A dog is not considered to be bicolored unless it has these distinctive black markings and they can appear on both dual- and sable-patterned dogs. Sable The word sable means the color of black. The definition of a sable pattern refers to guard hairs being tipped with black. The more guard hairs and the longer the tipping, the darker the dog. Black sables are dogs with heavy tipping and less ground color. Agouti is a term that refers to the banding or grizzling of hair coloration that can be seen in varying amounts in the neck, shoulder, tail, croup and border markings in saddle-marked dogs. Some German Shepherds have so much grizzling in the black blanket or so much undercoat showing, that they are hard to distinguish from sables, and some sables that carry the partially-hidden, saddle-pattern recessive gene have so much of that recessive showing through that they look like washed-out saddles. Melanistic is another term associated with black coloring. Melanistic refers to the amount and density of melanin black pigment found within the hair shaft. Melanistic coloring refers to the masking of a color or pattern with black. Sable-colored German Shepherds are infamous for changing colors multiple times before reaching maturity. Adult dogs can have a completely different coloring and pattern then what was present as a puppy. No good dog is a bad color. Black is uncommon due to being a recessive gene but still prevalent within the breed. Typically, they are completely black with no other colors on the body. Solid White Solid white German Shepherds are not albinos. Their color is the result of a recessive gene that can be carried by any colored dog. When learning about pigment and color patterns, understand that white is not a color. There is no solid-color gene for white. The more pure white a dog, the lighter the color of its masked color underneath. Every white German Shepherd is really a traditional color and pattern covered by a white mask. The blue colors in these dogs replace the black areas of their more common black-and-tan counterparts. Blue dogs often appear as a dusty or somewhat light gray with a gray leather nose. Sometimes puppies are born with very light eyes as well. This, too, is a rare recessive gene and considered by the AKC to be a faulty eye color. Isabella An Isabella German Shepherd, aka lilac or mouse-gray German Shepherd, is the result of a recessive gene dilution giving them a washed-out silvery-blue color. The color is not technically a blue, however. The color is most widely recognized within the Weimaraner breed. Because Isabella German Shepherds are less common and considered faulty for showing purposes, there are fewer reputable and responsible breeders. Select your Isabella GSD breeder carefully and insist on thorough health testing information and lineage information. Liver Liver is another recessive gene leading to liver-colored offspring. In a liver-colored dog, all the black parts are a brown or liver color, ranging from light to dark shades. They might also have light eyes—which typically changes into a darker color with maturity. Panda The Panda German Shepherd is a piebold-colored dog meaning no more than 35 percent of its body is white with mixed patches of black and brown. Research confirms that this pattern is not the result of crossbreeding—but rather a genetic mutation. Ticking vs. Roan vs. Blue Merle Ticking is flecks or spots of color on white areas. Most ticked dogs are born white and develop ticking as they mature. Generally, ticking is heaviest on the legs and muzzle. Roan is a pattern of white and colored hairs evenly mixed over the white areas of the body. Roaning creates a near-solid pattern over a white coat causing a dog to appear dusted with white. If the predominant color of the dog is black, then the roaning can appear bluish in color. People sometimes confuse merle dogs with roan or ticked dogs. Merle dogs do not have a white base coat of color, however, some merle dogs are ticked. The genes responsible for ticking, roaning and merle are dominant so a purebred German Shepherd cannot produce these patterns without being crossed with a dog breed that carries the genes. As we can see from the images above, German Shepherds come in an array of coat colors and patterns—including saddle, blanket, bicolor, sable and solid colors. The organization does not, however, allow dogs of these colors to be shown in the conformation ring as these characteristics are faults according to the German Shepherd breed standard. Dogs carrying the liver gene or the recessive dilution gene that produces either Isabella or blue dogs also carry serious penalties in the show ring. Liver, blue and Isabella are not recognized because of the color of their leathers; and the solid whites are omitted due