The morning feeding should be after you've taken the pup outside, let it have it's pee and poo, and a little play session. Time the middle feeding at a halfway point between the morning and evening feedings or as closely to that as your schedule allows. After puppy is toilet trained.We have found that "free feeding" a well trained puppy one that knows who the leader is prevents bloating, prevents gorging of food, prevents fussy eaters well the list goes on and on on the benefits. No matter what your Vet says or believes, our Poodles do not and will not over eat! Chicken products from China causing intermittent vomiting and Diarrhea and killing dogs. Glycerin in dehydrated jerky type treats, dehydrated Chicken Breasts, dog treats, greenies. According to the FDA, they have found that dogs who consume varying amounts of Glycerin can exhibit the following symptoms: decreased appetite, decreased activity, vomiting, diarrhea, increased water consumption urination. With blood tests, the dog may have an increased BUN, Blood glucose which is evidence of glycerin's negative affects on the kidneys. In hundreds of dogs kidney failure and death has been reported. A puppy does not need treats. Praise and play work wonders to motivate. Keep in mind that treats are not a substitute for a meal… we use teeny tiny pieces… We don't give our pups or dogs treats routinely. If I wish to bribe my Poodle then I will resort to chicken wieners or sardines. Another odd phenomenon we see so many times, is that anxious owners, or owners with stomach or digestive issues themselves, have this same disorder manifest within their puppies. Do not make food or treat time an anxious time. Do not get them worked up over food or treats. NEVER keep switching foods for different flavors or brands, this creates a nightmare of a fussy eater A dog views food as a part of survival. Dogs do not use food to feed emotions the way us humans do. In summer when there is extreme heat and especially humidity, it is not uncommon to see dogs eat grass to settle their tummies and sometimes vomit as a result. Dogs can easily get overheated, so if you hear "humidity warnings" don't go outside to play with your puppy wait until it gets cooler in the day or evening, to venture outside for a game of play. Please always remember, that cool, fresh water should be available at all times except during crating times. If you restrict water puppy can develop a Bladder or Urinary Tract Infection. At first offer your puppy about 2 cups of food. Your puppy should always have kibble left over in their bowl at the end of your feeding time. Do not starve your puppy just because you are following the directions on the bag or your vet said to feed "x" amount… Let the pup have access to the food for about 20 minutes. What they have not eaten after this time, you take away until next meal time. Continue this through the scheduled feeding times. As poodle puppies grow, so too do their appetites. If your puppy consistently finishes all of the food offered during the feeding time, increase the amount of food, just removing the contents after 20 minutes. Growing puppies can eat what seems to be a phenomenal amount. We have seen so many of our adults basically starving with hips sticking out and just too thin because owners want to control their dog's food intake! The heart is a big muscle that will be adversely effected including but not limited to rhythm irregularities Starving your Poodle sorry I mean "controlling your poodle's diet will also cause GI upset and sensitivity. Your poodle should eat enough that it is leaving food behind in the dish. This Poodle's body would be eating muscle in order to survive. The heart is a muscle. There is no excuse for this. Free feeding also aids in avoiding bloat and or torsion like we do. At some point between weeks your puppy will no longer require three feedings a day. A lot of puppies will let you know when that is. They will begin to pick at one of the meals. If you find your puppy is consistently not interested in a meal often the mid feeding , take the same amount of food you have been feeding in a day and divide it into two feedings. Puppy is eating the same amount, just twice a day instead of three times a day. We feel this aids in preventing bloat and making fussy eaters. In we decided to try our dogs and puppies on this food as it is poultry and grain free and limited ingredient and more dogs of all breeds, have been having sensitivity to poultry and or diets with grain. New as of - the public found out that a lot of dog foods were being filled with Whey acid by-product of the Greek Yogurt and that this is counted as Protein It could be coincidence however there are more and more puppies of all breeds and mutts having GI upset and bladder issues, so we tend to not believe in coincidences. Since starting on this food our pups have not had loose stools and their bladders have been healthier. We can't deny all the amazing reviews