We specialize in breeding Mini Goldendoodles as well as a few other breeds. We also have partnered up with several other high quality breeders that raise mini goldendoodle pups that meet our strict genetic criteria and testing. So we usually have a good selection of very high quality puppies. View Our Available Puppies! Not all mini Goldendoodles are equal, there are a few different versions to choose from each having a little different genetic background based on the pups parents. We will explain all the differences in Mini Goldendoodle puppies and how they are bred below. We raise all versions of the mini goldendoodle breed. F1 Mini Goldendoodle Pups. A F1 puppy is also known as a First Generation puppy. The puppies mother is a Golden Retriever and the pups dad is a Mini Poodle. This version of mini goldendoodle usually has soft wavy or curly puppy fur. They will shed until they lose their puppy fur, after shedding they will shed a lot less, but will shed. This version is partially hypoallergenic and usually requires low maintenance. F1 mini goldendoodles usually need to be groomed every 6 months along with daily brushing to keep their curly hair from matting and getting tangled. The dogs usually grow up having great temperaments similar to golden retrievers. They usually get about inches high at the shoulder and range in weight from pounds. F1b Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1b is known as a second-generation mini goldendoodle with the pups mother being already an F1 Goldendoodle and the pups dad being a mini poodle also. So the difference between F1 and F1b is that the mom is not a golden retriever but an actual F1 Goldendoodle. They also have very soft curly hair but with almost no shedding. This F1b version is semi-hypoallergenic and a better choice for anyone who has pet allergies. The F1b also should be brushed on a daily basis but will need to be groomed more frequently then a F1. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is recommended to keep their coat in perfect condition. F1b Mini goldendoodles get around 18 to 20 inches tall at the shoulders and range between pounds in weight. F1bb Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1bb goldendoodle is also known as a third-generation mini goldendoodle. This mini goldendoodle version has a coat more similar to a poodle than of a golden retriever. This is because the pup is more of a poodle than a retriever. Making it the very best version for anyone with pet allergies. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is required to help prevent knots or matting. This version is super intelligent and loving, and usually seems to have more energy than the other versions of Mini goldendoodles. This version is usually smaller in size, weighing around pounds and only getting inches tall at the shoulders. The smaller size makes them a great size for smaller homes and apartments. Below are some Mini Goldendoodle Pups that have been adopted! They inherited their calm and gentle trait from their Golden Retriever father and their intelligent trait from their Miniature Poodle mother. This breed has grown in popularity and makes a perfect family pet who trains well and loves his family. Personality and Temperament The Miniature Goldendoodle has an affectionate, sweet, gentle, and happy personality. This breed enjoys the companionship of their family and other dogs in the household. They seek your attention and care and show it by giving the same back. They make marvelous family pets and adapt well to apartment-style and conventional style housing. With Miniature Poodle and Golden Retriever parents, both known for their amazing qualities, the Mini Goldendoodle is sure to fit right in with your family and other pets. A good routine to get into is a quick morning brush when he wakes up, a bi-weekly bath, and monthly nail clipping. This will allow your pup to look and feel great and is a great way to assure long-term health. This breed can be found in a variety of colors ranging from red, black, sable, tannish brown, and cream tones. Their beautiful colored coats tend to glisten and are certainly eye-catching. Care and Feeding Miniature Goldendoodles should be fed twice a day at about the same time. Two to four total cups of food each day will help this dog stay fit and have ample energy. The actual amount of food will ultimately depend on his activity level, size, and age which means it will fluctuate throughout the years. Never forget the importance of routine teeth cleaning, which should occur three times weekly. Like anything, the more you do this, the easier it becomes for you and your pup. This breed weighs fifteen to thirty-five pounds. Mini Goldendoodles have an average life expectancy of ten to fifteen years. Interesting Breed Facts Fact: This Miniature Goldendoodle is known for its ability to aid humans as service dogs and seeing-eye dogs. They have been of great assistance over the years for people that have Autism, PTSD, and anxiety issues. You want to choose one carefully as their breeding practices will have an impact on the temperament and health of your Mini Goldendoodle puppy. Start by looking at online sources such as Google reviews, online forums, discussion groups and social media platforms to see what other people are saying about the breeder. Did they have a good experience buying from them? To take your research a bit further, you can ask Goldendoodle organizations and clubs based in your area about their opinion of the breeder you are considering to purchase from. Many Goldendoodle clubs also have their own lists of responsible breeders so they can give you additional recommendations for good Mini Goldendoodle breeders. You may also consider visiting some dog shows and events as they are a good opportunity to meet breeders in person and see their Mini Goldendoodles. You can also ask other dog owners that are showing their Mini Goldendoodles for breeder recommendations. Finally, ask potential breeders for references and consider contacting these people to ask about their experience with the breeder. Reputable breeders always prioritize the well-being of their dogs and strive for positive reviews. You should inquire about temperament and health of the Mini Goldendoodles these people purchased. Use this information to make an informed decision. All reputable Mini Goldendoodle breeders conduct them on their breeding dogs — whether they are breeding from purebred Golden Retrievers for F1 Goldendoodles and Poodles or from Goldendoodles for later generations like F2 Goldendoodles. A stipulates the health testing requirements for Goldendoodles and if the breeder is registered with G. A, you know that the breeding dogs have undergone full health testing. A heart clearance O. Ask to see documentation of these clearances before purchasing from a Mini Goldendoodle breeder. All responsible breeders should be willing to provide any health documentation. They should also be happy to answer any questions you have about their breeding program. However, if you have the opportunity to check out the facilities you should do it. Check that the kennels are clean, that they dogs and puppies have access to fresh water and also that there is not a build up of feces or urine. Comfortable living conditions: The breeder should keep their Mini Goldendoodles, Golden Retrievers and Poodles in comfortable living conditions. They should have large, comfortable kennels or dog beds and also have a decent amount of space to exercise and socialize with other dogs. Healthy breeding dogs and puppies: If you get the opportunity to meet the parents of the Mini Goldendoodle litter you are interested in, make sure they are well-tempered and also healthy. Sometimes the mother will be quite protective of her puppies so she may show signs of aggression. If you are purchasing a puppy online and getting it delivered, ask if the breeder would be happy to video call you or send videos of their Mini Goldendoodle puppies and breeding dogs to you. Ask About Socialization Mini Goldendoodle breeders should begin the socialization process before their puppies are sold. The puppies should be exposed to a wide variety of sounds, experiences, people and places so they can adjust to their new homes and adult life. Nevertheless, they should start exposing them to sounds like household appliances, provide mental stimulation with toys and games and also encourage playtime and interactions with their littermates and family. The most common ones are: Lack of registration: If a Mini Goldendoodle breeder cannot provide registration papers or other relevant documentation, it may be a sign that they are not operating a reputable breeding program. Overbreeding: Think twice about purchasing from a Mini Goldendoodle breeder who always has puppies available or offers an excessive amount of dog breeds. This may suggest that the breeder is overly focused on profit instead of the health and wellbeing of their puppies. Lack of health checks: A reputable Mini Goldendoodle breeder will conduct health clearances on their breeding dogs to ensure they are free of genetic health issues that could be passed on. If a breeder cannot provide documentation of these health checks, it may be a sign that they are not prioritizing health.
