Both dogs are of a similar size and have a wolf-like appearance, which is part of what made them prime candidates for crossbreeding. What Are Crossbred Dogs? It is worth noting that crossbred dogs, sometimes called designer dogs, are dogs that have been intentionally bred by mixing two or more recognized breeds. It is not a term for dogs bred accidentally or without purebred ancestors. However, crossbred dogs are not recognized as separate breeds in their own right, so their behavior and characteristics are not as predictable as purebred dogs. One of the advantages of purebred dogs is that it is relatively easy to predict their size, appearance, and temperament. Gerberian Shepsky Appearance As both German Shepherds and Siberian Huskies are medium-sized dogs with a wolf-like appearance, you can expect similar traits from their offspring. German Shepherds tend to be considered medium-to-large-sized dogs. Males typically measure 24 to 26 inches in height at the withers, and the females are usually a bit smaller at 22 to 24 inches. However, both sexes tend to look bigger than other dogs of a similar height, as they have very long necks. Siberian Huskies are a bit smaller, measuring between 19 and 24 inches and weighing between 35 and 60 pounds on average. The females are at the smaller end of the spectrum, and the males are at the larger end. As a result, you can expect Shepskies to be around the smaller range for German Shepherds, with males ranging from 22 to 25 inches and females ranging from 20 to 24 inches in height. When it comes to their weight, males tend to be between 50 to 80 pounds, while females weigh a bit less at 40 to 70 pounds. Shepsky puppies tend to have a distinctive wolf-like appearance, with pointed ears and long noses inherited from both parents. Their eyes will either be brown or blue, and some individuals might have the distinctive dual eye color often associated with huskies. Both parent breeds have a coat ideal for colder climates, so this is something that can be expected from their offspring. They typically have a dual coat with a dense, soft undercoat and another layer of more durable guard hairs on top. As a result, while your Shepsky will almost certainly be a very intelligent dog, they might be a bit more troublesome to train than a German Shepherd. Alternatively, they might choose to entertain themselves by digging or chewing. Both breeds were created to spend a lot of time with humans, with Huskies often staying indoors with their families for warmth. This means they tend to bond quickly with their people and are very good with smaller family members though very small children should never be left unsupervised with any dog. While German Shepherds tend to have guard dog-like protective instincts, Huskies are pack animals and enjoy the company of other dogs. Losing at least some of their eyesight in later life is a common concern. German Shepherd Husky mixes are also slightly more susceptible to developing epilepsy than most other breeds, though the condition is still relatively rare. Medications exist to help manage this condition. This can be prevented with regular cleaning and maintenance. You might be able to find a Gerberian Shepsky in a local shelter to adopt for a small fee, or you can opt to find a dedicated Shepsky breeder. Do Gerberian Shepskies shed a lot? Yes, German Shepherd Husky mixes shed a lot, and there is no getting around it. And, if you are a Golden Retriever owner, then it is inevitable that your dog will need to climb those stairs. So, that begs the question: can Golden Retrievers climb stairs? Adult Golden Retrievers can climb stairs with no issues if they are in good health. However, stairs may pose a problem if the dog is older or suffering from health issues that affect mobility. Climbing stairs may also be difficult and risky for young puppies, so they should be monitored to prevent falls. Stairs are fine for healthy adult Golden Retrievers Climbing stairs at some point is almost a given for a Golden Retriever. However, there are a few instances when care must be taken, which will be discussed. Additionally, we will also explore some benefits of stairs and if there is an age restriction on when a dog should climb stairs. For pet owners with Golden Retriever puppies, stairs are an understandable concern. Often their little bodies have difficulty navigating and climbing stairs. So, understandably pet owners may wonder when at what age can a Golden Retriever puppy climb stairs. Healthy Golden Retrievers puppies can safely climb stairs at 12 weeks of age. However, Golden Retrievers can be prone to hip and elbow dysplasia. Therefore, preventing or limiting access to stairs until they are eight months of age or older can help decrease abnormal development of the joints. So, it depends. If you believe your Golden Retriever puppy will have no hip or elbow issues, then 12 weeks is the minimum safe age. However, consider that Golden Retrievers are often highly prone to hip dysplasia and have a medium risk for elbow dysplasia. Both dysplasias are inherited. The concern is that before eight months of age, the stress from stairs on the hip joints may interfere with the normal development of the sockets. Stairs can be dangerous for young puppies. If you purchased your dog from a high-level breeder, they might have assessed their breeding stock to ensure no hip and elbow issues. These dogs are often examined between four to 24 months of age and then certified as having no problems. Alternatively, if no certification is done and you trust the