The protein will come from readily available sources such as chicken or beef, and not exotic or boutique sources like kangaroo or venison as you saw in second study mentioned above. According to the AKC , quality, regulated animal byproducts can be good for your dog. These byproducts can include organ meats or entrails, which often contain more nutrients than, say, plain chicken breast. Another misconception is that dogs should eat grain-free diets. As you saw in the second study mentioned above, that can actually be very harmful for your dog and cause DCM. But food labels can be a little vague and confusing, so below is an explanation of what some of these terms mean, according to the Merck Veterinary Manual and the AKC. There is one caveat though. For instance, flaked corn, ground corn, and kibbled corn could be sprinkled in an ingredient list and not be listed as the first few ingredients, but in reality, if you were to add them all up they are all corn, after all , you might find that this food is made mostly of corn. The same goes for chicken, chicken meal, and chicken byproduct. Meat vs. Meat Meal vs. The quality of these ingredients can vary widely, so be sure to talk to your vet about this and choose a reputable brand of food. Below are a few examples: Obesity. Golden Retrievers love food and they do have a tendency to become overweight if you let them. This problem can often affect these next two problems… Joint issues. Golden Retrievers are prone to joint issues and growing too fast because they eat too much can often make this problem worse more on this in the next section. Heart issues. Skin issues. Golden Retrievers are prone to hot spots and excess protein in their diets can be a factor that causes them. Many goldens suffer from food allergies. One cup of Brand X food may have calories per cup, while Brand Y has calories per cup. During a vet visit our veterinarian said he looked too small and lethargic for a puppy his age about 8 weeks at the time , and he recommended we feed him a little more. As far as how often to feed your puppy, this same rule applies. For us, we fed Oliver three times per day until he was a little over a year old. Getting a Golden Retriever Puppy? Get the gameplan for raising them right with the Golden Retriever Puppy Handbook. Those two statements may sound random, but they are related. According to the Banfield Pet Hospital , overfeeding your Golden Retriever can cause them to grow too fast and increase their risk of hip dysplasia. You probably noticed that a raw diet was the fourth-most popular diet Golden Retriever owners feed their dog. Since puppies are growing and adults are just maintaining their weight, they have different dietary needs. And for fats, puppy food should have at least 8. As far as when to switch from puppy food to adult food, talk to your veterinarian. To see a list of other milestones your puppy will hit like when they lose their first teeth, or when their coat is fully grown check out this timeline of Golden Retriever puppy milestones. Like most of the other questions in this post, this is something to talk to your veterinarian about. Many foods will have the same vitamins that pills have already in them, but on the other hand, some breeders require that you give your puppy vitamins for their health guarantee to be valid. First, we unknowingly started him off on one of the brands listed in the graph above that is correlated with DCM. Then we switched to another brand that he just sort of liked. If we were to have another puppy, we would definitely start with the Royal Canin Golden Retriever Puppy food. How To Switch Food Brands The other day I was talking to someone who was complaining that her puppy was having lots of stomach issues. Dogs have sensitive stomachs so if you want to switch foods, you need to do it slowly. You should take about a week to transition from the old food to the new brand. Also consider how long the brand of food has been around, whether or not there have been any recalls of that brand, and if there is any research behind it. What do you feed your Golden Retriever puppy? Have any questions about what to feed them? Let me know in the comments below! Related articles:. Read the full disclosure here. Being a large and energetic dog, your golden retriever has a ravenous appetite and can eat a lot. However, overfeeding is never good and could be avoided with the help of a golden retriever feeding chart. Knowing how much to feed your golden retriever is always tricky but essential for their well-being and health. Goldens are prone to obesity and joint problems, which can only be exacerbated with an inadequate feeding plan. So, stay with me to find the right feeding plan and meal schedule for your goldie. Most first-time owners think their puppies should be chubby. In truth, golden retriever puppies are supposed to look lanky and act like they are always hungry when fed the correct amount of food. To encourage proper growth and development without making your pup obese, you will have to know how much to feed a golden retriever puppy. For example, cheaper foods use fillers and have a smaller amount of calories, thus you will have to feed more than you would when using premium large breed puppy foods. They are growing quickly, so while they eat smaller quantities of food than adult dogs, they need to extract far more nutrients like protein, minerals, and vitamins, to sustain their growth and development. Different Dogs, Different Diets Nutritional needs vary from breed to breed. One only needs to look at golden retrievers to know they require a different diet than a Chihuahua! For example, joint and bone problems are much more common in big dogs than in little ones, but choosing the right puppy food can reduce the risk. Large-breed puppy food has reduced amounts of calcium and phosphorus, which helps control the rate of skeletal growth. Also, you may find puppy foods that contain glucosamine and chondroitin to support joint health and mobility. By consuming too much food, your puppy will have elevated levels of the very nutrients that should be limited. Additionally, overweight puppies may develop other health issues such as diabetes and heart disease. Good eating habits developed during puppyhood will lead to a healthy mature dog in the years to come. Nutrition For The Outside One of the most visible components of your dog is its fur. Nutrition plays a vital role in this area. A large percentage of the protein your puppy takes in goes towards maintaining its coat. Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids are also essential for healthy skin and fur. Which Food Do I Choose? There will always be those who buy the cheapest brand on the market. Some will opt for the most expensive, while others will simply go with a brand name they recognize. The key is to find the right food for your particular puppy. One thing you cannot afford to ignore is the nutritional content. Because they are still growing, puppies need more protein than adults. Proteins foster muscle growth and development in puppies and lean muscle maintenance in adults, so the more of it there is in a diet, the better it is for your growing retriever. Fats, too, are important for golden puppies because they provide the energy required for everyday activities. You should be careful, however, not to feed your golden excess calories because this will result in excess weight or obesity. Eventually, your dog will end up battling joint problems. For instance, less expensive dog foods typically have lower-quality ingredients. The contents are often inexpensive, low-grade animal protein sources, like by-products and fillers. Fillers are frequently things like cornmeal, rice flour, or seed hulls. In general, thoroughly review the nutritional content of your chosen diet. Are the ingredients wholesome and natural? Does the diet have controlled calcium and phosphorous levels? Is the calorie and fat content limited to manage growth? Does the label state that the diet is complete and balanced? This can lead to obesity and will certainly cause increased defecation. The latter of these two issues will make house training more difficult than it already is. By contrast, costlier dog foods usually have higher-quality ingredients. The scales will be tipped heavily in favor of high-grade animal protein sources and fillers will be few and far between. Price is not, however, a guarantee of quality. The best dog foods for a golden retriever puppy are made with high-quality natural ingredients and have high levels of protein. Make sure the food is complete and balanced for daily feeding and formulated to meet the nutritional needs of large breed puppies. At this point, golden retriever puppies have likely already been switched to dry puppy food and you should continue feeding your pup the same type of food the breeder used. From the day you bring them home until they are six months old, you should feed your golden retriever puppy three times a day. Ideally, your pup should have breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day. A grain-free diet is the default meal for golden retrievers that are sensitive to grains, but if your dog is healthy, feeding her such a meal boils down to choice. A lot has been said about grain-free diets. Reports and studies have been carried out in recent years trying to establish any connection between it and Canine Dilated Cardiomyopathy DCM. That all starts with choosing the best puppy food for golden retrievers. Avoid low-cost foods that are more filler than substance, and look for better foods that are packed with nutrients to help your puppy grow. In particular, consider trying a large breed formula to meet the specific needs of your golden retriever puppy. Good nutrition is an essential part of any health regimen, and providing high-quality puppy food will lay the foundation for a long, and enjoyable life. You May Also Like. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. We all want our golden retriever puppies to be healthy and happy. We envision them running through a verdant field chasing a ball. Full of energy with the beautiful, lustrous golden coat. But, just like us, eating the proper food in the proper amounts will help your golden properly grow and thrive. After all, what we eat impacts how healthy we are. How much you should feed your golden retriever puppy will vary depending on the quality of food you feed, his age, his weight, his general health, and his activity level. Your golden will be growing for up to two years. And the amount of food during that time will have to be adjusted depending on his needs. Because most people feed kibble to their pup, this article will focus on that. Kibble is convenient and cost effective. Instead, they should be lanky and full of energy. They should love to eat their food with gusto. Instead, you should be able to feel his ribs when you pet him there. There should just be a thin coating of fat under his skin. And he should have a defined waistline. Of course you should check with your veterinarian to make such adjustments. And remember a young puppy should get only so much exercise a day. Their joints and bones are developing and can be damaged if the exercise is too extreme. Assuming you have an eight-week-old puppy, he should receive three to four meals a day. From eight weeks old until about five or six months old, three meals per day are advisable. Of course, feed at the same intervals every day and split the total amount per day in half to be given at each feeding. After about six months of age through adulthood, two feedings per day are the norm. Always check with your vet regarding how much and how often to feed. These are just guidelines. Feed him at the same distraction-free location so that he focuses on eating. As much as goldens love to eat, a young golden puppy is also very easily distracted. This can lead to possible health problems, including joint and bone problems. Goldens can easily become overweight. Free feeding can also lead to a picky eater. Some puppies figure out that if their buffets are always there, and they can just go graze at will. Most foods you purchase will