For example your dog may be chasing a small animal into a road, or toward the edge of a large drop. If you could call them, have them stop and turn to you it could potentially save their life! You need to train them so the sound of their name causes them to automatically and reactively stop and pay you attention. So how exactly is this done? As a recall command You should never do this! As a way to get their attention This should be the only use! Only using to get their attention is correct and if you use their name the other 2 ways it loses its power and meaning. And then when you catch your dog, you grab your slipper and tell them off. What does your dog learn here? Their name has a negative meaning attached to it. So if you want your dog to stop and give you their attention when you call their name, do not use it angrily and as a telling off. They will shout: Rover! Come here boy. Then when they finally come they get told off and scolded. So they learn to ignore it because it means bad things. Dogs, although clever, need routine and clarity so if you use their name to mean up to three different things they will only get confused. And if you use their name negatively they will start to ignore it as dogs are reward seekers and do what leads to good consequences. Getting told off is not one of them. So do not use it as a correction or as a recall command, only ever use it to get their attention. You should also only use their name in a positive way, praise and reward them massively when they give you their attention, and never use their name for anything else. Getting their attention and issuing a command are separate things. Their name is a command that means to listen to you. Come, and drop etc. At first, to get the praise and reward is why your puppy will turn to you when you call their name. As soon as they look at you, mark the behavior and give them more praise and a treat. When they look at you, mark the behavior, praise and treat. Repeat this a good 8 to 12 times over 1 or 2 minutes. And repeat this whole exercise every 2 hours or so for 2 or 3 days. And they will give you their attention every time! Then the back yard. Then the front yard. You want to vary the places you do it so your puppy is curious about other things in the environment making it harder to get their attention. But you want nothing so distracting as another animal or child just yet as this may be just too distracting and they will ignore their name. When they are consistently giving 2 seconds attention, move to 3 seconds, then 4 and then 5. If you get to 4 seconds and they start to fail, drop back to 3 or even 2 seconds again and then slowly increase. You may have gone too far too fast. And remember, only do this for 1 or 2 minutes at the most or they will tire and become bored and the training will lose its effectiveness. Step 5 When your puppy can give you 5 seconds attention all around the home and back yard, you can now start to add distractions such as another person, noise from the TV or another dog in the room. Now when your puppy is distracted, call them to get their attention and mark, praise and treat when they do. As the difficulty has increased, try to just get their attention and instantly reward them for a few sessions before then increasing the time to 2, 3…5 seconds of attention. If they do not give you their attention, clap or snap your fingers, if they still ignore you, gently rein them in toward you and call their name again and mark, praise and reward the instant they look to you. If your puppy struggles to look to you with distractions in the room, you can up the value of the food reward to something like liver or bacon, something irresistible so your puppy is keener to get their reward. But equally you will not have a reward to give them every time so you must start to phase it out! So go through the exercise lots over the course of a few days and start to phase out the treats a little. And then start to increase the time they must give attention, and then start to phase out the reward a bit but of course still give massive praise. After building up to successes in many different environments with lots of different distractions, you should now be able to get your puppies attention reliably every time. Ongoing Maintenance You need to practice the exercises regularly in all environments with all sorts of distractions. It is a gradual process for him to grasp this. It may take a few weeks to master potty training, not days! Keep your puppy in the crate when unsupervised. It only sends a message that he can get his way. Instead, reward good behavior in the crate, i. Training your Golden Retriever puppy soft bite must be done in puppyhood as an adolescent dog will not be able to adjust the force of his jaws when he has adult teeth and jaw muscles. The response of the other puppies on the Umbrella Stability Test ranged from slowly moving away from the umbrella to cowering and running away from the umbrella. We contacted Tender Loving Canine Assistance Dogs and set up a meeting to have Buster tested, and he passed with flying colors. They fell in love with Buster on the spot and adopted him into their POOCH program where he is being trained at a prison to be a service dog. We kept our Lil Bear to train as a service dog. From the beginning, we knew he was a little softy, but he passed the retrieval test with flying colors so we had high hopes for him. We started taking him on outings to the book store, grocery stores, and shopping malls. He never showed the confidence we hoped and while he would eventually adapt to places after several visits he was always hesitant in new situations. He continued to progress and we were hopeful his confidence would grow as we exposed him to new environments and worked on his training. Harness : We recently purchased this harness , and we LOVE this one and would recommend this to anyone with a pup as this harness is a little trickier to wiggle out of. Clifton has a medium he weighs about 30 