Coat on the head, lower part of the ears, paws, and the front of the legs is short and even. Feet may be trimmed and stray hairs neatened, but neither the natural appearance of the coat nor the outline of the dog should be altered by trimming. Fault: Trimming other than described above. Serious Faults: Excessively long coat; open coat; soft coat. Color Color may be any shade of golden, but it must be rich and lustrous. Body color that approaches cream or red is undesirable. Some latitude may be given when judging a lighter-colored puppy whose coat shows promise of darkening with age. Feathering may be lighter than the rest of the coat, and lighter shadings extending upward from the underbody are typical and acceptable. These lighter shadings must not be confused with white markings. With the exception of graying or whitening of face or body due to age, any white marking, other than a few white hairs on the chest, should be penalized in proportion to its extent. Serious Fault: Any noticeable area of black or other off-color hair. Disqualification: Albinism. A correctly built Golden Retriever male in working condition should weigh between pounds, and a female should weigh between pounds. Faults: Dogs up to one inch above or below standard height should be penalized proportionately. Gait When trotting, the gait is effortless, smooth, powerful and well coordinated, showing good but not exaggerated reach in front and drive behind. The topline remains level with only a slight flexing to indicate suppleness. Viewed from any position, legs turn neither in nor out, nor do feet cross or interfere with each other. As speed increases, feet tend to converge toward center line of balance. It is recommended that dogs be shown on a loose lead and moved at a moderate speed to reflect true gait. Eliminating Faults An Eliminating Fault is a Fault serious enough that it eliminates the dog from obtaining any awards in a conformation event. One inch or greater over or under the standard height. Disqualifications A dog with a Disqualification must not be considered for placement in a conformation event, and must be reported to UKC. Unilateral or bilateral cryptorchid. Do your research — Before purchasing anything online, including pets, look up reviews for the site, or person, you are buying from. If the seller declines, challenge them on why. Choose your payment method wisely — If you decide to go ahead with the purchase, avoid paying by bank transfer as that offers you little protection if you become a victim of fraud. Instead, use a credit card or a payment service such as PayPal. Buying a Puppy The Golden Retriever is an excellent choice for a family pet, and though a sporting breed, it is one of the most adaptable. A Golden can be all things to all people, from fulfilling its original function in the shooting field, to service dog for search and rescue, guide dog, hearing dog for the deaf and working dog for the police and customs. Most are intelligent, unfailingly cheerful and gentle making them ideal companions for families with children. As family pets they can be taught to compete successfully in obedience, agility and working trials as well as in the show ring. There are, however several points to bear in mind before you purchase your new puppy. Owning a puppy is a responsibility requiring a serious commitment from all members of the family, for this will be a partnership that can last anything up to 12 — 15 years. Perhaps at this point we ought to remind you of a few of their less attractive traits. Goldens shed their coats frequently and copiously. Do not buy one if you are house-proud, have pale coloured carpets or a dodgy vacuum cleaner. Goldens are large dogs with an uncanny knack of finding all the muddiest puddles. Some are great wallowers — yours is bound to be one of them! Faeces are a by-product of all dogs, which we all have to dispose of responsibly. It is one of the more unpleasant facts of dog ownership, and most public places now require you to pick up after your dog. Veterinary fees are expensive, so it makes sense to insure your dog, indeed most breeders will insist you do so. Goldens do not make good kennel dogs, most are real couch potatoes, who unerringly find the most comfortable sofas and the choicest position in front of the fire. Some Goldens are great landscape architects, if your garden is a show piece, having your own Ground Force team may not go down too well. The garden must also be well fenced with sturdy boundaries, like Anne Robinson, puppies will always find the Weakest Link. Although usually tractable and obedient, given an inch, most will take the whole nine yards! If you still insist that a Golden is the dog for you, read on. Choosing your puppy. Always buy from a breeder where you can see the mother with her puppies. This will give you an idea of how the puppies will turn out. If the breeder does not own the stud dog, ask to see photographs of him. Make sure that both the sire and the dam of the puppies have the appropriate health clearances, and ask to see the certificates. Click on the diamond for an explanation of the health schemes. Reputable breeders will have their puppies checked out by their veterinary surgeon prior to sale and bear in mind you may be asked to sign a sales contract. Are they scrupulously clean? Is the breeder making provision for proper socialisation of the litter? Are the puppies happy and out-going, with clear eyes and skin? If yours is a family with very young children, do not go for the cute, shy puppy sitting on his own in the corner. Opt for the middle-of-the-road puppy that interacts well with his siblings, is lively and happy without