have guidelines on their bag or box. When you first get your puppy, feed him the same food that the breeder or rescue fed him for a few weeks. Then, if you want to change his food, do so over at least 10 days. Add more of the new food and subtract more of the old food each day. After about five days, you should be giving him approximately 50 percent of the new food and 50 percent of the old food. Switching food over such a period of time will help prevent stomach upsets and diarrhea. Overfeeding will result not only in him becoming overweight but it will also make him grow too fast. Periodically—even weekly— test whether you can still feel his ribs without them protruding. You can then increase the amount he eats. You should also feed his last meal of the day at least 90 minutes before his bed time so that he can digest his food and potty before bed. A well-balanced, high-quality food should provide all the nutrients he requires. Golden puppies require a formula made for large-breed dogs. Puppy formulas for large-breed dogs regulate their growth. Eating too quickly can lead to digestive upsets and even bloat, which can be deadly. I rescued my golden retriever Riley when he was about six months old. To say that he ate as if it were his last meal would be an understatement. He had a voracious appetite. I bought one of the maze bowls to slow him down. The kibble is placed between each section of the bowl, and he had to forage for his food. It worked! He ate at a more normal pace. Of course, dogs should be given free access to fresh water. Other Feeding Options Although I concentrated in this article on feeding kibble to your new puppy, there are other options. There are some drawbacks to them because they may not be nutritionally complete, may be cost prohibitive, or may be too time-consuming to make. Wet Food Canned food alone or mixed with kibble is an option. But wet food alone is very expensive. He may become a picky eater. Feeding raw is controversial. Dehydrated raw foods reduce some of the risks. The ratio of calcium to phosphorous is crucial to puppy development. Homemade Diet Cooking for your best friend can be very appealing. And many people do. You know what ingredients and their quality are. But it has its drawbacks. Of course, the amount you feed is important for his growth rate and general health and well-being. But there is no one-size-fits-all in determining how much to feed a golden retriever puppy. Any amounts you see are just guidelines. Adjust them as necessary regarding your own special puppy. Do you have a golden retriever puppy? How did you determine what and how much to feed him? Please leave your comments in the section below. Helps ease anxiety in their new home. They are famously loving and playful family pets, always eager to jump in the pool or snuggle up with you on the lounge. They are patient and energetic dogs who are easy to train, making them excellent service animals as well as loyal companions. If you are bringing a Goldie into your family, you might also be aware of their reputation as food lovers. Your Goldie might want to eat anything and everything you put in their bowl — and maybe even anything left on an unattended plate. In this Golden Retriever feeding guide, Hypro Premium will take you through everything you need to know when it comes to food options for your pup. The best food for most young puppies is milk. If you are weaning a puppy, you can start to mix in a little dry kibble with their puppy milk to create a paste. You can feed this mix to your puppy up to four times a day, slowly reducing the amount of milk you mix in. Over time, your Goldie puppy will get more comfortable with solid foods, until you no longer need to include any milk in their diet. While chubby little puppies are cute, your Goldie should not build up too much excess fat once you start feeding them solids. Goldies go from a small 4kg puppy at 7 weeks old to an almost 30 kg adult dog in the space of only 10 months. At six months old your puppy will still be growing, but more slowly as they reach most of their body development milestones. This is why appropriate feeding in the first year of their life is vital to the overall health of your Goldie for years to come. Over time this can increase to up to 4 cups a day at 10 months old, though females should usually only need 3 cups a day. The amount you feed your puppy is often dependent on their size and sex. While they may have some growing left to do, it depends on your dog. Some Goldies will continue to experience growth spurts before their second birthday, while others will stay the same size. Large breeds can be at risk of growing too fast, which can make them more vulnerable to skeletal and weight problems when they get older. Golden retrievers are especially prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, which can be avoided through diet control. You should feed your Goldie between 3 — 4 cups of food per day over two meals. Adult dogs and puppies have different nutritional needs. This is important to take into consideration as you are establishing a feeding schedule for a Golden Retriever puppy. Puppies require more calories to support their rapid growth than adult dogs, but they also have much smaller stomachs, which means they get fuller faster. Because of this, puppies can easily overeat, especially Golden Retrievers. You can help your puppy avoid overeating by allowing them a short amount of time to eat, and then removing their bowl. All puppies grow a lot during their first year, but large breed puppies are more likely to suffer from negative health consequences as a result. In order to provide your Golden Retriever puppy with the most appropriate food to support their rapid growth, consider choosing a large breed puppy food. Goldie puppies need lots of protein, fibre, and fatty acids to support the development of their bodies and provide them with energy. These foods also take into account the difference in nutrient digestion between small and large breeds. Too much of these nutrients can cause your large breed puppy to develop skeletal abnormalities. So how much do you feed a Golden Retriever? Your adult Goldie could need anywhere between and 1, calories per day. The amount of food you feed your dog will be determined by a few important factors. The first thing to consider is the sex of your dog. On average, your male Golden Retriever will need slightly more food than a female dog. Senior dogs will usually be less active and so will need less food. Goldies in particular can have a lot of variation in the amount of food they need on a daily basis. No matter how much you feed your dog, it is ideal that you feed your adult Golden Retriever two meals a day at evenly spaced time intervals. Feeding your dog twice, once in the morning and again in the evening, can be useful for establishing a routine and avoiding overfeeding. This routine can also include exercise, and is useful for encouraging healthy behaviour around food and toilet training. Special Considerations Your Golden Retriever could be predisposed to several health conditions that are important to consider when you make decisions about their diet. Firstly, Golden Retrievers are known for their beautiful coats, but their skin can often become infected. Goldies love swimming, but this can cause problems if water irritates their skin. They can also be susceptible to atopic dermatitis, which causes extreme itchiness, resulting in licking and biting behaviours in dogs that can cause even more damage. For dogs prone to skin and coat issues, a fish-based diet can help alleviate symptoms. Fish contains plenty of fatty acids, which support coat and skin health, and rarely triggers any allergic reaction in dogs. Goldies often benefit from healthy grains in their diet, especially as avoiding them can actually leave your dog more vulnerable to nutritional dilated cardiomyopathy, or nutritional DCM. This heart disease is common in Golden Retrievers, and can be triggered by consuming too much grain-free pet food that contains legumes like lentils and peas. You should consider feeding your Golden Retriever foods that are full of grains and proteins like chicken or fish. These are the benefits and drawbacks of the three most popular options — wet food, a raw food diet, and dry food. Wet food can be a great option for dogs that need plenty of protein and fat, like working dogs or dogs with certain health conditions. It also hydrates your dog while they eat, which can be useful for dogs suffering from any illness. For dogs with highly restrictive diets, raw food prepared by you can be a great way to avoid allergens. You can have complete control over a raw diet, which does require a lot more work on your part, but can have great results. For instance, a Golden Retriever with heart issues should eat a low salt diet, which can be easier to achieve if you are preparing their meals from scratch. However, low quality kibbles tend to be made up of a lot of low quality fillers, which can be hard for your pup to digest. Whatever option you choose for your Goldie, make sure it is suitable for large breeds and contains high quality ingredients. This will help prevent degenerative health disorders in the long run. Your Golden Retriever will probably love food, and will probably try to eat anything you put in front of them, which means you need to help them avoid the negative consequences of overeating. Golden retrievers, like other large and active breeds, need plenty of exercise. Not only is this vital to their physical health, but it also ensures they grow up well socialised and mentally stimulated. As your Goldie grows from a puppy to an adult dog, the amount of meals they need a day will reduce as their digestive systems become more developed. Your dog will need two meals a day, once in the evening and once in the morning, from the age of 6 months.

A good dog breeder is registered in a breeders association and breeds according to the rules and guidelines of the respective breed association. In addition to participating in beauty and performance shows at dog shows, this also includes health checks on their breeding dogs. These papers show which ancestors were involved in the development of the puppy and whether inbreeding was carried out. What makes a serious dog breed? A reputable breeder is dedicated to their breed and usually only breeds this one breed. The prices that dog breeders charge for their puppies mostly flow back into dog breeding. A profit is hardly achieved with good and species-appropriate husbandry. How do I recognize a reputable breeder? First, make sure that the dog breed leaves a clean and well-groomed impression. The following points can also help you buy puppies from a reputable dog breeder: Do all animals look lively and healthy? Do the puppies grow up in the family instead of having to live in a kennel outside? Are the parent animals on-site? Are you allowed to visit the puppies several times? Is the breeder interested in your living conditions? Would they like to know as precisely as possible where their puppies will live? Does the dog breeder take special measures to give their puppies a good start in life? For example, do the puppies get to know car journeys and train journeys? Are they used to other pets and children? Does the breeder grant themself a right of repurchase in the event that the buyer wants to give their dog back? These points are indicators of a reputable breeder. In addition, you should make sure that the puppies are not over-vaccinated and dewormed before buying. Worming treatments in particular can cause permanent damage in puppies that cannot be justified by a potential benefit. If the dog breeder is critical of your questions, that is also a good sign. American Bulldog Breed Overview The American Bulldog is a fairly large breed with a height of inches for boys, inches for girls. Weight ranges from pounds in males, pounds in females. These dogs are strong, but proportionally built, and the breed has a rather formidable appearance. The exterior is a bit rough — American Bulldogs embody strength and power. Boys are larger and more massive, girls are slightly