first signs of problems. Check hydration by by pinching the skin on the back of the neck or on the top of the back. If the pinched skin stays creased, the French Bulldog puppy is dehydrated and needs fluid replacement. Dehydration can either be a result of inadequate nourishment, too much heat, or sickness. It is strongly suggested that you use regular newborn or infant bottles and nipples. The ones available for purchase for cats, dogs, ferrets, etc. Bottle feeding is far more preferable. The sucking on a nipple, the handling and holding of the French Bulldog puppy is so very important to their overall development. The French Bulldog puppy should be held with his head upwards and his body and tail down in a 45 to 90 degreee angle when bottle feeding. If French Bulldog puppies and their blankets are not kept clean, it is very easy to come down with a staph infection and diarrhea — which is serious, as Frenchie puppies can go downhill quickly. As mentioned before, it is equally serious if the French Bulldog puppies get chilled so avoid drafts. Even if you have them in a basket with a heating pad, you need to cover the basket with a towel to keep out drafts. A chilled French Bulldog puppy must be warmed up. There are lots of little ways to accomplish it. Priority should be to get the Frenchie puppy warmed up slowly. Newborn French Bulldog puppies cannot regulate their body temperature or body functions like urinating and stools. It is important that they are pottied at each feeding. They might not have a stool each time, but they will urinate. This is what the mother does when she licks them. After that, she will become a good mommy. Some might start off being good, then after a few days, or even a couple of weeks, not want to be bothered and might even be nasty to the puppies such as snapping and biting them. Always be careful and watch. If the mother will not clean the babies, you must be sure to do it. Using a kleenex, gently rub the area to stimulate their potty. Then be sure to clean them well. Make sure to check them even if the mother cleans them. Often the stool will get stuck to the tail and be dry. If that happens, or if the French Bulldog puppy seems to be straining and constipated, try the following: Run warm water in the sink slowly. Put a drop of soap on their behinds, and wash and massage their behinds; it will get the tail and poop unstuck, clean them up, and cause them to potty very well. If the little bottoms are red and sore, use some Desitin ointment. You may see green puppy stools and stools that have an appearance of bunches of tiny seeds. If all else seems normal, this seems to be harmless and short-lived. However, watery diarrhea can be very serious if left unchecked. Diarrhea together with vomiting usually means infection. It should be broken into feedings every 2 hours 5cc per feeding. If it is a good sized Frenchie puppy 1 lb. Towards the end of a week, you should increase the food needed to about cc or more. For the first week they should eat every two hours. If they are good size Frenchie babies, you can sometimes go longer. An average weight for newborn French Bulldog puppies is around ounces. Good size puppies are oz. You bred your Frenchie bitch. You got her through two months of pregnancy. Now you have puppies. The panic sets in. What have you done? What do you do next? Once you get the mother and puppies home, the work is just beginning. Enjoy the brief flush of satisfaction from the accomplishment. There is lots left to do. Is it covered to protect the pups from drafts? Once it is warm, put the newborn puppies inside. Consider this the First Commandment: Keep the puppies warm! For the first few hours, the mother will be weak and disoriented from surgery. If she has lost a lot of blood, she may even be in shock. She needs to be kept comfortable and warm, too. But one warning: Do not leave her alone with the puppies until you are certain she has recovered. Because of the surgery, some mothers have difficulty recognizing that the puppies are theirs. She should be introduced to them gently, and allowed to smell them and lick them. As soon as possible, lay her down in the whelping box which should be warm and protected and put the new puppies on her to feed. Initially, they may have to be coaxed to attach to a nipple. It is extremely important that they get some of the colostrum, the yellowish pre-milk that the mother will secrete at first. It is loaded with antibodies the puppies need to establish their immune systems. The Second Commandment is: Keep the puppies fed. The puppies should be encouraged to feed as often as possible. They should definitely feed once every two hours during the initial days. They will quickly gain strength and seek out the mother on their own once everyone has settled into a routine. Once the mother has recognized her puppies, she should begin to lick them and clean them. This is the Third Commandment: Keep their digestive tracts functioning. If she is not licking them, you will have to substitute. Rather than doing it exactly as she would, the best way is to use cotton balls moistened with warm water. Rub gently underneath to make them urinate, and behind to make them defecate. This should be done following each feeding. Keeping the digestive tract functioning involves the simple rule: put something in, something comes out. If the elimination of waste stops, the puppy will cease feeding, and will quickly start to waste away. If the puppy becomes chilled, the digestive tract almost always shuts down. In every litter, there will be stronger, larger more dominant puppies. They will feed more vigorously, and will tend to push the other puppies away. This becomes a serious problem with a larger litter. If necessary, move any dominant pups to one side to allow the others ample opportunity to feed. During the first twenty-four hours, the mother should not be left unattended with her puppies. She will still be weak and disoriented. She may accidentally lay on a pup or step on it. If she becomes frightened, she might bite or injure one. If you are right there, you can reassure her. You can also intervene if something goes wrong. You will have to be there anyway, as the pups will need to feed the moment your eyelids get heavy. One can get some rest while the other holds vigil. Otherwise, you will learn why it is said that sleep deprivation is the most successful form of torture. The yellowish colostrum will be replaced by pure white. And quantity should increase. You should notice a gradual change in the puppies. From a somewhat wrinkled appearance, they should start to plump up. Their tummies will start to become engorged after each feeding. If the mother is licking and cleaning the puppies, and is allowing them to feed, all is well. You can relax, somewhat. Some mothers take several days to settle into motherhood. If that is the case, clean the puppies regularly to stimulate elimination. As the puppies grow, they will learn to eliminate without stimulus. But if they are not cleaned, their little tails can end up stuck to their behinds. If you are remiss and allow that to happen, you will have to dissolve and dislodge the mess so they can eliminate. And it can set up like epoxy. Use warm water and cotton, and work at it as gently as you can. It may take some time. If the mother is reluctant to clean the pups, hold them up to her to show her what she needs to do. Once shown a messy pup, most mothers will relent and start to lick. Occasionally, the opposite syndrome will occur. A mother will clean too eagerly, resulting in raw, chafed little butts. If the pups are crying inordinately, this is a possible cause. Petroleum jelly for the chafing, or neomycin ointment will help ease the discomfort. Call your vet immediately and have her checked. In the meantime, you will have to bottle feed. Do not allow the pups to go hungry for long. Once they become weak, it will be difficult to get them to feed. There are many recipes around for substitute milk to feed them. Nowadays, a simple expedient is to buy prepared milk substitute for puppies. All you have to do is heat it to the right temperature and use it. The containers have complete directions. Bottles and nipples designed specifically for feeding puppies are available. Using newborn infant bottles and nipples should substitute nicely. If the puppies are older, you may have to widen the opening in the nipple to afford greater flow. As with breast feeding, bottle feeding needs to be done every two to four hours. Make sure each puppy gets enough. If they are not feeding well, give them smaller meals more often. If you have to bottle feed, be very careful. Because of their flat faces, it is easy for the puppies to aspirate milk. That can go one of two ways. When puppies feed too vigorously, milk will come out their nose. Be sure to clear it out completely, as it can cause infection. It can also be aspirated later into the lungs. The greatest risk with bottle feeding is that the puppy will aspirate milk directly into the lungs. If you take your time, and hold the puppy flat enough, this should not occur. If it does, you can tell by the rattling sound as the puppy breathes. Go directly to the vet. This is where a flexible plastic tube is inserted carefully down the throat so that the milk can be placed directly in the stomach. If done improperly, tube feeding puts the milk directly into the lung. Most important in this technique is to have a tube cut to exactly the right length. You need to measure how far the tube needs to go to reach the stomach. Tube feeding is best left to experts. Learning how to tube feed is best done with somebody experienced in the technique. Once the technique is learned, though, it is much faster and more efficient than bottle feeding. It is also the technique of last resort if a puppy is too weak to feed voluntarily. As the puppies grow and feed, they will become stronger and more active. They will more readily seek out the mother themselves. Although their eyes are not open, they can find her by smell and touch sometimes they seem totally lost , and by her body heat. The whole foreface is a complex of sensoria designed to find the mother, determine where a nipple is, and even to detect which is their regular nipple. You can start to relax a little more. If all goes well, the puppies should open their eyes around the tenth day. At first, their eyes will look scary and vacant when they open. Their ability to focus comes later. Frenchies take more time than other breeds to come up onto their rear legs. I have seen greyhound puppies on their feet before their eyes even open! But they should begin to get up on their front legs somewhere around the second week. They need a surface with good traction to get up on. Remnant carpet pieces work well. Slippery surfaces will make it hard for them to strengthen the pelvic muscles that hold the rear legs in position. Infections, viruses, congenital defects can all cause puppies to sicken and die. The mother can step or lay on a puppy and unintentionally cause injury or death. Amazingly, most puppies make it through. Somewhere between four and six weeks of age, the puppies will need to be weaned. If you are slow in starting them on solid food, the mother will let you know. Once the puppies start to develop teeth, her desire to let them feed declines precipitously. There are commercial products available, and most serious breeders have their own recipes for mush to give to puppies. The most important thing to remember is that it needs to be soft enough that they can lap it up at first. One simple alternative is to purchase good quality dry puppy food with a complete array of vitamins and minerals and pulverize it in a blender. Keep thinning it until it is just capable of being poured. Then warm it a microwave oven works well to about body temperature. Thin it a little more once it is warm, as heating will tend to thicken it. For the first attempt, the final product should be thin enough that the puppies can lap it up. Take the mother out while you are giving them the solid food. It may take some effort to coax them to try it. It can also end up looking like a food fight in a Three Stooges comedy. If they try it, good. They will do better the next day. Once you are done, let the mother back in to clean up the remaining food. She should help you with the puppies, but you may have to clean off the messiest of the puppies yourself. Start supplying them water to drink. The solid food will make them thirsty. You should be able to get the puppies to eat the semisolid food in a period of about a week. Once they will accept it readily, you can remove the mother. The puppies will need to be fed around three times a day once they are on their own. Gradually reduce the liquid portion of the food. If they will not accept it, it is too dry. The move to solid food will cause a quantum leap in growth. The puppies should grow less soft and beanbaggy, and should start strengthening up. Their immune systems will need to be built up by the time they are six months old. Talk to your vet to set up an immunization schedule. Suddenly they will look like Frenchies. By this time, you should have strong indications of their personalities, as well. A noisy five-week-old will likely be a vocal adult as well. A loving one or a shy one should correspond similarly. Training can begin somewhere around this stage. It is surprising how much a willing young puppy can learn. Familiarize them with a collar and lead. Teach them proper bathroom etiquette. Make sure that any new owners understand the special care required with bull breeds. They need to know they are indoor-outdoor dogs, and should not be left out at