being too dominant, bold or brash. A Golden puppy should be confident and interested to explore his surroundings. If colour is important to you, bear in mind the puppies will all look considerably lighter at this age than they will end up. The colour of their ears gives an approximate guide to their ultimate colour. What may appear to be a quiet puppy may be the life and soul of the litter who has just had a mad half hour and worn himself out! Make sure you have been given all the Kennel Club documentation and copies of all appropriate health clearances with the puppy, an advice sheet and a diet sheet. Stick to the diet suggested by the breeder until the puppy has settled well into his new home before you make any changes. Well bred puppies should also be Kennel Club Registered, this is proof of lineage. There is no reason not to register a litter, it cost very little. Be wary of breeders offering puppies un-registered. Puppies should also come with advice of worming, vaccination and some offer an insurance cover note to cover pups for first few weeks. Do your homework. Buy, or borrow from the library, all the books you can on Goldens. Puppies do not sit gift wrapped on a shelf — be prepared to wait for the puppy of your choice. Caring for your new puppy. Training should start as soon as you arrive home. Have one set of rules for all the family and stick to them. Puppies, like young children, need routine and firmly established ground rules. Goldens are good with children, but make sure your children are taught to be caring and responsible with dogs. A puppy is a living, breathing real-life creature, not a toy and should be treated with respect. Your children and your puppy. Provide the puppy with its own bed and do not allow the children to disturb the puppy when it is sleeping. Always make sure there are no staples that the puppy could swallow. Do not allow young children to pick up the puppy. Do not allow very young children to play with the puppy unsupervised. Do not allow children to become over excited around the puppy. This means no screaming, no jumping and no fighting. Do not allow young children to feed the puppy or disturb the puppy while it is eating. The First Night. The first night is always a little fraught. It will be the first time your puppy has been separated from his mother and siblings, so expect him to cry a little and do not be unduly alarmed when he does so. Be calm and matter of fact, do not excite the puppy and make sure it has relieved itself before putting it to bed. Most breeders will have given you a small piece of blanket with the scent of his family on it, that you can put inside his bed and which will help to settle the puppy. Provide a warm comfortable blanket such as Vet Bed, which is hard-wearing and easily cleaned. Dogs are den animals and so prefer their bed to be tucked in a corner. House Training As a rule Goldens learn quite quickly and although at times it seems as though they will never be clean, most are by around four months. Puppies are not really capable of controlling bladder function much before this time, so anticipation and vigilance on your part is of prime importance. So as soon as you arrive home with your new pup carry him straight to the spot in the garden and stay with him until he has performed, then make a fuss of him, then he can go and explore his new home. The odd accident is an inevitable part of house training your puppy, so be prepared to experience it. Remember, prevention is better than cure! View accidents as a lack of vigilance on your part. Times to watch are after a meal and a sleep. Take the puppy outside to his spot in the garden. An eight-week-old puppy can spend a penny for England, so be warned! Remember that these dogs are retrievers, so it would be going against their nature if they were never allowed to pick things up. All puppies chew: It is a natural process that enables baby teeth to be expelled. If anything precious gets spoiled it is your own fault. Your puppy is an instinctive animal. There is no point in getting cross if your puppy chews things if he is unsupervised for long periods The Devil makes work for idle paws! If you do have to be away from home for more than a couple of hours, you will need to arrange for a puppy-sitter. Though Goldens are usually extremely biddable and kind to people, children and other animals, as youngsters they can be lively and boisterous and appear to be in trouble more than they are out of it Your puppy has no concept of the social graces unless you teach it, and people usually get the dogs they deserve. We strongly recommend obedience classes for you and your puppy to learn to become responsible members of society. Your breeder will be able to advise you of local classes. The very first lesson should be for the puppy to learn his own name and to come when called. Call him and make a fuss of him when he bounds over and give him a food reward. Hopefully by the time he has gained the confidence to go off exploring, the lesson will have been learnt and the thought of a treat will bring him back. If he is told off at this point he will associate the punishment with coming to you, not the fact that it was in his own time. NEVER hit a young puppy; violence solves nothing and your dog will associate pain to being with you and it will take weeks of patience to win him round again. Teach your puppy to accept you as his new pack-leader and that what you say goes. Use short one-word commands, but try to make learning fun. If you have a dominant, greedy puppy who guards his food, hand feeding him for several meals often works. If the puppy growls and guards a prized possession, remove