to the absence of black in the hairs on top of their backs. If you wish to campaign and show your dog in the conformation ring however, you will need to keep with animals with traditionally accepted colors and patterns. Dogs that are liver, blue or Isabella are severely penalized. Once I got started on some medicine to treat my pain and anxiety, Animal Aid started to see a huge improvement in my behavior and an increase in my desire to train. One of my dedicated Emergency Kennel volunteers ended up falling in love with me and brought me into her home for fostering, so I could prepare for surgery to get my rear-end in better shape. Surgery and recovery was pretty hard on me because I love to be active and had to remain calm for such a long time, but I was approved for increased activity and continue to build up my strength with the guidance of my friends at Amicus Physical Therapy. Ive really been able to learn so much about how nice it can be living inside of home, but I still tend to love spending as much time outdoors as possible! Im a big fan of chasing squirrels, so it helps tremendously that my fosters have a tall and secure fence to keep me and the squirrels safe. My current fosters have taught me many valuable skills that they will share with an adopter and they continue to keep up with my behavioral modification and management with the guidance of the awesome staff at Synergy Behavior Solutions. I am looking for.I need a home that is going to be dedicated to following my behavioral plans, meeting my needs, and giving me all the love I deserve so I can continue to prosper. I definitely need a home with a fenced yard because outside time is my absolute favorite and I am reactive towards strangers and other dogs though I have made amazing improvement with some fear free training! I love to chase and go on walks with other dogs, but I can be a bit rude and annoying if the other dog isnt interested in playing with me. I should not live full-time with another dog and should be kept under close supervision during any playtime meetings due to my history of resource guarding. After some scuffles with my foster brother, we now live in separate areas of our home. Unfortunately, due to my bite-history, I cannot be safely placed in a home with children or a home that might expect to have children in the future. Likes: I love to play! I could really play all day, if you let me. Tug seems to be my favorite game, but now that I am allowed to run again, fetch is also a blast! I love to romp around and chase my flirt pole, theres definitely some kind of herding breed in me! I also really enjoy spending time with my people. Luckily, as much as I love my people, Im still very good at spending time alone and have never become vocal or destructive. Ill be full of excitement and wiggles when you come back home though! Im a total smartie pants and bond the fastest with people who know how to work my brain! You better be ready to keep my training time fun and exciting though, otherwise, Ill just get bored with you and go find something more fun to do. Dislikes: We dont know for sure, but its likely that I have been hit in the past due to my fear and sensitivity around raised hands, sticks, poles, etc. You must be cautious about this, especially when I am still learning to trust you as I might aggress if I am triggered. While I am able to tolerate being left alone, I dont seem to enjoy it. Ive got some major FOMO and have been notoriously good at objecting to going back into my confined spaces when my fosters need to head out somewhere. I also dont like to be crated. I do great with exercise pens and baby gates, but I seem to have some claustrophobia with small confinement, like crates. Animal Aid and my fosters have done a great job of helping me get over some of my car riding phobia, but its still not my favorite activity. I seem to be a bit nervous around big trucks and buses when I am out on walks, but am working hard on overcoming this fear. I enjoy meeting new people as long as they are accompanied by someone I trust and follow along with my special introduction instructions which sets everyone up for success! Once you give me some time and we are acclimated to one another, we are certain to be friends for life! Due to all the medical issues and pain I experienced in my young life, I am not a fan of excessive pets and handling. Let me decide when its time for pets or cuddles time, please! I absolutely hate it if you try to take any treats away from me which has resulted in aggressive behavior. I follow a strict management plan when it comes to food and treats to prevent the unpleasant behavior from happening. I have nipped and bit a few folks that left some bruising and scratches. I always seem to feel real sorry about it afterwards, but