They are great with children and have a temperament that first-time owners should be able to manage well. The survival rate decreased from 63 days. For some, the labour stages were prolonged and difficult. Most owners mentioned no issues with milk production or the need to hand feed or supplement. C-section On average, The puppies surviving by c-section were born around 61 days. The survival rate decreased from 65 days. Most owners decided to c-section because their female had shown partial signs of labour and then stopped inertia. Indicating more complex labour, possibly due to a stuck puppy or wrong positioning. Some puppies were born naturally when the female had been sedated and prepared for a c-section. The relaxation of the muscles means the puppy was easier to pull free these puppies were deceased. Distressed puppies did not survive the operation or longer than 2 days after birth. Some seemed weak, and some dams were not attentive to their young. Being restrictive on food will hopefully prevent any excessive and unnecessary growth. Even if the puppy is a typical size and the dam is maiden, you are still unaware of her ability to deliver naturally due to her pelvis size or strength of contractions. Females who have already successfully birthed puppies will provide the owner with additional information to gauge her ability to whelp. Raspberry leaf supplement is said to aid birthing and should be considered along with any veterinary agreement to calcium supplements, or oxytocin should contractions weaken. The lack of contractions or weakening contractions is called inertia. With solo babies, it can happen in the first stage of labour due to the puppy not stimulating or applying enough pressure on the uterine wall and cervix to trigger a natural birth. The second stage is when contractions exist but stop, mainly due to an oversized puppy, and the muscles have become tired of trying to push the puppy out. If the numbers are low, this confirms the puppy is ready for birth, so you can confidently c-section. If you Progesterone tested on mating, you would have confirmed ovulation before breeding, so your due dates will be reliable for possible c-sections. Not all puppies can be seen moving or felt, especially on deep-set breeds. I recommend checking the puppy for a viable heartbeat with an ultrasound before deciding on a c-section. Long Term Observations Surviving singleton puppies develop like typical puppies into adult dogs. Many commented that the puppy ended up larger than the breed standard or their Dams which wouldn't be usual if the puppy is male. This can mean they are more dependent on human interaction and, if not handled correctly, can become over-demanding and dominant. The puppies crawl all over each other, and they are used to the warmth, the contact, the interruptions, and the movement that result from being in a pile of dogs. Unlike with Littermate Syndrome , the behavior problems of singletons are a result of them being alone with little feedback and correction. Raising A Singleton Puppy If you find out that your dog is a singleton puppy early — anytime before the puppy heads to your home — there are things that can be done. Be sure to work on teaching bite inhibition, and handle the puppy a lot to avoid issues with touch sensitivity. Any gentle, regular handling is likely to help. Getting to spend a lot of time with another litter lets a singleton puppy have a more typical or normal experience as a young puppy. He was full of himself, had no frustration tolerance, little self control and almost no impulse control. His issues with frustration and control led to leash aggression with other dogs. His pet parent, who had actually bred him, was able to turn his behavior around, but it was a huge project. The next litter from the same female was also a solo puppy who turned out fine and totally normal, except for being a bit large for the breed, which is not unusual for singleton puppies. The pet parent did everything right with her second singleton puppy: She raised her with a Lab litter that was only a few days different in age than the solo puppy, and did everything else I advised. She did end up spaying the breeding female after the second singleton as there was too high a risk of it happening again. This second singleton puppy, benefiting from all the pet parent did to help her, was in no way behaviorally challenged like most singletons puppies are. The singleton turned out completely normal from a behavioral perspective, despite an unusual beginning, and this is an amazing accomplishment. So, if you find yourself with a singleton pup, work on teaching bite inhibition early on, handle the puppy often to discourage touch sensitivity, help the puppy experience interruptions and frustration, and most importantly encourage the puppy to spend time with other puppies of the same age as much and as early as possible in those first 12 weeks. What if I Have a Singleton Puppy? Ideally the breeder of a singleton pup will find another similar-age litter with which to spend those first weeks so she has more normal experiences as a young puppy. Have her spend time with other similar age and size puppies as much and as early and as often as possible during the first 12 weeks so she learns social skills. There IS cause for