A Labrador puppy for Christmas? Your very own Christmas puppy? What an amazing Christmas present a puppy would make. Because sometimes, a Christmas puppy can work out brilliantly. Both for the family and for the dog. So bear with me for a moment. Puppies born on or around the last few days in October will, in theory, be ready for their new homes at Christmas time. And if there is some unusual reason that they have done this, most responsible breeders will prefer to hang on to those puppies until after the celebrations. Rather than send puppies to their new homes at such a turbulent time. If you are buying this puppy on impulse, this is something you might want to consider. You see, if your breeder by some chance is not a responsible breeder, there might be a whole raft of other duties that they have neglected. Puppy Routines Moving home is very stressful for a new puppy. One of the things he needs above all else is for his new life, at least at first, to be predictable. He needs to know where his den or bed is. He needs to know where he is allowed to go to the toilet. And how to find his way around in this new and strange home. He needs to get to know his family, at his own pace. For those that go ahead with such a challenge, a crate is not optional, it is essential. Yet when many people are packed into a normal sized house, room for a crate is unlikely to be a priority. Relatives may not agree with you on the best location for this large piece of metal in their home. Seasonal disputes are common over the Christmas break as we all adjust to spending more time together than normal. Adding a fight about where to put a crate is not going to help. And you could well end up with your brand new puppy shut away and neglected. At which point he may learn to howl the house down until one of the other guests picks him up and cuddles him which they will. You will then have a puppy that has learned that screaming for attention works wonders. And he will be only to happy to scream even louder next time he is left alone. What About Night Times? A puppy may well yell and protest at night too if crated. How will your fellow housemates feel about that on Christmas Eve? Many new puppy owners think that they can simply pop their tiny puppy into bed with them at night. And once you fall asleep you will have no chance of intervening when they chew through the cable on your bedside lamp or demolish your mobile phone. Without a crate or something very similar, you will have no control over where your puppy goes. Or what he does in the room you sleep in once you have dropped off to sleep. If indeed you are able to go to sleep at all. Christmas Puppy For those that go ahead with their Christmas puppy there are other concerns. It's the way it has been for thousands of years and it's a canine urge that is not going to go away no matter how pampered or spoiled a life a dog lives. So dogs have this innate craving to sniff after scents that builds up each day if not allowed to really use this, it can cause a dog to become frustrated. So, an indoor game that involves a Boxer using his sense of smell along with a task that requires focus is often an integral part of preventing hyper behavior and giving a dog a feeling of accomplishment that can work with the other elements to keep him calm. You might be thinking that you'll have to invest in some sort of intricate canine version of Sudoku. Not at all. This is as easy as hiding some treats in the house and encouraging your Boxer dog to find them. As with cardio mentioned earlier, the energy level and enthusiasm of the owner plays a huge part in how eager a Boxer will be to follow through. Speak with in an animated voice and encourage your dog to seek out the hidden treats. Start with easy to find hiding places and then work up to much more difficult sessions. Once a dog learns that it's time to play the game, he often will not give up and will search until he finds his treasure. The size of a dog's world is exactly the size that an owner allows it to be. Dogs that are not used to seeing cars and people walking about will often bark like mad when they do actually see them. Dogs that are not used to being out in public will act inappropriately because they have not been exposed enough to know how to stay calm. Just a light trim to help stop their bodies from over heating. The fur coat, actually protects their skin from sun burn, and helps to prevent it from drying out, which can cause skin conditions. Clean up the hair around the dogs face, in particular around the eyes, if it has bushy eyebrows, and around the muzzle. It is best to look at reducing the length of the fur in areas that can could cause health problems or discomfort, if the fur was to become clumped up and mattered. How to Best Control Shedding? Straight haired labradoodles shed a lot more than any other labradoodles. As tempting as it may be to shave your furry companion to help counter shedding. It nonetheless remains inadvisable and should be avoided. It can be lessened however. Just as we humans shed hair, so will a healthy and happy dog. Throughout the year, your pooch will continue to shed hair, more so as the weather warms up and their winter coat falls out. To counter this, get in the habit of giving your dog regular grooming. A little bit of brushing can go a long way. It removes loose hair, and helps to re-affirm the bond between you and your dog, as they enjoy the attention and can even find the grooming to be relaxing. Bathing your dog should be kept to a minimum as the shampoos and warm water can lead to dry skin and other skin conditions. Instead take your dog for swims or use lukewarm water to rinse off their coats. The most important thing to remember is to keep your dog in a comfortable environment, as stress can cause a dog to shed even more. If they are just dirty with dust and mud, use lukewarm water or a running hose to wash away the dirt. Alternatively encourage them to swim in a body of water such as a river or at the beach while under your supervision. As a precautionary measure you can get a life jacket for your labradoodle. When you do need to give them a proper bath, use a mild oatmeal or coconut based dog shampoo. It will strip away some of the oils from their coat, but these types of shampoos will help to keep the skin moisturized. Over bathing can lead to skin irritations that can be itchy and uncomfortable.