night. New owners should be encouraged to develop a relationship with their vet before any problems occur. Most importantly, let new owners know they can come to you for help if there is any problem with the puppy. You should be able to help them with the simple stuff, and warn them to get to the vet with anything more major. You want the puppies to do well in their new environments. If there was something you were breeding for, did you get it? If there was something you were breeding away from, did you succeed? What other surprise faults and problems came in with the breeding? Once you have done this for half a dozen generations, you should be able to see some trends. Some characteristics will pop up again after a few generations of dormancy. Others will dominate and stay with you no matter what you do. How you handle these characteristics and where you go is all part of what makes you a good breeder. John Niedhamer. French Bulldog Care How to take care of newborn french bulldog puppies? Most, if not all, owners will let their litter grow for about 9 weeks before finding them their forever home. These initial weeks are very crucial as the newborn puppies initially cannot see, hear, regulate their body temperature, defecate nor urinate on their own. Although the mother keeps her babies warm, you should always check to make sure that she does not accidentally suffocate the puppies. Other artificial sources of heat like heat lamps, heating pads, or a space heater may be used but be very careful because the puppies can easily dehydrate and die when overheated. Make sure that the temperature of the whelping box is at a range of 86 to 90 degrees. It is important to check their weight every day and make sure that they are gaining weight daily. If not, you should take a closer look at them to make sure they nurse adequately from their mom or provide them with a supplement like goats milk or prepared formula milk for puppies. Stimulation For Bowel Movement The mothers need to stimulate the puppies for them to urinate and defecate. Some mothers will do this regularly but others may not want to so it is up to you to do it. Use damp cotton balls with warm water or a small dab of petroleum jelly on your finger. Gently wipe this over their genitals until they urinate and defecate, then clean them up. Make sure that the puppies and their whelping box are clean to avoid infection. About Us The exclusive destination for all your luxury accessory needs. Inspired by French Bulldogs, made for all pups. The bat ears, large bright eyes, stubby tail, compact and muscular body, playful nature and remarkably docile demeanour; some of the innumerable qualities that make the French bulldogs an excellent companion animal. Due to their smaller body size, these dogs make good travel companions as well. Additionally, their intelligence and quick adaptability ensure that they are safe to be let about around infants and old members of the family as well. To these statements, I can attest myself for I have a 4 years old female French bulldog — one of the most brilliant dogs that my family has ever had the privilege to own. However, during these past four years, one major concern surfaced itself time and again to my veterinarian parents: Pyometra. Pyometra is defined as an intrauterine accumulation of pus accompanied by a persistent corpus luteum and failure of oestrus. Apparent failure of the endometrial luteolytic factor or endogenous prostaglandin to cause luteolysis makes bitches appear and behave as though they were gestating. Risk factors for pyometra include increasing age, nulliparity, breed, and exogenous oestrogen or progesterone administration. Spaying Ovariohysterectomy completely and promptly removes the infection, prevents uterine rupture and peritonitis, and prevents recurrence, in most cases. Spayed animals do very rarely develop pyometra in the uterine stump. Even so, ovariohysterectomy is currently considered the most effective and safest treatment. It is thus, a very important disease to be aware of for any dog or cat owner because of the sudden nature of the disease and the deadly consequences if left untreated. While it is observed that this condition may occur in any dog regardless of age and mating history, it is more common in bitches that have not whelped even once throughout their life nulliparous. Therefore, after a proper discussion and consultation with scientific literature, we decided to allow our French bulldog to mate with a healthy adult male of the same breed. Little did we know what was in store for us in the next few months to come. Our dog conceived successfully and started showing some symptoms of gestation such as gradual enlargement of abdomen, quick exhaustion, reluctance to run or play, enlargement of mammary glands, etc. However, she lost her appetite abruptly and refused to eat her meals about two weeks into her pregnancy. As her abdomen rapidly grew in size, her appetite reduced alarmingly. To manage the issue, she was given appetite inducers, liver supplements and shifting of meal ingredients from fish, to egg, to chicken, to pork alternatively, in an attempt to spark her interest. She ate almost nothing. There was gradual loss of condition as her abdomen distended significantly. At merely 30 days of gestation, her general appearance was of a bitch at full term. A general abdominal ultrasound was conducted on the 40th day of gestation and roughly 7 puppies were observed even though the number could be greater since unlike X-ray, the number of foetuses cannot accurately be determined using ultrasonography and we were unwilling to conduct radiography due to radiation hazard. She instead preferred to sit close to walls and furniture and lean for support, thus keeping her thorax elevated than her abdomen to reduce pressure on her diaphragm while breathing. There were a couple of concerns we were ailed with. Since French bulldogs are known to have a narrow pelvic girdle and foetal head size is typically large, normal parturition could lead to lodgement of the head of the foetus in her birth canal leading to dystocia. This is why being a veterinary surgeon; I had made all preparations for a caesarean section. Additionally, on an average, French bulldogs have no more than 5 puppies per litter but in the case of my dog Paris, her litter size appeared considerably larger upon ultrasonography, which could be correlated with her abnormally distended abdomen. On the 58th day of gestation, she displayed vivid signs of labour such as nesting, restlessness, panting and straining. We were alarmed due to her pre-term parturition since there were still days of pregnancy remaining. At pm in the winter evening she delivered her first puppy via normal parturition without incident and continued to deliver 8 more over the next 7 hours and delivered a total of 9 puppies of which one was still-born. It was severely cold and raining outside. She displayed admirable maternal instinct and licked away the foetal membranes from all the puppies enabling them to breathe and stimulated them by licking their faces and bodies until the pups let out their first cries. The puppies were cleaned and stimulated further by rubbing gently with sterile absorbant cotton. Unlike most other breeds of dogs, Paris readily allowed us to handle and care for her pups, trusting us completely to keep them safe. On the first two nights, the puppies were allowed to remain with the mother however; we lost another pup as a result of crushing injury inflicted due to her lack of experience. It was then decided to undertake human intervention so as to ensure the safety of the remaining 7 puppies and avoid such accidents in the future. On the 4th night however, the mother managed to get into the basket housing her puppies, reached in with her mouth and carried out one puppy then took her to her bed. The puppy was licked thoroughly by the mother and was only discovered approximately 4 hours after the incident. By then the puppy was hypothermic and dehydrated. Due to severe dehydration and subsequent hypoglycaemia, she was very weak, unable to suckle milk and twitched in frequent intervals. Intensive care was initiated immediately and the puppy was separated from the rest, kept constantly warm at 39 degrees Celsius, fed artificial milk in intervals of 1 hour. However, not much improvement could be observed. After repeating the procedure thrice, she visibly regained strength and began suckling on the finger showing intent. I continued to feed her the milk replacer at 1 hour intervals and 0. This is an essential step since most puppies at neonatal stage are unable to void faeces and urine independently and require stimulation from the mother by licking or artificially using soaked cotton balls. In the case of Paris, she would tend to lick using excessive pressure perhaps due to her overwhelming maternal instinct, which is why we had to deter her from doing so and took charge of the issue ourselves. From the 4th week, feeding was repeated at 4 hour intervals and subsequently increased to 6 hours at the age of 6 weeks. They are currently 12 weeks old and in the past couple of months, I have put my theoretical knowledge on neonatal care of puppies into practical application. General status of health could be assessed by observing faecal consistency and frequency. Neonates void yellow or brown semi-solid faeces with a seedy appearance at intervals of 2 to 3 hours. Faeces solidify gradually and take the form of small boli in healthy puppies without gastrointestinal ailments and having sufficient hydration. Anaemia was assessed by colour and dryness of the oral mucous membranes, dehydration could be assessed by pulling the skin on the back using thumb and index finger as well as the colour of urine. Healthy puppies void clear, colourless to slightly yellow urine, and dehydrated puppies have dark yellow urine voided in scanty quantities. The first two weeks are very crucial since the puppies were prone to hypothermia and hypoglycaemia if optimal room temperature and feeding schedule is not carefully maintained. Methylcellulose eye drops were instilled at 6 hour intervals for one week to prevent corneal desiccation. The mother resumed feed consumption the morning after her delivery. Her diet was supplemented with multi-mineral and multivitamin syrup Multistar Pet and calcium chew tablets Drools to help her regain optimal health as well as to sustain the high nutritional requirements during lactation. All puppies were vaccinated with Puppy-DP Distemper and Parvovirus at 30 days age considering the facts that Paris missed her vaccination during her pregnancy and a Parvoviral infection was on-going as an epidemic in the city. Additionally, the puppies were kept under complete isolation and I had to place myself under home-isolation since I would encounter multiple Parvo and Distemper cases at my workplace. It is with great pride that I can say that all seven puppies have shown remarkable growth and development, are healthy, happy and playful. A healthy female French Bulldog Paris , 4 Year age. Give it some baths here and there but not too many or it will dry out the skin , and brush its coat every other month to avoid excessive shedding around the house. Give your Corgi German Shepherd Mix at least one hour of physical activity every day. This can be long walks, hikes, and swimming. Corgis and Golden Retrievers have a natural attraction to water, so it should be safe to play with their mix in the pool. Many pet owners are now switching to the Raw Food Diet to prevent obesity, increase energy levels, and maintain a healthier dog overall. Just be cautious of the bacteria that live in raw meat. It can make humans and animals sick. The pricing of this breed is all over the board, but hopefully, this will help. Do I have the time to properly socialize this dog? Do I have the money if a medical issue arises? Do I have the energy to keep up with an active dog? If you answered yes, then this breed might be perfect for you! About Alexandra Animalso I was raised to be a dog person. My first Shepherd grew up as I did and wanted to be where I was at all times. I got my second dog as a 16th birthday present, and her loyalty for me was just as strong as my first. I hope that my contribution to Animalso will help others find dogs who give them that same unconditional love. Leave a Reply Your email address will not be published. This characteristic will make the training easier compared to other breeds. You should get your treats ready for them because they will more willingly grant your requests. If you are looking for a pet which is loving to the family members, the Corgi Golden Retriever mix could be the one for your family. This trait encompasses loyalty and friendliness to all the members of the family. Despite the risk of its parent breed Corgi in acquiring various diseases, this designer breed has a decreased risk of developing fatal illnesses. With the mixed gene pool from the purebred dogs, the chances of having health problems become significantly lower. Appearance, Personality, and Traits of a Golden Retriever Corgi Weight 30 lbs to 70 lbs Height 10 inches to 1 foot and 6 inches tall at the shoulders Coat Type Short and straight, medium-length, often thick, wavy Coat Color combination of different shades of brown and red, black, white Amount of Shedding Temperament Intelligent, playful, high-energy, affectionate to family Because this puppy is a result of cross-breeding, the appearance may result in different features. Between the two types of Corgi, there is no significant difference in their sizes. Regarding the weight of Cardigans and Pembrokes, the males of the two kinds are often heavier than