the article and spend time giving the item back and then gently removing it again, until the puppy accepts your supremacy. Initially, a play in your garden is quite sufficient for your new puppy. After he has received his vaccinations, start with 10 to 15 minutes exercise off the lead in a safe area allowing him to set the pace. Exercise can be increased as the puppy grows, but very gradually. Remember your puppy is growing at an alarming rate and over-exercise and too boisterous play can cause damage to joints and cartilage later on. A good way to monitor exercise is a guide of 5 minutes for each month of the puppies life, ie: at 3 month 15 minutes lead exercise twice a day, which is then increased every month by 5 minutes. Take it slowly at first, and by the time your dog is 12 to18 months old he will be able to take all the exercise you care to give him, and more. The new Nobivac and Canigen vaccines out now, enable the vaccination programs to be completed earlier, so your puppy can be socialised earlier. Until last injection has taken effect, he should not leave the confines of your garden, unless he is carried. The breeder, using a proprietary brand of wormer should have wormed your puppy at least three times. Even so, it makes sense to be certain that children wash their hands after playing with the puppy and before eating. Worm again every couple of weeks until 3 months, then once or twice a year as a precaution. Ask your Vet for a recommended brand of wormer. Groom your puppy every day. This not only helps to keep him clean, but also establishes a bond between the two of you. Get your puppy used to having his ears looked at, his feet picked up and his teeth checked on a daily basis, so that any veterinary examination, should it be necessary at a later date, will not be too much of an ordeal. Initially, grooming will just consist of a thorough brushing, though later as the adult coat and feathering comes through, a daily check for knots and tangles will become necessary. And Finally. With just a little effort and training, your puppy will mature into a wonderful companion and a fully fledged member of the family that you can take anywhere and whom you will be proud to own. Should the unthinkable happen and your circumstances change so that you are unable to keep your puppy or older dog, please remember to inform the breeder in the first instance. The conditions were horrible, and she was forced to give birth to litter after litter of puppies. Volunteers came to the puppy mill to rescue 37 pugs - and then they also saw the English bulldogs in their cages. Ashley Helkenn When the rescuers asked the owner what would happen to the bulldogs, she said that she would probably kill them. So, of course, the rescue immediately took them, too. When Schnitzel first arrived into the care of the rescue, she had countless issues. She had cherry eye in both of her eyes so severe that she could barely see at all. She also had demodectic mange, a severely sensitive stomach, an infected tail that had to be amputated, infected ears, kennel cough and pneumonia. Ashley Helkenn Soon, Schnitzel went into foster care. Her issues seemed endless, and it was uncertain if any family would be able to take her on. But soon, someone fell in love with her. While her husband was skeptical, Helkenn fell in love with the sweet girl immediately. Hans knew that I knew it was a good fit, so he trusted it. She had every reason to hate people and want to lash out at them, or to be so filled with fear that she couldn't trust people. But she wasn't like that. She had no idea how to cuddle on the couch and struggled with being house-trained. Her diet had to be very strict, and any missteps would cause her severe issues for weeks at a time. Slowly, though, she adjusted. Ashley Helkenn "She lived with a sense of giving people the benefit of the doubt, instead of making people prove themselves," Helkenn said. Looking back, I think I thought that maybe I could learn some of those lessons from her. Everything was going fine at first - until Hummer was diagnosed with dementia. Ashley Helkenn "He kept getting more aggressive and would act like he had no idea who she was," Helkenn said. Eventually, the pair developed a routine and they were able to be around each other with few issues. The real solution, though, was when their new brother Bratwurst arrived. Ashley Helkenn Bratwurst previously Brad Pitt , was also rescued from the puppy mill. He was fostered with Schnitzel initially and later adopted, but his new family ended up not being able to keep him. They contacted Helkenn to see if her family would want him, and they said yes - depending on if Hummer and Schnitzel got along with him. And, miraculously, both did. Ashley Helkenn "Bratwurst is the most laid-back dog I have ever met, so Hummer is good with him," Helkenn said. If she goes in her kennel, he will get in with her and stay there until she feels safe. Schnitzel and Bratwurst started life together in the puppy mill and somehow ended up together again - in a supportive, loving family. Ashley Helkenn "She has been such a transformative power in our lives and opened us up to a way of being present, practicing patience and teaching us to forgive," Helkenn said. There may be as few as breeding dogs or as many as breeding dogs housed at a single facility. It is estimated there are approximately 10, puppy mills in the USA, the majority being located in the Midwest. Read more here. Are puppy mills legal? The fact is, commercial dog breeding is considered legal business in the United States and has been for many decades. The current legal standards for care, housing and treatment