Apply to Adopt A little about us.Genuine Australian labradoodle puppy breeder since .Located in Monterey, California just two hours south of San Francisco. We are a small in-house breeder specializing in breeding miniature to medium labradoodles from the seeing eye dog Australian lines. We do not ship our puppies but will meet new owners at the airport. We average four to five litters a year. This gives us the time to complete early neurological stimulation starting at three days and desensitizing to fireworks, thunderstorms, etc. We give each litter and each puppy the love and attention it needs during those first irreplaceable eight weeks of your puppy's life. We take great responsibility in giving every puppy the best start in order to grow into a well-adjusted, highly socialized, and healthy member of your family for many years to come. Our puppies are born in our bedroom, raised in our kitchen and get the best of care and lots of handling from their first day. We not only guarantee genetic health but also have very strict requirements for the temperaments of the breeding dogs in our program. Puppies are examined by a veterinarian, vaccinated, and micro chipped before going home. About Australian Labradoodles.Australian Labradoodles are beautiful, healthy, allergy and asthma friendly. They were originally bred to be service dogs and not a 'designer' pet. The Labradoodle breed started with a request over thirty years ago by a family needing a seeing eye dog but who also had a family member with asthma. After some research and years of breeding by leading service dog breeders, Tegan Park and Rutland Manor in Australia, the Australian Labradoodle was born. Our top goal is excellent health, fantastic temperament, and service qualities. Just like any other breed that becomes popular, though, some breeders have started breeding for the popularity of these dogs and not for the benefit of the breed itself. So here's how to make sure you're getting the dog you want. Here are some helpful tips to understand what a breeder means when they are using these phrases. The multi-generation Australian Labradoodle, which is the original Labradoodle, has a foundation stock including six different parent breeds. These dogs were developed in Australia, and hence the "Australian" in the name of the dogs. This was a breed that was developed with goals in mind for a low shedding service dog, not a designer dog. The multi-generation Labradoodle has only poodle and lab in its heritage. It does not include the other parent breeds that were originally used by the creators of the breed. These have been primarily developed later in the U. These dogs tend to shed their coat since they are more closely related to the Labrador and often have a wire hair look to them. The "Back Cross" or "F1B" is a dog from an F1 see above mated back to a poodle usually for coat correction. These dogs have not had the multiple generations of Labradoodle mated with another Labradoodle nor the addition of Australian Labradoodle foundation stock or multiple parent breeds. With 17 years of experience in breeding Australian Labradoodles, we pride ourselves on selecting only the best dogs for our breeding program, which in turn ensures that we are producing the best puppies imaginable. We work closely with our licensed vet to perform health testing, including hip and elbow testing; eyes, heart, skin, and patella testing; and a series of genetic tests, on all of our breeding dogs. We provide a temperature controlled, in home my master bedroom environment, with sound therapy to expose your puppy to lifes sounds from an early age. This helps desensitize your puppy to the sounds of life traffic, fireworks, outdoor machinery, crying baby, misc appliances, automobiles, etc. We start crate training at 5 weeks with a soothing heartbeat snuggle puppy to comfort them as they transition to sleeping alone and all the puppies love it and sleep better with minimal crying. We add nutrients and special additives for puppies to their drinking water. We add probiotics to their food for a healthy GI tract and immune system. We make special liver water, gruel, with puppy supplements, dog milk formula to their nutritionally dense food to support eyes, ear, bone, joint, coat and heart health. We expose your puppy to sunlight daily on the deck right outside the puppy nursery area. There is always a plush bedding for their cozy comfort in their play areas for those impromptu naps puppies love. Our puppies are held and played with while being bathed and exposed to water, in our walk-in shower, which builds a positive experience, with water, for their lifetime. Bath time is with a human sitting in this large shower allowing plenty of space for your puppy too roam around and enjoy water in a nurturing experience. The puppies love it instead of being in a sink with a dry human just washing them. Water is actual playtime while they get clean and build positive experiences with being wet. Instead we utilize Puppy Culture, Badass Breeder protocols and tons of love from humans that are passionate and dedicated to what they do. Please feel free to contact us with any questions. We look forward to providing you with your fury best friend! When full grown, these health tested, Australian Labradoodle puppies will be approximately pounds with wavy fleece coats, curly fleece coats or the occasional straighter hair fleece coats. In July , Kiah, my Australian Shepherd, was killed and the opportunity to adopt a miniature Labradoodle named Daphne came along. Needless to say, I fell in love with the little bundle of joy that helped me get through the loss of my best friend Kiah. My family had always planned on breeding Australian Shepherds, but after bonding with Daphne and meeting other Labradoodles, I was quickly hooked and Ocean View Labradoodles was born. In , I went back to school for a degree in teaching and needed help if Ocean View was to continue. My parents took an interest in labradoodles as well and Ocean View Labradoodles became a family business. My mom, Sheri, is the main contact person for our puppy families now, especially during the school year! The whelping area is in my bedroom, the playpen when they get older is in the living room, and when the pups are old enough to venture outdoors, an outdoor run area is made available to them during the day. They are introduced to a litter box early on, which will get them started on potty training before they leave Ocean View for their new homes. They will also be socialized with our other dogs, our cat, and children of all ages to provide them with as many experiences as possible to lessen their stress when they leave our home. They have been groomed at least twice by the time they join your family. We feed both our parent dogs and our puppies a holistic dry dog food. Lets Bark About It. A Serious Case of Puppy Love. Ensure that they get enough daily activity to release energy, like running in the park or playing fetch with a frisbee. Be patient when teaching tricks, as this can take time for some dogs who are more stubborn than others. Play games with them so that they can learn how to solve problems creatively by thinking outside of the box—but not too much! Give them interactive toys- such as puzzle boxes, treat-dispensing toys, or ones within other toys that will require their brainpower while still having fun—to keep things fresh. Do Boxers ever calm down? Boxers are known for being energetic and full of energy. Are Boxers smart or dumb? Boxers are a loyal and independent breed. Although Boxers may lack obedience, working intelligence, or some other canine skillset that you might need for your current living situation — these dogs have the potential to be great learners if given enough time and experience! Left natural, their tails can grow too long and narrow, which leads them to injuries such as skin ulcers from constant contact with furniture, for example. Do Boxers need another dog? When it comes to Boxers, the question of another dog is never one that should be answered lightly. Indeed, most dogs are OK with other family pets and even children albeit some breeds may need more socialization than others. However, for a breed as dominant or aggressive towards same-sex members of their species as Boxers can often be — not to mention cat chasers in many cases — there will always need someone around who is willing to provide leadership! Unfortunately, it may be difficult for dogs with these symptoms because their balance and motor control will deteriorate quickly by this point due to an illness such as rabies. Breeders can charge differently for each of these three types of Boxers. Also, Boxers are mostly found in various shades of fawn color like pale red, mahogany and tan and these different colors can also influence the Boxer dog price in India. Hence, age is also a crucial factor in deciding the price of a dog. Also, it is seen that many breeders sell male dogs at a greater price as compared to female pooches. Pure or Mix Breed The cost of a purebred Boxer is higher than the mixed-breed as there are lesser chances for a purebred puppy to develop hereditary health problems as compared to the one that is mixed-breed. Availability and Location Those dogs which are bought from a breeder that is closer to the location of the customer generally cost less as compared to the canines who are bought from a far-away place from a different state or region and it is because of the extra charges that add on to the initial cost of the canine. These extra charges can be shipping cost, traveling expenses et cetera. Also, the availability of a dog is again a very important factor. Dogs that are easily available generally cost less as compared to the canines that are not very easy to found. In case of Boxers, they have a decent availability in most parts of India, hence their overall price is fairly less as compared to some other breeds which are considered to be a bit rare in the country. Reputed Breeder Many popular and reputed breeders are also known to sell dogs at a fairly higher price as compared to other breeders who are not so well known. But as buying a dog from a reputed breeder generally means you are getting a fully healthy and fit canine, people don't usually mind spending a little bit extra on their future furry friends. Miscellaneous Factors Champion Bloodline: If a dog belongs to a champion bloodline, meaning any of its predecessors forefathers were given the title of Champion in an official dog event, then its price can also go fairly high. Microchip: The price of a dog can also increase if it has been microchipped by the KCI. The extremely small pet microchip helps in providing a permanent ID for your pet. They have a well-built outer structure and strong and sturdy overall body which complements athleticism and their enthusiastic character. This breed is very popular all over the world and their demand and availability in India are also pretty high. The section below will help you in deciding whether this breed is right for you or not. Reasons that might make a Boxer suitable for you: Boxers are extremely adaptable and adjustable canines who are fairly apartment-friendly in nature. They are highly affectionate and friendly towards their loved ones and are also kind and gentle with the small kids. These canines are very loyal to the ones whom they can easily trust. They possess a pretty decent watchdog ability and are considered awesome guard dogs. Their grooming requirements are minimal. Training them is not that hard as they are mostly very agreeable and responsive during the training sessions. Reasons that might make a Boxer ill-suited for you: These canines are not very affable and warm towards other dogs as they feel challenged by them. But, through training, these dogs can learn how to be friendly with other pooches also. Their exercise needs are very high and should be provided to them on a daily basis. And, this can be a little inconvenient for some people. Popular Category Post. As a Boxer parent, do not compromise with the food you give your pet. They Hardly Bark This might come as a shock to you, considering the build and personality of Boxers. While a Boxer can look intimidating and makes a perfect guard dog, it does not bark a lot. Owing to their unconditional love and loyalty, Boxers can do anything to keep their owners and their families safe. A Boxer at home is bound to make you feel safe as it will immediately alert you about potential danger. Moreover, the breed can be intimidating enough to prevent potential trespassers from getting anywhere near Boxers! Boxers possess unmatched energy and require their daily dose of exercise. They love accompanying their owners for walks, jogs, runs, and hikes. If you take your Boxer out, it is bound to exhaust you before it gets tired! You can also take your pet out for games with other members of your family. Being silly and goofy comes naturally to Boxers. They need not try too hard to make everyone around them smile. If you are having a bad day, your Boxer puppy might sense it and do its best to make you chuckle. Wherever a Boxer goes, it makes the environment breezy and entertaining. Boxers Are Highly Intelligent Bred to be hunting dogs used for catching larger animals, Boxers are extremely intelligent. Their reflexes and intuitions are well-developed, making them excellent bull-baiting dogs, police dogs, seeing-eye dogs, and cattle control dogs. If you do not want your Boxer puppy to turn into a stubborn pet, make sure you train it while it is still young and obedient. Boxers are highly excitable and require at least 90 to minutes of exercise every day. The best way to make your pet exercise is by taking it out for walks twice a day. It is also advisable to indulge your Boxer in physical activities, such as games, hikes, runs, etc. Ignoring this need for regular exercise will make your Boxer puppy obese and lead to a host of health complications. Boxers