the females. The weight of male Corgi dogs ranges from 30 pounds to 38 pounds, while the weight of female Corgi dogs ranges from 25 pounds to 34 pounds. Additionally, Cardigans have a broader chest and more powerful body than the Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Other differentiating features between the two types of Corgi are the tail and overall shape of the bodies. Pembrokes have docked tails, while Cardigans possess a wide and low-set tail. The body of Pembroke is less elongated than Cardigans and curvier. Cardigans have a distinct waistline and elegant back of its trunk. They also have strong front legs, quite bent outward for supporting its heavy chest. Cardigans and Pembrokes also differ in the face structure and facial expression. The head of Pembrokes exhibits a fox-like appearance. Cardigans can have a hint of blue in their eyes, which is not present in Pembrokes. Corgi dogs have a similar characteristic coat. They have medium-length fur and thick, weather-resistant double coat. The different color combination of their coat is also similar to one another, such as red, tan, fawn, and white. Their body coat often lies flat. The females weigh from 55 pounds to 65 pounds, and the males of this breed weigh from 65 pounds to 75 pounds. The height of this breed is 21 inches to 24 inches. Golden Retrievers have a thick double coat that adds to its bulky appearance of this breed. The distinct color of its coat may be yellow, golden, or blond. Its coat is often dense, but some may have a straight or wavy coat. It has a characteristic long snout. Its eyes can evoke sweet emotions and it has a smile that brings warmth to people. The Golden Retriever Corgi mix puppies will be a combination of these aforementioned features. They weigh 30 pounds to 70 pounds. Their height may range from 10 inches to 1 foot and 6 inches. Due to the double-coat feature of both parent breeds, this mixed puppy has a predictable double coat as well. They may have coats that are short and straight, medium-length, or wavy. With the notable coat shedding of the parent breeds, this mixed breed has a moderate to heavy shedding. The colors of their coat can be a combination of white, black, and different shades of brown and red. Corgi Golden Retriever mix puppies can tolerate moderately to excellently varying temperatures. For the Corgi variations, they may have a varying temperament. Below are some of the differences in their temperament. Cardigans are more wary of strangers, making them better watchdogs. Pembrokes view a new person as a potential playmate. Cardigans are more cautious before acting on a situation. Pembrokes are often more open and out-going. Corgi dogs are part of the herding group. Dogs in this category have an innate to mobilize and control the movement of other animals, and sometimes they can gently herd family members, particularly the children. They usually respond well to training exercises, and they make wonderful companions. On the other hand, Golden Retrievers are truly affectionate to people. They have a calm nature and a drive to please their owners. They keep their loyalty to their owners for a long time. They get along well with children. Golden Retriever dogs are part of the sporting group. Dogs in this category are enjoyable, well-rounded companions. They are alert and naturally active. They have superior instincts in woods and water. Mixing these two purebred dogs, the temperament of the offspring can be a combination of these traits. Both of the parent breeds are intelligent, making the training process easier. They catch onto things, such as commands, easier than some dog breeds. When interacting with people, Corgi mixed with Golden Retriever puppies are affectionate and loving. They long for adequate interaction and play. They cuddle the family members as a sign of their affection. Also, they have an innate loyalty for their owners. Pet Stores Professional Breeders Rescue Shelters Among the four options, my colleagues and I highly advise buying from professional breeders. These people take good care of the dogs by providing high-quality food and conducive living environment, and they prevent inbreeding to guarantee minimal health problems. Reliable breeders can provide you with results of health clearances and genetic testing for the parent dogs and offspring, as well as records of vaccination and other pertinent documents. The pet store is probably the most accessible place to purchase a puppy. However, you should consider that most puppies in pet stores come from puppy mills. The puppy mill, a breeding site, is a place where they keep dogs in miserable conditions. In this place, the puppy mill owners force the dogs to breed and give birth. However, before buying from professional breeders, you can also consider visiting your local shelters to check if there is an available Golden Retriever mixed with Corgi puppy and if you are qualified to adopt it. There are also rescue-centers that are breed-specific and non-profit. You can find more information about such institutions on the Internet and consult with veterinarians. Aside from the aesthetic purpose of grooming, you should know that there are a lot more reasons to groom your puppy. Developing a more intimate relationship Bringing out the natural oil on the coat Avoid issues like bug infestations Maintaining the cleanliness and physical health Checking anomalies and possible health problems Here is a list of the tools and equipment you will need for grooming this pup: Metal, Medium-toothed and Fine-toothed Comb Slicker Brush Cotton Ball Nail Clipper The grooming process starts with combing. First, you will use a metal and medium-toothed comb to go over the coat, one section at a time. Then, you will comb the coat with a fine-toothed comb to eliminate ticks and fleas. You should take extra time to comb in spots where tangles occur frequently, such as the base of the ears. If your dog has a collar, remove it when brushing the coat, and do not leave out the neck area unkempt. The use of a slicker brush over a pin brush is advisable due to its purpose of untangling mats or knots in the fur. Also, it helps in removing debris and loose hair. It can run through the thick layers of the double coat and facilitate effective grooming. Another advantage of this brush is its massaging quality since it has long pins. Massaging the skin of your pup will stimulate the production of essential oils for moisturizing the coat. Also, this will increase the blood circulation and promote health for the dog. Daily grooming starts when the coat of puppy starts to blow or when the puppy starts to shed the undercoat. The next step is bathing your pup, especially when it is smelly and dirty. Some people proceed to trim the coat of the puppy before bathing it. It is your discretion if you will follow the steps to the dot. After lathering with shampoo and then rinsing the coat, you can opt to blow-dry the coat. The frequency of bathing will also depend on your decision, based on the smell and sanitary condition of the Corgi Golden Retriever mix puppy. Part of the grooming process is checking for wax buildup in the ears and signs of an ear infection. You can clean their ears with a cotton ball and a dog-specific ear solution. You should never use a cotton swab for their ears. If you do not have this much time in your hands, you should schedule appointments with reliable groomers around the city or your neighborhood. Corgi Golden Retriever Mix Health Problems This designer breed has a lower chance of contracting and acquiring fatal diseases. Although, you should know that genetics typically have a random selection of inherited traits. Therefore, you should be aware of the possible health problems from each parent breed. One acquired condition due to the environment is heat stroke. Since the Corgi Golden Retriever breed has a dense and double coat, they do not tolerate heat as much as they tolerate cold weather. You should protect your puppy from overexposure to the sun and keep it well hydrated. One of the possible health problems is hip or elbow dysplasia. Hip dysplasia is an inheritable disease wherein the thighbone does not attach properly with the hip joint. Elbow dysplasia involves joint laxity due to different growth rates of the bones of the elbow. Cataract is another health condition that may affect your puppy. Puppies with this condition could have prolonged bleeding during heat cycles, bleeding gums, and nosebleeds. Vaccinations are weapons against fatal diseases. There is a generally accepted guideline of puppy vaccination. Some of the recommended vaccinations are measles, rabies, and DHPP which is the combination of vaccines for hepatitis, parainfluenza, distemper, adenovirus, and parvovirus. By knowing the possible serious health issues of this mixed pup, you can be more watchful when your pup manifests some warning signs related to these possible conditions. The Corgi origin of this mixed pup will incline your pup to eat and may influence it to over-eat. You must take precautions to prevent over-eating. I advise feeding your puppy high-quality dry food divided into two meals, instead of letting a massive amount of food sit out on the food bowl. To check if your puppy is overweight, you may conduct the hands-on test and eye test. To do these test, you will stand next to the dog and look down at the dog, looking at the waist. You will place your hand on its back, with the thumbs along its spine and fingers placed downward. If the dog is overweight, you would not feel the ribs when you press down. To help your Golden Corgi prevent bone disorders during peak growth of four to seven months, I suggest you give a low-calorie diet for the puppy. Aside from the food bits, you must remember to provide clean and fresh water for your Corgi Golden Retriever puppy. Check out our list of best dry dog food for small dogs or best large breed dry dog food and see if any suits their needs, but make sure you consult your vet first! It is imperative that you provide them with lots of mental and physical stimulation. Their parent breeds are fond of water. I recommend the following activities for your Corgi Crossed with Golden Retriever puppy: Swimming Race-walking Fetching a Frisbee or tennis ball The duration of physical activity should be at least 30 minutes to 1 hour. A well-exercised dog will cause fewer troubles at home. For mental stimulation, you should give them food-dispensing toys. When you engage the puppy in training classes, you also expose the puppy for socialization, and you allow it to learn the right and wrong habits. During training, it is possible to encounter mischief and fluctuations in concentration. A way to prevent this situation is keeping the sessions short. To have efficient training sessions, you need to have consistency, positive reinforcement, and treat-based reward system. You need to refrain from giving harsh corrections to your Corgi Golden Retriever pup, because this mixed puppy tends to be highly sensitive. Corgi Retriever And Families Because they can be aggressive towards strangers, attributable to its Cardigan origin, you should initiate early socialization. This step will allow the puppy to be more accommodating to strangers or family friends. Aside from helping the pup to be familiar with having people around, early socialization allows the pup to get used to its surroundings and to avoid being overwhelmed by various sensory stimulation. To start early socialization, you will introduce the puppy to new sounds, smells, and sights. This step is crucial in acclimatizing with the surroundings. When doing this step, I advise that you give an appropriate amount of treats. Golden Retriever Corgi mix puppies are family-friendly and affectionate. You can count on their loyalty to your family. There should be adult supervision when the dog interacts with a child. As with any mixed breed, they can take on the traits of one of the parent breeds or any combination of both of them. With a Golden Retriever Mix, the goal is to get the highly-trainable, super-friendly, and sweet nature of the Golden Retriever and the best traits of the other dog in the cross. Because there can be variation in the puppies, you will want to ask the breeder about the other dog in the cross. This will give you an idea of what other traits you could be dealing with in a Golden Retriever Mix puppy. A Golden Retriever is known as the quintessential friendly dog with a happy-go-lucky personality. They get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. They also tend to be good with strangers as they are more interested in making friends. The other dog breed in the cross could provide some other traits and variations to this, but your Golden Retriever Mix puppy should have a similar disposition to the Golden Retriever. Golden Retriever Mixes tend to be highly adaptable dogs. They thrive in larger homes with room to run and can adapt well to apartment living. As long as they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and affection, they tend to be quite happy wherever they live. Golden Retrievers do well in most climates and are sensitive to heat, as with most dog breeds. Your Golden Retriever Mix should be about the same. A mixed breed can take on potential health concerns related to one, both, or neither of the parent breeds. Overall, a Golden Retriever Mix should be a relatively healthy dog breed. Reputable breeders will screen their stock to avoid passing on genetic conditions to puppies. You can also ask to see any relevant health clearances or test results. Golden Retrievers are famously easy to train, which makes them a great fit for owners of all experience levels. Depending