concern. Many dams often will not go into labor with a singleton puppy, as there are not enough hormones to trigger labor. As we have found, many dams will not produce milk with a singleton. The hormones are just not there, as a dam produces milk based on demand. No demand, no milk! Read about all the other things to watch for, and follow Saul's story. Singletons have a lot against them. It starts in utero, they get bigger, like a fish that grows to the size of its bowl, so they are harder to get out. Sometimes one puppy is not enough to provide the needed hormones to make the dam go into labor. A singleton can also risk the life of your dam. He is VERY vocal and lively with a good set of lungs. He has a very dark muzzle and is quite handsome and manly. There was only one Mastiff pup born this time. This is going to be quite different than Sassy's 11 puppies born last litter. And very frustrating. The puppy is on a warm rice pad because he does not have any littermates to keep him warm. Since there is only one puppy, I am using only the back four teats, and not the other five. I hope the others dry up. If I let all nine nipples come active, apparently I am asking for mastitis, as there is no way he can keep up to draining all nine. By one week old, I discovered, I should have only worked on the back two. The marking of the teats is more so my helpers and kids can help. We also make a chart to help keep track of feedings. The singleton pup is put into a box with a lot of stuffed toys so he can climb and snuggle up against them. He also needs the exercise of climbing over littermates to stimulate him. The pup has gone from grams to grams in the time between 9 a. I will suppplement once before bed. I gave him 7 cc and brought him back up to his birth weight and now he is sleeping with his teddies on a warm mat and is more content. I shouldn't have to supplement him again, but will sleep with them and put him on his mom to nurse every two hours. He is soooo cute. Sassy, the mommy Mastiff , is pretty sore. Poor girl, but she did eat a can of tripe. I am a little concerned as this was a painful surgery and before labor, so milk can be slow to come in. The pup was born at grams on Tuesday. By Wednesday he went down to grams. TIME to interfere. Mom does not have milk yet, BUT, you don't want to supplement too much and not have milk come in. I let pup suck and cry for an hour, then I tube fed him 20 cc. You have to watch with a bottle not to aspirate him. Bottle is the better option, but this puppy refuses a bottle, so must be tube fed. Also with this breed, and a bottle, they often get fluid in the nose which is asking for pneumonia. So tubing is much easier BUT.ONLY if you know how. You have to watch that singletons do not get too fat. Pups that get too heavy too fast and do not learn to walk by two weeks old are called swimmers. Swimmers cannot walk and their chests flatten. They need therapy to get up and moving, and it can ruin their bodies forever. A singleton is a candidate to become a swimmer because he doesn't have to move or fight for a nipple. This is something I am aware of, and will watch for. Some cuddle time, keeping the pup warm. But if I totally supplement the puppy, the dam's milk will not come in. The dam is sore and growling at the puppy, I cannot leave the puppy alone with her for a minute, yet she needs to suckle. This is taking up JUST as much time as a litter of .OH my. But, I did this. I will see it through. The pup sucked for 45 minutes on colostrum, and never got more than a gram. So I tubed him 20 cc to give him a boost and then he had a nap. When he wakes in 2 to 3 hours, he will have the energy to suck to bring in that milk. If I do not supplement this puppy a little, then he will become weak, and not have the energy to suck in a couple hours. I am only supplementing him enough to keep him strong, but not fill him up, and I do not supplement until AFTER he sucks for a good half hour. I can save this puppy by taking over. If I let nature take its course I would lose this puppy. Many breeders would call this fading puppy syndrome. I could take over anytime, and just start tubing every couple hours. I just want the milk to come in. He is down to grams, but good news, he nursed for an hour, and went up to grams; that is a start. So I am getting some milk production. I also tube fed him another 20 g. This puppy is NOT suffering. I am trying to find a balance to supplement him enough to keep him alive and strong enough to nurse to bring in the milk. So what I am now doing is letting him nurse every two hours for up to an hour, then supplementing him after his exhausted efforts of sucking. He is content. If I did not supplement him, this puppy would die. The puppy has been sucking for a minimum of 30 minutes, every 1. I gave the dam lots of liquids, good food and the room is not too hot. It's been three days and we are still waiting for milk. I am getting tired. While I wait for the milk and hope it comes in, I am faced with two choices. I could take him off and totally tube him and hand-raise him. Or, a breeder friend has a dam in whelp; I think I may borrow her dam and four puppies for a week. Just to get past this every two hour thing. Once he is at every four hours, it will be easier. Sassy, the real mommy, cries