Tucson On an odd rainy day in February, I met up with Cheryl at the vet's office to meet Valentino, when I saw the puppies I could not decide which one so I adopted them both as love is not for sale. There were only 3 in their litter and Romeo was already reserved. Teddy and Valentino named so due to being born on Valentines Day are the love that we needed in our family. Let me tell you, sometimes they are very mischievous, rambunctious and can be down right stubborn. With that being said, I would not trade them for the world. Valentino is the leader, he has gotten into the sink and stole a defrosting London Broil. How did he get into the sink? Maybe he stood on Teddy's back. I can imagine them doing this, they are THAT intelligent. Well dinner was a little late but I was more concerned about his sensitive stomach. Teddy loves being on my white Italian leather sofa, he loves it so much that he smelled something probably crumbs and tore a hole right into the shoulder of it. I spent a Saturday sewing it up, while arguing with Teddy. He has claimed this sofa as his own. This is the love that I speak of. No matter what they get into, just one look at those sad eyes and I am a big bag of mush. They are the cleanest babies I have ever seen. They love to play in the mud and I let them! They are my babies. They are so smart, I lock them out of the doggie door and they will clean themselves, when finished they knock on the door. They loves kids! They use to jump on them but I have trained them that babies cry. So now they walk up and allow them to pet them while they wag their stumps and drool thank goodness Walmart has an endless supply of baby wipes. They are very territorial,nthis is our fault. We have kept them all to ourselves. We love them so much. Cheryl, the cost that we paid for them is nothing to the joy that they have brought us. The wagging stump waiting for us after a bad day, they love us unconditionally, to hear them "talking back" when one of us tells them to " Go to bed", it is priceless. Boxers After we bought our first house together, Mitchell and I talked about getting a dog. We both had Boston Terriers as kids, but Mitchell was enamored of Boxers. Whenever we were out driving and would see one, he would insist on stopped to look at it and, if possible, to play with it. So we decided to get a Boxer. We started looking at want-ads, found a breeder and when to check out a new litter. We picked out a young mail pup. We were scheduled to pick it up just before Christmas, so we planned that Phillip and I would pick the puppy up and Mitchell would pretend that it was a surprise Christmas present. We picked up Butzer, took him to the vet for his shots, and presented him to Mitchell with a red bow around his neck. We were in the "train house" on Rosedale road then. We had a big back yard, a half-acre or more. We fenced it and installed a dog door for Butzer to use whenever he wanted. To use the dog door, Butzer had to go up a three-foot long ramp. It took a while to train him, with Phillip crawling up and down the ramp and through the dog door to demonstrate the procedure. Butzer always went to the boat with this. The problem was he didn't like it much. He couldn't swim, and I had to rescue him from drowning once when he fell off the boat at Haven Harbor. Mitchell and I thought he may have suffered from motion sickness once we were underway. To be sure, he hated loud noises, such as the cannon that was fired on holiday weekends in St. Michael's and Annapolis. Whatever that would happen he would frantically try to escape from the boat, jumping on another one if it were handy, or sometimes going overboard. I ran 5 miles every day, and Butzer always ran with me. On one occasion, when I was running through Bryn Mawr with Butzer, a Lower Merion Police car stopped and asked me if I knew the owner of a little boxer puppy he had in the front seat beside him. He explained that he had found the puppy running loose on Overbrook Parkway, a major thoroughfare defining the western city limits of Philadelphia. I didn't know the owner and so the police officer left. I told Mitchell about it. They'll kill him if no one comes to claim him. Shortly thereafter I left on a trip to Kosovo, and Mitchell adopted the puppy while I was gone. We named him George, after Mitchell's childhood Boston terrier. Butzer would periodically forget how to use the dog door and we would have to show him how to do it all over again. Newpup never forgot, and was rambunctious in all matters. More than once, as we were taking both of them down the dock to the sailboat, Newpup got so frisky, dancing around, that he knocked Butzer off the edge of the dock with his rump.