smaller, but without a hint of weakness or thin bones. The muzzle is elongated, wedge-shaped, the feet are not so clearly expressed. Cope with the role of hunters or detection dogs. Classic Johnson — massive and squat dogs similar to English bulldogs. The muzzle is square with a sharp stop. Often they have deep folds in the neck and head. These bulldogs are ideal for guards. Sometimes dog breeders include descriptions of two more types of the breed in the classification: Williamson — includes 2 subtypes: long-legged, extremely aggressive dogs and massive, balanced animals. Pantera are mini-bulldogs weighing up to 75 pounds, obtained by crossing classic and standard individuals. Modern breed members combine the traits of the Scott and Johnson types, as the main goal of breeders is to obtain hardy dogs with first-class performance. The main purpose of the American Bulldog is as a companion and bodyguard. Color and type of coat The body of the American Bulldog is covered with short fur, the length of which does not exceed 0. Permitted colors of the American breed: White — monochromatic or with small brindle or rufous markings. White-brindle, white-red from pale fawn to deep red — the background color can be either white or colored. Accordingly, in the first case, large spots of permitted colors will be scattered over the body, in the second — large white marks. Tiger, red-brindle — any shades are permissible from dark with red or fawn brindle to light with rare dark markings. The brighter and richer the colors, the better. Black, black and tan, blue, piebald with black markings without brindle, tricolor, marble colors, as well as the presence of a dark mask on the face are disqualifying defects of the breed. Before buying a puppy, it is recommended to get a full description of the breed — visit exhibitions, talk with breeders and other owners. Only an experienced dog breeder can handle a willful dog with a difficult character. It is important to correctly assess the strength and make sure that the future owner will definitely be able to subdue the dominant animal. It is better to buy a puppy from a reliable kennel or breeder. Sick pets or dogs with serious defects of temperament are often sold through ads on the Internet. Such an American bulldog is dangerous not only for others but also for the owner. A responsible breeder will be happy to tell you about the characteristics of the breed, the advantages and disadvantages of each puppy, not only give a verbal description but also demonstrate the litter and the parents. If mental instability is observed, it is worth contacting another nursery. Healthy American Bulldog puppies are active and curious, they do not show aggression and do not hide when they see a new person. Due to their obvious strength and agility, they are often viewed as a kind of cultural icon in America. Discover more about our American Bulldog puppies for sale below! Breed History In the past, the English bulldog was used by foreign immigrants who moved to South America and brought their dogs with them. The breed, however, became close to extinction after the second world war. Some breeders, John D. Johnson, and Alan Scott kept infusing several bulldogs together in the bid to breed the American Bulldog while monitoring its health and capabilities. Today, the American bulldog is completely rid of the fear of being extinct and has become one of the most popular dog breeds in the country. Temperament The American bulldog is many sizes larger than the English Bulldog; however, they are quite similar when it comes to their temperament. It is basically a huge, cuddly, lap dog that loves children and is very affectionate. It is brave, confident and extremely loyal to its owners. They can be quite reserved when around strangers as they like to mark their territories. When trained from a young age, the American Bulldog will display an impressive level of intelligence. They are not so friendly with other strange dogs and mostly like to keep to themselves. Environment As earlier stated, the American bulldog is a fun-loving, happy dog that thrives in a family setting. The perfect environment for this breed would be a home with a large backyard that is well fenced-in. Since they are very energetic and must be kept active, it is imperative to their growth that they have ample space to run around during the day. This is crucial for their mental and physical well-being. For dog lovers who live in apartments, the American bulldog might not be the best option for them. This is because there is inadequate space for them and being left alone would adversely affect their mental health. They can also become very irritable and destructive if left alone for long periods as they need constant mental and physical stimulation. Exercise The American Bulldog needs about two hours of outdoor exercise on a daily basis. It goes without saying that this breed is not suitable for people who work many hours every day. This dog breed requires basic physical and mental stimulation like jogging, walking, chasing balls, playing fetch, farm work, agility, and basic obedience exercises. Due to the temperament of the American Bulldog, it has to get as much exercise preferably in the outdoors. If its exercise requirements are not consistently met, this dog breed will take out its frustration in your home by chewing apart and basically destroying everything it comes in contact with while running around. Grooming The American Bulldog has quite a short coat with a minimized length and this feature makes it easy to groom. Brushing their coats weekly is usually enough when it comes to grooming the American Bulldog as they do not shed a lot. They also need thorough baths weekly or as needed as this will keep the shedding in check. The average American Bulldog can grow to 58kg for males and 41kg for females. However, it is important that their diets are closely monitored to keep them from getting overweight. We specialize in breeding Mini Goldendoodles as well as a few other breeds. We also have partnered up with several other high quality breeders that raise mini goldendoodle pups that meet our strict genetic criteria and testing. So we usually have a good selection of very high quality puppies. View Our Available Puppies! Not all mini Goldendoodles are equal, there are a few different versions to choose from each having a little different genetic background based on the pups parents. We will explain all the differences in Mini Goldendoodle puppies and how they are bred below. We raise all versions of the mini goldendoodle breed. F1 Mini Goldendoodle Pups. A F1 puppy is also known as a First Generation puppy. The puppies mother is a Golden Retriever and the pups dad is a Mini Poodle. This version of mini goldendoodle usually has soft wavy or curly puppy fur. They will shed until they lose their puppy fur, after shedding they will shed a lot less, but will shed. This version is partially hypoallergenic and usually requires low maintenance. F1 mini goldendoodles usually need to be groomed every 6 months along with daily brushing to keep their curly hair from matting and getting tangled. The dogs usually grow up having great temperaments similar to golden retrievers. They usually get about inches high at the shoulder and range in weight from pounds. F1b Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1b is known as a second-generation mini goldendoodle with the pups mother being already an F1 Goldendoodle and the pups dad being a mini poodle also. So the difference between F1 and F1b is that the mom is not a golden retriever but an actual F1 Goldendoodle. They also have very soft curly hair but with almost no shedding. This F1b version is semi-hypoallergenic and a better choice for anyone who has pet allergies. The F1b also should be brushed on a daily basis but will need to be groomed more frequently then a F1. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is recommended to keep their coat in perfect condition. F1b Mini goldendoodles get around 18 to 20 inches tall at the shoulders and range between pounds in weight. F1bb Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1bb goldendoodle is also known as a third-generation mini goldendoodle. This mini goldendoodle version has a coat more similar to a poodle than of a golden retriever. This is because the pup is more of a poodle than a retriever. Making it the very best version for anyone with pet allergies. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is required to help prevent knots or matting. This version is super intelligent and loving, and usually seems to have more energy than the other versions of Mini goldendoodles. This version is usually smaller in size, weighing around pounds and only getting inches tall at the shoulders. The smaller size makes them a great size for smaller homes and apartments. By Chris We all expect our fur babies to look a certain way when we hear what kind of dog they are, regardless of how much we love them. Whether you have a dog that was supposed to be athletic but looks like he visits the donut shop too often, or a dog you thought would have curly hair but has bone straight hair instead. My Labradoodle looks like a Lab Help! Genetic Crossing Labradoodles, Goldendoodles , and the like are all one specific breed crossed with a Poodle. A comparative example is when one parent of a human child has green eyes and one parent has brown eyes, the child inherits the genetic code for both of these traits. So, what eye color will the child have? Why do some Labradoodles look like Labradors? The genetic crossing of dogs through mating works through the same process as humans. The offspring will possess genetic traits of both parent canines but will only display the dominant characteristics. However, the recessive traits are retained and can still be passed on to other offspring. That means, depending on the genetic code in your dog, she could produce a puppy that looks completely different than she does! As dog breeders continue to play with the genetics involved in crossbreeding dogs, they show that not all Labradoodles are the same. That can explain why the traits you see in your pet may not look like the ones you found in an internet search. Labradoodle sitting in the studio. However, the generational structure of crossbred dogs goes far beyond this. If a breeder were to take two F1 Labradoodles and mate them, the result would be a second-generation variant. The list of generations goes on and on as this sequence progresses. Some argue that as the generations continue, the consistency in traits lessens. For example, an F4 or F5 Labradoodle may start to look less like a crossbreed and more like a poorly bred Poodle or Labrador Retriever. The F1 generations have fewer overall genetic codes to work with, meaning they will display traits more similar to their parents than the following generations. As the hierarchy of genetics increases, the possible combinations that offspring can inherit multiply, and there will inevitably be different variations in any given litter. However, breeders can get a little crazy with it also by breeding an F1b Labradoodle. So what does the new letter in our generation name mean? A backcrossed canine refers to a first-generation offspring being crossed with a full bred. For example, an F1b Labradoodle could be a first-generation Labradoodle crossed with a full-bred Poodle. It goes without saying the Poodle traits are going to be more prominent than the Labrador Retriever traits in the above example. Crossbreeding dogs is a game of genetics. Many breeders have mastered the art of genetic manipulation to produce a result that people want. However, the results can still vary widely. Canine offspring of any breed inherit genetic makeup from their parents, and all of these traits can vary. However, the offspring will often look very similar to their parents. The same is not true for hybrid dogs. Because the crossbred offspring come from two completely different breeds, they inherit traits that can be far different from their parents. After all, that is the point of crossbreeding! You can be sure your pup is wholly unique. There