in commercial breeding kennels are outlined in the Animal Welfare Act AWA , which was signed into law in .Although there have been amendments passed over the years and individual states may implement further regulations, the provisions remain grossly inadequate in providing basic, humane care for breeding dogs. Despite that we know this to be true, we have no legal authority over any aspect of the industry. In addition to the federal law, some states have laws that regulate the commercial breeding industry as well. However, in most cases, the standards that breeders are required to meet by law are extremely minimal. Conditions that most people would consider inhumane, or even cruel, are often totally legal. The cage only needs to be six inches larger than the dog top and sides — this does not include the tail. Painful, wire flooring is acceptable — and most common. Cages can be stacked one on top of another and the dogs relieve themselves in their cages. There is no limit. There is no limit to how many people should care for the dogs. One or two people can care for as many as 1, dogs. Unwanted dogs may be killed by the breeder — they do not have to be turned over to rescue or shelters. Interaction with humans is not required. How are dogs in puppy mills treated? Puppy mills usually house dogs in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions, without adequate veterinary care, food, water and socialization. Puppy mill dogs do not get to experience treats, toys, exercise or basic grooming. To minimize waste cleanup, dogs are often kept in cages with wire flooring that injures their paws and legs—and it is not unusual for cages to be stacked up in columns. Breeding dogs at mills might spend their entire lives outdoors, exposed to the elements, or crammed inside filthy structures where they never get the chance to feel the sun or breathe fresh air. How did puppy mills begin? Puppy mills became more prevalent after World War II. Nearly all popular breeds of dogs are produced in puppy mills. Small and medium size dogs are easiest to manage and house so they are most commonly bred, but larger breeds such as English Bulldogs, German Shepherds and even Great Danes are often bred in puppy mills as well. How can I get a puppy mill shut down? Keep in mind that the commercial breeding of dogs is a legal industry. This usually depends on the store. Some stores say that they return the puppies to the breeders, some say that they keep discounting them until they do sell, and some say that they will find a local shelter to take them to. I heard that the AKC supports puppy mills, is that true? The fact is, many AKC-registered dogs are born in puppy mills. What is the difference between a puppy mill and a responsible breeder? Puppy mills exist for only one purpose — to make money. In a puppy mill, there may be as many as 30 different breeds and up to or more breeding dogs. Every female is pregnant with every heat, including their first heat at 6 — 10 months old when they themselves are still a puppy. The puppies receive little to no medical attention, are not socialized with people, are almost always taken from their mothers too young, and often start their lives out in the world sick and scared. There is absolutely no regard to the health and well-being of the breeding dogs and when they can no longer produce puppies, the majority of them are killed. Most often, a reputable breeder has great interest in one or perhaps two breeds. The purpose of their breeding program is to continually strive to bring their bloodlines closest to the breed standard. A reputable breeder spends a great deal of time, effort and money showing their dogs, socializing their dogs, having their breeding dogs tested for genetic defects, and being very careful to place their puppies in permanent, loving homes. A reputable breeder wants to know about you and develop a relationship with you. They enjoy updates and photographs of their puppies as they grow and are always available to help with any questions or concerns about their puppies. One of the most important things to know is that a reputable breeder has nothing to hide. They want you to meet the parents of the puppies and see the environment the puppies are raised in. Starting at the most local level of government, you have the ability to spread this message and raise awareness with those who have the power to create laws. A few days later, it happened again but he did bite him this time. Tonight he bit my other son. This is especially the case with puppy mill dogs who are raised in a stressful situation and are often missing out on positive experiences during their critical socialization period. Dog Gone Problems: Our dog barks and nips at people By David Codr When a dog starts biting, it's time to have the situation be addressed in-person by a dog behaviorist, dog behavior consultant or a positive-reinforcement-based dog trainer. Until that takes place, all interactions between your kids and the dog should be supervised. I can offer some advice, but you have many things going on and without a trained eye to observe your dog, I worry there may be other factors not being identified. It's a good thing you did notice, address and mention the infection, as it most certainly is a contributing factor. If it was aggravated by someone accidentally stepping on a paw, that may have been painful and caused a negative association. But just having an infection could be a factor here. You mentioned you had to carry the dog upstairs and force it into the crate for six weeks. Any form of force is going to be met with resentment. It's wonderful that you have abandoned that, but some