Can Develop Aggression Issues Owing to their lineage, Boxers can get aggressive if they are not trained well as puppies. Being high-energy dogs, Boxers need physical activities as an outlet for their energy, the absence of which can make them aggressive. Boxers also have dominance issues along with aggression. This is why it is not advisable to leave your pet without a leash when you take it outside. If its wild instinct kicks in, your Boxer can cause harm to strangers and other animals on the road. They require a lot of social time with humans and are not independent dogs by any stretch of the imagination. You can expect your Boxer puppy to follow you around and demand your attention throughout the day. If you keep busy for most part of the day, make sure your pet receives the attention it demands. The Need For Physical And Mental Stimulation It is common for Boxers to turn destructive if they do not receive enough exercise and mental stimulation. Even if you provide the right socialization and obedience training to your Boxer puppy, you will need to be aware of its stimulation throughout its life. Apart from causing harm to other people and animals, Boxers can also damage your property. Along with making sure your pet has enough company throughout the day, you can always give it mentally stimulating toys to keep it occupied and calm. Boxers Develop Separation Anxiety Boxers demand a lot of attention from their owners and develop separation anxiety if they do not receive the same. They are not the kind of dogs who have their own private space and let you enjoy your privacy. If no one attends to your pet for a long time, it may become sulky and irritable. It is common for Boxers to develop feelings of worthlessness and dismay when they are not given enough attention by their owners. With a Boxer at home, do not leave it alone for a long time. If you are bringing a Boxer puppy home, keep it indoors as the breed is sensitive to heat and cold. Moreover, keeping your Boxer outside minimizes social interaction, further making your pet irritable and destructive. Age-wise Food And Care For Boxers Boxers were originally bred to accompany hunters in their expeditions, especially when it came to catching animals like deer and boars. The breed has always required a solid diet, making it important for Boxer parents to feed their pets well. It is advisable to feed your Boxer puppy a balanced diet from the beginning. Give your furry friend kibble that is rich in proteins, fats, amino acids, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins, and water. Especially during its growth years, do not compromise on the quality and quantity of food you give your Boxer puppy. Ask your dog breeder or vet regarding the specific details of the kind of food that best suits your Boxer. Along with what you feed it, the frequency at which you do so matters a lot at different stages of its life. Here is the feeding routine you should follow for your Boxer throughout its lifespan: Under 8 Weeks Until your Boxer puppy turns two months old, it is better to free-feed it. You need not have a structured diet for your pet at this stage of its life. These are the growing months of your dog and it should eat well to grow into a strong and healthy pet. Between 2 And 12 Months Once your Boxer puppy turns older than two months, you can start adding a structure to its diet. You can now start feeding your pet four meals every day. Make sure you keep track of the food your Boxer eats and prevent it from over-eating. Between 12 And 24 Months As your Boxer gets older than a year, you need to reduce its diet to three meals per day. While you can give it treats and snacks in between, do not allow your pet to eat more than its dietary requirements. Above 24 Months After turning into an adult, your Boxer should not eat more than two meals every day. As your pet will never refuse food, make sure you monitor what it eats closely. To help you decide whether or not owning a Cane Corso German Shepherd mix is a good idea, we have gathered some of its pros and cons. When combined with its nature as a working dog, you get a family pet and a dog suitable for service work. Their protective streak, vigilance, and alertness help them protect their owners from perceived threats. Fairly easy to maintain: German Corsos are fairly easy to maintain when it comes to grooming. Although they tend to shed throughout the year, it is usually manageable. As for their health upkeep, you only need to bring them to the vet once in a while and provide them with enough activities as they enjoy training and exercise. Meanwhile, these are the cons of a German Corso that you should also take into consideration: Prone to aggression: German Corsos without proper training and socialization are prone to aggression towards other animals. While they are not likely to attack people directly, they might still cause danger to children and other dogs smaller than them. For this reason, they require dog owners who have experience in handling guard dogs. Not suitable for apartment living: This hybrid is a large working dog that constantly needs activity in wider spaces. When cooped in a small space, they tend to get bored, leading to destructive behavior. They also tend to bark a lot, which could be a nuisance even for owners themselves. Do not get along with cats and smaller animals: As dogs with high prey drive, powerful jaws, and hunting and herding instincts, they are mostly incompatible with cats and other pets of small sizes. This is why proper socialization with other pets is important. Weighing the pros and cons is essential before ultimately deciding whether the German Corso is the right dog for you. When you choose to purchase one, this will also help you prepare for what lies ahead. The most important factor when you get one of these dogs is discovering a reputable breeder. Often when you get crossbreed like this, these dogs can come from poor situations due to backyard breeding or puppy mill situations. When this happens, the puppies are usually very unhealthy with questionable temperaments. The dogs are typically kept in less than favorable conditions, which can rack up much more vet costs down the line. And by purchasing from these types of breeders, you are supporting the continuing of this practice. So, always make sure to screen for a reputable breeder. Both parent breeds are excellent guard dogs. Both parent breeds are from Europe. Cane Corsos are brachycephalic, while German Shepherds have long snouts. They might be goofy and friendly with their family, those they consider a part of their pack. However, when it comes to outsiders, they will be highly selective on who they deem worthy of hanging out. These dogs are brilliant, picking up on training concepts with ease. Because they care so much about what their owners think, they are generally incredibly obedient and eager to please. Your assurance means more to them than anything else. So they are very likely to listen to you if you tell them the situation is acceptable. However, they can be a little stubborn from time to time. When it comes to the looks of the German Shepherd and Cane Corso , these hybrids look like very amiable dogs. But they can sometimes be a little temperamental with strangers. And they might be selective about who is allowed to have their attention. Of course, there are always exceptions to this rule. Some dogs in this crossbreed might be silly and outgoing, not really taking an issue with strangers at all. Are These Dogs Good for Families? They work equally as well with single owners. However, due to their size and energy levels, we do not recommend them for older adults. These dogs make loving, loyal companion animals who fiercely devote themselves to their family unit. They do surprisingly well with children, taking on a parental role most of the time. And due to their high energy levels, they can make fantastic backyard playmates. As with any canine, supervision is necessary with smaller children. These dogs take a while to grow into their feet and can knock down younger children by accident. We recommend this breed for ages 6 and older. We also want to point out that if you adopt an older dog of this breed, you definitely want to make sure they match with every person in your home. This mix does incline to attach itself to one group of people, or a person. If the dog is rehomed, it might take a long time for them to warm up. Some dogs might exhibit territorial aggression or not get along and same-sex pairs. However, you can curb this tendency if they are exposed to new situations early on. These dogs might have a high prey drive, often making them incompatible with cats and smaller animals. You will need to keep a close eye on any interactions with smaller pets as they have powerful jaws. Even if they are playing, it can end up badly for a smaller pet. The history of Cane Corso or the Italian Mastiff dates back to the 1st century when large Mastiff-like dogs were used for war and hunting purposes. These dogs are purebred, and they produced a group of modern-day Mastiffs like the Cane Corso, Italiano, and Rottweiler. Intelligent, trainable, and loyal are the traits that always make the Cane Corso puppy grow into an excellent watchdog, guard dog, and family pet. They were developed as working dogs, used for herding and guarding sheep. German Shepherds were and still are admired for their intelligence, easy trainability, stamina, and boldness. They were used for herding, as security, for search and rescue, as guides for the blind, and they fulfilled many other roles as well. Nowadays, the German Shepherd is still a very popular dog in the States, all thanks to its intelligence, loyalty, and affection towards dog owners. Parent Breeds As Working Dogs Both German Shepherds and the Cane Corso have been bred as working dogs with their main purpose to guard and protect families and their property. Both breeds were also used in hunting and as cattle herders. Thanks to decades of selective breeding, their crossbreed puppies now have wonderful traits to inherit. Dogs with such important roles had to be smart, decisive, confident, dominant, intuitive, and have a strong desire to be leaders and work alongside people. Both breeds were even used in civil wars and conflicts in the forces or as messengers. With lots of proper training, the Cane Corso German Shepherd mix can be successful in police work, search and rescue, service work, helping people with disabilities, etc. These doggies need to work. The same goes for the German Corso. Still, there are some traits we can still predict, thanks to the insight we have on the parent breeds. The German Corso is supposed to be a big dog with much strength. Males are always larger than females and very muscular. Other physical traits can vary. Genetics can influence whether a dog will have a round or elongated head, whether the muzzle be short or long, if the ears will stay erect or be floppy, and what the body shape will be like, etc. The German Shepherd dogs have a medium-length, double-layered coat. Therefore, you can expect your hybrid puppy to have a short to medium-length double coat. Both parents come in a variety of colors. Cane Corsos can come in blue, black, fawn, or brindle. GSDs are usually tan or tan and black. They may come in solids like blue or red, without the black markings. With the prevalence of solid darks, the German Corso may be black, tan, or brindle. Puppies that pass proper training and socialization in time are more likely to become great additions to any family and loyal sidekicks. German Corsos are very loyal and dependable canines. However, they have a tendency to attach themselves to one family member. Since both parents were working dogs in the past, it is important to find an occupation for your German Corso too. Another nasty habit bored German Corsos have is their tendency to bark a lot. Trust us — they can bark for hours! Also, this is not a breed for first-time dog owners. They will be too energetic from time to time, and that requires a family with spare time to exercise them and have them deplete their energy bar. The Cane Corso and German Shepherd are known for their high prey drive. Also, the German Corso may have hunting and herding instincts that kick in from the past. The Cane Corso parent gets along with other large dogs just fine, but the GSD parent is a problematic one, and it often expresses aggressive behavior. Still, socialization is imperative in all cases. Since both parent dogs get along with kids just fine, you can expect their hybrid puppy to act the same. But, supervision when playing is important, especially if the kids are small. If you have kids in your household, you should discourage chasing habits. They should be socialized from a young age to adapt well to other dogs and animals. The best time to start training your puppy is around the month milestone. Insisting on training and repeating commands too many times might result in your puppy becoming frustrated. It affects the training long-term. All the training done before the age of 10 months should be done through games, so make sure your pup is excited and interested to play. This will be an excellent basis for the upcoming training and a great opportunity to create a lasting bond. As the puppy grows up, some age-appropriate and breed-appropriate training should be done. You should also become more strict and confident and always use a stern tone that dogs notice and understand. You may want to do a certain type of training depending on the type of work you want your German Corso to do. When training your Cane Corso German Shepherd mix, you should know that your voice is your biggest tool for training. The second is a scolding voice you use when the dog misbehaves. For the dog to understand all the tones, they must associate a certain tone with an action, i. There is actually no need to threaten your dog during