are some very notable differences between Labrador Retrievers and Poodles. So, let us take a look at their different traits and how they typically combine. Labrador Retriever vs. Poodle It is no secret that Labs typically have straight hair, and most commonly in three colors: black, brown, and blonde. Labs are water dogs; thus, their coat is designed to shed water. The straight hair of this breed can be attributed to the dominant gene from the parent dogs. They also are typically more bulky dogs, not necessarily overweight but just appear to be more sturdy. The head and muzzle of a lab are generally more box-shaped. The coat of a Poodle is known to be curly. Curly hair comes from the dominance of the CUc gene, otherwise known as the curly hair gene. Although there are more Poodle color variations, the most common are similar to that of the Labrador Retrievers. Poodles are typically taller, having longer legs and a slimmer build. Their head and muzzle are also more narrow than their Labrador Retriever counterparts. Although they have differences in their physical appearance, Poodles and Labs share many of the same traits when it comes to temperament, loyalty, and athleticism. Labrador Retriever and Poodle are both staying outdoors. Should I Be Concerned? The short answer is no. You should not be concerned if your Labradoodle looks like a Labrador Retriever. It is always best practice to do your due diligence when going through a breeder to ensure their quality and reliability for a multitude of reasons. As discussed above, each trait that any animal possesses and displays comes from the genes they inherited from their parents. First-generation crossbred dogs will inherit traits from both of their full-blood parents. This makes the offspring display many variations in appearance. Remember that these traits can be different across a litter. Typically, half of the litter will display slightly different traits than the other half. In a lower generation, F3 and on, the genetic traits passed on are coming from parents who have already been crossbred. However, as mentioned previously, this has been known to disrupt the consistency of genetic traits. If your Labradoodle looks like a Lab, you should still be able to see the obvious differences between your pup and a full-blood Labrador Retriever. All of these variations only make your pet unique and are simply caused by the genetic traits they inherited. Straight hair or other typical features of a Lab do not make your beloved canine any less of a Labradoodle. These traits can make your Labradoodle more unique than others seen walking down the street. So, set aside your expectations and embrace the differences! Your pup is truly one of a kind. My wife and I love playing with our active miniature Labradoodle Max. We want all Oodle puppies to be healthy and happy, have lots of fun and be part of the family. Load More. Finding flat coat Labradoodle puppies A flat coated Labradoodle will look the most like a purebred Labrador. Other names for this coat type include straight coated and hair type Labradoodle. Labradoodles with flat coats will shed more than those with wavy and curly fur, but they will have much lower grooming requirements. They can come in any of the typical Labradoodle colors, and will most often be friendly, intelligent, and energetic dogs. What is a Flat Coated Labradoodle? Flat coated Labradoodles can look quite different to other Doodle mixes, because their fur tends to be straight and flat against their bodies. Like other Labradoodles, this mix will be a combination of the Labrador Retriever and the Poodle. Some breeders may use Miniature Poodles to create a flat coat mini Labradoodle, but others will use the Standard Poodle to produce a large dog. And, Labradoodles with this coat type may also go by other names. Some breeders may call them hair type Doodles, or straight coat Labradoodles. But, no matter what description is used, they will have fur that resembles a Lab more than a Poodle. Can Labradoodles Have Straight Hair? It might come as a surprise to find out that Labradoodles with straight hair exist! When most people picture a Labradoodle, they imagine a dog with curly or wavy, low shedding fur. After all, the original Labradoodle was created to be good for people with allergies! And Labrador coats are known for their high shedding qualities. A first generation Labradoodle has one purebred Poodle parent, and one purebred Labrador parent. To achieve puppies with wavy or curly fur, most breeders will mix two f1 Labradoodles with similar fur, or will mix a Labradoodle with a Poodle. The traits of f1 Labradoodles can be quite varied, since puppies can inherit any combination of genes from its parents. So, later generations are more predictable, and breeders can harness popular traits, like a curly coat. But, flat coated Labradoodles are absolutely possible, and for some people these Doodles make a better pet! Flat coated Labradoodles will often have a double layered coat, just like their Labrador parent. Hair coat Labradoodles may have some wavy patches of fur, but in general their hair will be straight. Other than this, they will be similar to other Labradoodles. They will grow to be large dogs, with a healthy shaped muzzle, floppy ears, and a long, curved tail. Their coloring will depend on that of their parents. Flat coated Labradoodles might come in one of the three standard Labrador shades black, yellow, and chocolate , or one of the many Poodle colors! Do Flat Coated Labradoodles Shed? Labradoodles with straight fur are the most likely to shed out of all the Labradoodle coat types. In the hotter months, Labradoodles will shed heavily to lose their dense undercoat. And, if they take after their Lab parent, they will likely shed moderately all year round. All of them will contain allergens in their dander and saliva. Grooming is less necessary in flat coated Labradoodles, since their fur is less likely to tangle than wavy or curly fur. There is no particular Labradoodle generation that will have flat hair. But, this trait is most likely in first generation mixes, who have an equal influence of Poodle and Labrador DNA. In subsequent generations, most breeders will increase the amount of Poodle influence to increase the chance of traits like a curly coat. Hair coat Labradoodle fur can still grow quite long, so grooming will also help to prevent any painful knots and tangles. As a general rule, you will want to brush them a couple of times a week, but this might increase in high shedding seasons. You should groom your Labradoodle from a young age, so they are familiar with the process, and comfortable with being brushed and bathed. A slicker brush can be great for giving your Labradoodle a quick once over and removing any dead fur. But, in those heavy shedding periods, you may need to use a deshedding tool as well. When bathing your Labradoodle, make sure to use dog-safe products. And, make sure you dry them thoroughly. Dog hair dryers can be perfect at getting into that dense undercoat! Floppy Labradoodle ears are prone to ear infections, so pay attention to them, too! All Labradoodle puppies will have similar coats. Over the first year of their life, they will shed their puppy coat to reveal their adult coat. But, experienced Labradoodle breeders can be skilled at predicting adult coat types even in those early weeks. To increase your chances of getting a Labradoodle with straight fur, choose a first generation mix. But, be aware of bad breeders who may be looking to profit on this popular mix. Choose the most reputable breeders you can find. The best breeders will be happy to answer all of your questions, will have evidence of health testing, and will be happy to show you where their dogs and puppies live. Make sure the mom is friendly and healthy, and that all puppies look healthy. Avoid backyard breeders and puppy mills. Puppies and dogs from these breeders are often mistreated and more likely to have health and behavioral issues. But, they can make a wonderful companion for someone that loves the Doodle breed, and wants a lower-maintenance dog! They need less frequent grooming, but have the same high energy levels and mental stimulation needs as any other Doodle! Do you have a straight hair Labradoodle at home? We would love to hear about them in the comments! Readers Also Liked. Examples include allergies, eczema and sebaceous adenitis. Finally, ear infections, obesity and bloat can be largely controlled by lifestyle choices. Labradoodle Labrador mix grooming Pedigree Labradors need relatively little grooming. Their medium length, straight coat is too short to tangle. But, a regular habit of brushing, and occasionally bathing, your Lab can help a lot with managing shedding. It needs daily brushing from root to tip, to remove dirt and debris, and prevent painful mats forming. Is a Labradoodle Labrador mix hypoallergenic? Dogs of all types produce allergens in their saliva and to a lesser extent their sweat and urine , not their hair or dander. In fact, non shedding coats can be more problematic than shedding coats, because of the time you need to spend up close with your dog brushing them every day. If you have allergies, ask to spend time with a puppy on several occasions before you bring them home. Do Labradoodle Labrador mixes make good family pets? The first deliberate Labradoodles were bred as service dogs, but more recently they have surged as companion dogs for families of all sorts. Labradors and Poodles are both affectionate and devoted to their human families, and known for their patience with children. Very young children should be supervised with dogs at all times, but a Labradoodle mixed with Labrador is a great fit for a household with older kids and teenagers. Since they are very playful and thrive off lots of interaction and engagement every day, a household with lots of people to help out, or a retired household with plenty of free time is their perfect environment. F1b Labradoodles are not well suited to being left alone for several hours a day. Labs and Poodles were both bred to be team players and very focused on their handler. What kind of owner would you recommend them to? Let us know in the comments section down below! But, occasionally, some may backcross a Labradoodle with a Labrador, to create the Labradoodle Lab mix! This mix will usually have a straight, double layered coat. They tend to be moderate shedders, but their fur can be less prone to tangles than a curlier Labradoodle mix. Some breeders will backcross Labradoodles, creating f1b or f2b mixes. In most of these cases, the breeder will backcross a Labradoodle to a purebred Poodle. Most breeders will choose to backcross to a Poodle in the hopes of passing on the genes that cause curly, low shedding fur. Backcrossing to a Labrador increases the chances of a mix puppy having Labrador traits. But, the outcome of mixed breed dogs is always a little unpredictable. So, Labradoodle and Labrador mix puppies can still be quite unique! A Labradoodle Labrador mix will usually be a medium to large dog. Their height will most often range between 18 and 24 inches, whilst their weight tends to be anywhere from 50 to 80 lbs. Labradoodles are usually smaller than Labradors, and puppies will most often fall between the sizes of their parents. On top of this, females are usually smaller than males. But, if you want a large dog, look for a male puppy. Coat Type and Colors Labradoodles are usually described as hypoallergenic, but no dog breed is truly hypoallergenic! However, a Labradoodle with curly hair is less likely to shed as much around your home, thanks to the Poodle influence. A Labradoodle Labrador cross will usually have a straight, double layered coat like their Lab parent. Their coat might be dense like a Lab, or slightly thinner. Colors can vary in this mix. Though Labradors come in three standard colors black, yellow, and chocolate , Labradoodles have a very wide variety of colors. Take a look at the Labradoodle parent to see what your mix puppy might inherit! Labradoodle Labrador Mix Temperament Like appearance, temperament can vary in a mixed breed dog. But, there are