I used to also raise Golden Retrievers but as I am getting older I decided to downsize a bit and concentrate primarily on Labradors, and decided on a fun name change for my kennel as well. I am blessed to live on two acres with a pool, at the end of a suburban street, almost unheard of nowdays. Houses have popped up all around us and more are going in every year, but I am still happy to have my little oasis! My dogs have a couple of large exercise yards with obstacles to play on as well as covered kennels that they can run into in case of bad weather. Additionally they have house time and pool time, my dogs all love to swim! I have a large number of grandchildren that visit frequently and several neighbor children that visit nearly every day that I have puppies! My puppies are born here and raised with tender loving care along with plenty of cuddle time and socialization with people of all ages, as well as large and small dogs. I have a large climate controlled kennel room with a doggy door to an outdoor area for mom. From birth to three weeks is the neonatal period where I keep a close eye on growth and development. I provide exercises to help develop my pups' neurological systems such as Early Neurological Stimulation and Early Scent Introduction. At three weeks,my puppies are potty trained to go in large low sided boxes filled with pine pellets for ease in keeping their area clean and sanitary, and as a stepping stone to housebreaking. Pups are given plenty of age appropriate toys and a large crate with soft bedding in which they learn that the crate is a nice den. Once my pups begin the weaning process they are fed moistened super premium all life stages kibble formulated with the proper ratios for slow growth which helps to prevent joint disorders. Prior to going to new homes, the pups will be microchipped, dewormed, vaccinated and have had a complete physical by our veterinarian. My adult dogs are thoroughly screened for potential health problems that come up in the Labrador breed prior to embarking on motherhood or fatherhood. They pass a hip clearance and an elbow clearance, where those joints are xrayed and the xrays are read and graded by an impartial board called the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. They pass a cardiac and patella clearance, are screened yearly by a veterinary Ophthalmologist for inherited eye disorders, and have DNA tests to rule out potential genetic disorders as well. It is so easy to lose your patience at times, but you need to know that your puppy is learning what is right and wrong, and that takes time. The ultimate goal is to train your puppy to stop mouthing and biting people altogether. However, the first and most important objective is to teach him that people have very sensitive skin, so he must be very gentle when using his mouth. Puppies usually learn bite inhibition during play with other puppies. Puppies also bite each other all over. Every now and then, a pup will bite his playmate too hard. The victim of the painful bite yelps and usually stops playing. The offender is often taken aback by the yelp and also stops playing for a moment. However, pretty soon, both playmates are back in the game. Through this kind of interaction, puppies learn to control the intensity of their bites so that no one gets hurt and the play can continue without interruption. Then, when he startles and turns to look at you or looks around, remove your hand. Either ignore him for 10 to 20 seconds or, if he starts mouthing on you again, get up and move away for 10 to 20 seconds. After the short time-out, return to your puppy and encourage him to play with you again. Play with your puppy until he bites hard again. When he does, repeat the sequence above. Require your puppy to be even gentler. Yelp and stop play in response to moderately hard bites. Persist with this process of yelping and then ignoring your puppy or giving him a time-out for his hardest bites. As those disappear, do the same for his next-hardest bites, and so on, until your puppy can play with your hands very gently, controlling the force of his mouthing so that you feel little or no pressure at all. If your puppy gets all riled up when you pet him, distract him by feeding him small treats from your other hand. This will help your puppy get used to being touched without mouthing. Encourage noncontact forms of play, such as fetch and tug-of-war, rather than wrestling and rough play with your hands. Once your puppy can play tug safely, keep tug toys in your pocket or have them easily accessible. If he starts to mouth you, you can immediately redirect him to the tug toy. If your puppy bites at your feet and ankles, carry his favorite tug toy in your pocket. Whenever he ambushes you, instantly stop moving your feet. Take out the tug toy and wave it enticingly. When your puppy grabs the toy, start moving again. The second he stops, praise and get a toy to reward him. Repeat these steps until your puppy gets used to watching you move around without going after your feet or ankles. Provide plenty of interesting and new toys so that your puppy will play with them instead of gnawing on you or your clothing. Provide plenty of opportunities for your puppy to play with other puppies and with friendly, vaccinated adult dogs. Consider enrolling your puppy in a good puppy class, where he can have supervised playtime with other puppies and learn some important new skills! Use a time-out procedure, just like the one described above—but change the rules a little. Instead of giving your puppy time-outs for hard biting, start to give him time-outs every time you feel his teeth touch your skin. Then immediately walk away from him. Ignore him for 30 to 60 seconds. If your puppy follows you or continues to bite and nip at you, leave the room for 30 to 60 seconds. After the brief time-out, return to the room and calmly resume whatever you were doing with your puppy. Then, instead of leaving the room when your puppy mouths you, you can take hold of his leash and lead him to a quiet area, tether him, and turn your back to him for the brief time-out. Then untie him and resume whatever you were doing. Spray areas of your body and clothing that your puppy likes to mouth before you start interacting with him. If he mouths you or your clothing, stop moving and wait for him to react to the bad taste of the deterrent. Praise him lavishly when he lets go of you. Apply the bad taste to your body and clothes for at least two weeks. After two weeks of being punished by the bitter taste every time he mouths you, your puppy will likely learn to inhibit his mouthy behavior. Be patient and understanding. Playful mouthing is normal behavior for a puppy or young dog. A CPDT will offer group or private classes that can give you and your dog lots of assistance with mouthing. Doing these things can actually encourage your puppy to bite your hands and feet. Do not discourage your puppy from playing with you in general. Play builds a strong bond between a dog and his human family. You want to teach your puppy to play gently, rather than not at all. Avoid jerking your hands or feet away from your puppy when he mouths. This will encourage him to jump forward and grab at you. Slapping or hitting puppies for playful mouthing can cause them to bite harder. They usually react by playing more aggressively. Physical punishment can also make your puppy afraid of you—and it can even cause real aggression. Avoid scruff shaking, whacking your puppy on the nose, sticking your fingers down his throat and all other punishments that might hurt or scare him. When Does Mouthing Become Aggression? Most puppy mouthing is normal behavior. However, some puppies bite out of fear or frustration, and this type of biting can signal problems with future aggression. Something as benign as simply holding your puppy still or handling his body might upset him. Tantrums can also happen when play escalates. In most cases, a playful puppy will have a relaxed body and face. If your puppy has a temper tantrum, his body might look very stiff or frozen. He might pull his lips back to expose his teeth or growl. Almost always, his bites will be much more painful than normal mouthing during play. Doing that might actually cause your puppy to continue or intensify his aggressive behavior. Instead, be very calm and unemotional. Then make plans to contact a qualified professional for help.