damage to the relationship was likely done. If you are correcting — or, worse, punishing — your dog physically, that would certainly be a factor. Dogs don't learn though physical punishment, and it almost always makes matters worse. If your dog shows any teeth, growls, nips or bites, he's saying he disagrees. Any punishment applied will certainly make matters worse. I also tell people to poll their dog when they go to interact with it. This means if you want to pet the dog, you reach out and stop a few inches away from making contact. If the dog leans forward or nudges your hand, you can go ahead and pet. But if he turns his head to the side, backs up or lowers his head, he's saying, "I'd prefer to not be petted right now. Many young children interact with dogs inappropriately, including waking the dog with pets while he's asleep or interacting with him when he has bones, food or other high-value items, etc. These are times the dog should be left alone and given seven feet or more of space. Rough play and teasing can also happen with younger children, so make sure those are not going on. Some dogs put up with these type of interactions for awhile and then reach a boiling-over point. Be sure that is not the case in your home. A fenced off area is a good idea, but you can also incorporate safe spaces for the dog like a dog bed. Once there, the children should not be allowed to interact with him in any way. No petting, no talking to him, no tossing toys or attempting to lure him off the bed. Since many dog breeds are the product of poor breeding, it can be debated whether or not your average Goldendoodle really has the best of both worlds. While these two breeds are not a contrast in terms of temperament, they are different in various aspects. Of course, Poodles are no guard dogs but they can definitely be more suspicious of strangers or at the very least, be quite reserved with them. With the family, both dogs should ideally be calm according to their respective breed standards. However, the Retriever side needs to be physically exercised and mentally stimulated. Make no mistake to assume the Poodle is a couch potato, they can be quite active too. Is it better to get a male or female Goldendoodle? As with any dog breed, whether you should get a male or female dog depends on a lot of factors. You also have to make sure your potential new dog gets along with the existing dog which is often a real challenge, especially with rescues. Part of that is owed to fact that females are generally smaller than males. However, there are very calm males out there while females can have lots of behavioral issues, depending on their previous environment and training or lack thereof. Which is better: Goldendoodle or Labradoodle? Both breeds are created with the Poodle as foundation and the Golden Retriever on one side and the Labrador on the other side. Goldendoodles are not hypoallergenic dog breeds. The first-generation Groodle always inherits the shedding gene from the golden retriever and sheds everything from a small number to an almost complete retriever. Because F1s always almost shed, I recommend getting a genetically coat-tested doodle from multiple generations. What are the Labeling standards for Goldendoodle Generations? It can be confusing at first, but it gets easier once you get used to it. The Number Numbers are the main indicator of the generation to which Goldendoodle belongs. For instance, number 1 indicates the 1st generation while 2 indicates the 2nd generation. This letter means backcross. It indicates that the Goldendoodle generation needs to be returned to the purebred poodle. Gene mixing tends to reduce the health risks that might be associated with the purebred specimen The Shedding: The majority range from Light to Heavy shedding Potential for Allergy: For a family with Severe to moderate allergies, I do not recommend getting this Generation. However, it is okay for a family with mild allergies. The Coat: Their coat can be naturally grown from inches, and they would require regular grooming and combing. You can choose to trim the fur coat every couple of months. This could help reduce maintenance costs for your Groodle. The Grooming: Moderate-High grooming is required. For an F1 Goldendoodle, the b would mean that it was bred back to a parent purebred. It could either be a purebred retriever or a purebred poodle. Genetically, It means they are still the first generation. However, the characteristics of either the poodle or the retriever are enhanced. Some breeders often cross a Groodle and Poodle to increase the possibility of having lower-shedding litters. That means the level of shedding reflects the level of a First generation low — high shedding. When a breeder coat tests the pups, this factor may be apparent in the first few weeks of life. It can be anywhere over 35 inches and could become curly, straight, or wavy. If you are worried about how often you brush their fur, you can choose to trim the fur to save grooming time and make your dog comfortable, especially during winter. However, the first-generation backcross remains a mystery. If the F1b parent is not genetically tested, the litter may be an F1b litter or an F2 litter similar to the F2 litter above. Genetic health screening is also increasingly important when mixing two parents of the same ancestry. Potential for Allergy: Working with breeders to coat test pups and parents is the safest way for families with allergies to adopt F2b pups. Otherwise, the possibility of taking a hypoallergenic pet home does not favor you. The Coat: The coat might be wavy, curly, or straight. The Grooming: Requires average to high maintenance.