plenty of traits that we can predict in a Labrador Labradoodle mix. Both parents are known to be energetic and people-oriented dogs. This mix is likely to get along with everyone, as long as you socialize them properly from a young age to new experiences, animals, and people. They are eager to please, and have plenty of energy to burn every day. This mix is very intelligent. Given their intelligence and eagerness to please, they often take well to training. But, they can also become easily bored. And, a bored Labradoodle Labrador mix may display unwanted and undesirable behaviors like digging, chewing, barking, stealing things, and so on. And, dedicate time every day to playing together. But, when your puppy is older, you can really get creative with the types of exercise you try. This mix will usually enjoy retrieving games, like fetch. But, they may also enjoy swimming, hiking, scent-work, running with you, rally, agility and more. Ensuring your Labrador Labradoodle mix gets enough exercise each day will go a long way towards keeping them happy and healthy. Training a Labradoodle Labrador Mix Since this mix is eager to please and intelligent, they will usually pick up new cues quickly. A Labradoodle Lab mix will usually be very eager to work for training treats! Keep your training sessions relatively short, and always consistent. And, remember that every dog will be different, so some may take a little longer to grasp some cues than others! As a medium to large dog breed, basic obedience is a must. This will prevent any jumping up at potentially fragile or nervous visitors! They often have double layered coats, but the density and length of their fur will vary from one dog to the next. Generally, this mix will shed moderately all year round, and slightly higher in summer months. Since their fur is straight, any shedding hairs will fall straight out, so you may have to clean them from your house more regularly than you would with a typical Labradoodle mix. Regular grooming can help you keep on top of shedding. You may want to increase the frequency of this during heavy shedding periods. The best grooming methods will depend on the type of coat your mix inherits. Many owners prefer going to a professional groomer for this! Studies have shown that mixed breeds live, on average, longer than purebred dogs. Labradors live an average of 12 years, so you can expect a healthy Labradoodle Labrador mix to live to around this age, if not longer. However, a Labradoodle Labrador mix can still be prone to a number of health conditions, including those common in the parent breeds. Here are some of the major issues that this mix could be prone to: Arthritis. What happened?? The magic of genetics and crossing different dog breeds means that Labradoodles can inherit any mix of qualities from each of their parents. Some Labradoodles look very Labrador-esque indeed. But they might have other qualities in their temperament which are more strongly reminiscent of their Poodle parent. Why does my Labradoodle look like a Lab? Labradoodles are frequently associated with a curly coat which resembles that of the Poodle. If your Labradoodle has a straight coat, that means their genes for coat texture came from the Labrador Retriever. These dogs are often called flat coat or straight hair Labradoodles. Poodle vs Labrador Coat Labradors and Poodles share a number of traits. These two very popular breeds are both highly intelligent, extremely loyal, require plenty of exercise, and make great family pets. But when it comes to physical appearance, no one has ever mistaken a Lab for a Poodle. Poodle Coat The Poodle has a single-layer coat that is dense and curly. Many people refer to them hypoallergenic dogs, but the truth is that no dog is completely allergen-free. It is true that Poodles shed less than most other breeds, but when they lose hair it tends to get trapped in their coarse, curly coat. Poodle coats also come in a wide array of eye-catching colors like apricot, red, blue, and silver. Poodle Grooming There is a downside to the Poodle coat, and that is its extensive grooming requirements. Curly hair gets tangled and matted very easily. These dogs need daily brushing and regular visits to a professional groomer, because like human hair, Poodle fur keeps growing continuously. This low-shedding coat is also associated with Labradoodles. Labrador Coat The Labrador has a double coat, or two layers of fur. They consist of a top coat or guard coat that is short and wiry in texture. And underneath, a lighter, softer coat which works as an insulator. Together these two layers protect his skin from harmful UV rays and work as a water repellent. Coat colors include black, yellow, and chocolate, but there can be some variations within these shades. Labrador Grooming Compared to the Poodle, Labrador grooming is a breeze. Their coat only requires occasional bathing. In fact, bathing a Lab too often can strip away natural oils and leave their skin dry and itchy. Brushing should be done once a week, but this increases during shedding season. And unlike Poodles, Labs shed prolifically. Like any Labradoodle, straight hair Labradoodles are the result of mating a Labrador and a Poodle. But what exactly happened to their coat, which made it so Labrador-like? Curly coats on Poodles and Labradoodles are produced by the curly coat gene, commonly abbreviated to CuC. Dogs who inherit it from both parents like Poodles have tightly curled hair. What about Labradoodles? First generation Labradoodles inherit one copy of the CuC gene from their Poodle parent. Which means that it produces a coat somewhere on a spectrum between curly and straight. All first generation Labradoodles are somewhere on this scale — some very close to one end or the other, and some more in the middle. A Labradoodle which looks a lot like a Lab has a short, straight coat because their single copy of the CuC gene has had very little impact on their coat. Lots of people particularly desire a Labradoodle with a curly coat. It could be because they prefer the look, or for its low-shedding quality. To improve the probability of this, some breeders offer litters of F1b Labradoodles. What is an F1b Labradoodle? Crossing an F1 Labradoodle with a purebred Poodle will typically make the Poodle traits more dominant. On average, in a litter of F1b puppies from a Labradoodle and a Poodle: Half the puppies will be born with one copy of the CuC gene, and be on the wavy coated spectrum. And half will be born with two copies of the gene, which means their coat will be tightly curled. They will probably shed less than a purebred Lab, but considerably more than curly-haired Labradoodles. This is because a straight coat will have less Poodle genetics. But remember, when it comes to early generation mixed breeds there are no guarantees. Here are some tips for managing it: Regular brushing will remove many of the loose hairs. This is a good time to bond with your dog as Labradoodles love to be around people as much as possible. Both parents were bred to retrieve game from water, so your Labradoodle is likely to love swimming. This is an excellent way to wash away excess hair without stripping away essential oils on their skin. Make sure your Labradoodle gets a healthy, balanced diet, as this can also affect hair and skin quality. Foods rich in zinc and omega 3 fatty acids will keep their coat shiny and help control shedding. My Labradoodle Looks Like A Lab — Summary Mixed breed dogs can inherit any mix of physical characteristics from their parents, which means their is a lot of variation in Labradoodle looks. First generation Labradoodles only inherit one copy of the gene for a curly coat, which results in a coat which is somewhere on a spectrum between wavy and straight. Labradoodles with a short straight coat tend to be the ones which most strongly resemble Labradors to our eyes. Does your Labradoodle look like a Lab? Tell us about your pet in the comments! References and Further Reading. I went to meet Mike to talk about an upcoming litter and Bailey was sitting by herself. I pretty much changed my mind and wanted her immediately. She was introduced to a 6 year old cocker spaniel with and IVDD condition and they became best friends. Great Temperament, Incredibly smart and absolutely beautiful addition to my family. Mike has been following up since I got her checking to see if I had any issues. His training packet was detailed and if you follow the crate training and feeding regiment you will have no problems. Angelica I brought home an F2 labradoodle from here. My pups has already learned several commands within a few weeks of having him. The breeder has plenty of space for the pups and you can tell that there is a lot of care put into the environment. My dog has a great temperament and deals with people well. Upon the first meeting my pups was excited to greet people you can tell he had been socialized well. Mike does well with communication and answers any questions. Highly recommended! Javier Sanchez Got my black lab from Mike trained. He is very good and is comfortable with a crate, walking and great temperament. Overall an awesome dog from a great breeder! Maura Eaton My 12 year old son did all the research on Mike and his company. He had 5 star reviews across the board. Once we saw the picture of Zoey, a Chocolate Labradoodle, we knew we had to meet her. Mike's business is clean, the dogs are all loved by him and well trained. Zoey was Stage 1 trained. This is my first dog as an adult and Mike was excellent in providing advice and recommendations. After we adopted Zoey, Mike would periodically check-in on how Zoey was adjusting to her new family and home. As you can see in the pictures, she is very happy. Mike knew her personality well - smart, sweet and social. A perfect fit and addition to our family. He worked on training with the puppy before we brought him home, which was a big help in the adjustment! I would recommend Mike to anyone looking for a labradoodle puppy. Our puppy has been the best addition to our family and we have enjoyed working with Mike. John Schmadeke We were looking for a labradoodle puppy from a reputable and experienced breeder. Mike was super helpful, and we really appreciated that he cared so much about things like genetics and DNA testing for the dogs. Mike has always been available to answer our questions and to give advice. Tom Riniker We found Mike to be very professional, knowledgeable, and helpful when we purchased a puppy from him. His kennels are clean and organized, and his puppies are well cared for. He really loves his career and it shows! He has followed up with us on numerous occasions regarding the health and well-being of our puppy, and I always know I can reach him if I have questions. Thanks for everything, Mike! Yunhua Chen I have bought a stage 2 F1 labradoodle from Mike. His name is Zen, and just like his name, he is a well-behaved and well-trained little man. He only cried about 15 - 30 minutes during the first few nights and later he was sound asleep. I highly recommend Mike as a breeder because not only he deeply cares about the dogs, but also he has the expertise to make the dog the perfect match for you. Michelle Balchunas Mike was absolutely wonderful to deal with and very helpful with adding a new puppy to our family. If you are looking for a lab to add to your family we would highly recommend working with Mike. Charles Arnold Mike was a great help with our new puppy, Archie. Great experience… and a great dog. Junie is gentle, kind and very loving. She's also extremely athletic and smart. Working with Mike was a very smooth process and his "dog siting" service has proved helpful as I do travel on occasion. Having someone I could trust to care for Junie is super helpful. Mike James I recently had the fortunate privilege of working with Mike to find my next pup. For multiple reasons, the breed is perfect for me - the temperament, lifestyle often on the water , and hypoallergenic fits a tough lifestyle. I without hesitation recommend you work with Mike if you are looking for an amazing pup and great support network. Charlie is so gentle. He was just outside