She shows great potential but would do better if allowed exercise to calm her busy brain before being asked to focus. I think she would be best with older children only. She likes to jump up and lick your face when she is anxious or needs to check back in with you. We are working on correcting that habit but she can't get any exercise right now which doesn't help. She also can be a bit mouthy and she has tried to catch hold of my sleeve not my arm a few times. Surprisingly though, she doesn't bite down on your hand when taking a treat. Your whole hand can end up in her mouth with her exuberance to get the food. But, at least she doesn't bite down on you. She is very food motivated and very food-focused right now. She will try to take food away from my dog so she would do best with a dog that is not food protective. I think she would do fine in a house with other dogs that tolerate teen rough-housing, or in a house without other dogs. She could use the exercise provided by a pack but would be fine if you plan on being that exercise source. She does very well with our routine and knows where she's supposed to be and, most importantly, which meal is supposed to come next. Did I mention she's food fixated? She is not the best gardening buddy. Her favorite thing is to sit right in front of you, right on the dirt you just dug up so you could plant something, sticks her nose in the dirt to check the news, and then tries to give you a kiss right on the mouth. She will help dig though! She is prey driven, however, so she does keep the rabits, birds, and squirrels away from the garden very well. Hard toys only for this pup. She eviscerated a stuffy, grabbed up the pieces and chomped like she was going to swallow them in less than a minute. Fortunately, she is also very distractable with the promise of food of course. She also is very attentive to every rabbit and squirrel she sees and tends to pull hard after them on a leash. She is scheduled for her spay and we are working on her leash skills, and she should be available for adoption soon. Charlie Charlie is an adorable golden mix who arrived as a stray from a local shelter. He does seem to have some anxiety about being left alone, but that is improving. He needs to be neutered and should be ready for adoption soon. We are just getting to know him, and so far, he is a very sweet boy. He does tend to bark at strangers which can be intimidating but warms up fairly quickly. He will soon be scheduled for his neuter surgery, and he should be ready for adoption afterward. He is very fearful like the others but learning to trust while he gets all the care and TLC he needs. It will likely be months before Elvis is ready for adoption, but we know we will get him there. Kate Kate is a beautiful young golden who is approximately a year old. Because she was not properly socialized, she is quite fearful of everything around her. Collars, leashes, and living in a loving home are completely new to her. But thanks to her wonderful foster home, she is learning how good things can be and we look forward to finding her forever home. Remmi Remmi is an adorable little golden mix from a rural shelter in Brunswick County. He needs to complete his heartworm treatment before he is ready for adoption. At less than a year old, we know his personality and coat will shine as he gets the love and TLC he needs. She is learning to trust her foster dad and canine foster sibling, while she gets the care she needs. We are working on her socialization with people, as she is also quite fearful. He is quite shy and unsocialized but makes progress every day. Because he is still very afraid of being on a leash, his vet care is being provided by a mobile veterinarian who comes to the house. We are so grateful to them and his foster family for showing Opie how good life can be. Thomas aka Tommy Tommy is a brand-new arrival from a local shelter. He was very sad in the shelter but has settled in well with his foster. Max Max arrived to us in late March from an owner who could no longer care for her. Certainly for my first dog he's 5 now that was the mainstream approach but more recently I'm seeing a lot more advice from behaviourists and trainers to be with your dog until they have the confidence to settle on their own. For some that's having the dog upstairs by the bed, for me this meant sleeping on the sofa close to my most recent puppy now approaching 2 until he was quiet at night. He wasn't very quiet at all as a young dog but I think I still only slept downstairs for a couple of weeks. Don't worry at all that you haven't done this at this point I only mention it as you may reconsider what you choose to do if he's noisy at night in the future. I posted a new thread yesterday "Ted. I made up a bed opposite his crate in our kitchen diner, but before that made sure he's peed and pooed outside, and did some clicker work with him settling in the crate. So far so good. I closed the crate after leaving a kibble-filled Kong with him. I also left a dimmed lamp on. He started on the Kong and I settled down to "sleep". He actually made very short work of the kibble lesson for next time - use some treat he has to work to reach! Almost immediately he started whining. I was determined this time that my wife would sleep through the night, so where I probably normally have ignored him, I sat up and did some more clicker work to quieten him down. I'll probably hear, when my wife gets up, that the sound of the clicker kept her awake! This worked for a bit, then he started again. That's how it went off and on for much of the night. Neither man nor dog got much sleep. At no time though was Ted anywhere near as loud and distressed as the night before. He was clearly not happy being in a closed crate and made a bid to chew away the fastener! I let him out at 5 and he's peed and pooed outside already, and run about like a demented thing, with chewy toys.