training. Ignoring what the dog does or withdrawal of affection works like a charm. They always stop the unwanted behavior to please the owner and get love and attention in return. Commands you use during training should be short and easy to understand. It may lead to frustration and unwillingness for all future training attempts. These are dogs that value affection and love. Maybe the dog is unsure of something or afraid. The German Corso needs lots of exercise daily to remain a happy and healthy puppy. At least one hour of meaningful physical activity is needed a day. Take them on daily walks, give them space in a fenced yard to run around freely. And never let them get bored. This means this hybrid is not hypoallergenic and not the best choice for allergy sufferers. If your puppy has a short coat, you should brush it once a week. In the meantime, deodorizing dog wipes will quickly help you keep them clean and fresh. When it comes to clipping nails or trimming hair, you can do this yourself or ask a professional dog groomer to step in. High-quality dog food is advised for all dogs, and this mix will need three to four cups of dog food each day. The starting point should be feeding twice a day. The best choice you can make is to buy high-quality dog food rich in protein and omega-3 fatty acids. What most dog owners forget is to include probiotics in their daily nutrition as well. Cane Corso German Shepherd Mix: Common Health Problems Getting a hybrid puppy is a lottery; you never know which health issues the puppy will inherit from both parents. Take the German Corso, for example. Both parents are prone to bloat, elbow dysplasia, and hip dysplasia. The Cane Corso side of the family is also prone to eye problems like ectropion and entropion. On the other hand, the GSD is prone to hemophilia, epilepsy, cataracts, and degenerative disc disease. Also, a healthy lifestyle and regular vet checkups reduce the risk of these mentioned diseases, even one of the nastiest of them all — mange! A healthy Cane Corso German Shepherd mix may have a life expectancy anywhere between 9 to 13 years. Rescuing and adopting from a shelter is a rewarding experience for all dog lovers. It depends on the availability, the breeder, and any unique traits the puppy has. Finding a reputable and responsible breeder for German Corso is crucial as these dogs can have a personality that can be difficult to handle. A German Corso should be a smart dog, loyal to its owner, affectionate, brave, and confident. Never buy from puppy mills or backyard breeders. They only sell puppies to make a profit. Reputable breeders keep the puppies and dogs in a clean and safe environment. With continuous training and socialization, the German Corso can be an ideal choice for the right dog owner. The most important factor you should consider before getting a German Corso is the amount of time you have available because you will need to pay lots of attention to socializing and training, If you believe you can make it, who are we to stop you from getting this awesome puppy? Both the German Shepherd and the Cane Corso are now viewed generally as excellent guard or service dogs. But they are, in fact, both essentially herding dogs. Both these parent breeds of the German Shepherd Cane Corso Mix would have been seen herding not only cattle, sheep and goats but even ducks, hens and geese. Indeed this is still the job of some Germa n Shepherds, although the Cane Corso is now rarely used for herding. This may explain why both these dogs are good with small animals. You can therefore expect a German Corso to get along with other animals including any feline friends. It also explains why both these dogs are very good guard dogs linking to their previous role in guarding these herds. All dog lovers will agree that both the Cane Corso and the German Shepherd are wonderful breeds and do share some personality traits and characteristics, but there are also differences. So the following offers a general guide to the temperament of the German Corso with the caveat that a specific dog could favor either of the founding breeds more strongly temperament and behavior. The German Corso will inherit the hunting and herding instincts of its parent breeds. So this dog will never be happier than when chasing after a ball or Frisbee or running around with its human pack playing tug and searching games. The German Corso will be a large dog who is highly protective and tolerant towards children, although as ever, all play and interaction must be carefully supervised, particularly with very young children. Both parent breeds have a bone-crunching bite-force along with sheer size and bulk and consistent socialization strategies will help prevent any accidents. Although a friendly and playful companion the German Corso will quickly be able to switch on its protective instincts immediately when necessary. This dog is very likely to be suspicious of strangers This dog is also going to be very energetic although the natural excitability of the Cane Corso is likely to be softened by the more even temperament of the German Shepherd. The short answer for this high energy breed is plenty. Both parent breeds are very active and this dog will require around a couple of hours a day. Going through a reputable breeder for German Shepherd Cane Corso Mix puppies is vital as these pups may have certain personality traits that could be difficult to handle. Responsible breeders will only use dogs that show good character. A German Corso mixed breed dog should be intelligent, loyal, affectionate, brave and confident. Image Source Remember, puppy mills and backyard breeders only sell puppies to make money. When searching for a breeder, watch out for red flags such as premises selling puppies below the age of eight weeks and promises that puppies are always available. Good breeders keep their puppies and dogs in a clean environment. When getting your Corso Shepherd from a breeder, ask for a thorough health examination. Good breeders will also let you meet the parent dogs to ensure they are of good health and temperament. Conclusion Also known as the German Corso, the Cane Corso German Shepherd Mix is an intelligent, loyal, and affectionate dog that has the potential to be a great family pet. However, they are not ideal for beginners. This is an energetic breed that requires consistent training and exercise to shape them into a faithful canine companion. With continuous training and socialization, the German Corso can be a wonderful dog for the right owner. The most important factor to consider should be the amount of time you can commit to socializing and training your German Shepherd Cane Corso. If that is something you can offer your pup, then the German Corso can be a great choice for you. Checkout Our Favorite Dog Products 1. Our goal is to produce a good looking dog that possesses trainability and natural retrieving instincts for hunting, show, field competition and great family companions. Redlion Chesapeakes have long been known as a dual-purpose dog. Many dogs produced by our breeding stock or stud dogs compete in shows all over the country and have been ranked many times in the top 10 dogs in the US. Most are stocky, dependable hunters and great companions while others compete in hunt tests, shows and performance events. Many of the dogs compete in more than one venue at the same time. The Redlion Labradors are a combined effort of field trial breeding with some bred to Champion and Best in Show Labs with natural retrieving desire. I believe in a Dual-Purpose retriever and strive to prove that in today's Labrador. We have two beautiful girls still looking for their forever home. My husband and I fell in love with Golden Retrievers in .Our first daughter was five years old and after much research we decided to bring home a puppy. What we did not realize at the time was the unconditional, everlasting love and dedication we were going to experience. We had two more children and brought home another Golden puppy. I can't imagine having raised our children and grand children without our Golden Girls playing with, loving and watching over them. Our Golden Retrievers possess a calm, gentle, and very intuitive disposition. They adore children, people in general and truly live to love and be loved. We are not a kennel. Our girls and their puppies share our home with us and are held and loved from birth. We welcome new families to come visit, take pictures, and get ready for their new fur baby. Each of our Golden Girls and the Studs used for breeding are checked for genetic defects just as their grandparents, great grand parents and all previous generations. Our puppies come from extensive generations of Championship Lineage. Pedigree and Health Certifications presented and time of visit. We breed according to the standard of the Golden Retriever Club of America. We provide our puppies with a Comprehensive Health Examination, their first vaccination and de-worming before they go home with their new families at the age of 8 weeks. Quality Not Quantity Our aim is to breed dogs as near the breed standard as possible. As a small breeder, we at Bonsaviour aim to have approximately 3 to 4 litters per annum, selecting our Dam and Sire carefully and concentrating on quality, healthy puppies as a priority. Bonsaviour dogs are fed a natural BARF diet which is keeping them all extremely fit and well. The barf diet is based on raw meat and meaty bones along with a few vegetables and added vitamins. More about puppies About us At Bonsaviour all of our dogs are first and foremost our companions and their welfare and happiness is of paramount importance to us. We are dedicated and love our dogs they are part of our family, they all live inside our home and are cared for in the best possible way for health, happiness and temperament. Our puppies are reared naturally for true health and temperament and are used to the normal day to day living. The puppies are socialised with our grandchildren and all the normal noises such as the hoover and TV. When the puppies are 8 weeks old and are ready to move on to the new family we guarantee the puppy will be a confident healthy and happy puppy. Bonsaviour are committed, responsible breeders rearing our puppies on a natural diet as nature intended for health. We're based in a small village in the beautiful, wooded countryside of Neachley which is near the village of Albrighton in the County of Shropshire West Midlands UK. Golden Retriever Puppies are available all year round, all bred from parents not only of superb quality from long-established proven bloodlines, but also with wonderful temperaments - a factor on which we place great importance. Our puppies are bred with love for type, temperament, intelligence and health, making excellent companions, as well as being suitable for the various purposes for which these dogs are renowned. Retrievers are wonderful dogs with great temperaments and we are sure that you and your family will be happy to become Retriever Lovers. Our Buddy is a lively, loving and gentle boy. With a teenager attitude right now. We had a puppy from you last year. He was born in March and we picked him up in May. We called him Alfie. Any accolades gained are from our customer or Independant third party reviews. In the "Dog World", ferocious opinions clash all the time. Our philosophy can be digested from the following article. Some of our Retrievers Puppies Litters of puppies are planned very carefully and are born and raised in the house. Bonsaviour puppies are adapted to family life well before they leave us. We have an occasional litter each year, most often puppies are sold before they are born. Reserving a puppy from planned litters is recommended. If you are interested in a puppy, we will require some background information about yourself, your family members, your home and lifestyle, including where you live, whether you have owned a pet before, opportunities for exercise and when you hope to welcome a new addition to your home. We are very happy to help in the process of selecting a puppy that is right for you and your family. When you purchase a puppy from Bonsaviour we will always be here to offer support for you and your puppy and help with any questions you might have for the life ofyour puppy and beyond. This is one of the finest family dogs in the world: cheerful, demonstrative, trustworthy with everyone, and forgiving of any mistakes made by inexperienced owners. Give this breed two brisk walks each day, play fetch games, and take him out for a good run once a week, and he is adaptable to almost any lifestyle. Friendly with everyone strangers, children, dogs, cats, smaller pets , his bark is welcoming rather than protective. You must control his tendency to chew on objects and to mouth your hands -- provide a box filled with toys so he can carry things around in his mouth. A Golden Retriever remains enthusiastically puppy-like for many years, so early obedience training is required to instill calmness and good manners. Eager to please and wonderfully responsive, he is nonetheless distracted by exciting sights and sounds, so you must be both patient and persistent. The mind and heart of a Golden is sweet and gentle, but his body is robust — until he's taught not to pull on the leash, you'll need good biceps to walk him. Our beautiful girl was born last April and we collected her in June. We named her Sienna and she is just the most adorable and loving girl. She loves going for long walks and running round the fields surrounding our home, although she does manage to seek out every muddy puddle to roll around in. She loves nothing more than playing hide and seek with her many toys and is so clever, she always finds them. My favourite time is in the evening, when she becomes sleepy and snuggles on the sofa with us, being totally pampered. We absolutely adore her and feel so blessed she is part of our family. Thanks again Jude.