getting petted by his fan club, the neighbors. He licks. I got him the week of July 4th he was outside during that noise. He looks at noise. One of his other puppies was the same way, gentle. Day one he knew the trail through the woods back to our house. Charlie is a beautiful Chocolate lab with the softest hair. I got him at 16 weeks. You have no idea how helpful that is. Of course you want a healthy dog. Took the shots like a champ. The Vet remarked how firm his joints were. Yes he lets you brush his teeth! He goes to the door when he has to go. Another reason I wanted a 16 week pup. Peanut butter to continue gentle licks on my fingers. He always gets small chicken or liver for COME. You should see him come. Is Charlie gentle because some hunting dogs have a gentle mouth or is he gentle because Mike treated him right? Oh do exactly as Mike says on the take home instructions, he knows his dogs! Highly recommend! We brought our pup home with all the documentation of his superior genetics. Mike also sends several handouts which help prepare you for puppy ownership and ensure a smooth transition for your pup to his new home! In addition to his exceptional breeding he is exceptionally well-trained. We opted for a stage 2 puppy and not only does he sit, lay down, stay, he has an incredibly calm demeanor and his additional exposure to other dogs was also incredible. He is so well-tempered and well-behaved due to his additional training. We are so happy and in love with our sweet boy! Brent Viditz-Ward We were looking for a chocolate lab puppy for a long time from a reputable breeder and our experience with Mike was wonderful. He took time to get to know us and make sure that the dog was going to a good home and is always available to answer questions, give advice, etc. I highly recommend Mike and his puppies! M Fowkes Mike is a fantastic breeder. We got an F1 puppy from Mike. She is a sweet beautiful girl. Before she was born Mike knew what the puppies would look like generally, and was really easy to communicate with. He is very responsive when I had a lot of questions. He is like that even now that my puppy is 4 months old…available to answer questions and be supportive. Josie Palma-Aurelio We stumbled on this website when we were looking for our next fur baby. All the reviews speak truthful about Mike. He calls us to check on Nala for updates and gives us pointers on how to take care of her. Nala is such a lovable puppy and we are so happy to have her. We highly recommend! Juan Tellez Mike was a great helping my family and puppy get adjusted to our home. You can tell Mike has a lot of dedication and love towards his dogs. Snoop has been a great addition to our family! We are first time pet owners and Mike handheld us through the entire adoption process. His reference material, responsiveness and his genuine care for the puppies has helped us navigate the critical period of 12 weeks smoothly. The puppy is super smart outwitted me in a game of hide n seek when he was 10 weeks old! He is a bundle of joy! We are first time pet owners and had a lot of questions! He is always enthusiastic in answering any questions we have and supporting us before and after getting the pup! He cares about his dogs and pups and it shows in the research he has done and the knowledge he has about them! He has a lot of information on his website about the breed, food, toys and snacks! He also gives a couple of handouts when we book a pup with him and some when we take them home! Those helped a lot in the preparation for our pup! When you take them home, he also gives you details about the breed, vaccination records, and DNA testing done for the litter! Our girl, Shuri, is very energetic and curious! She does really well when we train her and has already learnt so much! For anyone looking for a labradoodle, Mike is the best! Jocelyn I highly recommend Mike. We are first time dog owners and he made the process so easy for us. Our labradoodle has made an excellent addition to our family! A flat coat Labradoodle is another name for a straight haired Labradoodle. They take more after the Labrador side of the breed with a scruffy medium length coat rather than a curly or wavy coat that people usually associate with the breed. Standard sized Straight Hair Labradoodles grow to 51 to 66cm and weigh 23 to 45kg. On the other hand, Miniature Straight Hair Labradoodles get to 40 to 51cm in height and weigh 12 to 23kg. Yes, Straight Haired Labradoodles need basic grooming like all dogs, requiring a weekly brush to remove shedded hair and the occasional bath to keep them clean. Nevertheless, they do not need to be taken to the groomer for a trim every weeks like their curly coat relatives which can save owners quite a bit of money yearly. Do Straight Haired Labradoodles Shed? Yes, Straight Haired Labradoodles shed quite considerably like their Labrador parents. They are the opposite of Curly or Wavy Haired Labradoodles who hardly shed at all. No, Straight Haired Labradoodles are not hypoallergenic as they shed due to the dominance of Labrador genes over Poodle genes. They are unlike Wavy or Curly Haired Labradoodles which are hypoallergenic due to their long, curly coat that needs to be cut. That being said, straight haired Labradoodles are more hypoallergenic than a purebred Labrador. You can read our full Labradoodle shedding guide here. This is most likely to occur in a first generation Labradoodle F1 Labradoodle when a Labrador and Poodle are bred together rather than two Labradoodles. Whilst most people believe that all Labradoodles have a wavy or curly coat, it is actually very common for Labradoodles to have straight haired coat, taking after their Labrador parent more than the Poodle. Some Labradoodles look more like Labradors then Poodles, especially when they have a straight coat instead of a wavy or curly one. This occurs when Labradoodles do not inherit the curly coat gene called the Cu Locus gene and most commonly occurs for F1 Labradooodles. F2 Labradoodle is when an F1 Labradoodle is bred with another F1 Labradoodle resulting in a fifty-fifty chance of Straight Hair Labradoodles occurring in the litter. If you are looking for a Straight Hair Labradoodle you will want to get an F1 or F2 litter as they have the highest change of the straight hair gene of the Labrador coming through. No, not all F1 Labradoodles will have straight hair however a significant percentage of the litter will. F1 Labradoodles can have any coat type from wavy to curly to straight as it is a first generation breed of a Labrador Retriever and Poodle. No, Straight Hair Labradoodles do not have a double coat like their Labrador parent. Instead they have a single coat. As the weather gets hotter, Straight Hair Labradoodles will start shedding a little more than usual. Nevertheless, colour changes as expected for maturing Labradoodles. The colour of their coats often change colour or fade several shades lighter as they become an adult. Check out the adorable Labradoodle puppies that are currently available here! Labradoodles are well-known for their happy-go-lucky temperaments. In fact, there are quite a few key considerations that set ethical breeders apart from others. So, before we reveal to you our list of the best ethical Labradoodle breeders, here are the most important things you should look for when choosing an ethical Labradoodle breeder in Maine. Ethical Labradoodle breeders in Maine test all of their parent dogs for various genetic conditions. Health and genetic testing greatly minimizes the risk of the puppies inheriting serious health conditions, which can affect their quality of life and even their lifespan. Speaking of which, ethical breeders also provide at least a two-year health guarantee for any serious genetic conditions. Information about the health guarantee should always come in written form with your adoption documents. However, we recommend you also do your own research and check for reviews on Google, Facebook, Yelp, Reddit, or on your local online forums and communities such as here at Doodle Doods. In addition to that, if any of your friends, family members, or neighbors have recently adopted a Labradoodle, ask them about their own experiences with Labradoodle breeders in Maine. Some breeders are also recommended by Good Dog or Goldendoodles. All of these organizations require that their certified breeders follow their strict health and genetic testing protocols and ethical breeding practices. Today, there are very few Labradoodle breeders in Maine who are affiliated with any of the organizations we mentioned above, especially compared to some other states. Their main focus is on breeding mild-tempered pups that have allergy-friendly, low-shedding coats. What Makes This Breeder Unique? Log Cabin Labradoodles is a state-licensed breeding facility. Their puppies are born and raised in a large, sunlit nursery, where the breeders spend most of their time nurturing them. However, they also spend time with the pups in the family living areas, where they get to socialize and get used to all the regular household sights and sounds. Puppy Application Hi Everyone!! I continue to be the best dog in the world and everyone wants to buy me from Mom. I am still working as a therapy dog at the York Hospital and when Mom goes there without me everyone asks where Bentley is. I was banned from the pharmacy because while Mom was talking I was slowly and quietly sneaking candy bars off the bottom shelf. Love, Bentley and his family Christine, Hope this finds you well. Just a quick note, we know you are very busy these days. Cello just turned a year old and he is such a gem. Smart, sweet, gentle, and I could go on. We are so blessed to have found you and him and cannot thank you enough. It is sometimes embarrassing when we take him to the dog park as people often seem to like him better than their own dogs. He is by far the best dog. On that note, we would like to get on the waiting list for another puppy to get Cello a sister. Thank you again, so much! Hello Chriistine, We will never be able to express enough gratitude for you allowing us to have Griffin in our lives. He is so amazing. David is smitten. Hi Christine, I wanted to give you a quick update on Hops. He is an absolutely amazing dog. He loves hiking, camping, swimming, agility. There really isn't too much that he doesn't enjoy doing. She visits all the tables and enjoys getting lots of attention. Who wouldn't? They are basically a small version of the Standard Poodle, and any deviation from this is a hint that you may be looking at a Poodle mix for example, a Labradoodle , Goldendoodle , or Cockapoo rather than a purebred dog. These crossbreeds are just as loveable as the Poodle itself, so be sure to check them out too. So, your black Toy Poodle will look much like a scaled-down version of the black Standard Poodle. They are tiny, no more than 10 inches at the withers, and they have their coats clipped in a wide range of styles, which often fools people into believing they are different breeds. Matted fur can be extremely painful to dogs and may even damage their skin, leading to infections. The black Toy Poodle has beautiful dark eyes and black points the nose, eye-rims, and toe-nails , which is probably why so many dog lovers find it so charming! Many dog breeds change color as they grow, which is just part of the fun of dog genetics. Blues are so convincing that they are often registered as black dogs! This gives the dog its beautiful silvery look. However, they should have the knowledge and expertise to tell whether a black puppy will stay black as it grows. This highlights the need to only use trusted and reputable Toy Poodle breeders. That puts these little dogs in the same league as the average Chihuahua or Yorkshire Terrier. Now, you might wonder how these figures can be so precise. You may say to yourself, surely some are taller than 10 inches and heavier than 6 pounds? Mini Poodles, just for comparison, weigh between 10 and 15 pounds and measure 10 to 15 inches at the shoulder. Any toy dogs lighter than 4 pounds are within the teacup category, but this is a contentious issue see the next section