on the other parent breed, there may be a chance that your Golden Retriever Mix could have an independent or stubborn streak. In this case, you will want to be prepared for puppy training and obedience classes in case you want a little help in dealing with stubbornness. Classes are a great idea either way because they help strengthen the bond you have with your puppy and are also a great opportunity to socialize your puppy. Golden Retrievers tend to have a medium-length coat that sheds moderately year-round and requires brushing a few times a week. Bathing is usually on an as-needed basis. This may be the same for your Golden Retriever Mix or their coat could require more or less grooming depending on the other parent breed. Monthly nail trimming is usually sufficient to keep them from growing too long. Weekly ear checks and careful cleaning as needed can help prevent ear infections. Golden Retrievers are high-energy dogs. Your Golden Retriever Mix will likely be the same. Even if the other parent breed is a low or moderate-energy dog, you will need to be prepared to deal with a high-energy dog. Daily walks, playtime, plus extra activity are a must for dogs with a lot of energy. Be prepared to try a lot of different activities to find your favorites. Teach your dog to play frisbee , go for a swim, go running together, try taking a few hikes, go on trips to the dog park, and more. A Golden Retriever is a medium-sized dog breed that stands inches tall and weighs pounds. Your Golden Retriever Mix could be the same or they could take after the other parent breed. Make sure you talk to the breeder about the other breed in the mix and meet the mother dog. This can give you a good idea of what size to expect as your Golden Retriever Mix puppy grows. Golden Retrievers generally live years. Unless the life span of the other parent breed varies largely from this range, you should be able to expect something similar from your Golden Retriever Mix. With their signature bat ears and expressive eyes, French Bulldogs, or "Frenchies" as they are lovingly known, have captured the hearts of many dog lovers around the globe, consistently ranking among the most popular breeds. Renowned for their easy maintenance and the ability to thrive in apartment living, French Bulldogs are a city dweller's delight. Their small size, typically weighing under 28 pounds, makes them perfectly suited to compact urban spaces. However, their charming personalities and heartwarming companionship are universally loved, irrespective of city or countryside living. This breed's laid-back nature does not mean they're devoid of fun and play. On the contrary, French Bulldogs can be quite playful and are known for their often comical and entertaining antics, which only further endears them to their owners. Their affectionate demeanor, combined with a remarkably low barking tendency, makes them a joy to have around the house. French Bulldogs are sturdy, compact, and stocky, with a powerful muscular build that contradicts their small size. They have a smooth coat that comes in a variety of colors, from fawn and brindle to white and grey. Their facial expressions are human-like, and they're known to "talk" using a complex system of yawns, yips, and gargles. However, owning a French Bulldog does come with responsibilities. Their brachycephalic short-nosed nature makes them prone to certain health issues and less tolerant of extreme temperatures. Despite their muscular appearance, they are not the best swimmers, and care should be taken around bodies of water.

I finished retriever bootcamp and finally got to come home in late April .I sure was glad to be home and play in the waterfall again! May Now begins the real fun -- I get to train with my human dad and start running Hunt Tests! November After getting my HRCH title this summer, Dad decided that I should go south for the winter so that I can get in some advanced water work and get ready to start running Master tests in the Spring. Kirk has a real way about him with goldens, and a lot of Mom and Dad's golden friends have dogs in his kennel. All I know is that if I get to swim and get birds every day, it will be a great place to be!!! May I've had a lot of fun with Kirk over the last few months, and don't know what the big deal is, but Mom and Dad are doing a happy dance because I just passed my 6th Master test and got my Master Hunter title MH. I dunno, but if there are a lot of birds at this Maryland place, I'm ready.Mom and Dad were happy when my name was called out and they got a ribbon, but I don't know what the big deal is.None of us know why our people get so excited over those things, but they do. Now if they would hand out birds instead, I could relate! October I am finally home from my extended road trip to Texas and then Maryland where I ran and passed my first Master National. Wow there were a LOT of dogs at that test -- entries, and 54 of those were other goldens. We ran 5 series over the course of a week, and at the end, I was 1 of 17 goldens who qualified and received a ribbon and a plate, and I was also the youngest golden to pass. I don't know why Mom cried, but I tried to comfort her. Four of my buddies on Kirk's truck also got passes, but I dunno if their people were as happy as mine! Please follow my hunt test progress on the News page!

Conclusion Getting Prepared The labradoodle varies widely in hair type and color , so the colors used will vary too. It might be helpful to gather several colors to choose from before starting. Pick different shades of brown, red, green, and neutral tones, such as cream. Also, pick a black color for outlining and adding depth. Step 1 The first step is to draw some basic guidelines for the body. Start by drawing a circle for the head, then connect a rounded bean shape to the circle for the body. Space the eyes and draw the head. Step 2 Now draw the eyes. They should be higher up on the head and somewhat far apart. Sketch them in a sideways teardrop shape with short hair arranged around the eyes and toward the side of the head. The eyes should be somewhat dark with small pupils. Step 3 Continue with the nose. Draw the fur on the snout by starting with short hairs on the top and then gradually making them longer as they flow down the sides. Also, draw the strands of hair into a point. The nose should be symmetrical — but not the snout hair! A tongue out pose allows a splash of color. Step 4 Time to move on to the mouth. The mouth will be open, so start by drawing the tongue from the edge of the fur by the snout. The tongue should be covering most of the teeth with a bump on each side. Then draw a thin bottom lip below the tongue. Next, draw thick medium-length hair surrounding the mouth and jaw area. Step 5 Shape the head by drawing the fur between the middle of the eyes and flowing up and out to the sides of the face, getting longer the further away from the face. Ears longer than the snout — for Labradoodles and Cockapoos. Step 6 Draw the ears now and have them flopping behind slightly like he is running. Step 7 Draw a collar with a tag for a little extra personality. For the collar, draw a half-circle around the neck, add the little ring, and attach a tag. The tag can be a standard oval, or you can personalize it and make it any shape you want. This drawing is based on a photograph on my Labradoodle Max Step 8 Now move on to the body. Start with the front right leg by drawing straight lines from the body, with the paw slightly facing the viewer. Step 9 Draw the left leg now by going out towards the viewer and then drawing the paw drooping down. You will not see the paw because the fur will cover it. Details like toys or collars can add a splash of color. Step 10 Move on to the back and chest now. Connect the legs by a line with hair that will be the chest. Now, draw lines extending from the neck and the left leg outwards. That will be the back. Add fur to contour the body. Step 11 Draw the left hind leg connecting from the back and left front paw, angled toward the viewer and straight. There should be no detail on the paw as the fur will also cover it. Practice drawing wavy hair, it is a mainstay of Doodle dog drawing. Step 12 Only a tiny section of the right hind leg will be visible. Draw it out from the middle of the left back leg and have it curved down and around until it connects slightly higher up from the left hind paw. Add fur. Step 13 Now for the tail! Draw it out from the back and slightly to the side of the body to add movement to the picture. The tail should be covered in long strands of hair that appear to blow in the wind. Lots of brown… use lighter colors to highlight even if your own Labradoodle has a coat that is not light. Use black paint around the inner ears, mouth, nose, neck, chest, and right front paw. It will add shadows to the painting and give it more depth and realness. Step 15 Paint the rest of the drawing in your preferred labradoodle colors! Allow to dry completely before hanging up or framing. Our step-by-step guide on how to draw a Labradoodle! About Labradoodles The labradoodle is a cross between a labrador retriever and a poodle. It is a very intelligent and friendly dog. These adorable pups are affectionate, loyal, and playful. The perfect kind of dog to bring to life through art! The labradoodle coat ranges from four to six inches of straight to loose curls. Their color also varies widely and can come in several shades, from chocolate to cream to red. Most labradoodles have dark hazel to brown eye color. The colors you choose will be up to you. You can look at images of labradoodles for inspiration or if you have one for a pet, use them as your muse. Conclusion This easy step-by-step guide can make anyone a beginner artist, but most importantly, it will give you the information you need to create a work of art for your favorite furry friend! You can even make this activity into a fun night with friends and see who can come up with the best creation. Labradoodles can potentially have one of several different fur types. For starters, the color of their fur can be anything, from black, to white, to brown, or anything in between. Their fur can be short and fluffy, long and straight, or coarse and wirey. Labradoodles are hybrid animals, bread from standard Poodles and Labradors. They were bread as allergen-free guide dogs, and over time they became great family dogs. Here is a Poodle and a Labrador. Combine them and you get a Labradoodle! Step 3. Labradoodle puppies are adorable! Their fur is not very long when they are young, but it lengthens as they grow. The closely resemble Labrador puppies at this early age, but with wavy fur. Step 4. Here's a quick demonstration on how to draw their paws. First sketch in some basic guide lines. The figure on the far left will be the underside of the paw, the middle figure is the side of the front paw, and the figure on the right is the side of the hind paw. As you can see, the front paws of a dog have a large pad on the bottom with 4 smaller pads as toes. Each pad has a claw sticking out of the top. There is also a dew claw on the side of the paw and an additional pad on the back of the leg. The hind legs do not have dew claws of the fifth pad. Labradoodles have a lot of lengthy fur which tends to cover up parts of the pads and claws. From certain angles, you cannot see the pads or paws at all because of the excessive fur. Step 7. To draw a Labradoodle, we should first sketch in some basic guide lines. Use a 2H or harder pencil and draw very lightly so that the lines are easy to erase after we ink. Draw a circle for the head connected to a bean shape for the body. The dog will be running in our general direction. Start with the eyes. They should rest a little high on the head and be far apart. At this time, they will appear almost too far apart, but they will look more proportionate later on. The eyes should be teardrop shaped, but sideways. They should be very dark and surrounded by thin hair that comb around the eyes and towards the sides of the face. Next, draw the snout and nose. The nose is the shape of a bloated upside-down triangle. It has two small nostril opening and a thin slit in the middle. The fur on the snout should be short on the top and longer on the sides. It should be blowing in the wind somewhat and the strands should cluster together into points. Draw the lower jaw and mouth. The mouth should be open so the chin should hang well below the circular guide line. The tongue should be hanging out slightly, covering most of the teeth. Keep in mind that the lower canine teeth will cause the tongue to rise up as it falls on top of them, creating humps on either side of the end of the tongue. There should be a thin lip along the edge of the mouth. The fur of the lower jaw should be thick, but not too long. Now draw the shape of the head. Notice how the fur starts in the middle of the eyes and combs back evenly in all directions. The fur gets longer as it get further away from the face. Step .The ears should be large and flapping in the wind as the dog runs. Be sure to draw the underside of the ears, but since there is so much long hair on the ears, we should not be able to see details of the inner ears. To give more character to the illustration, give the dog a collar and tag. We should only be able to see a small portion of the collar at this angle, but it should wrap around the neck creating a partial circle shape. The dog tag can be any shape you wish, be it a bone, fire hydrant, oval, or in this case a circle. It should be attached to the collar by a metal ring. Let's move down to the body. Draw the right leg very straight and pointing towards us slightly. We should be able to see