pounds. Collar : We have a bunch of different collars that we switch between, but I love this cognac leather collar for every day. We have this one , and as soon as we switched to this, Clifton walked so much better and stopped pulling. Some of my current favorites are this modern set which is great because it includes a stand. Did You Feed the Dog? I love the smell of it. John Paul Pet Lavender Mint Detangling Spray : Doodles get matted super easily, so we add this detangling spray into our grooming routine to help with the matting. Andis Pet Steel Comb : If you can keep your furbaby mat-free this comb is great for combing him or her out. Safari Dematting Comb : You are going to need a de-matting comb to helpwith matting especially as your puppy gets older. It is the best thing we have bought, and we use it all the time. Start doing this when they are little. We love this little set that includes the toothpaste, brush and finger brush. Towel : We keep two of these pet towels in the bathroom where we give Clifton a bath. They are great at absorbing the water after a bath. We also pack these when we take him to the dog beach or Florida. Mushers Secret Paw Wax : If your pup lives in a cold climate, this is perfect for their dry, cracked paws that will come in winter. Shopping for toys was one of my favorite parts when I first started shopping for Clifton. My advice is not to buy too many toys at first like I did. Your puppy is going to destroy those cute, stuffed animals quickly. Grab a few because they make for some cute photos and toys around the house, but also stock up on things that will help when they need to chew. One thing to keep in mind when getting toys is to avoid any rope toys. Pups can eat the strings and have them wrap around their intestines — which is NOT good. So just skip them altogether. It is supposed to help transition them because it has a battery heartbeat and a pouch to make it warm. If you can, ask the breeder to rub it on his mom or the other puppies so it smells like them. This will be a place for them to sleep and relax. Make sure that this bed is big enough for your Goldendoodle to sleep on. As a puppy, your Goldendoodle may chew on their bed and blankets. Make sure to get a bed that is made of out tough material but is soft enough for them to want to sleep on. As your Goldendoodle gets older , you may want to transition them to an orthopedic dog bed. These beds would not be a bad choice for a puppy either. Most dogs love the plush sides to rest their head. This bed is waterproof, which is great for those puppies learning to potty train. This bed is very comfy and is made of memory foam, which is a plus for older Goldendoodles. Check Price Food and Water Bowls As soon as you get your Goldendoodle home, they will need to have food and water available. There are many different size and shape food bowls that you can get for your Goldendoodle puppy. There are even pet water fountains to keep your Goldendoodle entertained while drinking water. This is a very personal preference. When looking for a food and water bowl, also look at your new puppies eating style. Many people will let their Goldendoodle eat out of Tupperware for a few days until they know if they have a dog that is constantly moving the bowl around the house or one that eats very fast. If your dog is moving the bowl around the house, consider a bowl with a rubber bottom to help it stay in place more. Stainless steel bowls are great for cleaning but may be strange for your puppy to eat out of. If your pup is eating their food very fast, consider a puzzle bowl. This bowl is designed for them to have to eat around different parts until they finish their meal. If your dog eats very fast, they are prone to vomiting shortly after eating or even Bloat. Your Puppy's New Home 1. Foldable Wire Crate I recommend a wire-sided crate with a removable tray and adjustable divider. This encourages pottying outside. This pen should be helpful for the first several months. Puppy Toys Each of these items are in my personal inventory for puppy families to purchase when they pick up their puppy! My top recommendation is the Snuggle Puppy. KONG puppy toys are also available in my inventory for purchase. You can choose to purchase for in-person pick up in your puppy pack, or order to be shipped to you. This can cause crying at night and anxiety being alone for the first weeks home. A snuggle puppy is a soft toy with a heart beat simulator and heating pack. These features make it feel like your puppy is cuddling with another dog. It makes a huge difference for your puppy! I encourage every family to order one for your puppy pack so I can send it home with you on adoption day. Play fetch, or stuff with treats or canned food to keep your puppy content for crate time. It is soft rubber, and squeaks when your dog catches or chews. Medium is the size of an average tennis ball. Food should be offered twice per day: morning and night. Food should be restricted before a long period of crate time and at least an hour before bed, to prevent unnecessary accidents. You may prefer to use a smaller crate can be used while your puppy is little rather than using the divider. Dog Treats Treats should be soft, small, and easy to chew quickly. Metal Comb or Grooming Rake A metal comb is a great tool for curly coated Goldendoodles and a grooming rake works well for wavy coated Goldendoodles. Slicker Brush A slicker brush is handy for fluffing the outer coat on your goldendoodle. Styptic powder is located next to the nail clippers in the pet store. Doggie Toothbrush You may find that the finger toothbrush is easiest to use when your goldendoodle is a puppy. Toys When your goldendoodle puppy is young, she will enjoy soft toys , but keep in mind that her sharp teeth will eventually allow her to chew through stuffed toys quickly. As she gets older, Jolly Balls, chew ropes, etc. Food dispensing toys are a fun way to encourage your puppy to channel her energy into something productive.
