Brown is good. Other colors may not be; however, be mindful that what your puppy has eaten may affect the color. For example, food colors or grass may affect the color of the poop. Be especially concerned if the poop is one of the brighter colors noted, such as red, orange, or yellow. Composition Puppy poop composition is simply what the poop is made up of. There should be no objects in the poop, such as plastic or small sticks. Red streaks could mean blood, and small whiter particles that look like rice could mean worms. It should not be overpowering and cause your eyes to water or want to make you run from the area screaming. A consistently strong odor may mean the puppy has issues with the food or is not digesting it properly. Another culprit could be snacks and human food. Too many snacks or feeding the dog-human food could signal that the puppy is being overfed or that the food is causing gastrointestinal issues. Constipation can be caused by many factors, such as too much or little fiber, a change in diet, an addition to the usual diet, such as snacks or human food, lack of exercise, dehydration, or not enough water. Other issues could be medications, stress, hormones, underlying health issues, or injuries. Constipation can be serious. If your puppy does not improve within 48 hours, call your veterinarian. Here at My Pet Nutritionist it is a common symptom too, but it is often misperceived for regurgitation. There are a number of reasons for both, and they are very different mechanisms. Vomiting is an active process, where the dog is forcefully ejecting the contents of their stomach or intestines. It is often preceded by sound. Food is usually at least partially digested, or it may be bile that comes up. In vomiting you will notice signs of nausea, like drooling or lip licking. Regurgitation is more passive and usually happens while a dog is eating or shortly afterward. There is usually no sound beforehand. Regurgitation is often just water or undigested food. Regurgitation can be common if a dog eats something that is too large — think large bones or chews. But there are also some other reasons for regurgitation. When exposed to a stressful trigger, the sympathetic nervous system fires up. During this process, resources are directed away from the digestive system and so digestive function is compromised. This can lead to the development of acid reflux which is one of the more common reasons for regurgitation. Stress has also been seen to affect oesophageal sensitivity. During stress, corticotropin releasing hormone plays a key role. This hormone is regularly implicated in hypersensitivity which is why conditions like IBS are more common in those who are anxious or stressed. But what it means is that the oesophagus is more sensitive to mechanical distension, chemical stimuli and more, which may lead to regurgitation. Just like we have a barrier in the skin and gut, we also have an oesophageal one. It too is made up of tight junctions and has its own plethora of defence mechanisms, including a mucosal barrier. Things to help him digest the food and smooth the passage are: slippery elm powder from the health food shop, Holland and Barrett sell it in capsules but go for the loose if you can , one dessert spoonful in some honey twice a day; parsley and mint - again mixed in with some honey, about a teaspoon of each; pro-biotics often help, most vets have these in stock, if not just google them they're pretty readily available; and finally replace his plain water with a weak chamomile tea, one bag per pint of boiling water, left for approx mins before removing the bag and allowing to cool - most dogs will take it happily but if as one of mind did he turns his nose up at it swap it back for plain water - don't let him go thirsty. Things that Affect Esophageal Function Megaesophagus — The esophagus is normally a muscular tube that pushes food into the stomach. With megaesophagus , it becomes dilated and weak. Food just sits in the esophagus until it is regurgitated. Megaesophagus can be present at birth or develop later in life. It has many causes, including: Myasthenia gravis — This abnormality in the transmission of nerve signals to muscles can lead to muscular weakness. Other diseases affecting nerves and muscles can look similar to myasthenia gravis. Esophagitis — Chronic or severe inflammation of the esophagus can damage esophageal muscles. This can be seen with gastroesophageal reflux disease GERD or anything else that irritates the esophagus. Exposure to some toxins — Lead, organophosphates, botulinum, and other toxins can lead to megaesophagus in dogs. This may occur after esophageal inflammation or injury, but a cause may not be evident. Some puppies are born with esophageal dysmotility disorders. Dog Breeds Predisposed to Issues That Cause Regurgitation Any dog can develop regurgitation, but some underlying health problems that can lead to it are more common in certain breeds. For example, Wirehaired Fox Terriers and Miniature Schnauzers are genetically predisposed to megaesophagus, but it is also frequently diagnosed in German Shepherds , Shar Peis , and mixed breed dogs. Brachycephalic dogs those with flat faces, like Pugs and Bulldogs are at increased risk for several types of esophageal disease, which can lead to regurgitation. Veterinarians will start diagnosing the cause of regurgitation by asking a lot of questions and performing a full physical examination. This will help them confirm that a dog is indeed regurgitating, rather than vomiting, and identify any clues to potential causes. The x-rays may identify a megaesophagus, foreign body, tumor, or aspiration pneumonia. Your dog may be given a contrast agent, like barium, to better outline their esophagus, but this should be done with caution because barium is dangerous if it gets in the lungs. Slow feeder bowls, or even just a large rock placed in their current bowl, can also help. But as always, if your dog continues to have problems, talk to your veterinarian. The most common causes include myasthenia gravis, Addison's disease , myopathies , and idiopathic megaesophagus. Inflammation of the Esophagus When the lining of the esophagus is inflamed, it tends to 'reject' food. The causes of esophagitis include acid reflux from the stomach, chronic vomiting, hiatus