the pads of the foot as the dog takes a step forward. The fur on the legs should be pointing downwards and be thinner on the back of the leg. Don't forget to draw the tips of the claws sticking through the fur a little bit. The left leg should be bent upwards and the paw should be dangling down. The top of the paw will be covered with hair so that we cannot see and details of the paw. Next, draw the back and chest of the dog. The back should have plenty of hair strands combed over one another, but we should only be able to see a small portion of the dog's chest since the left leg is raised so high. The fur on the chest should loosely hang down. Also draw lots of strands of hair on the side of the dog's body that are blown back in the wind. The left hind leg should be very straight and pointing towards us as it is planted firmly in the ground. It should be almost parallel to the front right leg. Again, the paw will be covered in fur and we won't be able to see details. The upper portion of the leg should be hidden from view behind the left front leg. We should only be able to see a small portion of the right hind leg. The paw and lower half of the leg should be visible behind the left hind leg. The paw should be higher up than the left paw at this angle. Finally, draw the end of the tail behind the dog. It can be pointing in pretty much any direction you wish, since dog tails move freely as they run. Just be sure to draw it covered with many long strands of hair that blow in the wind. We can now ink our image! Use either a brush and ink or Micron markers. A brush works best since you can feather the fur and easily create fine tips that gradually get thicker as they near the body of the dog. Be patient and be careful not to erase any unneeded guide lines. When the ink has dried, erase the pencil marks with a kneaded eraser. You can add a greater sense of depth to the image by giving it a little shadow. Our dog is light colored, so don't add too many heavy shadows. Again, a brush works great for feathering the dark to light. Add shadow to the underside of the ears, the side of the nose, the inside of the mouth, the underside of the head, and underneath the chest. Also black out the pads of the paws. And that's pretty much it! If you need to make corrections, you can use white ink or opaque white paint. You can also use it to add more highlights to the fur if needed. That's how you draw a Labradoodle! Good job!

There are also a lot of scammers out there. Poorly bred puppies from non health tested parents are being sold for vastly inflated prices and non existent puppies are being sold to unsuspecting purchasers based on photos lifted from good breeders' websites. Current Covid guidance permits a buyer to collect a puppy from a breeder provided social distancing is maintained. Do not agree to meet at a service station or supermarket car park to collect a puppy. This is a common arrangement suggested by puppy farmers. We are grateful to Ruth Turner for permission to share this advice. Labradors must be at least 8 weeks old when they leave the breeder; 2. Puppies must be registered with the Kennel Club - there is no viable reason why not! Deposits should only be paid if the puppies are born and should be a reasonable proportion of the total cost. Be wary of non refundable deposits. You must see the mum with the puppies, but not necessarily see the dad. Make sure the breeder is giving you a puppy pack, which contains information about rearing your puppy and also a contract of sale, there are guidelines for this on the Kennel Club website; 9. Most breeders will want to meet you and your family before confirming a booking. If because of current circumstances the breeder does not wish you to come into their home, please ask to see video footage of the pups with mum and their surroundings, preferably in real time. Try and buy from an Assured Breeder, this will ensure the parents are health tested and the property has been visited and approved by a Kennel Club Assessor, but remember not being an Assured Breeder does not mean the breeder is not a good one. Recommendation is always a good indicator of a good breeder too. Beware of some online puppy selling adverts especially on sites such as Gumtree, local Facebook groups, and other similar sites. Her knowledge has been invaluable to me, and encouraged me to undertake a Diploma course on puppy care! All the puppies on both of my visits prior to collecting Charlie were all obviously very happy and well cared for. I know that Maria will be at the end of the phone to give any advice as needed, although the hand over pack was very detailed. Some lovely momentos were given too such as his first collar and favourite toy. I highly recommend Gillhambrook Labradors M Seymour Maria has so much knowledge and is very supportive and helpful with adopting new puppies!! We are so excited and grateful to Maria for giving us a new family member.K Botley Maria has advised us on all aspects of introducing our puppy into our home. She has been brilliant from the start, keeping us updated with pictures and videos G Best When we decided to get a puppy, we wanted to buy from a local breeder who genuinely wanted the best for mum and puppies. And preferably with the added benefit of a cat in her home! With Maria we found exactly that. She has been wonderful throughout, providing weekly updates and photos of the puppies leading u to getting ours. A thorough hand over with one month insurance, puppy food to get us started and a health check and vaccination and microchip from her registered Vet. She also made herself available to answer any questions we had since getting our little girl. Interested in Gillhambrook Labradors? Susan Bon-Webb has been breeding since .This breeder raises champion line AKC Pugs. Their Pugs are their babies. That means each pup becomes family and each new owner is super important. Susan is always available to help or answer questions at any time and whenever needed. They love their dogs and show commitment to the betterment of the breed in everything they do. But how can you spot reputable breeders when you start searching for a Pug puppy? Here are some tips to help you out. A good breeder will… 1. Issue a health guarantee Make sure that your breeder of choice offers a health guarantee. A reputable Pug breeder will write up a binding health guarantee for all of their puppies. The guarantee protects you against any genetic defects or diseases. It shows that the breeder is confident that their puppies are bred according to best practices. This means if you can no longer look after your pup for some reason, you will be expected to return the puppy to the breeder rather than taking them to a shelter. Provide standard health clearances Your breeder should have full health clearances for both parent Pugs. Good breeders often provide some early health-check clearances for their pups too, although some health clearances simply cannot be carried on such young pups. Issue a written bill of sale Reputable breeders offer written bills of sale to all of their new Pug parents. This bill of sale should be signed and will outline all the roles and responsibilities to be taken on by the buyer and seller as part of the transaction. Vaccinate their puppies All puppies should be up to date on their vaccinations before being homed with new families. Your breeder of choice should be able to provide evidence of these vaccinations. Reputable breeders welcome prospective parents into their homes to see the puppies. Follow age guidelines Puppies should never leave the litter before 8 weeks of age. Any breeder offering pups for adoption before this time is not following best practices. In fact, this could be quite damaging for the puppy developmentally. A reputable breeder will keep their pups at home until eight to twelve weeks so that they can be properly socialized and spend that crucial time with their mother and litter-mates. Answer your questions Last, but not least, a reputable breeder will be knowledgeable. In most cases, they will also want to ask you plenty of questions to ensure that their precious pups are going to good homes. We have a strict selection process that takes a variety of factors into account. That way we can ensure that only the best breeders end up on our lists. This way we know that our chosen breeders offer genetically sound and healthy puppies. Health testing shows a commitment to the health and wellbeing of each Pug. Contact information Any breeder that does not offer up their contact information is a big red flag. A reputable breeder will make it easy for you to get in contact with them by providing telephone numbers, email addresses, and they will usually have a well-established website as well. It shows a commitment to breeding best practices. Event participation Breeders who also compete in doggie events are often some of the best. Because these people tend to be dog lovers par excellence. They live and breathe for their Pugs and are proud to show them off in public. They are also more likely to have a high level of breed knowledge — an excellent sign for a breeder. Breed club membership There are lots of breed clubs out there that breeders can register with. These clubs have rules, regulations, and membership fees. If your breeder is registered with the Pug Dog Club of America, this is a great sign showing commitment to the Pug breed. Recognition awards Lastly, we look out for awards! Institutions like the AKC recognize the efforts and achievements of top breeders. The very best will be awarded the AKC recognition of merit award. During this time we recommend getting everything ready before your new arrival rattles through the front door. Your puppy will need: a crate for sleeping and training during the early days quality puppy-grade food a leash and harness plenty of toys You may also wish to purchase a puppy gate if there are areas of your home that you want to keep your Pug away from. This is all about making your home as safe as possible for your new arrival. Make sure anything that could potentially cause harm to your pup is removed. Clear your schedule Having a Pug puppy is a bit like having a human baby. So make sure to clear your schedule and get all of those errands done ahead of time! Once they arrive… 4. Avoid crowds Hold your excitement. That means no crowds. Try to keep the home environment as stress-free as possible so that your puppy can settle in and start to feel part of the family. Crate training is the first step. Lay down a regular routine from the get to and your Pug will be good as gold in no time. Pug puppies for sale AKC registered They have had their first shots. Like all things in life, breeding for health is simply a matter of priority. We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other breeders from improving the health of the English Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. We believe a full personality along with a little stubbornness is the true North star of the bulldog breed and is what makes the unique among other breeds. We look for these personality traits in our adult bulldogs and continue to create bloodlines that reflect these qualities. What are the steps of your adoption process if I am located in Ohio? I am familiar with common and uncommon health problems they may face so when my boyfriend and I decided we were ready to adopt our own english puppy finding a reputable breeder that prioritizes health was most important to us. Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. It may no longer be relevant Dash the 2 year old English Bulldog was unfortunately surrendered over to the staff at East Holmes Veterinary Clinic due to bladder stones. Being partnered with East Holmes vet clinic in re-homing dogs in need — they quickly got into contact with us as it was apparent he needed to have surgery immediately. We raced down to Berlin, Ohio and picked up the poor boy. We transported him to our veterinarians at West Park Animal Hospital where he underwent his first surgery. The stones were removed and he went into a foster home with Friendship board member, Amy Richards, and her husband. While he was recovering from his surgery, they noticed he was still having trouble going using the bathroom… A week later, it was back to the doctors. This time they sent him home with antibiotics for a possible urinary tract infection. Things did not seem to be improving despite the treatment. In fact, things seemed to be getting worse! We all agreed that it was time for him to see a specialist. We took him to Metropolitan as an emergency patient. It turns out we were all in for a shock at what this poor dog was enduring. Dash had probably been living with bladder stones for so long that they had completely scarred his urethra. It was at the point where a catheter could not pass through from all the scar tissue. His bladder had swelled to the size of a grapefruit due to his inability to relieve himself. There was only one choice — a very drastic surgery to bypass the scar tissue. They made a completely new urine passage for him so he could finally use the bathroom like a normal dog. It is truly incredible! Dash was now able to go to the bathroom on his own! He seemed like a whole new dog that was comfortable for the first time in years. A flip had switched and he was happy, playful and running around! After months of recovering from both surgeries, his foster family could not let him go. His new name is Fred, he has another English Bulldog sibling, and he could not be living a more happy and fulfilling life. Fred is just one of many special dogs that we are able to give a second chance thanks to your generous donations. But the cost