of this quality product. If puppy eats all their food in the alotted time then you should be feeding more. Unlike humans, or other less "refined" dog breeds, Poodles will not over eat. So make sure that puppy has enough food. Do not substitute food with giving treats all day long either. How much should your puppy weigh? My standard for my pups, which are over 8 wks. If a puppy is 8 weeks old it should weigh around 8 lbs. This formula is fairly accurate until the dog reaches the age of 3 months. Basically your puppy should have left over kibble in their bowl every meal time during the alloted time limit. If the kibble is all gone in the first few minutes, just add more kibble and know for next time the proper amount. The following amounts are for EACH feeding. Do not worry if there is food left over. Food and Weights for Puppy 7 weeks. Category : Puppies When you take your puppy home usually around weeks of age they will need to eat 3 or 4 times a day. At 8 weeks old we feed small meals 4 times a day at 7 am, 11 am, 2 pm and then at 5 pm. We allow them free access to water until 7 pm in the evening. An alternative is to feed 3 times a day at 7 am, 12 noon and at 5 pm. If your puppy is hungry split the meals to 4 times a day. By the time they are 10 weeks old they can go to 3 meals a day. If your puppy feels thin you can feel all the ribs and backbone easily increase the amount of food. If your puppy feels fat you should be able to feel some of the ribs reduce the amount of food. Some puppies are very active and burn up every calorie they eat, some are prone to being a little rounder and their food intake needs to be carefully monitored. Research has shown that dogs that are not overfeed have a much lower risk of developing hip dysplasia. Keep your puppy thin and healthy. We do not recommend free feeding of puppies as this makes it more difficult to housebreak your poodle and regulate their diet. Better to move to free feeding after housebreaking if you choose to. It is harder to monitor how much food they eat when free feeding and a glutunous puppy may quickly become fat. Remember a thin puppy is less likely to develop hip dysplasia. We strongly encourage you to keep your puppy on the same food we provide for the first month. Both coccidia and giardia may live in the gut of a healthy poodle and they never have an outbreak. When their bodies are stressed they are more likely to develop an unhealthy balance and the result may be a sick puppy. Moving to a new home, leaving their Mother and siblings and diet changes are all stressful. We encourage you to make as few changes as possible to your puppies diet the first month. Changing to a different dog food — go slowly. It may take a month or longer to switch foods. If at any point your puppy develops an upset stomach go back to the level of food mix that they were doing well on. Should your puppy develop bloody diarrhea take them to the veterinarian, they have most likely developed gastroenteritis and may need some medication or possibly fluids. Go slowly, new protein sources require time for the stomach to adjust. This is true not only in puppies but also adults. We continue to feed our puppies 3 meals a day until they are 6 months old. Our belief is that in keeping food moving through the puppy it allows for better consistent growth and health. At 6 months of age we start to feed 2 times a day with snacks throughout the day. We continue to feed our dogs 2 times a day throughout their life. We feed snacks several times a day to both puppies and adults which may be carrots, green beans, eggs or chicken or pieces of their kibble. We feed our poodles both kibble and home cooked food. Sable White Though all these colors are standard for this dog breed, not all of them are widely bred. Breeders choose to avoid colors such as liver, white and blue, despite being standard colors. So, if you have your heart set on one of the ones I just mentioned, then you may need to spend extra time searching for a reputable breeder. But even with this common color, there is plenty of room for variation. The tan fur can range from deeper hues to a shade that almost approaches silver along the edges. The black color usually appears as a saddle-like pattern along the back and can vary quite a bit in size. Something to keep in mind is that GSDs born with this pattern usually begin life with a darker shade and slowly lighten as they mature. Darker, especially black, coloration is recessive in the German Shepherd. So if both the parents display the black and tan coloring, then the pup is more likely to as well. Sable German Shepherd via Instagram: konathesablegsd The most common color seen in the German Shepherd breed is the sand color. As a matter of fact, this opens the door for quite a few color combinations. While other colors of this breed are largely defined by single colors, or bicolor ratios, sable dogs are a bit more homogenous. That is, the coloring is more even throughout