its really important for any adopter to know about this history and it must be taken into serious consideration as we acclimate to one another in a new home. Here is a list of some of our favorite items, and some things you should have on hand in case you need them. Healthy Treats. Giving your bulldog great dog food can be backfired if you give bad treats. No pupperonis or Bacon snacks! Find treats that are natural, preferably grain free. Fresh and Frozen Vegetables and Fruits. Give these as an alternative to store bought treats. Frozen Green Beans are my personal favorite, almost no calories and no sugar, just vitamins! Give them a spoon of yogurt on their food as an extra treat. Yogurt aids in healthy digestion. Note that if your bulldog is overweight, you may not want to do this with every meal. Canned Pumpkin. Canned Pumpkin is considered a 'super food'. This is NOT pumpkin pie mix, but all natural pumpkin. In dryer climates, the nose can become crusty looking. In my experience, vaseline does not help. Snout soother is all natural and keeps bully noses moist, and you can also put it on dry paw pads as well. Baby Shampoo. Wash the top of the head and ears with baby shampoo. Just in case it gets into the eyes, it will not sting them. Cotton Balls. Put a cotton ball into each ear during bathing by stuffing it in so that the entire ear opening is covered. This will keep water from going into the bulldog ear canal, which is deep. If water gets into the ear canal, your bulldog will get an ear infection. Good Ear Cleaner. If your bully has nice healthy ears, you should clean them once a week, and especially after a bath. I recommend using vet prescribed ear cleaner, like Malacetic Otic, it has good cleaners and drying agents in it. Squeeze some into the ears and massage the ears to really get them clean. Wipe out excess moisture when finished and after bully gives you a shake of their head! Get a good pair of nail trimmers. Keeping bulldog nails trimmed is extremely important. The more often you trim the nails the better. If you let their nails grow long, the quick grows with them. Then when you try to trim them back, you will cut the quick. This is very painful for your bulldog! I use trimmers to cut off any access nail, then use a dremmel to file them down as close to the quick as possible. I love my dremmel and will never cut nails again without it! Bar Soap. Yep, keep a bar of soap handy, just in case you cut the quick during nail trimming time. Push the cut nail into the soap to clog the bleeder. It is kind of like putting a cork on a bottle. If you don't have soap handy, you can use flour or cornstarch. Acne pads like stridex but just the generic brand or Witch Hazel. This will help kill bacteria and dry out moist areas like wrinkles and creases. Diaper Rash Ointment. You can apply diaper rash ointment like Desitin in wrinkles to keep them from getting moist. Make sure the wrinkled area is completely dry prior to application, and keep away from the eyes. Do not allow them to lick it either. Every Vet will probably say they are qualified to care for your bulldog. This is not always the case! Find a vet who has many bulldog patients. Mix 1 part ACV with 3 parts water to ward off yeast. Epsom Salt. Soak your bully's paws in Epsom Salt if they develop interdigital cysts. Hydrogen Peroxide: Use Hydrogen Peroxide if your bulldog has a fresh open wound. You can also mix Peroxide with Cornstarch to make a paste that can be used on stubborn tear stains. Neosphorin or other anti-bacterial ointment. Keep this on hand to treat wounds that are scabbed over. Gold Bond Powder. Use a pointed tip plastic bottle such as a ketchup bottle or hair dye bottle to get the powder in the desired areas. Use Gold Bond on moist wrinkles and tail pockets, or especially if they get any diaper rash. Dental care: Don't forget those toofies! Dental brush and paste, or you can also get the finger cleaners. Chew toys also promote dental health, we do NOT recommend 'Greenies' or other dental chews due to the ingredients. Get 25mg benedryl tablets and keep them with your bully at all times. If your bulldog gets hives or an allergic reaction to something, this could save their life! The dosage is 1mg per pound, so a 50lb bulldog would get two 25mg pills. Panalog Ointment from your vet. Most vets will prescribe panalog to you to keep on hand. Other names for this are Animax or Entoderm ointment. If you bulldog gets yeast, bacteria of fungus in the nose rope, tail pocket or any other deep wrinkles, putting a bit of panalog in there will get rid of the nasty bacteria and the smell that stems from it. If your bulldog becomes overheated or overexcited, their airway can become blocked. Squirt some lemon juice into the side of their mouth, or under the tongue.