It gives an estimate of the risk for painful osteoarthritis OA of canine hip dysplasia CHD later in life. With this information, preventive and palliative strategies can be recommended by the PennHIP-trained veterinarian. It has been extremely helpful to me as a breeder to OFA-certify my dogs. If the breeders have been breeding a long time you should see lots of names. You are supporting puppy mills if you buy a dog with these registries as they are mainly for puppy mill breeders, You know what you get with AKC because of record inspections and DNA. All Buyers should beware! Both are breeding females that are not German Shepherds they looked like husky crosses but are registering them as German Shepherds and the registry does not care. I have personally seen it and so have many others. Are you looking for size? Here are some pointers! Most breeders of large german shepherds exaggerate by 50 lbs and several inches or more! Vet certified weight means nothing if you can't call the vet! Size means little if temper , health and longevity are not there! I have a great love and passion for German Shepherds, due to their intelligence and loyalty. I have a large, close family that are helping me raise, train, show and breed the dogs I love. Tiltonhaus kennel is attached to our home so that our German Shepherds can live primarily in our home enjoying family life with us. Rotating the dogs this way gives each dog lots of quality time with us. We strive to give our dogs the environment and attention that best enhances their well being and health. We live on 10 acres of land where our dogs can run and explore, along with several secure yards and runs for outdoor activity. Tiltonhaus German Shepherd dogs enjoy family outings, such as hikes, bike rides, picnics, camping, vacations, etc. All of our German Shepherds are purebred, AKC Registered, and come from top West German champion bloodlines known for producing dogs that are not only beautiful, but have balanced temperaments and strong work ethics. Degenerative Myelopathy. Our breeding dogs have had their hips and elbows certified with either the German SV a-stamp program or through OFA, which gives us the confidence to have all of our Tiltonhaus puppies guaranteed for hips and health in writing. Our puppies are handled and socialized from birth. So we become very attached to these little pups and care about their well being. Potential buyers should be prepared to answer questions about why they want to purchase a puppy and their plans for their puppy. We recommend that your new puppy get basic obedience training to be a happy, well-adjusted dog. Tiltonhaus is family owned and operated, fully licensed business located in Deer Park, Washington 15 minutes north of Spokane, WA. My name is Mitzi Michelle Brooks. I have had dogs all my life and German Shepherds most of that time. I have tried different breeds, but always come back to what I know and love. The German Shepherd Dog is the right fit for me. I breed large, old-fashioned, straight-backed, German Shepherds with a special focus on health and temperament. I am a very small breeder, all my dogs live with me, in the house. They are first, and foremost, my beloved pets. In my litters, I concentrate on the things that matter most to me: Health and Temperament. My dogs are all larger than the breed standard but with no compromise to their health. All my dogs are medium to low energy, making them easy to train and ideally suited for families. I do not breed: dogs that are hyper, dogs that show any signs of aggression, working dogs, high drive dogs, or dogs with excessive angulation. Puppies are born and raised in my home! That means your puppy goes home with you already socialized with other dogs, with cats, and familiar with all the sights and sounds of a normal home. All puppies are also current on vaccinations and on a set deworming schedule. The puppies bred here are sold as companions and pets. Just as working dogs are bred to work, my puppies are bred to live in and be a part of a family. With their low to low-medium drive, my pups are very easy for their new parents to train and still possess that famous German Shepherd instinct to protect their home and their family. These soft temperaments mean that my dogs are happy to go out and play, but just as happy to come in, lay at your feet, and interact with their family. Please check out our Litters page to know about our current and future breeding plans. This allows us to offer puppies to pet homes at a more affordable price. You will still get AKC papers except they will say limited. If you bred a dog that was registered limited, then you would not be able to register the offspring. This limit however, can be lifted by the breeder. That said, while it can be done, I strongly urge anyone who lives in an apartment to think carefully about how much time and work it can be to keep a large, working dog in an apartment. I will not sell a puppy to anyone who lives in an apartment and leaves the dog home alone all day. At least one person needs to be home during the day. The dog needs to be taken outside to play at least once a day and taken for potty breaks many times EVERY day. Also, please check with your apartments rules on German Shepherds; some complexes do not allow them. New strains of the Parvo Virus are abundant and it is my job to keep puppies safe. I use a high titer Parvo Vaccine at 4 weeks but this may not protect all puppies. So please understand as much as you would like to visit with your puppies as they grow I can no longer allow this until they are 7 weeks. I will send out emails with pictures or videos weekly. No outside dogs are allowed at anytime. Thank you for understanding how important it is for me to keep the puppies safe. If you do visit other breeders, please do so on a different day that you visit. Von Ward Kennels will take back any puppy at any time in their lives if their owners can no longer care for them. Please never take a Von Wards dog to a shelter if you can no longer keep them. While most of our dogs are larger than the standard, we do have a couple of breeding females that are within standard.
See our Privacy Notice A dog owner has shared his amusement after accidentally achieving what took a pair of breeders 15 years to do - a rare colour combination of labrador puppies. It's said that a litter of labradors would very rarely consist of all three colours - yellow, chocolate and black - due to the breed's DNA. But Simon Zeslawski, of Newquay, was taken aback by news that one of the litters was born last week in West Sussex - because he achieved the same by accident with his son's pet dog, Coco, this summer before realising how uncommon it was. Read more: The cafe owners giving remote St Just a new lease of life Last week black Labrador Zola, four, delivered 10 pups that are a mixture of three different colours - only seen on a "handful" of occasions before - according to the West Sussex breeders. Owners Tina Davis, 62, and her husband Martin Davis, 63, began breeding with a female chocolate Lab in - and have been trying to achieve the DNA mix since so its been 15 years in the making. Over the years they bred a mixture of yellow, chocolate and black labs and decided to strategically mix doggy DNA to produce a litter of all three. Tina said she had her fingers crossed that this would be the litter that she'd been waiting for all these years — and the wish was granted. They had no idea that both carried this genetic combination, or that it was even possible. Get the best stories about the things you love most curated by us and delivered to your inbox every day. Pugs are purebred dogs that were originally lap dogs. This is a highly sensitive breed that does not adapt well to being alone for long periods. However, they are adaptable to apartment living given their compact size inches and pounds. Pugs are a good choice for novice pet owners as they are loving and easygoing. They are affectionate with family members, kid-friendly, and get along well with other dogs in the household. In terms of grooming, Pugs shed a lot but they are quite easy to groom. Pugs are not the most intelligent canines but they can be trained to comply with requests using reward games. If you are an individual or family interested in Pug puppies in Tennessee, you should know this breed has moderate exercise needs and energy levels. But Pugs are an extremely playful breed, which makes them the ideal pets for Tennessee families with kids. The protein will come from readily available sources such as chicken or beef, and not exotic or boutique sources like kangaroo or venison as you saw in second study mentioned above. According to the AKC , quality, regulated animal byproducts can be good for your dog. These byproducts can include organ meats or entrails, which often contain more nutrients than, say, plain chicken breast. Another misconception is that dogs should eat grain-free diets. As you saw in the second study mentioned above, that can actually be very harmful for your dog and cause DCM. But food labels can be a little vague and confusing, so below is an explanation of what some of these terms mean, according to the Merck Veterinary Manual and the AKC. There is one caveat though. For instance, flaked corn, ground corn, and kibbled corn could be sprinkled in an ingredient list and not be listed as the first few ingredients, but in reality, if you were to add them all up they are all corn, after all , you might find that this food is made mostly of corn. The same goes for chicken, chicken meal, and chicken byproduct. Meat vs. Meat Meal vs. The quality of these ingredients can vary widely, so be sure to talk to your vet about this and choose a reputable brand of food. Below are a few examples: Obesity. Golden Retrievers love food and they do have a tendency to become overweight if you let them. This problem can often affect these next two problems… Joint issues. Golden Retrievers are prone to joint issues and growing too fast because they eat too much can often make this problem worse more on this in the next section. Heart issues. Skin issues. Golden Retrievers are prone to hot spots and excess protein in their diets can be a factor that causes them. Many goldens suffer from food allergies. One cup of Brand X food may have calories per cup, while Brand Y has calories per cup. During a vet visit our veterinarian said he looked too small and lethargic for a puppy his age about 8 weeks at the time , and he recommended we feed him a little more. As far as how often to feed your puppy, this same rule applies. For us, we fed Oliver three times per day until he was a little over a year old. Getting a Golden Retriever Puppy? Get the gameplan for raising them right with the Golden Retriever Puppy Handbook. Those two statements may sound random, but they are related. According to the Banfield Pet Hospital , overfeeding your Golden Retriever can cause them to grow too fast and increase their risk of hip dysplasia. You probably noticed that a raw diet was the fourth-most popular diet Golden Retriever owners feed their dog. Since puppies are growing and adults are just maintaining their weight, they have different dietary needs. And for fats, puppy food should have at least 8. As far as when to switch from puppy food to adult food, talk to your veterinarian. To see a list of other milestones your puppy will hit like when they lose their first teeth, or when their coat is fully grown check out this timeline of Golden Retriever puppy milestones. Like most of the other questions in this post, this is something to talk to your veterinarian about. Many foods will have the same vitamins that pills have already in them, but on the other hand, some breeders require that you give your puppy vitamins for their health guarantee to be valid. First, we unknowingly started him off on one of the brands listed in the graph above that is correlated with DCM. Then we switched to another brand that he just sort of liked. If we were to have another puppy, we would definitely start with the Royal Canin Golden Retriever Puppy food. How To Switch Food Brands The other day I was talking to someone who was complaining that her puppy was having lots of stomach issues. Dogs have sensitive stomachs so if you want to switch foods, you need to do it slowly. You should take about a week to transition from the old food to the new brand. Also consider how long the brand of food has been around, whether or not there have been any recalls of that brand, and if there is any research behind it. What do you feed your Golden Retriever puppy? Have any questions