They are often described as a happy teddy bear, but there is a lot more to this silly dog than just his looks. While they tend to be stubborn during their adolescence, the breed is very intelligent and can do very well in a number of dog sports, including agility, obedience, and therapy work. Since that time, continued efforts have seen more consistent breeding and owners can choose from a number of different generations including: F1 Generation — Result of a mating between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. F2 Generation — Result of a mating between two F1 Bernedoodles. The reason for the generations is to move toward a breed standard and breed acceptance in kennel clubs. In general, what you are looking for is a fluffy, teddy bear of a dog; however, the overall build and appearance will range depending on the generation of the breed and if the breeder is breeding more for a Poodle look or more for a Bernese look. In general, Bernedoodles are a square dog that should be the same height as they are long. They should have a thick, long, and straight muzzle and the skull should be rounded in shape. The ears should hang and be large and wide. The overall look should be of an athletic dog with a straight topline. If they are taking after their Poodle parent, Bernese Mountain Dog Poodles will have a thin build but will be a lot thicker with a wide chest if they are taking after the Bernese Mountain Dog parent. Bernedoodle Size Bernedoodle size really depends on what type of Poodle was used in the mix and the breed can actually be found in three sizes ranging from small to large. These are: Toy Bernedoodle — This is a result of a toy poodle and Bernese Mountain Dog breeding and toy Bernedoodles should range in height from 12 to 17 inches and in weight from 10 to 24 pounds. Miniature Bernedoodle — The result of breeding a Miniature Poodle with a Bernese Mountain Dog, the miniature Bernedoodle is between 18 to 22 inches in height and 25 to 49 pounds in weight. Standard Bernedoodle — The result of breeding a standard Poodle with a Bernese Mountain Dog, the standard Bernedoodle should stand between 23 to 29 inches tall and should weigh between 70 to 90 pounds. It is important to note that the Bernese Mountain Dog Poodle is not hypoallergenic unless it has the Poodle coat, and, even then, it is not always hypoallergenic. Generally, the Bernedoodle has a coat that is long and wavy with an unkempt look to them that makes them look like disheveled teddy bears. The coat should consist of two coats, a dense, short undercoat, and a longer topcoat. Bernese Mountain Dog Poodles are primarily found in only three colors; however, there is a wide variation to markings. Bernedoodle Grooming As with many mixed breeds, grooming can differ depending on the coat type inherited from the parents. Curly coats require brushing daily unless you decide on clipping the coat short, then it is done every few weeks, roughly every six to eight weeks. For the wavy coated Bernedoodle, the coat should be brushed once or twice a week. They are a low shedding breed but they do have periods of heavy shedding where they blow their coat. During this time, the breed requires brushing two or three times a week. With bathing, the Bernedoodle should only be bathed when it is necessary to prevent drying out the coat. Some dogs show pain and lameness on one or both rear legs, but you may not notice any signs of discomfort in a dog with hip dysplasia. As the dog ages, arthritis can develop. Hip dysplasia is hereditary, but it can be worsened by environmental factors, such as rapid growth from a high-calorie diet or injuries incurred from jumping or falling on slick floors. Elbow Dysplasia is a heritable condition common to large-breed dogs. This can lead to painful lameness. Your vet may recommend surgery to correct the problem, or medication and weight loss to control the pain. Cataracts are an opacity on the lens of the eye that causes difficulty in seeing. The eye s of the dog will have a cloudy appearance. Diabetes mellitus is a disorder in which the body cannot regulate blood sugar levels. Blood sugar levels are regulated in part by insulin, which is produced in the pancreas. Glucose sugar is needed by the cells of the body to burn for energy; insulin is the key that lets the glucose into the cell. Without insulin, the glucose cannot enter the cell, so the cells are hungry even though there are high levels of glucose circulating in the blood. A diabetic dog will eat more food to try to compensate, but he will lose weight because food is not being used efficiently. Signs of diabetes are excessive urination and thirst, increased appetite, and weight loss. Diabetes can be controlled by diet and daily insulin injections. Thankfully, Goldadors are eager to please and highly motivated by reward, which makes them extremely loyal and easy to train. These dogs also have a great work ethic, and they enjoy having something to do. This means they make great working dogs, and they have the attention span to take on challenges such as disability support. They find this mentally stimulating and emotionally rewarding. Energy Level Goldadors have lots of energy that needs to be burned off on a daily basis. They need a minimum of at least 30 minutes of solid exercise a day, but they will really thrive if given at least an hour or more