breeder, you can take their word that there are no issues. While hip and elbow certifications are no guarantee of an issue-free dog, it does add some degree of confidence. Our Golden Retriever did not come from parents with hip and elbow certifications. However, the breeder noted the parents had no joint issues, and we were comfortable letting Bailey on small flights of stairs two to three stairs only. However, we blocked access to any large flight of stairs, including the upstairs and basement. As a result, Bailey was almost a year old before he had access to the upstairs. I discuss some tips in the next section on how to make stairs safe, and the last tip outlines how to prevent access to stairs. Golden Retrievers are highly active and high-energy dogs. Therefore, stairs for most Golden Retrievers are of no issue and instead can be a great source of exercise. But is there any situation where climbing stairs is bad for Golden Retrievers? Stairs can be bad for Golden Retrievers if they have mobility issues or are prone to dysplasia. Golden Retrievers puppies under 12 weeks old should not be allowed on stairs due to the increased risk of falls and serious injury. However, stairs are not bad for healthy adult Golden Retrievers. So, stairs are typically acceptable for healthy Golden Retrievers at the appropriate age. Stairs become problematic when there are mobility issues such as bad knees, hips, or back. In those instances, care must be taken to prevent falls and not aggravate existing mobility issues. Due to their increased risk for hip and elbow dysplasia, it is recommended to prevent access to large flights of stairs until eight months of age or older. The other potential risk for stairs is to very young puppies less than 12 weeks old. Very young puppies do not have the size or coordination to navigate stairs. The risk of injury to their still fragile bodies is a concern. Senior Golden Retrievers with no severe mobility or health issues are okay with climbing stairs. In fact, as we will discuss in the next section, stairs can benefit Golden Retrievers, including older dogs or even ones with arthritis. Typically older dogs take the stairs slower, which is fine. Stairs are not bad for healthy adult or senior Golden Retrievers Safety Tips for Stairs However, stairs can still pose falling issues even to healthy Golden Retrievers. To ensure stairs are as safe as possible for your Golden Retriever, consider the following tips: Clean up any dirt or spills, as they have the potential for the dog to slip. Water can be incredibly slippery on hardwood floors for your dog, so make sure its paws are dry, and any water on the stairs is cleaned up. Add stair runners or carpet to hardwood stairs for extra traction. Ensure the stairs are well-lit. Dark stairs or poorly lighted stairs increase the chance of a misstep. Remove items off the stairs to prevent tripping hazards. If your dog is old or has severe mobility issues consider installing a dog ramp. If stair railings have wide openings, be careful of small puppies falling through or getting their heads stuck choking hazard. Block them off until the puppy is large enough and can no longer fit through railings. Consider installing baby gates or any blockade to prevent access to stairs for puppies when you are not around or able to supervise them. Watch for Wet Paws and Spills Hardwood can be slippery and especially when it is wet. If your dog has wet paws, hardwood becomes slippery to them. Moreover, wet feet can transfer water to stairs increasing the likelihood of a fall for all household members not just the dog. Add Traction Carpeting stairs add traction, but if that is not feasible, consider adding light-colored stair runners. They are relatively inexpensive, but they add traction and increase visibility. You could also consider adding toe grips. Well-lit stairs are safer for your Golden Retriever and you as well. Some dogs have poor eyesight, and their vision can worsen with age. So, having good visibility on stairs helps reduce missteps and potential falls. Often you can find inexpensive lighting options that are battery-operated and attach to walls, negating the need for extensive electrical wiring or hiring an electrician. Dog ramps work well for small flights of stairs such as two to three stairs only, and make it much easier for senior dogs or dogs with mobility issues to go up. Just make sure you select a dog ramp with good traction. Do not overlook stair railings. Small puppies can and have fallen through the space between stair railings. At the top of high stairs, such falls can cause severe injuries and even death. Even if the puppy is too big to fall through, it may try to stick its head through the railings. If its head gets stuck, this could become a choking hazard. Puppies can fall through or get stuck and choke in stair railings. Be careful. A temporary solution that works well is cutting strips of cardboard and attaching them across the bottom of the railing so the puppy cannot fall through. Once your dog is big enough to no longer fit, remove the cardboard. Old Amazon boxes, cereal boxes, or pretty much any old cardboard will do, and it is inexpensive. We had an issue with the railings when my curious Golden Retriever Bailey was a puppy. As the above picture shows, Bailey could squeeze through the railings, so we ran pieces of cardboard along the bottom to prevent access and falls. Block Stairs Additionally, consider gates to block stairs if there is a potential for falls when you are not home or the puppy is out of sight. The