without distinct areas of one color or another. Within this coloring, the shades can range from lighter greys to darker colors, such as more grey or shades approaching red and brown. If you were to look at any single hair of a German Shepherd with this coloring, you might notice that their hair can have two to three colors on each strand. As such, they are much more popular in the work line or as pets. They are especially popular in the K-9 units of a police force. Bicolor German Shepherd via Instagram: asulkancrew At first glance, this may seem like a variation of the black and tan German Shepherd. And there is some debate about whether bicolor German Shepherds are simply displaying a pattern or a distinct color on its own. A bicolor German Shepherd will have black and tan colors, but the black with be much more dominant here. Almost the entire body will be black, with only a few areas such as the legs or chest displaying fur that ranges from tan to brown. At birth, the two-tone German Shepherd will be hard to distinguish from its solid black siblings. In fact, it may take months to start seeing changes. However, an indicator of whether the puppy will grow up to be a bicolor dog is if it has some brown color under the tail. Black German Shepherd via Instagram: trublueaussiedogz The gene for a black coat is recessive in German Shepherds, so an entirely black dog will be somewhat hard to find. Black GSDs might actually have a bit of brown fur on their toes or feet, and even some hints of white on their chest. While less common than other colorations, a black German Shepherd is by no means rare. There will be some breeders that hike up the price based solely on the idea that these dogs are rare or special. And while, yes, they are absolutely beautiful and worth taking home, just be sure the price is fair and do some market research beforehand. The white GSD is downright gorgeous. The white coloring really gives the dog a wolf-like look and lends it an air of mystery. They may often get confused for an athletic, slimmed-down Samoyed, but their poise and calmness begs to differ. Plenty of people, The Smart Canine included, see this coloring as one of the more desirable for a German Shepherd. And, in any case, the AKC does allow them to be registered, but simply not as a show dog. For most owners, this is fine because who really has the time to show their dogs? Biology and evolution did well here by pairing these two genes. Liver-colored German Shepherds tend to range from lighter browns to darker and warmer colors. And in some cases, even bordering on red. The coat can also have hints of other colors in it, smoothly blending in with the brown, here and there. There are three variations of the liver coloring: liver and tan, liver and white, and solid liver. The good news is that all three of these are recognized by the American Kennel Club. Blue German Shepherd via Instagram: titanbluegsd Contrary to what some people say, blue coloring in a German Shepherd is not an indication of fault and or poor health unlike blue French Bulldogs. The reasoning for this belief could be due to the fact that blue coloring might indicate temperament or health problems in other breeds. For example, some blue dogs may have hormone or skin issues. We call this condition, Color Dilution Alopecia. However with the German Shepherd, this is definitely not the case. Plenty of breeders purposely breed for this color because of its rarity. Coming from a recessive gene, blue coloration does not occur often without specifically being bred for it. While you might not have too hard a time finding a blue German Shepherd nowadays, be prepared to dig deeper in your pockets. Their scarcity can push up the price and will vary from breeder to breeder. In a way, the coat pattern of the red and black German Shepherd looks almost like a brindle or merle. The black is not limited to those areas of the body — it depends on the dog and the parents. Most of the time, color distribution may vary from dog to dog. However, they will typically have a silver base on the bottom of their body and black on the top half on their body. The hue of black can range from a dark gray to a deep black. In some instances, the German Shepherd may have silver with multiple shades of black on the coat. Instead of the metallic-like silver coloring, the black and cream has an off-white cream color. However, this cream color can vary from dog to dog, but usually has a hint of yellow to it. It really depends. If you like how it looks, whether white, dark, or blue, then you should choose accordingly. Unfortunately, white German Shepherds will be out of the picture, despite its aesthetic appeal. Either way, coloration in a German Shepherd covers a wide range of options, and each of them are simply just colors. Merle Pure White A lot of people are arguing that the purely white German Shepherd is a crossbreed while others are labeling them as Albinos and some are even