of seeing him running around and playing in the backyard…is truly priceless. To help more dogs like Fred, considering supporting the Friendship APL with a one-time or recurring donation. We proudly own and operate the largest animal shelter in Lorain County. Gus came to us after being surrendered to a shelter with a female Bulldog. Unfortunately, the female was too sick and even after an emergency surgery, she did not make it. Gus was in a little better shape so we addressed his medical concerns one at a time! The results came back positive for cancer. Fortunately, this type of cancer is generally taken care of once it is removed. However due to this, Gus will need closely monitored for the remainder of his life. He loves attention and being with his people. He loves a good nap on the couch and prefers a pillow so he can elevate his head. He has not been kid tested, but due to his overwhelmingly sweet personality we do not anticipate there would be any issues. Gus does prefer to be the only dog though and would do best in a home without other pets. He is crate trained and doing better with leash walking and house breaking! He is looking for a family to love him, spoil him and to let him take it easy for the remainder of his golden years. Donations can be made via our PayPal account - info prodogsohio. mini bernedoodle puppies iowa - Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. Click here for more information on this characteristic Goldador Overview The idea was to create a working dog with the sensitivity of the Golden Retriever and the tolerance of the Labrador Retriever. It worked. Cross them, and the result is the unequivocally genial Goldador. Thanks to their easygoing nature and keen intelligence, Goldadors have proven outstanding guide dogs, service dogs, search and rescue dogs, therapy dogs, and bomb detection dogs. But like their parent breeds, Goldadors are happiest simply working alongside a person they love. Goldadors are active and require at least half an hour of daily exercise — most enjoy retrieving games as well as hiking and swimming. Training the eager-to-please Goldador is relatively easy — they come from a long line of dogs who work closely and willingly with people. This makes them an excellent choice for first-time owners, provided they get the exercise, structure, and positive reinforcement they crave. Goldadors are also a good option for families with children though they can be a bit rambunctious for toddlers , as they want nothing more than to be part of family activities. The ideal residence for a Goldador is a home with a fenced yard, but with regular exercise and companionship they can live and thrive in apartments and condos. Whatever his home, a Goldador should live indoors with his people. Goldadors are good family dogs and generally do well with children of all ages. The Goldador sheds moderately and requires weekly brushing. Goldadors require about 30 minutes of exercise per day. They enjoy being outdoors and can make excellent jogging companions. Although a house with a fenced yard is the ideal home for a Goldador, he can do well in an apartment or condo with proper exercise. Goldadors can be a good choice for first-time dog owners. Goldador History The Goldador was first developed more than a decade ago: the Labrador Retriever and the Golden Retriever were crossed with the hopes of creating a sensitive, tolerant working dog. The effort proved successful. At this time, there are no breed clubs or any efforts to create a breed standard for the Goldador. Goldador Size The Goldador is one of the few designer breeds with a fairly predictable size, as both parent breeds are large and similar in size and shape. The Goldador is usually 22 to 24 inches tall at the shoulder and weighs 60 to 80 pounds. Goldador Personality The Goldador is affectionate and loyal, alert enough to make an excellent watchdog, but too friendly to be an effective guard dog. His intelligence and desire to please render him highly trainable, and he responds best to positive reinforcement techniques. Socialization helps ensure that your Goldador puppy grows up to be a well-rounded dog. Goldador Health Goldadors are prone to certain health conditions. Some dogs show pain and lameness on one or both rear legs, but you may not notice any signs of discomfort in a dog with hip dysplasia. As the dog ages, arthritis can develop. Hip dysplasia is hereditary, but it can be worsened by environmental factors, such as rapid growth from a high-calorie diet or injuries incurred from jumping or falling on slick floors. Elbow Dysplasia is a heritable condition common to large-breed dogs. This can lead to painful lameness. Your vet may recommend surgery to correct the problem, or medication and weight loss to control the pain. Cataracts are an opacity on the lens of the eye that causes difficulty in seeing. The eye s of the dog will have a cloudy appearance. Diabetes mellitus is a disorder in which the body cannot regulate blood sugar levels. Blood sugar levels are regulated in part by insulin, which is produced in the pancreas. Glucose sugar is needed by the cells of the body to burn for energy; insulin is the key that lets the glucose into the cell. Without insulin, the glucose cannot enter the cell, so the cells are hungry even though there are high levels of glucose circulating in the blood. A diabetic dog will eat more food to try to compensate, but he will lose weight because food is not being used efficiently. Signs of diabetes are excessive urination and thirst, increased appetite, and weight loss. Diabetes can be controlled by diet and daily insulin injections. Progressive Retinal Atrophy PRA : This is a degenerative eye disorder that eventually causes blindness from the loss of photoreceptors at the back of the eye. PRA is detectable years before the dog shows any signs of blindness. Fortunately, dogs can use their other senses to compensate for blindness, and a blind dog can live a full and happy life. Both parents should have health clearances from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals for hips, elbows, heart, and thyroid and from the Canine Eye Registry Foundation CERF certifying that the eyes are normal. Goldador Care The ideal home for a Goldador is a house with a fenced yard where he can play safely; however, he can do well in an apartment or condo if he gets daily walks or runs. Interested in dog sports? Goldadors make formidable competitors in agility and flyball. Mental stimulation is crucial as well. Teach your Goldador to fetch the paper or your slippers, practice obedience training regularly with him, and put his mind to work from time to time with an interactive dog toy. As with all dogs, positive reinforcement techniques praise, play, and food rewards work best with the Goldador. Goldador Feeding Recommended daily amount: 3. Note: How much your adult dog eats depends on his size, age, build, metabolism, and activity level. It almost goes without saying that a highly active dog will need more than a couch potato dog. For more on feeding your Goldador, see our guidelines for buying the right food , feeding your puppy , and feeding your adult dog. Goldador Coat Color And Grooming A Goldador should have the same double coat as a Labrador Retriever, with a short, thick, straight topcoat and a soft, dense undercoat some have a slight wave down the back. Weekly brushing with a rubber curry brush will remove dead hair, helping to keep it off your clothes and furniture. During seasonal shedding periods, however, daily brushing is recommended. Bathe your Goldador as needed, and be sure to give him a thorough freshwater rinse any time he goes swimming. The Goldador can be prone to ear infections, so check and clean the ears weekly. Other grooming needs include dental hygiene and nail care. Trim his nails once or twice a month, as needed. Handle his paws frequently — dogs are touchy about their feet — and look inside his mouth and ears. Goldador Children And Other Pets Goldadors are an ideal family companion and are generally gentle and loving toward children of all ages. As puppies, they can be a bit rambunctious and may knock over smaller children unintentionally, so close supervision is important. Social and easy-going, Goldadors do well with other dogs and pets, especially when raised together. Always teach children how to approach and touch dogs, and always supervise any interactions between dogs and young children to prevent any biting or ear or tail pulling on the part of either party. No dog, no matter how good-natured, should ever be left unsupervised with a child. Goldador Rescue Groups There are no official rescue groups for the Goldador, but this cross is frequently available at private and municipal animal shelters. More Info For You. Tomato leaves stem or unripe fruit Alcohol, beer, wine or liquor Grapes or raisins Golden Retriever Crossed with Labrador Exercise Requirements The Lab Golden Retriever Mix has an active temperament so they might get destructive if they get bored. It is recommended to exercise them at least 2 hours daily. Getting them to do physical activities every day will help keep him happy and healthy. Here are some outdoor activities that you can try with your Golden Retriever Lab Mix: Hiking: It is a great way to turn your daily walk more challenging and exciting for your dog. Swimming: Utilize your private pool and do a swimming exercise with your dog companion. Swimming does not only serve as an exercise activity to yourself and to your companion dog, but it is also a great bonding experience. It also provides relief from the heat during the summer months. Make sure you supervise your dog all the time while doing this activity. Dock Diving: This is a fun sports activity to enjoy with your dog. All you have to do is throw a floating toy and encourage your dog to jump and swim out to retrieve it. If you and your Golden Retriever Lab Mix want to upgrade the challenge, you can try joining a Dock Diving Club and compete with other dogs. Play Fetch: This is a classic outdoor game that is great to do in summer. Challenge your dog by putting a twist to the activity, you can either use a Frisbee or a tennis racquet to make the object travel farther for your Golden Labrador to retrieve and return back to you. However, you should not be working them too much because when it comes to recovering objects, both parent breeds of Golden Retriever Lab Mix can be overly enthusiastic. However, even though they are intelligent dogs and has a friendly nature, you still need to put time and effort to train them better. Both parent breeds were bred to carry things. The best way to teach your Goldador not to bark is to socialize them frequently with strangers. Use Positive Reinforcement The Labrador crossed with Golden Retriever is a sensitive type of dog, so training them using positive reinforcement will be very helpful. Make sure to avoid negative punishment-based training since this hybrid dog may end up fearing you rather than respecting you as their leader. Make it a regular routine to reward your puppy whenever they do something right. Training your Goldador consistently in a positive method will give you pet companions that are obedient and good-natured. Do Mental Exercise The Golden Retriever mixed with Lab is an intelligent dog, and they need stimulating mental activities to avoid developing any aggressive behaviors, such as nuisance barking and chewing. Without proper mental exercise, Goldador puppies will grow into a passive, timid and uninspired dog. Labrador Golden Retriever Mix and Families Despite its large size, the Labrador mixed with Golden Retriever is a great family dog because of its easy-going personality. It is extremely friendly and affectionate. The Goldador is the type of dog that goes well in a loving and active family — one that considers him as a family member. The Golden Labradors cherish the company with children. They are naturally gentle, but they can play tirelessly as long as your kids can keep up. However, due to their sheer size, supervision is still needed around toddlers and infants. The Goldadors makes an excellent therapy and companion dog. Because of their affectionate nature, they generally do well when given lots of attention and affection. These hybrid dogs love to be with people, and hence it is tough for them to cope with solitude. So give love lots of love and affection to your Goldador Lab Retriever Mix and expect that it will shower you back with love. Labrador Retriever Mix, or a Goldador Dog. The Goldador dog is a playful and good-natured, large dog. When you cross a purebred Labrador Retriever with a purebred Golden Retriever , even though both parents are recognized purebred dog breeds, the result — the Goldador — is a hybrid dog; recently known as a designer dog. Designer breeds come in a variety of coat colors and types, depending on the genes and appearance of the parent breeds. This cross-breed dog has parents with hunting and retrieving skills. They are often used as therapy dogs, guide dogs, search and rescue dogs, and other types of service dogs, even bomb detection: but not as a guard dog or watchdog! This hybrid dog breed has the classic appearance of the Labrador Retriever and Golden Retriever dogs; inheriting their friendly, smiley face and their big brown eyes. The Labrador Golden Retriever mix is soft, loving, and intelligent. This is a large, bouncy, and easy-going dog that loves to be active. It will want to be wherever you are; in your bed, on your sofa or in the bathroom with you! A Goldador puppy is simply adorable. But remember, nowhere is private with a Goldador around! Fact: When two different dog breeds are intentionally