for further information. Toy Poodle pups are at risk of hypoglycemia low blood sugar levels , just like other small breeds of dogs. Pups that become hypoglycemic suffer from trembling, seizures, weakness, loss of appetite, lack of coordination, and lethargy. Thankfully, most pups grow out of this as they develop into full-grown dogs. And the smaller they are, the more popular they become, which has led to the breeding of teacup dogs. While these tiny pooches are undeniably adorable, some of the methods used to produce them are unethical. As a result, these tiny dogs can face serious health issues during their lifetimes. Very often, the runts of the litter are used, as these are the smallest pups. These dogs will usually have some kind of health defect that has caused them to be small. Some breeders also deliberately withhold essential nutrition from the pups, which stunts their growth. The truth is that few breeders and certainly not reputable ones will advertise their pups as teacup Poodles. The black Toy Poodle is small enough already, and to purposely breed smaller pups is asking for trouble. Ethical breeders will breed for health, temperament, and physical appearance. They will never deliberately attempt to produce puppies below 5 pounds in weight, which qualifies a dog as a teacup size. All of their dogs are purebred, whereas other breeders may try to cross a Poodle with a smaller breed to produce a teacup version. Of the 11 Poodle colors that the Kennel Clubs and the Poodle Club recognize, apricot and blue are the rarest colors. Red Toy Poodles are another less common color. The black Poodle keeps licking his lips due to irritation. However, these dogs begin to fade as they age, with owners noticing the difference once their dog is about one year old. Aside from their color, black Toy Poodles have the following characteristics: Long, curly coat Pointy muzzle Sizing up a Black Toy Poodle Black Toy Poodles are the smallest officially recognized breed with the AKC there are unofficial teacup varieties that are even smaller. They also typically weigh between four and six pounds. In contrast, Miniature Poodles stand between 10 to 15 inches, and Standard Poodles stand at over 15 inches. But when it comes down to it, the Toy, Miniature, and Standard Poodles share the same genes. So, they have the same coat colors and appearance regardless of their size. Their eagerness to please humans dates back to their origins when people used them to retrieve waterfowl. Over the years, breeders have transformed these dogs into a small enough size so that they can serve as companions and best friends to people living in smaller spaces. Black Toy Poodles are also playful and have high energy. So, you can expect lots of laughs when watching them go about their day. Because black Toy Poodles love being around humans, they tend to suffer from separation anxiety. A Toy Poodle waits patiently for his owner. Dogs with hypoallergenic coats have less chance of sparking allergy symptoms in people allergic to dog dander. A black Toy Poodle carried by his owner. Grooming Care Poodles have hair that grows continually, like human hair. Therefore, when weighing whether to bring home a black Toy Poodle, you must ensure you have the time and money to care for their coat. Additionally, brushing your Poodle every one to two days is vital to prevent their hair from matting. Black Toy Poodle puppies have softer and wavier hair. As fun as it is to pet, it also tangles easily. Once your black Toy Poodle gets older, its hair will change from wavy to curlier. Combing a black Poodle. Exercise Requirements Adult black Toy Poodles need 30 to 60 minutes of exercise per day, broken up into at least two different sessions. Nevertheless, they enjoy walks around the neighborhood, playing ball in the yard, and frolicking with other toy-sized dogs in a dog park. Until then, you should aim to give your Poodle puppy exercise in the amount of about five minutes for every one month of age. The owner walk her Toy Poodle. Ease of Training Black Toy Poodles are highly trainable dogs , making them a joy for owners. They can learn as many as words , nearly more than the average dog, which can only learn words. Since Toy Poodles are so intelligent, mixing up your training techniques is helpful. Otherwise, your dog could grow bored and disengage with the training. Toy Poodle gets a reward from his owner. Some of the most common ailments include:. These tiny little pups are loyal and loving and can fit just about anywhere! Also intelligent, the Teacup Poodle will keep you on your toes and carries many of the same characteristics as their standard sized parents. This breed is selectively bred and is a variation of the Toy Poodle. The only difference between the Toy Poodle and the Teacup Poodle is their size, so we can look to the Toy Poodle for a lot of information about the Teacup. Breed Origin The Poodle is one of the most popular dogs in the world and is in fact one of the oldest pure bred dogs. These dogs originated in Germany and were originally bred to be a working and gun dog that made the perfect hunting dog. The Poodle has a waterproof coat and great retrieving talents. Nowadays, this breed is more known as a lapdog rather than a working dog. They are bred in smaller breeds so that more people can enjoy having a Poodle as a best friend. The Teacup variation of this breed has been selectively bred from the Toy Poodle and must be under 9 inches in height and less than 6 pounds in weight to qualify as a Teacup. Teacup puppies are normally born in litters of one to two, although occasionally there can be more. They weigh around 2 pounds when born and will only grow to around 5 pounds once fully grown. They also are always under 9 inches in height. This is because of the selective breeding process and the fact that there are fewer dogs in every litter. Although there are no official breed standards, the general rule of thumb is that a Teacup Poodle is 9 inches in height and they weigh less than 6 pounds, whereas a Toy breed is less than 10 inches. Their breed is very elegant looking, no matter the size, and they always stand poised. Their eyes are also small, dark and are always alert and they have a long muzzle with floppy furry ears. Coat Their coat is curled and thick and they do not shed any fur. This means they are a hypoallergenic dog and are perfect for those with allergies. Unlike other Poodle mix dogs who may have a mixture of different fur colors, this dog only comes in solid colors. This way, you can determine whether you are being sold a purebred Poodle or not. They are extremely loving and make great companions for everyone, including individuals, families and the elderly. Because of their size, too, they fit into many different environments and will do well in apartments and in city living and also in large homes in the country or in open-spaced environments. Their exercise needs are not great, although they do get bored very easily and do not like to be left alone. If they are left alone for too long they will begin to suffer from separation anxiety and exhibit destructive behaviors. Lifespan The life expectancy of a Teacup dog is relatively long. These dogs can be expected to live anywhere between 12 to 14 years. Some of these problems are similar to the issues that may be carried by their standard sized ancestors due to their genetic similarities. These include: Progressive Retinal Atrophy PRA — this is an eye disorder that eventually causes blindness from the loss of photoreceptors at the back of the eye. Dysplasia — this is normally seen in large dogs but can affect different joints in the body. Also, because of their selective breeding and small size, they are also prone to some other health issues. You should always check with the breeder you are buying from to see whether the dogs show any signs of these problems. The three most common are hypoglycemia low blood sugar , heart defects and patella luxation. Patella luxation is a common condition in smaller dogs and is caused when the patella is not properly aligned. This can cause lameness in the leg or an abnormal gait, sort of like a skip or a hop. To ensure you identify the signs of any of these issues early, ensure you take your dog to the vet for regular checkups. Daily Life Fortunately, taking care of a Teacup Poodle in day-to-day life is not too challenging. They do not have as many needs as other sizes of the Poodle breed. Food And Diet Because they are small dogs , their food needs are not huge. Experts recommend that you feed your Teacup Poodle approximately calories per day, which is the equivalent to approximately 1 cup of high quality dry kibble per day. You should try them on a diet that is specially formulated for toy sized breeds, so you are ensuring that they get the right nutrients. You can also reward them with treats when they exhibit good behavior, as well as fruit snacks. Exercise The Teacup Poodle does not have great exercise needs, because of their size. Despite this, they still need to be walked every day. Exercising your dog can be a great way to bond with them and increase mental stimulation, as well as allowing them to experience new sights and sounds. Experts recommend you take your Teacup Poodle for no more than a 30 minute short walk a day. It is best that you split the walk into three so they do not over exert themselves. This way you could take them in the morning, in the middle of the day and in the evening and you could vary the locations to give your dog new experiences. Your dog will also benefit from toys at home that will increase bonding time with you. Keep in mind that a Teacup Poodle has trouble keeping warm because of their small size. If you live in a colder area, your Teacup will benefit from a sweater or jacket to keep warm! Family Compatibility Poodles love humans and make great companions for everyone, including families. Because of their size, Teacup Poodles can fit into any home, whether you live in an apartment in the city of whether you live in a large house in the countryside. They love to be around you, so they are not well suited to a family that is going to be out for most of the day. That being said, they are extremely loving and a great lapdog — and small enough so you might be able to take them with you! The Teacup may feel intimidated when being held by small children and therefore get a little cranky. Fortunately, with early socialization, this can be fixed. Training Teacup Poodles are easy to train, which is another reason many people love these dogs. They are naturally intelligent which makes your life a lot easier, especially if you have never trained a dog before. Teacups want to learn and want to please and they respond well to positive reinforcement. This includes verbal praise and treats. You will also need to socialize them, especially because they are small. They need to be introduced to other people and animals from a young age so they learn how to interact. You should aim to do this twice a week. You should also clip their nails and brush their teeth. To help prevent dental decay and disease, daily brushing is the normally recommended. Teacup Poodles certainly do well in a family environment and love to be around people. They can feel intimidated when they are around small children, so it is not usually advised to house them with young children. However, this can be fixed with socialization. They can live in both small apartments or in big houses, as long as you give them enough love. How much do Teacup Poodles cost? They are expensive because they can be difficult to breed and there is normally only one or two puppies in a litter. If this is too expensive for you, you may find a Teacup Poodle at your local shelter who needs a home. Summary Teacup Poodles are an adorable, friendly and loving dog. Ensure that you give them the right amount of food, exercise them every day and play games with them and they will love you forever! Teacup Poodles love to be around people and can make the perfect family dog. They are not difficult to train and walking is minimal, so they make a great pet to everyone! Clean and check the ears frequently