constantly. I do not know what is going through her mind, but she is frustrated as well I think. She licked the puppy for the first time last night. Most people do not have this option, but if you know of someone with a dam in whelp, you can use a surrogate mother. I do have the opportunity to borrow a friend's dam and puppies that are one day older than Saul. I JUMP at this opportunity!!! Here we have Saul and his new brothers and sisters. When you add a puppy to a different litter, you MUST use caution. The new dam can and often WILL kill the new puppy, so exercise caution; do not leave unattended for the first while. Saul got 4 cc of milk from his new mom, and I tubed him another 20 cc. I still have to help, as his foster mom is a pound Havanese.And I will still need to supplement him. I have added a very large breed dog to a toy breed dam. The larger puppy is very, very hungry, and is a bit too assertive. He wants food. So, what I am doing is every two hours, I am giving him 20 cc of Mammalac to take off the edge, and he is now gently nursing and not in a panic to get food. He knows there is food. The dam was worried, but with this technique of taking the edge off of the puppy, and with him being more gentle, she is accepting him. This is the first time I have done this, but with the help of mentors and friends, we have come up with this awesome answer to our situation. DAY 5 In the morning the pup weighed g and at noon he weighed g. Sassy the Mastiff mom is howling for her puppy. I put him on Sassy, and he got 8 grams of milk. WOW unbelievable! Her milk is finally in on the back two teats. I will put the puppy on the real mom once a day, as well as on the Havanese mom. Sassy the Mastiff mom is not as attentive to cleaning, so I will still put him with the Havanese mom too. Not a lot, but enough for one feeding a day. In the morning the pup was g. I left him alone with the Havanese dam all night, from 11 p. Saul the Mastiff puppy is doing very well. He is with the Havanese dam and four adoptive Havanese puppy siblings who are one-fourth his size. The Havanese dam tends to all his needs. During the day I tube him 20 g every couple hours while the Havanese dam tends to him all night. Sassy comes in once a day, and he gets about 10 cc of milk from her back two teats. I would say he has the best of everything. At one week old, his weight compared to a nursing puppy is exactly on. In fact, he is bigger. All the Havanese puppies cuddle up to Saul the Mastiff puppy. All is wonderful. She loves him as her own. Look how much larger the Mastiff puppy is than the Havanese puppy. The Havanese pup is one day older than the Mastiff pup. By keeping the singleton Mastiff puppy with the Havanese litter, it gives the Mastiff pup all of the stimulation and warmth he needs from the other puppies. Not to mention the care the mommy Havanese dam is giving him. The pups and dam do not know they are different breeds. To them, they are all one happy family. Sassy the Mastiff mom has been giving 10 cc a day of milk from her back two teats. On day nine Sassy gave 20 cc milk letdown to Saul. Sassy pulled Saul in close, cuddled him and put her arm around him. Soooooooooooooo sweet. Kissed him. Sassy does love him. She has very little milk today. But LOVE overflowing. And they went to sleep. Sassy has minimal milk, but twice a day she gets to snuggle and feed Saul. She gives him about 10 cc. I think Saul is going to be a BIG boy. He is not chubby. He is starting to walk about and gets OUT of the whelping box. So nice and agile. At three weeks, as sad as it was, Saul was getting too big to be raised by a toy dog mom and her babies. His Havanese mom will leave in two days. Saul is totally paper trained at 3. I have put Saul next to the week-old Havanese , so they visit through the fence. He still visits with his mom, Sassy, but she doesn't tend to him at all. Saul the Mastiff puppy at five weeks old Saul the pound Mastiff puppy at five weeks old playing with week-old Havanese puppies. Saul pins them down; part of his instinct at play; he wants to be dominant. Crate training is the ideal next step in potty training a puppy. It should begin when a puppy is about eight weeks old. If you still have the puppies when they are eight weeks old, crate train them so they will be even better potty trained by the time they have new owners. The crate will be like the den the puppy was in with its mother. With crate training, you will be teaching the puppies to spend long periods of time in their crates. Make the crates comfortable by putting blankets on the crate floors and placing sturdy food and water bowls in the crates. Also, put some toys in the crates so the puppies can stay busy. The puppies may go inside the crates on their own, or you may have to encourage them. Encourage them by placing treats near the crate entrance, then just inside the crate, then further back in the crate. When you take the puppies out of their crates to go outside, they should go to the bathroom in the same place each time. If you have a backyard, take each puppy out to the yard, one at a time. Let the puppy select the potty area. Once your puppy goes, give it lots of verbal praise. Don't just let the puppy out and walk away. Stay with the puppy and watch them, rewarding and praising them when