about what to feed them? Let me know in the comments below! Related articles:. Read the full disclosure here. Being a large and energetic dog, your golden retriever has a ravenous appetite and can eat a lot. However, overfeeding is never good and could be avoided with the help of a golden retriever feeding chart. Knowing how much to feed your golden retriever is always tricky but essential for their well-being and health. Goldens are prone to obesity and joint problems, which can only be exacerbated with an inadequate feeding plan. So, stay with me to find the right feeding plan and meal schedule for your goldie. Most first-time owners think their puppies should be chubby. In truth, golden retriever puppies are supposed to look lanky and act like they are always hungry when fed the correct amount of food. To encourage proper growth and development without making your pup obese, you will have to know how much to feed a golden retriever puppy. For example, cheaper foods use fillers and have a smaller amount of calories, thus you will have to feed more than you would when using premium large breed puppy foods. They are growing quickly, so while they eat smaller quantities of food than adult dogs, they need to extract far more nutrients like protein, minerals, and vitamins, to sustain their growth and development. Different Dogs, Different Diets Nutritional needs vary from breed to breed. One only needs to look at golden retrievers to know they require a different diet than a Chihuahua! For example, joint and bone problems are much more common in big dogs than in little ones, but choosing the right puppy food can reduce the risk. Large-breed puppy food has reduced amounts of calcium and phosphorus, which helps control the rate of skeletal growth. Also, you may find puppy foods that contain glucosamine and chondroitin to support joint health and mobility. By consuming too much food, your puppy will have elevated levels of the very nutrients that should be limited. Additionally, overweight puppies may develop other health issues such as diabetes and heart disease. Good eating habits developed during puppyhood will lead to a healthy mature dog in the years to come. Nutrition For The Outside One of the most visible components of your dog is its fur. Nutrition plays a vital role in this area. A large percentage of the protein your puppy takes in goes towards maintaining its coat. Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids are also essential for healthy skin and fur. Which Food Do I Choose? There will always be those who buy the cheapest brand on the market. Some will opt for the most expensive, while others will simply go with a brand name they recognize. The key is to find the right food for your particular puppy. One thing you cannot afford to ignore is the nutritional content. Because they are still growing, puppies need more protein than adults. Proteins foster muscle growth and development in puppies and lean muscle maintenance in adults, so the more of it there is in a diet, the better it is for your growing retriever. Fats, too, are important for golden puppies because they provide the energy required for everyday activities. You should be careful, however, not to feed your golden excess calories because this will result in excess weight or obesity. Eventually, your dog will end up battling joint problems. For instance, less expensive dog foods typically have lower-quality ingredients. The contents are often inexpensive, low-grade animal protein sources, like by-products and fillers. Fillers are frequently things like cornmeal, rice flour, or seed hulls. In general, thoroughly review the nutritional content of your chosen diet. Are the ingredients wholesome and natural? Does the diet have controlled calcium and phosphorous levels? Is the calorie and fat content limited to manage growth? Does the label state that the diet is complete and balanced? This can lead to obesity and will certainly cause increased defecation. The latter of these two issues will make house training more difficult than it already is. By contrast, costlier dog foods usually have higher-quality ingredients. The scales will be tipped heavily in favor of high-grade animal protein sources and fillers will be few and far between. Price is not, however, a guarantee of quality. The best dog foods for a golden retriever puppy are made with high-quality natural ingredients and have high levels of protein. Make sure the food is complete and balanced for daily feeding and formulated to meet the nutritional needs of large breed puppies. At this point, golden retriever puppies have likely already been switched to dry puppy food and you should continue feeding your pup the same type of food the breeder used. From the day you bring them home until they are six months old, you should feed your golden retriever puppy three times a day. Ideally, your pup should have breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day. A grain-free diet is the default meal for golden retrievers that are sensitive to grains, but if your dog is healthy, feeding her such a meal boils down to choice. A lot has been said about grain-free diets. Reports and studies have been carried out in recent years trying to establish any connection between it and Canine Dilated Cardiomyopathy DCM. That all starts with choosing the best puppy food for golden retrievers. Avoid low-cost foods that are more filler than substance, and look for better foods that are packed with nutrients to help your puppy grow. In particular, consider trying a large breed formula to meet the specific needs of your golden retriever puppy. Good nutrition is an essential part of any health regimen, and providing high-quality puppy food will lay the foundation for a long, and enjoyable life. You May Also Like. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. We all want our golden retriever puppies to be healthy and happy. We envision them running through a verdant field chasing a ball. Full of energy with the beautiful, lustrous golden coat. But, just like us, eating the proper food in the proper amounts will help your golden properly grow and thrive. After all, what we eat impacts how healthy we are. How much you should feed your golden retriever puppy will vary depending on the quality of food you feed, his age, his weight, his general health, and his activity level. Your golden will be growing for up to two years. And the amount of food during that time will have to be adjusted depending on his needs. Because most people feed kibble to their pup, this article will focus on that. Kibble is convenient and cost effective. Instead, they should be lanky and full of energy. They should love to eat their food with gusto. Instead, you should be able to feel his ribs when you pet him there. There should just be a thin coating of fat under his skin. And he should have a defined waistline. Of course you should check with your veterinarian to make such adjustments. And remember a young puppy should get only so much exercise a day. Their joints and bones are developing and can be damaged if the exercise is too extreme. Assuming you have an eight-week-old puppy, he should receive three to four meals a day. From eight weeks old until about five or six months old, three meals per day are advisable. Of course, feed at the same intervals every day and split the total amount per day in half to be given at each feeding. After about six months of age through adulthood, two feedings per day are the norm. Always check with your vet regarding how much and how often to feed. These are just guidelines. Feed him at the same distraction-free location so that he focuses on eating. As much as goldens love to eat, a young golden puppy is also very easily distracted. This can lead to possible health problems, including joint and bone problems. Goldens can easily become overweight. Free feeding can also lead to a picky eater. Some puppies figure out that if their buffets are always there, and they can just go graze at will. Most foods you purchase will have guidelines on their bag or box. When you first get your puppy, feed him the same food that the breeder or rescue fed him for a few weeks. Then, if you want to change his food, do so over at least 10 days. Add more of the new food and subtract more of the old food each day. After about five days, you should be giving him approximately 50 percent of the new food and 50 percent of the old food. Switching food over such a period of time will help prevent stomach upsets and diarrhea. Overfeeding will result not only in him becoming overweight but it will also make him grow too fast. Periodically—even weekly— test whether you can still feel his ribs without them protruding. You can then increase the amount he eats. You should also feed his last meal of the day at least 90 minutes before his bed time so that he can digest his food and potty before bed. A well-balanced, high-quality food should provide all the nutrients he requires. Golden puppies require a formula made for large-breed dogs. Puppy formulas for large-breed dogs regulate their growth. Eating too quickly can lead to digestive upsets and even bloat, which can be deadly. I rescued my golden retriever Riley when he was about six months old. To say that he ate as if it were his last meal would be an understatement. He had a voracious appetite. I bought one of the maze bowls to slow him down. The kibble is placed between each section of the bowl, and he had to forage for his food. It worked! He ate at a more normal pace. Of course, dogs should be given free access to fresh water. Other Feeding Options Although I concentrated in this article on feeding kibble to your new puppy, there are other options. There are some drawbacks to them because they may not be nutritionally complete, may be cost prohibitive, or may be too time-consuming to make. Wet Food Canned food alone or mixed with kibble is an option. But wet food alone is very expensive. He may become a picky eater. Feeding raw is controversial. Dehydrated raw foods reduce some of the risks. The ratio of calcium to phosphorous is crucial to puppy development. Homemade Diet Cooking for your best friend can be very appealing. And many people do. You know what ingredients and their quality are. But it has its drawbacks. Of course, the amount you feed is important for his growth rate and general health and well-being. But there is no one-size-fits-all in determining how much to feed a golden retriever puppy. Any amounts you see are just guidelines. Adjust them as necessary regarding your own special puppy. If you are bringing a Goldie into your family, you might also be aware of their reputation as food lovers. Your Goldie might want to eat anything and everything you put in their bowl — and maybe even anything left on an unattended plate. In this Golden Retriever feeding guide, Hypro Premium will take you through everything you need to know when it comes to food options for your pup. The best food for most young puppies is milk. If you are weaning a puppy, you can start to mix in a little dry kibble with their puppy milk to create a paste. You can feed this mix to your puppy up to four times a day, slowly reducing the amount of milk you mix in. Over time, your Goldie puppy will get more comfortable with solid foods, until you no longer need to include any milk in their diet. While chubby little puppies are cute, your Goldie should not build up too much excess fat once you start feeding them solids. Goldies go from a small 4kg puppy at 7 weeks old to an almost 30 kg adult dog in the space of only 10 months. At six months old your puppy will still be growing, but more slowly as they reach most of their body development milestones. This is why appropriate feeding in the first year of their life is vital to the overall health of your Goldie for years to come. Over time this can increase to up to 4 cups a day at 10 months old, though females should usually only need 3 cups a day. The amount you feed your puppy is often dependent on their size and sex. While they may have some growing left to do, it depends on your dog. Some Goldies will continue to experience growth spurts before their second birthday, while others will stay the same size. Large breeds can be at risk of growing too fast, which can make them more vulnerable to skeletal and weight problems when they get older. Golden retrievers are especially prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, which can be avoided through diet control. You should feed your Goldie between 3 — 4 cups of food per day over two meals. Adult dogs and puppies