images below illustrate a gate we placed on the stairs to the basement, just off the TV room. It was too easy of an opportunity for Bailey to get to the stairs, and it was dark, so we blocked it off plus the cat sleeps down there. Our homemade gate to prevent Bailey from accessing the stairs For the staircase going upstairs, we just rolled his feeder container and a chair in front. It was enough to block him, and it cost us nothing. As a precaution, Golden Retrievers should wait to climb stairs until they are eight months of age or older. Doing so helps mitigate any potential for stairs to aggravate the normal growth of joints. Once the Golden Retriever is of an appropriate age, stairs are fine and present little issues. In fact, climbing stairs can actually provide some benefits. Some benefits of stairs include: Stairs can build strength in the legs, back muscles, shoulders, and hips. Climbing stairs can increase the range of motion, including in those dogs with arthritis. Obviously, access to hills is much better than stairs for the benefits listed. Hills provide the same resistance with less stress on joints. As well, the gradual grade of hills makes falls less likely. However, for a healthy Golden Retriever taking the stairs at home provides minor issues for an appropriate aged Golden Retriever. Additionally, stairs also help strengthen muscles and improve coordination. In turn, increasing muscle strength helps build coordination and keeps tendons strong, which helps preserve healthy joint movement. In fact, walking UP stairs can be a great way to help improve active range of motion, muscle strength, and proprioception the awareness of the position and movement of the body. Source However, CARE cautions that walking downwards on stairs is problematic due to the increased force on the front legs and the need for more control to go down slowly. If your Golden Retriever is arthritic, consider hills with gentle inclines and declines hills are less stress-inducing than stairs. At home, consider using dog ramps. CARE also suggests adding carpeting or runners on stairs and using a harness to support an arthritic dog to help it feel more secure when navigating stairs. So, while stairs can be an excellent supplement for Golden Retrievers, they should not be the primary source of exercise. Instead, take your dog for a long walk, and if there are some soft hills included, all the better. Adequate amounts of walking, even on flat surfaces, will benefit your Golden Retriever more — both for developing muscle and tendons and its heart. Swimming is also a great activity for dogs with arthritis or joint issues. Final Thoughts Generally speaking, most healthy Golden Retriever adults will have no issue with stairs. However, stairs should be avoided for ALL puppies under 12 weeks. If you have concerns about hip or elbow dysplasia or other joint problems, keep your Golden Retriever off the stairs until eight months old, at a minimum. After eight months of age, your Golden Retriever should have no issues running up and downstairs. However, make sure stairs are not overly slippery and are well-lighted and clear of obstructions. Lastly, start your puppy off on smaller staircases so they can learn in a safer and less intimidating environment. Avoid large staircases where your puppy might fear looking down such a long distance. In addition, consider that a puppy is more likely to be injured if it falls down 12 stairs versus two or three, so start them slowly. As such, we kept Bailey off these until he was a year old. Most Golden Retrievers learn to climb stairs very quickly as puppies. The key is to not allow them on large staircases that pose a greater risk of them becoming fearful or injured. Instead, start them on small staircases, and when they are old enough, you can let them climb stairs as their heart desires. Guardian Family must maintain Guardian dog at proper healthy weight and provide regular daily mental and physical exercise. Guardians must communicate any abnormal health or behavior to us immediately. Guardian dogs must be fed and provided a high quality diet from Paw Tree. All trainings will be at the cost of the Guardian family. In the event of death of the Breeder, this contract will remain intact until end date, and breeding rights taken over by the new ownership of Chestnut Hill Labradoodles, LLC. In the event that a major life event occurs including immediate family member death or severe medical illness in which the Guardian Family is no longer able to care for the dog and still under contract, the dog will be returned to Chestnut Hill Labradoodles and contract will be nullified. Transfer of Ownership: Proven Breeder When Breeder, in its sole and absolute discretion, determines that the dog shall no longer be used for breeding purposes, Breeder shall transfer ownership to Guardian at no cost to Guardian. In such circumstances, Guardian must immediately notify Breeder and provide a detailed, written statement of the circumstances that render future performance impossible. If Breeder does take possession of the dog pursuant to this section, Guardian will not be entitled to any compensation from Breeder nor be obligated for any future care of the dog but shall not be absolved or released from any past violations of this Agreement nor damages sustained by Breeder as a result thereof. Neither party may assign, transfer, or subcontract any obligations or rights under this Agreement without the prior written consent of the other party. No changes, modifications or waivers to this Agreement will