I have a 4 month old puppy called Charlie. He is lovely. Seems very healthy and bright and approaches everything in life with great enthusiasm. I have had a black Labrador before, many, many years ago, when I was a kid — and my mum did all the work and worrying. That Labrador was from a big farm in North Yorkshire and I guess he was from "working lines". I feed Charlie on Royal Canin kibble which is what the breeder used and he gets loads and loads of treats — at puppy class clicker training, for walking without pulling, for peeing and pooing outside. Should it be about the same weight chicken for kibble? At 4 months, Charlie is the same weight 17kg now as the girl puppy that the breeder kept for herself. The breeder says that based on his mum and dad, she would guess Charlie will end up weighing, when he is grown, about 35kg. The vet says he is not too fat and is fine, and the vet nurse says the same. Is there anything else I can do to check that he is not overweight? The best way to tell is by eye and touch. Have a look at your dog and compare him with the picture below of a healthy Labrador. Look at your dog from the side. The skull is moderately rounded with a long, straight muzzle. Jaws are strong with a scissor bite. Their eyes are oval in shape, and usually dark in color. Neck and shoulders are strong and long enough to carry the head high with dignity. The body has a muscular squarely built appearance. The chest is deep and wide with well-sprung ribs. The top line of the back is level from the shoulder blades to base of tail. The bones and muscles of both hind legs and forelegs are in proportion to its size. The tail is straight and carried up sometimes docked of length to insure a balanced outline. Their feet are rather small and oval in shape. Toes are arched, with thick hard pads for good cushioning. Dewclaws are generally removed. Toy Poodles make very rewarding pets. In spite of their small size, the Toy Poodle has retained the independent personality of large Poodles, and is an affectionate, playful companion. Of course, local pickup is always available in Northeast Alabama. We place quality above quantity and usually have puppies only twice a year. All litters have at least 1 AKC Champion parent. We do not produce "parti poodles" as they are outside of the official AKC Standard for Toy Poodles and a disqualifying trait in the show rings. Age of Adoption All puppies must be at least 8 weeks of age AND weigh 2 lbs or more in order to be adopted. Shipping is available. We occasionally have retired spayed or neutered adults or rescue toy poodles that we may be looking to place in a good home. The price for these dogs will vary but will be a nominal fee just enough to cover any vet expenses incurred to bring the dog up to date on vaccines, spay and neuter, or dental procedures. Cost of Puppies A careful breeder will spend as much money on their dogs if not more than they earn from litters born. These expenses come from vet bills, thorough health testing , quality care and living conditions, AKC Dog Show competitions, dog handler fees, and the list goes on. In purchasing an Abounding Poodle , you get a quality dog from tested lines. You can buy a lot of "cheap" dogs from a Backyard Breeder who does not invest money into their breeding stock. You won't know what you are getting, and may end up paying thousands of dollars in vet bills later after you have fallen in love with the puppy. This is not the time to hunt for a bargain. We price our puppies taking in consideration the type of contract and registration full, limited, or none , their genetics, conformation pet or show quality , age, and size.