have different nutritional needs. This is important to take into consideration as you are establishing a feeding schedule for a Golden Retriever puppy. Puppies require more calories to support their rapid growth than adult dogs, but they also have much smaller stomachs, which means they get fuller faster. Because of this, puppies can easily overeat, especially Golden Retrievers. You can help your puppy avoid overeating by allowing them a short amount of time to eat, and then removing their bowl. All puppies grow a lot during their first year, but large breed puppies are more likely to suffer from negative health consequences as a result. In order to provide your Golden Retriever puppy with the most appropriate food to support their rapid growth, consider choosing a large breed puppy food. Goldie puppies need lots of protein, fibre, and fatty acids to support the development of their bodies and provide them with energy. These foods also take into account the difference in nutrient digestion between small and large breeds. Too much of these nutrients can cause your large breed puppy to develop skeletal abnormalities. So how much do you feed a Golden Retriever? Your adult Goldie could need anywhere between and 1, calories per day. The amount of food you feed your dog will be determined by a few important factors. The first thing to consider is the sex of your dog. On average, your male Golden Retriever will need slightly more food than a female dog. Senior dogs will usually be less active and so will need less food. Goldies in particular can have a lot of variation in the amount of food they need on a daily basis. No matter how much you feed your dog, it is ideal that you feed your adult Golden Retriever two meals a day at evenly spaced time intervals. Feeding your dog twice, once in the morning and again in the evening, can be useful for establishing a routine and avoiding overfeeding. This routine can also include exercise, and is useful for encouraging healthy behaviour around food and toilet training. Special Considerations Your Golden Retriever could be predisposed to several health conditions that are important to consider when you make decisions about their diet. Firstly, Golden Retrievers are known for their beautiful coats, but their skin can often become infected. Goldies love swimming, but this can cause problems if water irritates their skin. They can also be susceptible to atopic dermatitis, which causes extreme itchiness, resulting in licking and biting behaviours in dogs that can cause even more damage. For dogs prone to skin and coat issues, a fish-based diet can help alleviate symptoms. Fish contains plenty of fatty acids, which support coat and skin health, and rarely triggers any allergic reaction in dogs. Goldies often benefit from healthy grains in their diet, especially as avoiding them can actually leave your dog more vulnerable to nutritional dilated cardiomyopathy, or nutritional DCM. This heart disease is common in Golden Retrievers, and can be triggered by consuming too much grain-free pet food that contains legumes like lentils and peas. You should consider feeding your Golden Retriever foods that are full of grains and proteins like chicken or fish. These are the benefits and drawbacks of the three most popular options — wet food, a raw food diet, and dry food. Wet food can be a great option for dogs that need plenty of protein and fat, like working dogs or dogs with certain health conditions. It also hydrates your dog while they eat, which can be useful for dogs suffering from any illness. For dogs with highly restrictive diets, raw food prepared by you can be a great way to avoid allergens. You can have complete control over a raw diet, which does require a lot more work on your part, but can have great results. For instance, a Golden Retriever with heart issues should eat a low salt diet, which can be easier to achieve if you are preparing their meals from scratch. However, low quality kibbles tend to be made up of a lot of low quality fillers, which can be hard for your pup to digest. Whatever option you choose for your Goldie, make sure it is suitable for large breeds and contains high quality ingredients. This will help prevent degenerative health disorders in the long run. Your Golden Retriever will probably love food, and will probably try to eat anything you put in front of them, which means you need to help them avoid the negative consequences of overeating. Golden retrievers, like other large and active breeds, need plenty of exercise. Not only is this vital to their physical health, but it also ensures they grow up well socialised and mentally stimulated. As your Goldie grows from a puppy to an adult dog, the amount of meals they need a day will reduce as their digestive systems become more developed. Your dog will need two meals a day, once in the evening and once in the morning, from the age of 6 months.

The Poodle Chihuahua mix is a great companion dog and loves to be part of a family environment. Does the Chipoo Require Exercise? Yes, the Poochi thrives on physical activity, but a lot of exercises is NOT required. Just be careful not to let the little guy overexert himself. Also, provide him with plenty of water to keep him hydrated. Potty Training the Choodle Small dogs have smaller bladders. House training them can be a challenge. The number one rule is to start early! Brushing at least one to three times a week will remove dander and loose hair. It also keeps the coat smooth and tangle-free. This breed can also inherit overactive tear glands, which may cause tears to dry under its eyes and turns the fur a dark color. So use a wet cloth or a very fine and blunt comb, as needed, to keep this issue under control. Dental health is also important, so brush their teeth times a week. Keep a close eye on the nails. Training and Socialization Tips Intelligent dogs like the Chipoo are usually easy to train. Keep things positive and offer lots of praise. For their safety, be sure to leash train them and socialize them early! A properly trained Poochi can go anywhere with its family. Once they develop their strong personality and independence, they can become stubborn. Handle this right away in a firm way and with patience. Your Chi-poo will likely alert you of intruders by barking. Low blood sugar, also known as hypoglycemia, can occur in this breed. To prevent this, feed several small meals throughout the day. Chihuahuas have soft teeth, which can lead to dental diseases. Keep an eye out for: Cardiovascular disease. Different breed organizations have recognized it by various names. A significant trait that the Chi-Poo may have partially inherited from the Chihuahua is their habit of bonding intimately with a particular person of the house, following him wherever he goes. These amicable dogs are not a good option for children below ten years of age as the latter may harm or rashly handle them. They can thrive well indoors or even in apartments if they have sufficient space to run around freely. This Chihuahua-Poodle mix gets along well with other dogs and pets when brought up with then since their puppy days. They are however not too comfortable with strangers. Care Exercise These active, playful dogs require a lot of physical activities to be healthy and happy. Taking them out for a walk daily under moderate temperature is a good option. In fact when outdoors if the temperature falls below 50 degrees, it is safe to take a coat or sweater for them. They get bored and destructive when left alone for too long. Therefore, give them adequate mental exercise by introducing a lot of interesting toys to them. Grooming Though they shed less, their coats should be groomed at frequent intervals in a week on the basis of the length by using a brush with soft bristles. Bathe them once or twice when needed. It is best to brush your dog before bathing it as this will help in removing loose hairs, also preventing it from getting matted after being wet. In fact, if your pet Chi-Poo has a coat similar to Poodle then brushing at regular intervals as well as clipping is essential. Make sure to brush their teeth two to three times in a week to prevent any dental infections. Because of their overactive tear glands similar to Poodles, it is required to remove the dried tears by cleaning the region around their eyes using a fine tooth comb devoid of any sharp edges. Health Problems They may suffer from diseases like luxating patella, tracheal collapse, hydrocephalus building up of fluid in the cavities of the brain , dilated cardiomyopathy, glaucoma, and chronic valvular heart disease. They also have the problem of dry skin, being incapable of absorbing anything through their skin. Some of them may possess an inverted eyelid that may heal on its own or in the extreme case require surgery. This breed is also prone to hypoglycemia that can turn fatal if not treated properly. Training Being intelligent just like the Poodle they will respond well to training when handled by a tactful trainer who will not be harsh on them but handle their stubbornness in a firm and patient way. Loving to amuse their owners with impressive tricks, they will be adept at it when groomed with an efficient hand. The techniques of rewarding and praising will encourage them to respond in a positive way. Proper socialization training is also required to be given to the puppies to help them get over certain behavioral problems like barking, showing possessiveness regarding their toys or belongings or getting destructive. Moreover, they should be trained to get over their habit of being attached to a particular individual of the family as his absence may trigger intense separation anxiety in them. They are to be leash trained for their safety. Feeding They should be given the diet of small or toy dogs probably wet food as most of them may face difficulties in digesting the contents of the commonly used dog foods. This breed may be picky while eating, thus it can take time to feed them. Give your pet about three fourth to one and a half cup dry dog food. Feeding your chipoo healthy food many times in a day will reduce the risk of hyperglycemia. However, we do know that they were first bred in the United States in the s. The AKC only recognizes purebred dogs, therefore the Chi-Poo cannot be registered with the organization. While this may seem like a minor distinction, it does prevent the Chihuahua Poodle Mix from competing in AKC-sanctioned events. For those looking to purchase a dog that can compete in agility or obedience trials, the Poodle Chihuahua mix may not be the best choice. Poodle Chihuahua Mix Appearance Poodle Chihuahua mixes typically have a medium-sized build, with a long, slender snout and large ears. They come in a variety of colors, including black, brown, white, and cream. They usually have a curly or wavy coat, which may require regular grooming. As a designer breed, the exact height and weight of the Poodle Chihuahua mix can vary depending on which parent breed they take after more. Chi-Poo Temperament Chihuahuas and Poodles have very different temperaments, so the temperament of a Chihuahua Poodle Mix can vary depending on which traits he inherits from his parents. However, both the Chihuahua and the Poodle are intelligent, loyal, and loving dogs, so it is likely that the Chihuahua Poodle Mix will inherit these qualities. It's important to introduce them to different types of animals early on so that they can learn to get along. With that said, some Chi-Poos may be more comfortable around other dogs than other types of animals. They may also become territorial and try to assert themselves as the alpha dog in the home. Proper socialization and training can help to reduce these tendencies. Chi-Poo Highlights Chi-Poos are mixed-breed dogs. They are not purebreds like their Chihuahua or Poodle parents. They handle heat better than cold, but you may need to apply doggy sunscreen in summer. Because the Chi-Poo is a small dog, they can be easily injured by overly excited children. Chi-Poos prefer to be mostly around adults or older kids who know how to play gently. Chi-Poo History The Chi-Poo dog breed may have existed naturally over the years, but designer breeders started intentionally mixing Chihuahuas and Poodles in the US in the s—right around they same time they started developing Cockapoos. Mixing breeds can often minimize health issues, as well. They continued to create Chi-Poos as demand for the mixed breed pups climbed. Even though the Chi-Poo breed got its start as a designer breed, some have ended up in shelters or in the care of rescue