mixed it called a designer dog; any hybrid dog will inherit its characteristics and health problems from both parent breeds but the result will not be seen until the puppy is born and observed as it grows up. A Goldador is friendly and will always want to be close to you. In , Lord Tweedmouth, a British Aristocrat, wanted a loyal and hard-working gundog to retrieve waterfowl while hunting on his estate in Scotland. So he crossed a wavy-coated yellow retriever sire with a Tweed Water Spaniel dam and produced 3 Golden-colored Retriever puppies. Fact: the Tweed Water Spaniel is now an extinct dog breed. Lord Tweedmouth mixed this new breed Retriever with an Irish Setter dog to breed the recognized Golden Retriever dog breed. In , the Golden Retriever dog breed was registered by the UK Kennel Club, and they quickly became popular as family pets and show dogs. Parent 2: A brief history of the Labrador Retriever parent — a purebred dog The Labrador Retriever is the best-loved and most popular dog breed in the world! It has a solid- color double coat in one of 3 colors; pure black, chocolate brown, or yellow. Whatever the coat color this is just a good looking dog breed for any level of dog owner or family member. The Labrador Retriever dog is from Newfoundland, Canada, and was used by fishermen to retrieve fish from nets and catch those that escaped back into the sea. They are good swimmers and have a gentle mouth grip that will not further destroy any prey they are ordered to retrieve. The Newfoundland and Labrador Province, in Canada, provided this hunting and retrieving dog with its name — the Labrador Retriever or Lab to its friends! The Newfoundland Labrador Retriever dog breed came to Great Britain around , to be used as gun dogs for retrieving waterfowl from land and water, during the shooting season, in Scotland and England. Ongoing breeding is believed to have continued the pure Newfoundland lab bloodline in our Labrador Retriever breed today. Meet the offspring: The hybrid offspring of these two purebred dogs is the Golden Retriever Lab mix — the Goldador puppy. This mixed breed puppy will be happy, affectionate, and will easily become a family member for sure. Fact: Designer dogs are increasing in popularity and so is the trend to give them a cute combo name that reflects a bit of both parent names. The Goldador puppy will inherit characteristics from both parents. What are the main characteristics of a Golden Retriever Lab Mix? Like any other crossbreed, a Labrador Golden Retriever Labrador mix can inherit the characteristics of either parent or both. Crossbreed dogs, like The Goldador, are no more likely to inherit health issues than purebred dogs; in fact, it is believed they may actually be stronger. Any mixed puppy can inherit all, some, or none of the health issues its parent breeds have. It can be heavily weighted towards the characteristics of one parent more than the other. The characteristics of The Goldador are a combination of nature and nurture: genetics of the parents, the environment, and the quality, type and amount of training and socialization. The Goldador — possible coat colors Both Golden Retriever and Labrador Retriever parents have a thick, double coat: a water-resistant topcoat and a warm undercoat. Therefore the Goldador will inherit the same double coat but is likely to be short-haired like the Labrador. With its impressive and popular parent breed mix it will be loyal with a loving temperament and good around children and other dogs. It will be caring and become and active companion, that just wants to be by your side all the time. Reputation: This large Golden Labrador mix breed dog comes from two of the best-loved and most popular dog breeds. This is why they can make such good service and guide dogs, therapy dogs or even search and rescue dogs. They will still need to be trained and socialized early to teach them how to use that energy positively and learn how to behave in public. They are people-friendly and need exercise. They would not make a good guard dog, or watchdogs as they are approachable with strangers and make friends easily. So watch your slippers! Trainability: The trainability of this intelligent Golden Labrador mixed breed should be easy. The Goldador needs to be trained and socialized early as it will inherit a herding instinct and be highly active. They may attempt to take over and herd small children and smaller pets so they need to be controlled. Positive reinforcement and small treats will work well but not harsh discipline, or any form of negative punishment or physical restraint. Power and intelligence: This mixed breed dog is very intelligent, strong, and active with a herding and working drive. It will enjoy and need working challenges incorporating mental and physical stimulation, but it will be curious and want to investigate the other side of the fence. Socialization: Early socialization and discipline are strongly recommended for any crossbred dog especially those with herding and service dog parents. The Labrador Golden Retriever Mix wants to be active and occupied; if bored it may become destructive and bark. When trained and socialized this mixed breed dog will be approachable and friendly around all types of people, children, and other animals. Purpose: Any herding or working dog will want to be useful and please its owner. It will need to be trained and socialized early as it will help with control its excitement in public and develop obedience norms. It will form an early bond and lasting companionship with its owner. Either parent will still give it an athletic, well-balanced build and a strong working ethic. Life Span Did You Know? The Golden Labrador is a designer dog breed that originated in the United States. They are a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Labrador Retriever. The goal was to combine these two highly popular breeds to create a dog that exhibits the best traits from both of them. A mixed dog breed can take after one parent breed more than the other or any combination of traits from the parent breeds. This can result in some variation among individual puppies. But, overall, a Golden Labrador is friendly, intelligent, energetic, and affectionate. Although this mixed breed is not recognized by the American Kennel Club, they are recognized by other notable organizations like the American Canine Hybrid Club and more. This large designer breed is characterized by their energetic personality and friendly disposition. Both of the parent breeds in this cross are open, friendly, and affectionate, so you can expect the same in your Golden Labrador puppy. They are very playful and get along fabulously with children, other dogs, and other pets. They may be alert enough to be a good watchdog, but they do not make good guard dogs. They are instinctually more interested in making new friends and getting attention than they are with anything else. They can have a slight prey drive, but most of the time, they are just curious and interested in playing and making friends. The Golden Labrador is a moderately adaptable dog breed. Their large size and energy tend to make them a better fit for larger homes with room to run. They can adapt well to apartment living as long as they are given enough exercise and mental stimulation. But, small spaces can be a challenge because they are large dogs that are so playful and energetic. Golden Labradors do well in just about any climate. As with most dog breeds, they are sensitive to heat and extreme cold. Because they love their families, thrive on attention, and get bored easily, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. As a mixed breed, a Golden Labrador can inherit the potential health conditions of one or both of the parent breeds. Although the Golden Labrador is a relatively healthy dog breed, there are some potential health conditions to be aware of. These include eye problems like progressive retinal atrophy and joint issues common to large dogs like patellar luxation and hip dysplasia. Like their parent breeds, the Golden Labrador can be prone to weight gain, which does put them at risk of diabetes later in life. Reputable breeders will screen their stock to ensure genetic conditions are not being passed on to puppies. Regular vet visits, proper nutrition, and sufficient exercise can help keep your dog healthy and reduce preventable diseases. Both of the parent breeds in this cross are highly intelligent and highly trainable, so the Golden Labrador should be no different. Eager to please their owners, these dogs pick up on things quickly and respond best to positive training methods focused on praise and reward. This dog breed, like both of the parent breeds, is a great fit for owners of all experience levels, including first-time dog owners. Their high energy can sometimes be a challenge, so you may want to consider puppy training and obedience classes. This designer dog breed may be called a Golden Labrador, but they can show up in many colors. A cream, yellow, or golden coat may be the most common, but a Golden Labrador can also have a black, red, or brown coat. It tends to be a dense double coat that is short or medium in length. This dog breed will shed moderately year-round with heavier shedding sessions twice a year as the seasons change. During seasonal changes, you may want to increase to daily brushing. Not only will this make your dog more comfortable, but it will also decrease the amount of loose fur that ends up around your house. In addition to coat care, you will also need to handle nail, ear, and dental care for your Golden Labrador. Floppy ears tend to trap more dirt, moisture, and debris, which makes them more prone to developing ear infections than ears that stick straight up. Unfortunately, this is often overlooked, which is why gum disease is one of the most common health issues in dogs. Beyond that, you can use vet-approved dental hygiene chews and treats and even a specially-formulated dental care diet to supplement your efforts. Getting them used to it early and keeping it a positive experience can make grooming a lot easier as your puppy grows into a big dog! Plus, it can become a bonding experience that your dog looks forward to. Golden Labradors are high-energy dogs. Daily walks, playtime, and some extra activity are generally enough for this dog to stay happy and healthy. But, they will probably tire out before you do! Their friendly nature makes the Golden Labrador a great fit for trips to the dog park. Try teaching your dog how to play frisbee. With their retriever background, it could become one of their favorite activities. You can also train your Golden Labrador for several dog sports like agility, dock diving, obedience, and more. A fully-grown Golden Labrador usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs between pounds. A Golden Labrador generally lives years. Although Golden Labrador is the most popular name for this designer dog breed, they are also sometimes referred to as a Goldador or a Goldador Retriever. Featured Golden Labrador Article. The double coat has a soft undercoat below a rough top coat that is water resistant. Either way, their coat will be fairly high maintenance. Shedding and Grooming Your new friend is going to shed, sometimes a lot. Both parent breeds heavily shed their coats with the change of seasons twice a year. For the rest of the year, expect a moderate level of shedding. Increased brushing during transitional times can help catch the loose hairs and stop them from spreading everywhere. Golden Retriever Labrador mixes will need weekly brushing, likely more during shedding season. Their nails should be trimmed regularly as well. Are They Hypoallergenic? The Goldador dog will not be hypoallergenic. They are high shedders, spreading dander from skin and saliva liberally around your home! With designer breeds like the Golden Retriever Lab, you can only make an educated guess about their temperament based on the general demeanor of their parents as well as the temperament of the parent breeds as a whole. If they are left alone a lot, they may become very destructive to your home. They will chew out of boredom or anxiety. As many Lab lovers know, these dogs do not know a stranger. Generally, the Goldador will get on well with children and other pets. Socialization Socialization from an early age is important for any breed, including the Golden Retriever Lab. Even though it hails from overly friendly and sociable breeds, there are still no guarantees to the temperament of your dog. Since training and socialization are both best started early on, puppy training classes can be a great way to both train and socialize your puppy at the same time. Training Tips The Goldador has an easygoing and eager to please temperament that helps make them highly trainable. Owners should start training early, from the time their puppy comes home. The parent breeds have a long history as service dogs, bomb detection dogs, hunting dogs, and now therapy dogs. Obedience classes will help create a well-mannered dog but also strengthens the bond between the dog and owner. Since Goldadors grow to be large dogs, obedience is also important to prevent them from jumping up at your guests! Energy Levels Golden Retriever Labrador puppies will grow into high-energy adults with a love for playing and a passion for retrieving! A Labrador Golden Retriever Mix makes a great companion for jogging, hiking, or cycling. This is a breed that also loves to swim. Canine sports, like agility, obedience trials, and tracking, are also a great way to keep your dog physically active, mentally stimulated, and out of trouble. As a very social breed, they do best as indoor dogs, but with a large, fenced in yard to run around. In addition to self-exercise, they need walks or other forms of daily activity with their owners. Exercise is especially important for the health of your Goldador since both Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers have a tendency to develop elbow and hip dysplasia. Weight management is one way of combating these joint problems. Health and Care All pedigree dog breeds are inbred to some extent. The measure of this is called the coefficient of inbreeding COI. The higher the COI, the greater the risks of health issues arising specifically from inbreeding. In a crossbreed such as the Goldador, the COI is usually much lower than it is in a purebred dog, and this is a good thing. To begin to look at the health and care of a Goldador we first need to consider the inherited health risks from both parent breeds Labrador and Golden Retriever. Labrador Health Labrador Retrievers are prone to a few hereditary health conditions and joint problems, as well as some health issues common to most dogs. To help minimize the likelihood of hereditary health issues in your new Goldador pup, check that your breeder has followed the recommended testing for the Labrador Retriever breed: Hereditary Nasal Parakeratosis HNKP. