The first thing to understand, though, is the need for repetition and consistency. Begin by purchasing the appropriate size crate. Think den not condo! It should be small with just enough room for your bulldog to stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably. It is not an exercise pen. The use of too large a crate will encourage your bulldog puppy to use a small portion of it for a bed and the rest of it as a place to potty. We use the Midwest Life Stages crates. Leave the crate door open and allow your bulldog puppy to come and go as he pleases. Keep his favorite treats handy that you only use for the crate. It gives the puppy a nice reason to go in and creates a positive experience. At mealtimes, feed your bulldog in the crate with the door closed. At night, just before bedtime take your bulldog puppy out to potty. Put your puppy in his crate and shut the door. For the first 3 nights set your alarm for 3 hours. Set him down and wait. When he goes potty, praise him and put him back in his crate. Set your alarm for 3 more hours and repeat. After three days, if it has been successful and there have been no accidents, move to 4-hour intervals. After three more nights, you have hopefully taught your puppy that you will be there to take him outside when he has to go. If there have been no accidents you can then start going to bed and waiting until your puppy wakes you up to potty. It is important to respond and take him out immediately if he wakes during the night. In the morning, as soon as you wake up, immediately take your puppy out. By house time, I mean freedom to move about but always in the same room as you so that you can keep a constant eye on him. We use baby gates to block off access to other rooms. During the day repeat the above process and continue to take the puppy out every hour. If he does not do his business put him back in his crate and try again in 15 minutes. NEVER let a bulldog puppy in training out of your site. Use the crate as you would a playpen for a human child. Even if you leave the room for a minute, either take the puppy with you or put him in the crate. If you turn your back for 60 seconds and your puppy has an accident, then you messed up and made a mistake and have missed the opportunity to make a correction and teach the puppy. Do not rub his nose in it and do not use any physical correction! When he goes outside give him lots of praise. Use an odor neutralizer. When an accident occurs it is important to completely remove the odor, otherwise your puppy will gravitate back to the area to relieve himself again. You can buy the neutralizers from most any pet store. Do not use household cleaners, most contain ammonia which will attract him back to the same spot. Shedding in plush-coated dogs also increases in the fall and spring when they shed their undercoat ready for the new season ahead. Regular brushing also fluffs up the coat for the best appearance. Before using the de-shedding tool mentioned above, I use the FURminator grooming rake , also from Amazon. This is better for thicker fur, such as the plush coat, and I use it for extra undercoat care. Medium coats should also be bathed times per year as over bathing will dry their skin and remove natural oils. However, their undercoat is often missing, which makes them unfit for AKC conformation events. The hair is often shiny and may form a parting along the back. Feathering occurs on the ears and legs, and they will have longer and thicker fur around the neck, which looks like a mane. On average, the topcoat features hair of at least 2 inches in length. In fact, in many instances, their missing undercoat requires a longer topcoat cover for temperature regulation. Ruskin House of Shepherds Long-haired varieties are considered objectively beautiful. You will still need to brush them frequently to prevent knots and tangles in the long fur. I recommend a good slicker brush, such as the Hertzko self-cleaning brush from Amazon. This brush is excellent for getting rid of tangles and knots without hurting your doggo, as the fine bristles do not scratch. They also retract back into the brush to avoid getting damaged when not in use. Looking at the appearance of long-coated GSDs, one would assume they require a lot of washing. The lack of an undercoat makes it too risky to wet the topcoat as the dog can get cold. Double Coated or Single Coated? The only German Shepherds with a missing undercoat are the long-haired ones. In some rare instances, a short-haired German Shepherd might have a very thin undercoat and might be disqualified from the show ring for the same reason. You can afford to have a single-coated pet if you live in a warmer climate. With the absence of an undercoat, they are more vulnerable to extreme temperatures. That said, you should not pay a premium price for an open coat since such a coat type is considered a fault. Open Coat at a Glance Technically has an undercoat; however, it is practically non-existent as it is extremely thin. Cannot enter dog shows. It is considered a fault, the same as a single coat by the AKC. Should cost less than the average German Shepherd. However, experienced breeders can often tell whether a puppy will be long-coated before they turn a month old. It is also common for some unique markings to appear or disappear at this time. Nevertheless, the change in appearance might still be significant between 7 and 18 months old. Their shade could become darker or lighter, and their coat pattern can show some slight changes as well. Changes could still occur as a result of diet, environmental exposure, or health issues. Even though the open face look is considered a breed standard for golden retrievers, it is considered an improper coat or an incorrect in Goldendoodles. Why Do Goldendoodles Have Furnishings? Since the furnishing gene is dominant, most Goldendoodles will have furnishings. When breeding first-generation F1 Goldendoodles, the puppies will inherit one gene from each parent which means they will almost always have furnishings. When it comes to breeding second-generation F2 Goldendoodles, the results can be a little more unpredictable. If one or both parents carry the dominant gene FF , then the puppies will have furnishings. Breeding mixed breeds like Goldendoodles can generally give unpredictable results as the puppies will usually take more after one parent than the other. So, the most effective way for Goldendoodle breeders and owners to ensure that their puppies will have the desired furnishings is to genetically test the parent dogs before breeding new litters. The results of the test will help you determine what genes the parents are carrying and the chances of them producing a litter of puppies with furnishings. So, if the goal is to breed puppies with furnishings, you need to make sure the Poodle parent is carrying two of the dominant furnishing gene FF. At birth, a Goldendoodle puppy will not have any signs of furnishings. It will also be impossible to tell the kind of coat the dog will have as it grows older. After a few weeks, the dog will start growing its facial furnishings as well as its puppy coat which it will shed later on before growing its final adult coat. Some breeders can also determine the kind of coat the Goldendoodle will have based on the presence of furnishings. Make sure to pay attention to the areas around the eyes and mouth. Make sure to use a fine-tooth metal comb and a bristle brush. Try not to tug or press down too hard while brushing as the areas around the eyes and mouth are very sensitive and you might accidentally hurt your dog. Some dogs will develop a double coat, a coat of fur with a soft and fluffy underbelly close to the skin, and a thicker, coarser, longer coat on the top. Golden retrievers have this double coat that keeps them warmer through insulation. It also waterproofs their skin. Golden retrievers were bred in part to be swimmers, so the waterproofing of the coat was very important to early golden retriever breeders. Instead, they have a single thick, dense coat. Most dogs will shed when the weather gets warmer or cooler so they can grow a new coat to better protect them against the weather. Their coat is similar to human hair. When breeders breed Goldendoodles, they want that poodle hair that doesn't shed and can be styled. They work very hard to make sure that as many puppies as possible have furnishing rather than a flat coat. Do all Goldendoodles have Furnishings? Most people expect that all Goldendoodles have that warm, gold, curly hair that forms eyebrows and a mustache. There are some that have flat coats. Golden retrievers have flat coats, and poodles do not. When you breed a flat coated dog with a furnished dog, roughly three-quarters of the puppies should have furnishings. Once the puppies have shed their puppy coats and grown their first adult coat, you can watch for the fuzzy T shape down the snout and around the eyes. If the fur there is longer than the fur anywhere else, then the puppy will have furnishings. The hair will probably be curly as well, but there are straight hair puppies with furnishings as well. If the puppy does have furnishings, prepare for regular grooming to keep it all in check! The hair won't stop growing naturally, so it will have to be cut or it will start to take over your puppy's beautiful face. What Makes a Goldendoodle Have Furnishings?