groups. Consider adoption if you decide this is the breed for you. Check your local shelters, look up Chi-Poo rescues, or check with breed-specific Poodle or Chihuahua rescues, as they sometimes try to re-home mixes. Chi-Poo Size As the Chi-Poo is a relatively new breed, there are few standards when it comes to size. That said, as a mix between Chihuahua and Toy Poodle parents, you can expect Chi-Poos to be on the small side. Most weigh in at five to 20 pounds and range in height from five to 15 inches at the shoulder. That said, many can be smaller or larger. While both parent dogs, the Poodle and Chihuahua do not like being left alone, the Chi-poo is an anomaly. Most of them do just fine with working parents who have to leave the house for long periods. If there is any family weekend activity, he will be willing to join in for the fun. Get him plenty of toys to play with as well. Chi-poo can grow possessive of his toys and even hide them if there is another dog around. Remember, exercising is good for his health and temperament. Generic dog food is not good for him. Chi-poo needs a diet that comprises of high-quality dry food. Generic dog food is not good for his digestive system nor is human food which will ruin his teeth. Feed him dry kibble specifically designed for pedigree dogs like him. Unlike most hybrid dogs , Chi-poo has to be constantly fed but in small portions. This will help maintain his sugar levels and prevent any spikes or sudden drop of the same. He loves a bubble bath. Chipoo takes his grooming time seriously and you should too. This means brushing his coat daily to get rid of pet dander and smooth out tangles. He loves a bubble bath too with premium dog shampoo that helps clean his skin and protect it from infections. Brush his teeth daily and clean his ears once or twice a week. Chipoodle may also need his fur coat trimmed to reduce the gathering of dirt which may cause a bad odor. Health problems of Choodle. Be kind to him always and he will be loyal for life. Poodle x Corgi — Corgipoo Poodle x Yorkshire Terrier — Yorkipoo The Chihuahua Poodle mix is not as popular as some of the other Doodle-dogs, but it will still make a fun-loving family pet. What are the main characteristics of the Chipoo? Crossbreed dogs, like The Chi-poo or Wapoo are no more likely to inherit health problems than purebred dogs; in fact, it is believed they may actually be stronger as they are adding more variety into the gene pool. It can be heavily weighted towards the characteristics of one parent. The characteristics of the Chipoo are a combination of nature and nurture: genetics of each parent, the environment, and the quality, type, and amount of training and socialization. The Chipoo dog coat: A short-haired Chihuahua is the usual dog in the Chipoo mix, with its moderate shedding, smooth, straight-haired coat, while the Poodle has a wiry and stiff, wavy coat that sheds less. Poodle—mix dogs, such as the Chipoo were initially crossbred, in the United States, to be hypoallergenic and be suitable for people with dog hair allergies; it had mixed results. Loyalty and companionship The Chihuahua Poodle mix breed will become very attached to its family and especially the master. Reputation: The Chihuahua and the Poodle are both intelligent and sociable dogs that are not known to be aggressive. However, they are known to bark at strangers and other dogs they see as a threat to them or their families. Their size and non-aggressive temperament make them an ideal house pet for any experience of a dog owner, in any type of living accommodation. The Poodle mix is quieter and more reserved than the Chihuahua parent, but both are known to bark when startled or challenged. The Chipoo will be playful and full of energy so be prepared, if you get one, it will expect you to play with it and to have sufficient exercise. Popularity: This Chihuahua and Poodle mix, the Chipoodle, is not the most popular of the designer poodle mix dogs; yet their parents rank as No 6 the Poodle and the No 35 the Chihuahua , in the AKC list of most popular dogs. Perhaps this mix is not as well-known as the other Doodle-dogs and in time could rise in popularity as its parent breeds have. Trainability: When both parent breeds are intelligent and easy to train the Chihuahua Poodle mix should be too. A Chipoo puppy may be tiny but it will be full of energy and high spirits. It will get excited and just want to play and run around, so it should be obedience trained and socialized early. The size of this small dog makes it delicate and vulnerable in play and handling, especially with young children. Therefore, it needs to learn control and understand voice commands, and know when to avoid a situation that might endanger its safety; especially when outdoors in public places or dog parks while playing with other dogs, or boisterous children. This Poochi is very active and needs to be kept occupied to stop boredom and from getting up to mischief; chewing, barking or destroying things. Positive reinforcement and small treats work best for this little pooch, as it likes to please and be praised. It will enjoy and need working challenges incorporating mental and physical stimulation. Socialization: A Chipoo puppy needs exposure to different situations and people early, and practice leaving it alone to help it manage its feelings of separation anxiety, but with you close by. This puppy does not like being left alone for long periods of time and will yap, and may annoy the neighbors! Early socialization and discipline are needed for any active mixed breed dog that likes to be protective of its loved ones. Despite its small size it will be fiercely protective and bark and try to guard its family in the company of other dogs or strangers. Purpose: It will just want to play and hang out with you. It does not have a prey or hunting instinct but it will get bored easily and want to be kept stimulated. In return, it will offer you its love, devotion, and companionship. Behavior: A Chipoo is smart and energetic despite its small size. Obedience training needs to begin early in the puppy years. It will need early leash training as it needs to learn to control its excitement outdoors. It will be naughty if it feels it is not getting enough attention. Physical Characteristics of the Chi-poo This small pooch is friendly, full of energy, and is very sociable. For Females up to lb 1. Temperament: A Chipoo is not known to be aggressive, but it can be mouthy with other dogs and strangers. How should you train a Chi Poo? A Chipoo is intelligent and active and needs to be trained early. You will need patience as the Chipoo can be quite a handful and at times stubborn or moody. Positive reinforcement and reward-based training work best, but never aggressive treatment. Types of training required: obedience, discipline, agility, and socialization. So, if you are not going to use a professional dog trainer: 1 Develop your basic command words: Find keywords such as Stop, Sit, Down, etc. You will have to lock the cage in the early days so it knows it can sleep there and be transported in it. There are products available to help, such as mats and odor sprays to attract puppy go to the same spot each time 4 Walking on a leash — this Poochi is playful and full of energy so early leash training is recommended. Also, practice voice commands and road safety awareness firmly but not harshly. Health problems and health issues Although mixing breeds can often minimize health issues, the Chihuahua Poodle mix could still suffer from certain hereditary health problems from both parent breeds, such as: Luxating Patella — dislocated kneecap — A congenital condition that affects the kneecaps often causes dislocation or loosening of the kneecaps and extreme pain and affected mobility. Progressive Retinal Atrophy PRA — this is a genetic condition where the retina in the eye degenerates and it can lead to vision loss if not diagnosed and treated early. Other eye problems include: Glaucoma, Cataracts, Dry Cornea or Overactive tear glands — watering eyes from blocked or narrow tear ducts; as a result of swelling, or inflammation and the tears are unable to drain away and will build up in the tear sac. Its eyes need to be wiped often. Other health issues include Cardiovascular Heart problems , Dental problems due to their very small jaws , Obesity as they like to eat a lot , and Allergies — dry ears and dry skin conditions and low blood sugar levels.

The German Shepherd is one of the most versatile, well-recognized, and popular dog breeds in the world. The modern German Shepherd is descended from a family of various German herding dogs. Breed standards were not developed until the late 19th century when Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, worked with Arthur Meyer and other breeders to develop the ideal German herding dog. Stephanitz and Meyer wrote the breed standard in and the American Kennel Club recognized the German Shepherd as a member of the Herding Group in .Although they were originally bred as herding dogs, they were also bred for versatility, which made the German Shepherd an all-around working dog that could excel in a variety of applications. German Shepherds are one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units in both police and military applications. They also make great service dogs and, of course, are still awesome herding dogs and farm dogs! The German Shepherd is a strong-willed and highly intelligent dog. They have a playful, energetic spirit and tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets, which makes them a great family companion. A born protector, the German Shepherd will provide a great sense of security for their family while their loving and lively personality will make them fit right in as a companion. German Shepherds are naturally protective and can be wary of strangers at first. A well-socialized German Shepherd will bark to alert you and tends to warm up to strangers once introduced. German Shepherds are dogs that were bred to herd and work. This, plus their high energy, makes them a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt well to larger apartments as long as plenty of time is dedicated to ensuring they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention every day. A bored, ignored, or under-exercised German Shepherd can often become a destructive one. They also can be sensitive to their surroundings and large gatherings can be off-putting. With a longer coat, they tend to prefer cooler climates and are sensitive to heat. The German Shepherd is a generally healthy breed, but there are some potential health concerns and good breeding practices make a big difference. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a German Shepherd include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a barrel-chested breed, the German Shepherd is also at risk for bloat. While the German Shepherd is highly intelligent and highly trainable, they are generally not recommended for novice owners. If you are a novice dog owner, enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a professional dog trainer; not just for your dog, but for yourself as well. Training assistance will help you grow in experience and build a strong bond between you and your German Shepherd puppy, which is essential. Also, the GSD has a thirst for training and fulfillment. They get bored easily and especially with repetition, so continued training with your German Shepherd throughout their life will be necessary. German Shepherds have a medium-to-long double coat. They will shed year-round and heavier as seasons change. Brushing a few times a week is usually sufficient; brushing daily is even better and your GSD will likely love you for it. Bathing is occasional on an as-needed basis. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. German Shepherds are high-energy working dogs. Not only do they require a lot of daily activity, but they also are a herding breed that was made to run, guard, and observe, so they need a job to do to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for a GSD, but they will likely be up for more activity if you are. With their versatility and athleticism, you can try a lot of different activities when puppies finish growing and they are cleared for higher-impact things. A fully-grown German Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. German Shepherds generally live for years on average. Corporal Duncan brought him back to the United States and Rin-Tin-Tin became one of the most famous dog actors in history. Featured German Shepherd Article.