of exercise per day. They are better adapted to spaces with at least a small garden to apartment living. They will particularly love joining their families on hikes and other adventures. They also love to swim, so swimming should make up a regular part of their activity. Independence Goldadors love being around their people. These are not the types of dogs you can leave at home for extended periods of time. While they might be able to settle down and do nothing for a few hours when you are around, if they are left alone, they can become anxious. This prolonged anxiety can result in lots of nervous, and often destructive, energy. Goldador Health Risks If you adopt a Goldador, you can expect them to live for roughly 10 to 15 years, which is a respectable amount of time for a large-sized dog. They can be prone to inherited health conditions, but whether or not your Goldador will suffer from any of these ailments as they grow is pretty much the luck of the draw. You can get some indication of their likelihood of developing these conditions if you look at the medical records of their parents. One of the most common health problems affecting Goldadors is hip and elbow dysplasia. This is a malformation of the bones that occurs as they grow, as their bones grow at different rates and end up being the wrong size for one another. The best way to prevent this is with a healthy diet and lots of exercise when they are young to prevent the problem from developing. Jayjay has done wonderful, he is not a bit over 4 months and is doing well on potty training, is learning to socialize with both large and small dogs in a polite manner and is learning to respect cats as well. I have had the pleasure of having him in my home for 1 week visits twice and am thrilled with how great he makes me look! He goes home each time with new tricks to show his family. He sits, downs, walks on his leash, potties in the designated area of my yard and his owners is learning rollover, high five and fetch. He also waits in a sit when you open his kennel door until you attach his leash and when it is time to go back in his kennel he enters on command and sits to wait while you remove his leash and close his door. Jayjay has gone to the groomers and they were shocked that he allowed clipping a full puppy clip for his first time without prior clipper experience. I also clipped Jayjay at my home to help protect him from all the stickers on our farm and he was a good boy. He has also been great on the farm and loves kissing horse muzzles. He sits with the two boys who love him in the car and loves to go on car rides. He is learning how to play with young children as his two boys are almost 2 and 5, nothing tougher than trying to train toddlers and a puppy at the same time but with his intelligence and eagerness to learn with positive reinforcement Jayjay is doing great. Phoebe is an incredibly loving poodle. Even as a pup, she was curious and alert. She adapted immediately to her new environment when she was old enough for us to bring her home. Phoebe is without a doubt a show-stopper. When we are out walking with her, people stop their cars to tell us how beautiful she is. She, in my opinion, could easily outshine the dogs at Westminster. None are particularly recent and the two head shots were taken not long after we got her. But she was beautiful then and is beautiful now. She's a head-turner, even if most people have never seen a red Standard Poodle and so think she's some kind of "doodle. In fact, I had her at the beach today and she was actually leaping over waves positively lab-like trying and reach me. What can we say about Maggie that we haven't already told you. She's a fabulous, gentle, incredibly lovable, intelligent and sometimes amusingly or, depending on the situation, frustratingly sorry, but we have to be honest stubborn puppy, with oodles of love and not a nasty bone in her body. She has an exceptionally soft mouth and we've actually never once heard her growl, and so we have absolutely no hesitation in letting her play with small children, other dogs and our cats not chickens, though - she seems to think they are chew toys, a habit we need to break her of. She's very playful and athletic - loves to play tug of war, keep-away, fetch and rough-house with her best friend, Motor the cat - but, at the same time, her essential disposition is exceedingly even and placid and she's quite independent almost cat-like in some respects - not at all hyper or clingy or in need of constant attention. Unquestionably, her outstanding temperament is in large part testament to the love and socialization she received early on from you. She's also been very healthy, experiencing no illnesses of any kind. Indeed, a couple of months ago she was playing near some barbed wire and became hooked and tore up her left foreleg pretty badly at the elbow. The doctor at the emergency hospital we took her to failed to properly clean out the wound before suturing it and a month later she required surgery to remove large chunks of gravel and road base from her joint and the surrounding tissue. When the surgeon saw the amount and size of the debris that needed to be removed, he marveled at her constitution and the fact that she showed absolutely no sign of infection and what could have been a very serious situation seems to have been entirely averted.