hernia or drug irritation. Regurgitating after surgery is a common result of esophagitis which occurs when the acid moves into the esophagus while the dog is under anesthesia. Similarly, esophagitis can happen only or primarily at night because the dog's relaxed sleep state can make it much easier for reflux occur which is also found in humans. Eating too quickly or exercising too intently and too soon after a meal can also irritate the esophagus. It can also occur if there's a physical blockage from something eaten, such as bones in a raw food diet. If you also notice your dog regurgitating simply clear foamy or white-colored liquid or mucus , this can be a sign of esophagitis, although if the dog is vomiting instead of regurgitating this may indicate gastritis, kennel cough or serious disorders of the kidney, pancreas or liver. Diagnosing the Problem Left untreated there could be serious consequences such as aspirational pneumonia inhaling fluid or food into the lungs or long-term malnutrition and weight loss. Thus, it's important to get the cause of the problem diagnosed. If your dog has regurgitated just once, it's not likely an emergency, but it's wise to get your dog to a veterinarian as soon as it's feasible before it happens again. You want to make sure nothing life threatening is the cause, such as a foreign body in the esophagus or if a serious side effect like aspirational pneumonia is a risk. Your vet will examine the dog and take a history. This helps to work out if the problem may have been present from birth or developed because of disease. But Labradors also come in a couple of different types, and his type will have an impact upon his ideal Labrador weight. English Labs bred from show lines are likely to be at the upper end of the scale. You can expect English Lab weight to be around 60 — 70 lbs for a female and 70 — 80 lbs for a male. Some of our chunkier, show bred Labs can be a good twenty pounds or more heavier than their field bred cousins, without necessarily being overweight. Whereas the American Lab who is field bred is likely to be at the lower end of average. Volume for volume, muscle weighs more. So it is worth bearing in mind, that a very fit dog will have more muscle and may weigh more than an unfit dog of similar dimensions. Black Lab Weight In theory there should be no difference in weight between Labradors of different colors. Black Labrador weight for an English black Lab will probably be at the higher end of the range, for an American black Lab it will likely be lower. Black Labs are frequently found in both these categories, but some Lab colors differ. For example the chocolates. Chocolate Lab Weight Chocolate Labs are more likely to be show bred than field bred. English Labs weigh more than American Labs in general, and may therefore be at the higher end of average when it comes to weight. This is because yellow Labs are commonly found in both categories. The way to effectively judge whether your Lab is at an ideal weight is not through the scales. It is by feel and appearance. You should not be able to see ribs, but if you press firmly along his sides you should just be able to feel your fingers bumping along them. But in most cases it really is not necessary to weigh your puppy every day, or even every week! Any more than you would weigh your three year old child on a daily or even weekly basis. There are however, some exceptions. Very thin puppies Occasionally we have people post up about puppies that are desperately underweight and clearly failing to thrive. Most of these comments come from people that have purchased puppies that are not ready to leave their mothers, and should not have been sold by the breeder. Some of these puppies are as young as three weeks old. If you have inadvertently been sucked into this horrible trade in underage puppies, do contact a vet for help with feeding your puppy, as a matter of urgency. If you are concerned that your puppy might be seriously underweight, again, your vet is the first port of call. As a very rough guide, many Labrador puppies will weigh around a kilo for every week of their lives. So you would expect a ten week puppy to weigh something in the region of ten kilos or around twenty-two pounds. A twenty percent variation around this would be fairly normal. If your puppy falls outside this variation he may still be perfectly healthy, but if you are inexperienced, a check with the vet is a good way to put your mind at rest. Should I Weigh My Dog? You may need to weigh your dog if he needs medical treatment. Determining the appropriate dose of some drugs requires that we know the exact weight of the patient. Really tiny dogs can be weighed accurately on a good sized set of kitchen scales. For once, this is a situation where appearances really do count. Try to get into the habit of looking at your dog objectively and of avoiding comparing with other dogs, many of whom will be overweight. You may find that some other dog owners will tell you your nice slim Labrador is actually too thin. This happens a lot, largely because people are simply getting used to so many dogs being overweight, including some of those receiving the highest accolades in our show rings. Again, if you are worried, check with your vet, but the chances are if someone is telling you this that actually your dog is healthy, and it is really their dog who is overweight. However, once they reach their full height, the calories can be put towards muscle gain and fat storage. Too many calories can make the dog grow too quickly, which can cause hip dysplasia and other problems. Your dog will have plenty of time to bulk up. Because all Retrievers such as also Flat-Coated and Golden Retrievers are very food-motivated, you need to be careful to not overfeed your dog. Is a Labrador a medium or large dog? Technically, a Labrador Retriever can fall into either the medium or large category. They straddle the line as a breed. Individual dogs will either fall at the upper end of the medium category or rest just inside the large category. For this reason, they are often described as medium-to-large-sized dogs. What is a healthy weight for a Labrador? This depends on the dog. The health range for a Labrador is pounds if they are a male and pounds if they are a female. That is a large range.