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. The Labrador retriever and the golden retriever are two of the most popular dog breeds in the United States. Both are attractive and energetic dogs that are highly intelligent, easy to please, and incredibly friendly. It was only ever a matter of time before someone tried to cross these two breeds. The resulting crossbreed is known as the Goldador! This crossbreed mixes the best of both parent breeds to create a friendly pup ideal for active families with children or for taking on sociable working roles. With the right amount of love, affection, exercise, and mental stimulation, these crossbreeds make the perfect addition to any household. Goldadors are even suitable for first-time owners, as long as their owner has enough time and energy to keep up with these energetic, loyal pups. Read on to find out everything you need to know about Goldador dogs. Goldador Main Characteristics Height: 22 to 24 inches Weight: 60 to 80 pounds Lifespan: 10 to 15 years Key Characteristics: Intelligent, highly trainable, friendly, good with children, high energy, moderate shedding Goldador: History Of The Breed Labrador Retrievers Labrador retrievers were originally Canadian fishing dogs that were later imported to the UK and developed to be a retriever-gun dog. The Labrador is a sporty medium-sized dog with a stocky physique and a broad, square face. They usually weigh between 55 and 80 pounds. They tend to have a short, dense coat that is water-resistant, and these dogs love to swim! The most common coat colors are black , yellow, and chocolate. Labradors are very friendly and tend to make friends with strangers and other animals with ease. They are highly intelligent and easy to please, which makes them easy to train. These characteristics combined make them excellent working dogs, especially when it comes to disability support. They are often used as guide dogs. Labs are energetic dogs that need lots of exercise and attention. Golden Retrievers Golden retrievers were also bred in the UK to retrieve shot waterfowl such as ducks. They have a soft mouth that allows them to delicately retrieve and bring back game undamaged. Like Labradors, golden retrievers also love water and are strong swimmers. This is another medium-to-large breed that typically measures somewhere between 20 and 22 inches in height. They have a double coat with a top layer that is high shedding. They are both friendly and confident, which makes them excellent family pets. They are also particularly good with children, who they will adopt as their own. While they will be protective of their people, golden retrievers are very friendly and more likely to go in for a pat and a play rather than bark or attack a stranger. They are intelligent, biddable, and have a strong eagerness to please, which makes them highly trainable. This is why golden retrievers are also often used as working dogs in activities such as search and rescue as well as disability assistance. Goldador Goldadors have been around for about 20 years and are an attempt to bring together the best of the Labrador and golden retriever breeds. Normally, crossbred dogs can be highly unpredictable, because there is no reliable way of predicting how the genes of the two parent dogs will mix. However, with Labs and Goldens, while we may not be able to predict their exact appearance, the temperaments of the two dogs are consistent enough that the resulting mix always has the friendly, intelligent, and easy to please temperament that most people are looking for. Goldador Appearance Goldadors are medium-to-large-sized dogs that typically measure between 20 and 24 inches tall and weigh somewhere between 55 and 80 pounds. Females tend to be noticeably smaller than the males. You can expect them to reach their full size somewhere between 18 and 24 months of age. Goldadors typically have a double coat that mixes a short, thick, straight topcoat and a soft, dense undercoat. This allows them to enjoy a swim even in the coldest water, but it also means they tend to shed quite a lot. They need to be brushed at least once a week to remove dead hair and more often during seasonal shedding periods. Their coat is likely to range in color from a yellowish gold to a reddish gold, though on rare occasions, they may inherit the black or chocolate coat of their Labrador parent. It is difficult to predict whether the square face of the Labrador or the more pointed face of the golden retriever will be prevalent in their puppies. While they might jump up to protect children they consider to be part of their family, aggression among these dogs is almost unheard of and will almost always relate to some kind of traumatic experience. They are more curious about other creatures than worried about them. Intelligence Goldadors are extremely intelligent, and both of their parents are ranked among the most intelligent breeds. This means not only that they can learn new commands quickly, but that they are also independent thinkers. They can figure out what is wanted from them in new situations based on their past experiences. Of course, when not probably utilized, this intelligence can become problematic. A Goldador left at home for hours on end is likely to turn their keen mind into finding a way to escape. Trainability There are many intelligent dogs out there that are difficult to train primarily because they are incredibly stubborn. Thankfully, Goldadors are eager to please and highly motivated by reward, which makes them extremely loyal and easy to train. These dogs also have a great work ethic, and they enjoy having something to do. This means they make great working dogs, and they have the attention span to take on challenges such as disability support. They find this mentally stimulating and emotionally rewarding. Energy Level Goldadors have lots of energy that needs to be burned off on a daily basis. They need a minimum of at least 30 minutes of solid exercise a day, but they will really thrive if given at least an hour or more of exercise per day. They are better adapted to spaces with at least a small garden to apartment living. They will particularly love joining their families on hikes and other adventures. They also love to swim, so swimming should make up a regular part of their activity. Independence Goldadors love being around their people. These are not the types of dogs you can leave at home for extended periods of time. While they might be able to settle down and do nothing for a few hours when you are around, if they are left alone, they can become anxious. This prolonged anxiety can result in lots of nervous, and often destructive, energy. Goldador Health Risks If you adopt a Goldador, you can expect them to live for roughly 10 to 15 years, which is a respectable amount of time for a large-sized dog. They can be prone to inherited health conditions, but whether or not your Goldador will suffer from any of these ailments as they grow is pretty much the luck of the draw. You can get some indication of their likelihood of developing these conditions if you look at the medical records of their parents. One of the most common health problems affecting Goldadors is hip and elbow dysplasia. This is a malformation of the bones that occurs as they grow, as their bones grow at different rates and end up being the wrong size for one another. The best way to prevent this is with a healthy diet and lots of exercise when they are young to prevent the problem from developing. Check out our advice on choosing the right dog food for your Goldador. These dogs can also develop joint issues in later life, which can make moving painful. If this happens, an orthopedic bed that helps take excess pressure off their joints can make a big difference. Goldadors may also develop problems with their eyes, including cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy. These dogs often lose at least some of their sight as they pass through their senior years. They also have a tendency to develop diabetes. If this happens, they will require a special diet. I started raising guide and service dog puppies over 15 years ago. The Goldador has been gaining in popularity among many of the service dog schools. When I spoke to the puppy program manager at Canine Companions for Independence, he told me that the majority of their service dogs were Labrador Retriever Golden Retriever mixes. Many other schools have introduced Golden-Lab mixes into their service dog programs. The mixed traits of both a Golden and a Lab is very popular among guide and service dog schools. Should I Get A Goldador? Having read all of this, you might still be wondering whether a Goldador is the right dog for you. You should start by asking yourself whether you are in a position to make the commitment to adopting any dog. Remember, by adopting a dog, you are committing to care for, love, and support your pup for the next 10 to 15 years. Do you have plans to move in the coming years? If so, will you be able to take your dog with you? Do you have someone who can look after your dog when you travel? This could be a friend, a family member, or a reputable kennel that is able to care for your dog for a certain period of time. Once you have answered those questions, it is time to think about adopting a Goldador specifically. Be sure to ask yourself the following questions moving forward. Do You Have Space? Goldadors thrive when they have at least some outdoor space to call their own. They will struggle with apartment living. Be sure your outdoor space is properly fenced to prevent your Goldador from escaping if they get bored and start digging. Goldadors need to be around people often. They can develop anxiety issues if left alone for extended periods of time. Are there people around the house most of the time to keep your dog company? Also, will you be able to commit at least 30 to 60 minutes each day to providing your Goldador with exercise? Be sure you have plenty of time to spend with your Goldador, as they can be fairly emotionally needy dogs. Goldadors not only need quite a bit of physical exercise, at least 30 minutes a day, but also quite a bit of mental stimulation. Their intelligence and work ethic mean they need someone to take the time to train them and keep them occupied. Thankfully, Goldadors are actually excellent dogs for first-time owners. They are highly trainable, so even a novice should be able to teach them the essentials. Their friendly nature means you are also very unlikely to end up with an aggressive dog that you struggle to control. Additionally, if anyone in the home has asthma, you will want to groom your Goldador regularly to avoid leaving excess hair around the home. Yes, Goldadors are excellent dogs that mix friendliness, intelligence, and energy in one adorable package. The characteristics of their parents tend to complement each other nicely to create a medium-to-large-sized dog that makes a great family pet or working pup. How much does a Goldador cost? The exact cost of a Goldador depends primarily on your location and whether you adopt from a shelter, a breeder, or elsewhere. How do you train a Goldador puppy? The best way to train most dogs is by using positive reinforcement. This means showing your pup the behavior that you would like and then rewarding them when they complete the behavior. Positive reinforcement training teaches dogs how to perform desired behaviors and that they can expect good things to happen if they do it. Soon, it will become instinctive, and you will no longer need to reward them every time. This is a particularly good form of training for Goldadors because they are highly motivated by both treats and pleasing. It is never a good idea to punish dogs when they misbehave. Finally, punishment often teaches dogs different lessons than the ones you actually want them to learn. For example, instead of learning not to pee in the house, they might just learn not to pee while you are around. They are great with children and have a temperament that first-time owners should be able to manage well. They are energetic dogs that do best when they have some outdoor space to call their own and at least 30 minutes of exercise each day. Overall, Goldadors are: Extremely loyal, but will develop separation anxiety if left alone for too long Large dogs that tend to shed heavily Does this sound like the perfect canine companion for you?