they toilet in the right place. With multiple puppies, the puppies will likely choose their own little spots in the yard to go to the bathroom. Each puppy will leave its scent in its own potty area. Very young puppies cannot hold their bladders for very long. As a rule of thumb, a 1-month-old puppy should be let out every 1 hour, a 2-month-old every 2 hours, and so on. The AKC advocates for the responsible ownership of dogs and promotes purebred dog events, such as the Westminster Dog Show. May 23, Susanne Shelton We never could have predicted the enthusiasm for our litter box training protocol, and now after years of raising litters with our method, and teaching it to other breeders, we have converted this blog into a fully updated, media rich, course for breeders and fosters. We even designed a detailed, step by step, house training course for those who purchase puppies raised with our Poop School methods. If anyone had told me I could raise a litter of German Shepherd puppies from birth through 10 weeks in my home without going stark raving mad, I would never have believed them! Too big! Too many! Too much poop! Prior to Puppy Culture, we raised puppies inside our home for the first six weeks. Good enough, right? We thought so, and indeed this worked okay for many years. But times, and paradigms, change. While our older model worked well, we missed out on a lot — our puppies AND their new owners. There was so much more we could accomplish if the puppies were inside the house. We could spend our time on more than just poop patrol! We had been doing good, but Puppy Culture showed us how much better we could be doing. I became dedicated to figuring out and perfecting how to teaching my puppies what they needed to know to live inside with us the full nine to ten weeks. With less time spent cleaning messes, I would have the time to really work through the Puppy Culture protocols. If I was going to keep a bunch of little poop machines in my house for weeks on end, I decided they would have to be litter box trained. Litter box training is covered in Puppy Culture, but what worked for me is just a little bit different. As an unexpected bonus, our puppies were significantly easier for their new families to house train. Talk about a win-win! First toilet! On the other side I place a small bed. So, sleep area and toilet area, baby version. What I used: 1 Durawhelp to line the whelping box. I remove the whelping box and put the larger toilet where the whelping box toliet was, along the western wall of our dog room. In front of the new toilet is a slightly larger play area. On the eastern side of the pen I put in a row of small puppy beds during week 4 and small crates week 5. Once the puppies are moving off their bed area to urinate, I add the crates. By now the puppies poop in the toilet most of the time, but they still miss as much as they hit with pee. Part 2: Removed Puppy Pads and added litter boxes with pellets. During week 4 the puppies rarely make it all the way to the toilet to urinate, they are just not mature enough. This tells me the puppies are learning to move away from their bed and play area to potty, which is an important skill. From the moment we move the puppies to the weaning pen, we start to carry each puppy to the litter box immediately after eating. Someone watches them to make sure they actually hit the toilet when they void. During week 4 we are often placing the puppies in the toilet when we know they need to poop. SOME of the puppies will start going to the toilet to poop during this week and by the end of week 5 we hope that most of the poop will be in the toilet. Part 3: Pen expansion, added crates. They are not adults, we are just looking for an effort to reach the toilet to tell us the puppies are learning and trying. Footing: EZ Whelp Pads. Crates: One Vari Kennel, Three 24 x 17 inch wire crates. Doors are removed or front panel folded down. Please take a look at my crate conditioning blog for more info on crates. I have learned that keeping the toilet in the same place speeds toilet training. Now, I always have the toilet on the west wall of their pen, even starting as early as the whelping pen pad, and THAT was really helpful. On previous litters I experimented and moved the toilet around often, that really made it harder for my puppies to have success. My suggestion is that you decide before the litter is born how you will build out from the whelping box, to the weaning pen, to the toddler pen. Plan in advance, so your litter box will stay in the same area the entire time. The now expanded weaning pen, the litter box is in the same position, the play area is larger to meet the needs of our growing puppies. Week .At the end of week 5 we enlarge the weaning pen. The puppies are now using the toilet most but not all of the time and their pen is enlarged to make room for more exercise and passive enrichment. At this point you can also see the door is available left to their puppy patio outside. The crates are still on the wall opposite of the toilet, and our crate conditioning plan is in full force. The pen opens into the kitchen and living room right , and outdoors left. We are still using the three pan toilet for these two weeks. Please note, there are still plenty of pees outside the toilet, but most of