saying white GSDs can be healthy purebreds. Apart from whether or not purely white GSDs exist as crossbreeds and possibly as purebreds, Albinism is definitely a possibility. Solid Gray Unlike sable or the black and silver GSD, the solid gray German Shepherd does not exist in the show or even the working line world. In the show ring, solid gray is considered to be a serious fault. Many people make the mistake to refer to their sable or silver GSD as gray though, so be aware of that. Liver Liver-colored dogs are often seen with a pink nose. This brownish coat color is moving somewhere along the lines of the tan, red, and cream shades. Solid red As the word suggests, this coat type is not black and red but a fully red German Shepherd instead. Isabella types can be very light and might just be a ploy to disguise a white or even albinistic dog. These colors are extremely unusual among German Shepherds and not commonly seen and not desirable either in most cases. Spotted Black and White Another major pet website that features what seems to be a different breed under this color type. There is no spotted black and white German Shepherd in the sense that this color type implies. Australian Kelpies do have this beautiful coat color though. Black and white GSDs, some mixed with brown, as well as sable patterns with the resemblance to a Panda. Merle The merle gene does not exist among German Shepherd lines in a natural form. German Shepherd Coat Types All these colors come in various coat types. Depending on your climate, you might opt for the shorter or longer version. A double coat is typical and consists of a dense outer coat and a softer undercoat. While the breed is generally easy to maintain, weekly brushing is required. Shedding season can be a disaster for some dog owners, especially those with long-haired German Shepherds. Henry understands concepts such as get your toy and let's go outside. He knows and follows these commands: sit, stay, come, down, drop it, leave it, go to your place. He is making good progress on wait and off. He loves playing outdoors and in water, belly rubs, hugs, praise, training, ice, and peanut butter. He needs plenty of exercise- ideally, a fenced in yard or an owner who is committed to walking him or setting up play dates with dogs of similar energy. His original owner attended training and taught Henry basic commands and walking in public places such as large hardware and pet stores for socialization. He walks fairly well on a leash, but does pull when excited. I am approaching 70 and continue leash training in the fenced back yard, but do not feel strong enough to walk and hold on to him in busy public places. He does not have access to bedrooms. He likes riding in the car and does not get sick, but he really wants to be with the driver, so he needs a seatbelt or sturdy partition so that he does not wiggle his way up front. He visits with extended family and is affectionate and follows basic commands with them. Henry is house broken and does not chew or destroy property. He may gather shoes and other items if they are left around, but they are not damaged. Henry's ability to live with other dogs and children is dependent on the owner's continued training of him. It is important to keep in mind that although he is looks big like an adult dog, he has puppy energy and will jump when greeting people he hasnt seen for a while and needs redirection. He is energetic, playful, and does not tire easily. They have had lots of attention and I am lucky to have the time at the moment to spend with them and look after them properly. Forever homes are required for them. Anyway, he still comes out this way for a few clients so he agreed to work with us again. He started last week and he has progressed so well already.I have progressed too, I had forgotten more than I like to admit. The only thing that I am questioning is if I am feeding him too much??? He was ten weeks yesterday and weighs exactly 16 pounds. He is still just strictly on the Natures Domain. I didn't want to change too much of anything at the beginning. I am feeding him one cup of food, three times a day at six hour intervals. He looks great to me, but of course acts like he could eat double what I am feeding him. I am trying really hard not to look into those big brown eyes and give in and give him more! The doctor had a formula but thought that you would be more of an expert in that area than he would since you raise them so he wants me to check with you just to be sure. To make a long story short, the end result was that he had a very large nearly cantalope size splenic tumor which ruptured ultimatley causing his untimely passing. He was playing and being his usual self at 8 in the morning and not even 12 hours later, he took his last breath. This came from our vet. As soon as Ace began to mope around we called our vet right away. They told us to bring him in right then, which we did and they got right down to business.