be effective unless in writing and signed by both parties. In the event that any provision of this Agreement is determined to be illegal or unenforceable, that provision will be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary so that this Agreement shall otherwise remain in full force and effect and enforceable. This Agreement may be executed in any number of counterparts and such counterparts together shall constitute the same instrument. This Health Guarantee does not include minor illnesses and health issues such as colds, allergies, dermatitis, mange, internal or external parasites or umbilical hernias. Insufficient Care. Buyer agrees that it will not surrender the Puppy to a shelter and that it will not sell, give, or release the Puppy to an individual or family, pet shop, retail store, dog dealer, animal testing facility, research facility, or an agent for any such business or facility. Additionally, Buyer agrees that it will not euthanize the Puppy under any circumstances without prior written consent of Seller and instead will return to Seller. If the Puppy is returned within the first thirty 30 days, only half of the Purchase Price will be refunded after the Puppy has been placed in its new home. If the Puppy is returned after the thirty 30 days no money will be refunded to the Buyer. The Buyer pays for all travel expenses back to Seller. Puppy mouthing and biting is a normal stage of puppy development and will not be considered justifiable cause for return of the Puppy. Additionally, temperament behavioral issues will not be considered justifiable cause for return of the Puppy; unless proof of regular obedience training by a certified professional trainer is provided and the Puppy is under four 4 months of age at the time of return. Seller takes reasonable measures to provide Buyer with a happy, healthy, thriving Puppy. Non-Transferability of Health Guarantee. Any transfer or assignment of this Health Guarantee is void. Visits to Veterinarians. The puppy will not be taken to places other dogs frequent, such as pet stores, dog parks, kennels, grooming salons, etc. Companion Purpose; Mandatory Spaying or Neutering. In the event, the Seller stops breeding, no replacement puppies shall be given, and any obligations of providing a replacement puppy is limited by the supply of available puppies that Seller has on hand at any given time. Annual Vaccinations and Protective Medications. Buyer guarantees that upon receiving the Puppy, Buyer will keep the Puppy in good health with yearly vaccinations, heartworm protection, and any other necessary procedures to ensure the good health of the Puppy. Governing Law and Venue. This Agreement shall be governed by, and construed, enforced and interpreted in accordance with, the substantive laws without regard to its conflicts of laws provisions of the State of Texas. If satisfied with the Veterinarian report, Buyer will retain possession of the Dog and hold Breeder harmless and not liable for any further medical conditions of the Dog. The Breeder agrees to accept a return of the Puppy at any time and for any reason, for the life of the Puppy. Buyer agrees to screen new owners before sale, release or transfer of Puppy. Our return policy is as follows: For non-emergencies, Buyer agrees to retain Puppy until the Breeder or Buyer can find a new home. This is so that the Puppy only need make one adjustment. All warranties in this contract are non-transferable and become void if ownership of the dog transfers. Please make a copy of this contract for your records and return original. The Seller will reimburse no veterinary or shipping costs. This diagnosis of genetic disease must be provided to the seller in writing with the necessary ancillary documentation. Should the dog be found to have a serious life-altering genetic disease, the seller will provide a replacement from a litter within one year of the claim or refund the purchase price of the puppy. The buyer is required to produce all veterinarian records with the microchip and description of the dog clearly marked, and provide them to the seller. If a puppy replacement option is chosen, the buyer understands that the seller may not have a puppy ready for immediate replacement and may have to wait. The buyer and seller will work together to find a suitable replacement puppy from an upcoming litter. If the Buyer cannot agree to the choices of puppies available within one year of the claim, the warranty is void. This warranty does not cover teeth, dental issues, hernias, allergies, or any sequelae resulting from desexing surgeries. Should the dog be found to be in poor health of a very serious nature, the seller will provide the buyer with a replacement either from the same litter or another litter, or refund the purchase price, not including shipping; however, the seller retains the right to select either option as a remedy. Records must specify the dog clearly by microchip scan and logging of chip number. Veterinarians must certify the accuracy of the records if required by the seller. The parties agree that this contract represents the Full and Final Agreement between the parties and that no other representations, either oral or written have or relied upon for the purposes of this agreement regarding the dog described therein. The parties further agree that no changes in this contract shall be binding upon either of them without written modifications signed by both parties. Both parties agree that the county seat of Riverside County, California shall be the proper jurisdictional venue