Preventive healthcare — budget for routine vet visits to help stop your dog getting ill and catch any problems early. They need annual check-ups, vaccinations and regular flea and worming treatments. Accessories — including lots of poo bags, replacing worn toys and grooming accessories, buying doggy toothpaste and any other extras they might need. Breeders If you buy from a breeder, make sure your puppy will be well socialised and have all necessary screening tests, health checks and vaccinations. We recommend looking for a Kennel Club Assured breeder as they meet higher standards. When can I start to walk my puppy? Young puppies are prone to disease if they are walked before they are fully vaccinated. Puppies do pick up some immunity from their mum if the mum was vaccinated which helps to keep them safe when they are very young. It is recommended that you do not look to walk you puppy until they are 16 weeks of age. Puppies are still growing and the more they walk the more pressure they are putting on their bones and joints. Studies have shown that over-exercising a German Shepherd puppy may result in damage to their developing joints and cause early arthritis in your puppy. This does not mean you should be locking your puppy up in a cage for the first year of their life, far from it, exercise and socialization is great for your GDP See what I did there. A slow walk out and about around the neighborhood will do wonders for your puppy in helping them to grow and socialize. This means that for an 8 week old puppy the recommendation is a total of 20 minutes per day. The Take 5 rule has become the go-to suggestion when recommendations are given for how far a puppy should walk. The following section is purely our opinion based on our own puppies. Please ensure you consult your vet for official recommendations. Before 16 weeks we would absolutely recommend sticking to the rule. We interpret the rule to be aimed at making people aware of the potential issues overexertion on their pup may cause in the long run. You know your puppy better than anybody so are in the best position to judge what they can handle and when they are beginning to tire. When can we start the more vigorous stuff? Again, each German Shepherd is different and as their owner you will have to use your judgement on this. Typically, a puppy will be strong enough to go on a faster paced, minute walk when they are 6months or older. Forcing your puppy to continue walking when they are already tired is a sure-fire way to book a ticket to the vets! If you would like to go running with your puppy start easing them in very slowly around 6 months of age and gradually introduce running to your puppy. Over time you will then be able to slowly increase the amount of running you and your puppy can do together. Other signs that you are progressing too quickly can be your puppy refusing to walk further while you are out or a reluctance to go out with you again. Origins of the Malshipoo The Maltese Shih Tzu Poodle hybrid, otherwise known as a Malshipoo, is a combination of three of the most loved dog breeds. This hybrid breed, which originated in the United States of America, is relatively new to the scene but has quickly become a very popular designer dog. This is a multi-generational breed meaning there are a few ways that this particular hybrid can be bred. It is also possible to have a puppy from a Malshipoo and any other parent breeds. These dogs are a small breed that can be quite different from each other in appearance depending on the combination of breeds that their parents are. Some pups may inherit the Poodle coat, some the Maltese and others the Shih Tzu coat. Most puppies, though, tend to fall somewhere in the middle of the Maltese Shih Tzu spectrum. With three different breeds in the mix, there is almost no limit to the colors of the coat of your Shih Poo Maltese mix. There is a wide range of shades thanks to the Poodle and Shih Tzu genes. In general, you can expect your pup to grow up to be around 10 inches on average and weigh around 10 pounds. The only certainty with their appearance is that a full-grown Maltese Shih Tzu Poodle will fall into the toy breed category of dogs. Curious about Shih Tzu mixes? But, because they are so small, they are prone to obesity, so make sure to not overfeed your little friend. In general, high-quality dog food that is specific to small breeds is a good idea. If possible, a food that has supplements of glucosamine and chondroitin is ideal to aid joint support, as these doggos are susceptible to hip dysplasia. A first-generation Malshipoo will be a highly focused and intelligent dog. However, unlike the Shih Tzu, this pup is a star when it comes to training. So, if you are looking for a dog that will be by your side or curled up on your lap and keeps you company, then the Maltese Shih Tzu cross Poodle is the dog for you. The Malshipoo has Some Health Concerns As with all dog breeds, there are a few health concerns to keep an eye out for regarding your Malshipoo. Some minor conditions include; patellar luxation, hypothyroidism and hypoglycemia. More severe conditions that can make themselves known include; bloat, hip dysplasia and epilepsy. Generally, minor conditions are easily treatable and manageable, with the more serious ones requiring more intensive treatments. They are adaptable to most situations as long as their owner is with them. They are, however, not suited to large homes or farms because of their small size. If introduced to it from a young age, they will happily travel with you almost anywhere. Although adaptable, they are still house pets and will need your protection when you take them away from the safety of your apartment. The Shih Poo Maltese Mix Is Easy to Groom As we mentioned previously, your pup could have a range of different types of coats depending on which parent breed they take after. Their coats should be shaved at least three times a year, and you will need to use a quality brush a few times a week to keep their coat tangle and debris free. Make sure to clean their tear stains on a regular basis, as they are prone to these because of their Shih Tzu and Maltese parents. These are the most common grooming considerations, just like one of their parent breeds, the Shih Tzu. Apart from those, the standard basics of keeping their nails trimmed and getting their ears cleaned are what is needed from time to time. Male vs Female Malshipoos There is very little to no difference physically between the male and female Shih Tzu Poodle Maltese mix puppies. However, when it comes to their temperament, there are a few notable differences. Female pups do tend to be more intelligent with a more independent nature. Female Malshipoos are also more protective in general and are less affectionate when compared to males. The male pups are far more playful and will actively seek more attention from their owners and give it more freely. Our placement process is very fluid and availability can change quickly. After you submit your application, you will hear back within 72 hours from a member of our adoption team. It may be important to note that rescue dogs are NOT a low-cost alternative to purchasing a dog from a breeder. To begin with, we seldom have puppies and rarely have dogs younger than 2 years of age. Additionally, females are not common. If you are very particular in regard to the size, age, color, gender or future task of your dog, it would be best to contact a reputable breeder for a suitable puppy. Dogs are always placed in the home that most closely can match their needs rather than the order received of the application and the potential adopter must come to meet the dog in their foster space. We do not "deliver" or do long distance transport due to shortage of volunteers. .Adoption Donations Suggested adoption donations vary with each dog. They are on a sliding scale, based on the age of the dog. The higher suggested donations for a younger dog help to offset our much higher veterinary costs associated with our older rescue dogs. Our rescue efforts are entirely funded by our adoption donations and we receive no outside monetary assistance. We do not offer "free" dogs.