for wax or mites or infection and pull out hairs growing inside the ear canal. The teeth need regular scaling. Since the coat does not shed it needs to be clipped. There are several different types of Poodle clips. The most common for pet owners is an easy-care clip called a "pet clip," "puppy clip" or "lamb clip" where the coat is cut short all over the body. Popular show clips are the English saddle and the Continental clip where the rear half of the body is shaved, bracelets are left around the ankles, and pom-poms are left on the tails and hips. The AKC standard allows for a dog under a year old to be shown in a show style puppy clip which has special requirements such as a pom-pom on the end of the tail. Other clip styles are the modified continental clip, town and country clip, kennel or utility clip, summer clip, and the Miami of bikini clip. Poodles shed little to no hair and are good for allergy sufferers. Origin The Poodle has been known throughout Western Europe for at least years and is depicted in 15th century paintings and in bas-reliefs from the 1st century. France has taken a claim on the origin, but the AKC gives the honor to Germany, where they say it was used as a water retrieval dog. Other claims have been Denmark or the ancient Piedmont. What is certain is that the dog was a descendant of the now-extinct French Water Dog, the Barbet and possibly the Hungarian Water Hound. The name "Poodle" most likely came out of the German word "Pudel," which means "one who plays in water. They would leave hair on the leg joints to protect them from extreme cold and sharp reeds. The hunters in Germany and France used the Poodle as a gundog and as a retriever of waterfowl and to sniff out truffles laying underground in the woods. The French started using the breed as a circus performer because of the dog's high intelligence and trainability. The breed became very popular in France, which led to the common name "French Poodle," but the French people actually called the breed the "Caniche," meaning "duck dog. In the 18th century smaller poodles became popular with royal people. The three official sizes are the Toy, Miniature and Standard Poodle. They are considered one breed and are judged by the same written standard but with different size requirements. Some of the Poodle's talents include: retrieving, agility, watchdog, competitive obedience and performing tricks. Maxidoodle the white Teacup Poodle at 7 years old, weighing 5 pounds 2. Until he was 3, he rode around the house in the pocket of my robe, and now at age 7 and 5lbs he continues to stand on my upturned left hand with his rear in the crook of my arm. I love to kayak the many springs in Florida and Max loves paddling too, riding just behind me on a pad I affix to the top of my kayak, even accompanied me on 4 day river sandbar camping paddle. Max also loves to boss around Tout d'Suite, my 20 black cat, and eat all his cat food. I keep him groomed in the continental cut and he prances like a little prince, on or off the leash. He's very polite and doesn't beg or steal people's food. Max loves to engage me or Tout d'Suite in a lively game of chase. I love my buddy! Penny is 2 years old and weighs 5 pounds 2. She is about 8 inches tall at her shoulder. She is a very happy little dog. Penny is a very healthy girl and enjoys her trips to the vet!! Penny is so good, she always lets me trim her hair and toenails! I think she is a very lucky little dog; she gets lots of love, but also lots of exercise and mental stimulation. Penny is healthy because she is only allowed to eat her dog food , never any people food. I think this has helped to prevent her from being a picky eater, which can be a problem in small dogs! The breed is well proportioned and strong with a sturdy, muscular, slightly elongated body that has a light but solid bone structure. The head should be in proportion to its body and have a little bit of a rounded forehead. The nose is most often black, but blue or liver colors still do sometimes occur. The teeth should meet in a scissors bite. Its eyes are dark and almond-shaped but never protruding. The ears are wide at its base, pointed, upright, and turned forward. However, it is natural for German Shepherd puppies under about six months to have ears that droop slightly. It also has a bushy tail that reaches below the hocks and hangs down when resting. There are three varieties of the German Shepherd: double coat, plush coat, and longhaired coat. It has a double coat made-up of a thick undercoat and dense, slightly wavy or straight outer coat. Most German Shepherd dogs have tan and black or red and black hair, medium in length and tend to shed all year round. There are some other, more rare color variations such as solid black, solid white, liver and blue. The white coat version is recognized as a separate breed by some breed clubs and is called the American White Shepherd. A piebald color has also occurred and is now being called a Panda Shepherd. Discover more about our German Shepherd puppies for sale below! Disposition The German Shepherd is an intelligent and versatile breed. The breed requires an active lifestyle and makes for an ideal companion, protector, and guard dog. Very devoted to its family and home and usually maintains a suspicious demeanor around strangers. German Shepherds can be dominating and assertive towards other dogs, though normally friendly with other pets in the home. Therefore, it is important to begin training your dog beginning as a puppy in order to avoid negative behaviors later. Exercise This breed is very active and athletic. It requires a lot of physical and mental exercise. Without the proper amount of exercise, it can become frustrated and develop negative behaviors. Participating in canine activities such as agility, herding, tracking, and diving is great exercise and fun for the dog. Training Puppy socialization and training are critical, as well as continuing obedience training to ensure the puppy will become a well-mannered adult. The German Shepherd is a highly intelligent companion and extraordinary worker. Use consistent and positive reward-based training for best results. Grooming The German Shepherd sheds regularly and is a heavy seasonal shedder. As a result, it is best to brush them daily. You only need to bathe them when necessary, however, as over bathing can cause skin irritation from removal of oil on their skin. Check their ears and trim their claws regularly. Origin The German Shepherd Dog originated in Karlsruhe, Germany from longhaired, shorthaired, and wire-haired local herding and farm dogs in the mids. Its now famous qualities of intelligence, agility, speed, stealth, and courage were developed not in a police or military academy but in the sheep pastures of s Germany. The breed gained popularity in the United States during the early s due to the canine movie stars Rin-Tin-Tin and Strongheart. Unfortunately, because it is among the German breeds including the Dachshund it suffered a decline in popularity due to anti-German sentiment during and after both world wars. However, due to the rise of modern livestock management and the decline of herding as a dog occupation, von Stephanitz promoted his breed as an ideal K-9 worker and today is therefore the preferred breed for police and military units all over the world. Has a wider head with a more pronounced and better defined stop, a fuller face and a shorter muzzle which further adds to their more solidly built appearance. Has a thicker, more powerful looking neck. Has a very noticeably thicker coat. Has a wider, thicker and generally straighter tail than their American cousins. Has a shorter body. When compared to an English type lab, the American type: Has a lighter, slimmer looking body. The skull and face are noticeably narrower, and their muzzle more streamlined and longer than the English lab. Has a thinner and longer neck which adds to their more lithe and athletic look. Has a noticeably thinner coat. It looks longer and some even have a little curl to them. Has longer legs and so are taller when compared to an English lab. In combination with their slimmer build, this further adds to their look of athleticism. But of course higher energy levels are needed in a dog with such demands placed on them as working all day. The higher energy levels and drive have earnt them the label of being more high-strung as they really are always active and need constant exercise and attention. Without a doubt, the American type is more suited to life as a working dog than as a relaxed family pet. Temperament and personality traits common to both breeds Regardless of type, when it comes to being loving, affectionate and an immense desire to please, both the American and English Labradors are equally matched. True to the breed standard and part of what makes a Lab a Lab, both the American and English types are highly intelligent, keen and biddable. Very kind in nature, bold and confident whilst void of any aggression. But you should be aware that differences in energy, ebullience, being head-strong and controllable do exist between the two types. Labradors bred especially to hunt and compete in field-trials are selectively bred for their working abilities. Higher energy, higher drive, more athletic, slimmer built and agile dogs, these are the most desirable traits in a working Labrador. Labradors bred for show in conformation competitions are selectively bred for their looks and temperament alone, with the Labs most closely matching the breed standard and winning awards in the ring going on to be used in breeding programs. Their ability to perform in hunting and field trials is secondary at best. But the two disciplines have become so specialized and competitive in recent decades that double champions have become rarer and rarer with breeders having to concentrate on just the one area to stand any hope of success. Why You Might Choose An American, Field-Trial Type Labrador Especially bred to have the qualities needed in a successful working dog, the American type is very active, with boundless energy, stamina to match and an adventurous and strong-minded attitude. However, as a family pet and house dog I think they have way too much energy and are too hyper-active than the average family can handle. They need a lot of exercise, constantly need to have their minds occupied and hence will take up a lot of your time. Perhaps then an English Lab would be more suitable… Why You Might Choose An English, Show Type Labrador Especially bred for looks and temperament to match as closely as possible to the official breed standard, the English type Lab is perfect if you have any intentions to compete in conformation shows or wish to go into breeding. They tend to calm down after puppy-hood much sooner and are more eager to please and easier to train as a well-behaved companion. An English Lab is far more suited to life as a family pet. The split of Labradors between the English and American types, or the field trial and show types, is very ingrained and accepted terminology within the Labrador world in general even if not with the official parent clubs and kennel clubs of the world. But the differences that exist between American and English Labs is undeniable and becoming more prevalent as the breeding lines of those for show and those for working Labs become ever more separated. Some breeders, particularly those from the American field-trial genre feel that the show ring no longer gives their dogs the recognition they deserve. So which type is best for you? This depends on your lifestyle and what you want from your dog. American type Labradors are generally more athletic, energetic, more highly driven and better suited to an outdoor life of hunting and sports, or for families with a great deal of energy and real outdoor types. English type Labradors are blockier and bigger built, calmer, more docile and better suited for life as a family pet…but still an active family nonetheless. To choose between the types, do a little research, be honest with yourself about which would best fit into your pace of life and try to meet a few of each type to see which you prefer.