for this agreement. Upon execution of this contract, all normative veterinary care and its associated costs are the sole and exclusive responsibility of the buyer. The buyer agrees to maintain this dog in good health, provide routine preventative health care, annual check-ups including but not limited to inoculation, internal and external parasites, and preventative medicine. Complete veterinarian records must be provided to the breeder for any request involving a refund or replacement. If any of the above preventative care has not been provided the health warrantee will be void. In the event of the death of the puppy, the buyer agrees to preserve the body until arrangements can be made for an autopsy. In the event of veterinarian recommended euthanasia of the puppy, the buyer agrees to take no action until the seller has approved such action, in any case, the seller again agrees to preserve the body until arrangements can be made for an autopsy. The buyer agrees to provide the seller with a written report with any necessary photographs to substantial any claims of defects. The cost of the autopsy is to be paid by the buyer subject to reimbursement upon determination of cause as a result of a seller's defect. An additional warranty against hereditary orthopedic defects including debilitating hip dysplasia is provided for two years after the date of sale. The Buyer will take the dog to either group or private training classes by the time the dog is five months of age. The Buyer will feed the dog only a premium quality dog food. The Breeder recommends Puppy Now and Acana and also a balanced raw diet. Pet food sold in grocery stores does not constitute a premium pet food. Dogs need real food not just kibble. The Buyer will not allow the dog to become overweight or allow repetitive, rigorous exercise during the first year of development.

My name is Herbie. I recently came in to rescue and turned 2 on November 14th. A nice family "rescued" me from a very bad situation. Most of them having nothing to do with problems the dog has, but rather with those of the person surrendering the dog. Many folks think dogs who end up at shelters or in rescues are all genetically and behaviorally inferior. But it is not uncommon for very expensive, well-bred dogs to outlive their usefulness or novelty with folks who bought them on an impulse and no longer want to take responsibility for them. Other reasons older dogs become homeless: death of a guardian, not enough time to properly care for the dog, change in work schedule, a new baby, a need to move to a place where dogs are not allowed, kids going off to college, allergies, change in "lifestyle", or even a prospective spouse doesn't like dogs. Question: What advantages do older dogs have over puppies or young dogs? Answer: Nala Older dogs who are offered for adoption by shelters or rescue agencies generally have had some training both in obedience and house manners. Some dogs, due to the confusion and upset of being uprooted and finding themselves in a chaotic shelter environment may, temporarily, forget their housetraining. Inevitably, once established in their new home, they remember. Older dogs have learned what "no" means and how to leave the furniture, carpets, shoes, and other "chewables" alone. If they hadn't learned that, they wouldn't have gotten to be "older" dogs. They have been "socialized" and learned what it takes to be part of a "pack" and to get along with humans and, in most cases, other dogs and in some other cases cats as well. Older dogs, especially those who have once known it, appreciate love and attention and quickly learn what's expected of them to gain and keep that love and attention. Older dogs know how to let you finish the newspaper, sitting calmly next to you, while your workday stress flows away and your blood pressure lowers. They are also instant companions, ready for hiking, riding in the car, walking on leash, fetching, etc. Finally, older dogs are a "known commodity. Question: Aside from any advantages an older dog has, is there any good reason to adopt an older dog instead of a puppy, who has his whole life ahead of him? By adopting an older dog, we can make a statement about compassion and the value of all life at all ages as well as register a protest against the indiscriminate and inhumane breeding of dogs, whether it is for profit or to "teach the children about birth. You can give that older dog the best years of his life while at the same time bringing a wonderful addition into your family. Another consideration is the larger goal of making the U. If a dog has been in a shelter or kennel, the stresses of such an experience may cause him to be confused and disoriented for quite some time. Some dogs forget or are confused about their housetraining. With care, patience, and a kind, understanding, loving attitude, just about any dog will come around after a while. It may be a few days, a few weeks, or a few months. In our own experience, we've had dogs who are right "at home" as soon as they walk in the door and others who have needed a couple of weeks to make a basic adjustment and then became more and more comfortable over the course of several months. Question: Is there anything special I will need to do during the dog's "adjustment" period? Answer: Oklahoma Again, this will depend on the individual dog. In general, with a dog of any age, it is a good idea to set aside a period of several weeks during which you can spend more time than usual in reassuring the dog, establishing good communication with the dog, and