the poop is inside the toilet. We continue to ensure the puppies either run to, or are carried to, their litter box after each meal. By this age we are feeding the puppies in their crates, so after each meal the crates are opened and the puppies encourage to their toilet area to void. What I added: Larger 24 x 36 inch crates not visible here. Week For the last two or three weeks the puppies are with us, we expand the weaning pen until it takes up the entire dog room. I found my puppies do not like to touch poop, and will choose to poop outside of the box if they must touch poop to void inside the box. Not a problem during the day when we pick up constantly, but at night the box can get poopy. Our largest litter box area, we use this at night for large litters in weeks 7 and 8. This photo shows the boxes reversed! This largest toilet helps the puppies succeed in getting fully into the box to void, even if there are some poops in it. Puppies are now taken outside for potty breaks as often as possible, through their exterior door and onto their puppy patio outside. They still need and use their litter box however, and there is the occasional accident on the EZ whelp pads. By now we are encouraging the puppies to void outside. They have a doggie door that leads to their puppy patio, so they can go outside often on their own. We found by starting early, creating an environment designed for success, and not expecting perfection we have been able to enjoy having our puppies in the house with us with far LESS work than ever imagined. This has freed up even more time to implement Puppy Cultures core protocols, active enrichment, training, socialization and teaching puppies to be enrichment seekers. We start the puppies on newspaper around 3wks old, then by 4wks we offer a litter box or area with shavings or pellets, the puppies naturally figure out how to use it. In our whelping rooms the puppies have access to a doggy door, which goes out directly into a litter box. Dogs by natural instinct typically do not wish to eliminate themselves where they sleep, so the puppies go out the door and use the box. But, by the time the puppies are 8wks old, they have got it down almost perfectly! The main key to litter box training for puppies, is to keep their space very small. There should only be room for thier bed, food dishes and 1 or 2 litter boxes. As they get better their space is allowed to get larger. We recommend the puppies using a litter box after they go to their new homes. Puppies have no bladder control until after they are 16wks old. They typically need to go out to relieve themselves every hour. If you are like me.This is where the litter box training comes in really handy! If you can set up your puppies home space with a litter box, you will not have to worry as much about if they need to go potty. I have found no issues with housebreaking after using the litter boxes. We still take our puppies outside to potty as often as we can, this way they still get rewarded for using the bathroom outside. This is our whelping room. It is heated and cooled as needed. Each room has a doggy door that opens to the outside, for the mother to get a break from the puppies or as the puppies get older, a place for them to go potty. This is a view from the outside of the whelping room. These puppies are now old enough to go in and out and use the potty in their shavings. On many occasions, once the puppies are weaned we will move the puppies - to our new kennel. Here if the weather is bad outside, the puppies will learn to go only in thier litter box. This room is plenty large enough for the puppies to get lots of playtime outside of their kennel but not have to go outside in the cold. They also get TONS of visitors and attention from all our riding lesson families! Once you take your new puppy home, we recommend you set up something like this. In our home we use a 48" crate with a litter box and a dog bed. This way the puppy can still use the potty even if I can not get him outside. This not only keeps the bed clean, but gives your puppy something to lay on. As you see Pazley loves it up there! Keep the side height around or under 6 inches. If you have a very small puppy you may wish to cut a doorway into the box, as shown above in our crate. Pin It Dogs have been living side by side with people since people were still nomadic. It seems equally unsurprising that studies have recently shown that dogs, on the whole, prefer women to men. Our modern lives have taken us out of caves, given us rabies vaccines, the 19th Amendment and introduced some new problems. Work hours are long. The night is dark. Weather can be inclement. Be that as it may, litter training works best for small breed dogs and puppies. The idea of a Great Dane using a litter box is comical but also a logistical nightmare if you think about it. The first option is the most obvious: a conventional litter box. A dog box is bigger than a cat box, has higher sides and no top. Most dog litter is made of recycled newspaper but there are also clay options. Next up is the pee pad holder. They have plastic undersides and are absorbent to soak up and contain any urine. They are designed for use during housebreaking and were meant to replace the tradition of puppies peeing on newspapers. The problem?