creating the special bond that will ensure a good future together. Question: I just lost my old dog. What if I lose another soon after I adopt him? Answer: Kudos Grief is a very personal matter. Some people feel that giving a home to an older dog in need is a tribute to their former dog and actually eases their pain. Also, knowing that adoption has saved a dog from euthanasia and will allow her quality time for whatever period she has left, often enables people to focus on the positives and to deal better with loss. Consider also that there are never any guarantees about length of life with any dog. Quality of time together can matter a great deal more than quantity. Answer: Cassiopeia "Both the human and the dog need someone in their lives. Many of the same ailments and general problems are faced by both man and dog. One devastating problem is losing the person closest to them. For the human senior, the loss of that lifetime mate is a tragic experience. The loss of a lifetime owner can be equally difficult for the canine senior. It's hard to make the adjustment to living without a lifetime companion. Both the human and the dog need someone in their lives and often the best decision is to put these two seniors together. Puppies are darling and so much fun to watch at play, but they are also a lot of work. Much like grandchildren they are best when you can choose when to have them around and then when to send them home with their parents. And they can be dangerous around someone who does not move quickly any more. A senior can trip over a fast moving puppy and both can be seriously hurt. Housebreaking takes a lot of time and patience. Puppies are active and into everything and they can do a lot of damage to a well cared for home. Any puppy requires a lot of time and training. Their lives are moving at a different speed from a senior. The senior dog is at the same place in his life that the human senior is in his. If given love and caring, they can make the change to a new home with few problems. Their needs are usually simple and they are happy with a quiet and uncomplicated life. Remember, they are often set in their ways and not interested in learning a lot of new things. That doesn't mean they can't learn, just that they can be more set in their ways. They also need a reason to get up in the morning and things to do to put the fun back in their world, but their lives also need to be kept simple. Many senior dogs have been loving, well-behaved dogs all their lives and now, through no fault of their own, they are alone. They may still have several healthy years ahead of them and no one to share this time with. There are no guarantees on their health of longevity, but we can't offer any guarantees either: just love, loyalty, companionship and a reason to live. Many of us love our pets so deeply that we think that if we get an older dog it will die soon and we will just have to grieve again. While there is some truth in this, remember the old saying that "it is better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all. Imagine you just moved to a new area in your senior years and your neighbors said, "She's just going to die in a few years, I don't want to be friends with her. Quality of time together and companionship can be wonderful for both the senior dog and the senior citizen. Give it a chance! Yuengling If you are thinking of taking in a senior dog, try to get as much information as possible about the dog and its prior owner. Always be sure to get a health check by a veterinarian. It gives you a baseline to work with and will let you know if the dog needs any special medication or care. Sometimes the news is better than you think. Old does not have to mean sick, weak or infirm. Many older dogs are very healthy well into their teens. Important things to check are eyes, ears and teeth. Most dogs over ten years of age do not see as well as they did when they were younger. If they were humans, they would need reading glasses. Your veterinarian can tell you if your dog is getting cataracts serious enough to strongly limit his vision. Dogs do quite well with very limited sight, but you must be aware of dangers that they cannot see. Older dogs sometimes do not hear well either. If both hearing and sight are diminished, the senior dog cannot protect itself from many things that could be a danger to it. Being aware of this can help the senior dog stay safe. Ear infections are more common in older dogs and this should be watched for so they can receive prompt treatment. Teeth are another important thing to watch. Many older dogs have dirty teeth that need to be cleaned by the veterinarian. In some cases, bad teeth need to be pulled. Uncared-for teeth can lead to general infections in dogs that can affect their overall health. Older dogs need to be kept warm in the winter and cool in the summer. They need to be loved by someone who understands the simple problems of life and realizes that your senior years can be some of your best. If you are considering a canine senior, plan ahead before bringing the dog home. Look around your home and make it as dog-proof as possible. As most older dogs don't see as well as they did when they were younger, it is important to remove anything that might be a danger. Take off your glasses and look around. That's probably how it will look to your dog. Put water and food dishes where they will be easy to find. Until the dog is used to your home, barricade off the back part of your house. Even a dog that has always been well housebroken can have an accident. This happens most often with the older dog when they can't find their way to the door. If they are confined to one or two rooms where you are, it is much easier to get them started out correctly. Be sure to continue with the same food that the dog has been eating. It would also be a good idea to put your dog on bottled water until it has settled in its new home. Any change in food or water can cause diarrhea. If possible, find out what hour your dog got up and when it went out for the last time at night. You want to make changes slowly. Like yourself, your senior dog has a set pattern to his life and can be upset if too much is changed all at once. When a couple of weeks have passed it will seem as though you have always been together. Both lives will be enriched. Remember that your dog is used to someone else's life patterns and must adjust to yours as you must adjust to his. The work and patience you put into it will be well worth it. Try to get any of your dog's things from his old home: dog bed, water or food dishes or toys. This will help make the transition easier. If it is wintertime, be sure to keep your dog dry and warm. If he is short-coated, have him sleep with a sweater. In the summer be sure to keep him cool and see that he has lots of fresh water. Senior dogs need to be kept indoors at night for both their comfort and protection. Be sure this is acceptable to you before getting your dog. Older dogs still need regular grooming. Toenails must be kept short as well as ears cleaned. Many are prone to dry skin and need medicated baths on a weekly basis. All dogs must be kept free from fleas, ticks and internal parasites. These can be especially hard on the older dog. For flea protection it is safer to use organic flea shampoos rather than the harsher chemical based ones. Regular grooming will also help you find any new growths or other skin problems. These are common on older dogs and are usually not a problem, but should be watched to see if they grow or change in appearance. Should this happen, it should be checked by a veterinarian to see if treatment is necessary. Some older dogs have thyroid problems and need to take medication for it. Some older spayed females can have bladder control problems. This can usually be treated by your veterinarian. Just as the human senior has a few aches and pains and inconveniences, so does the senior dog. Most of us just learn to live with it and so do they. The senior dog should not be pushed aside just because of its age. Most still have several years to give the caring person who can see past the gray muzzle. If you are a senior citizen, consider a senior dog as your next "best friend. Answer: Glitzy "The most sought after of all rescue pugs is the 'two-year-old fawn female. And the wait for one can be substantial, often discouraging people from adopting a rescue at all. But why a 'two year old? Why not three years old, or one year old, or some other age? At two years old, it can be assumed that a dog will have a good, long time ahead of it. At one year of age it is 'still a puppy' with all of the problems and difficulties that description brings to mind. At three years old, most people assume that the animal has fewer than 10 years left and don't want to think of the heartbreak of losing it so quickly. Once an animal turns five, it is nearly impossible to place quickly. And, if turned into a shelter, is almost certainly guaranteed a quick euthanization. Most shelters are so overcrowded, the only practical solution for them is to destroy the 'unadoptable' animals. How many animals were destroyed last year for the crime of being over five years old? Last month? Last week? When was the last time you saw an animal in a shelter over three years old, for that matter? One of the reasons is that just about any dog who has reached the age of five or more has learned what "No" means. In order to be acceptable in human company, he has also learned generally what is expected of him. He is calmer and quieter than a puppy, and so he is able to focus better on what you are trying to teach him. He has learned about dominance and has a firm grasp of the concept of "alpha" dog. As an older dog, he is not trying to prove his dominance over humans, and, in general, he is ready to fit himself into his human family "pack," and to do whatever is necessary to make that fit as comfortable as possible. There are different schools of thought when it comes to dog training. Some trainers believe in the use of verbal praise and other types of non-food rewards for training. The most current thinking, however, is that the use of a food-based reward system lends itself better to the concept of "positive reinforcement" and avoids the negative "correction" or "punishment" that is a component of some systems of training. Please be aware that your dog can strangle himself on his choke collar. We have had reports of dogs left in their crates overnight whose choke collars got caught in the bars of the crate and would not release. The dogs slowly choked to death. Decide whether a choke collar really is necessary for your dog. Expert advice is to eliminate it, if at all possible. In the past, dogs who were meant for high-level, competitive "obedience" work were trained using very harsh, punitive methods. Although these methods are not widely practiced today, there may still be a few stragglers around who believe in them. The Senior Dogs Project strongly advises against those training methods for any dog, but we particularly recommend against it in the case of an older dog.
